Implications
of the Long
Term Plan
and Unitary
Plan for
Community
Sport in
Auckland
Aktive continues to be
a key contributor to
advocacy projects with
huge implications for
the sector.
After eight months understanding,
submitting and campaigning on
the Auckland Council Long Term
Plan (10 year budget) to ensure an
$800m capital expenditure line for
future sports parks and facilities
is retained, the final vote in
Council took place on June 25th.
The approval means the sector,
particularly codes with good
facility plans in cooperation with
Council, can implement capacity
improvements to meet current and
future demand.
Similarly, intensive advocacy
work (with Sport New Zealand
and Regional Sport Organisationmember
group Auckland Sports
Coalition) on the Auckland Unitary
Plan has already brought good
news for sport and recreation in
Auckland. Proposed planning
controls have been amended
in submission and mediation
stages, with new rules being less
restrictive around lighting and
hours of operation for sports
clubs and facilities. Noise controls
remain to be finalised and the hard
work is not quite over – August 3rd
saw the main hearings process
take place, with Council feedback
expected shortly.
Aktive has been building stronger
links with national sports bodies
over the past year, and formalising
an ongoing linkage will be
achieved through the launch of
the National Sport Organisation
Advisory Group later this
year. With a cross-section of CEOs
available to link to Aktive’s Board
and senior team, work with and
support of key sports in Auckland
will be most effectively directed to
meet our shared objectives.
