Community Theater Presents
Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, June 23-25

In keeping with Ashland
Community Theater’s (ACT)
mission of providing as many
opportunities as possible to local
talent, the troupe will present
Neil Simon’s three-act comedy,
Plaza Suite, in June using three
different directors.
“We have three directors
directing the three acts,” Joe
White, ACTs founder, said.
“Different directors gives more
opportunities for more people
to be involved.”
The directors are Chris Erath
(Act 1), Julie Murphy (Act 2) and
Karen Dinehart (Act 3).
“With Neil Simon’s Plaza
Suite, we are departing from our
usual format where we write
our own material, though the
play falls into our model: three
different acts based on the same
theme. Based on feedback from
our audiences, they were interested
in seeing how our actors
would do with familiar material,”
White said.
The play is set in Suite 719
of New York City’s Plaza Hotel.
Simon originally had four acts,
but one was cut during pre-production.
The playwright later
expanded it for the 1970 feature
film, The Out-of-Towners.
“Our [ACT] tickets are affordable.
You can come out to
see a really good performance
in an intimate theater. The
Ashland Middle School seats
175 people. I prefer a small,
intimate theater. I want to see
the audience reaction,” White
explained. “We are sustainable;
we have Ashland businesses supporting
us and we get grants, so
we can keep our ticket prices
low.”
White encourages patrons
to pay it forward. “If you can’t
make it [to the June show]
please consider logging in and
buying some tickets to help support
some of the seniors and less
privileged who cannot afford
coming to the show. Just click

Interested in expanding theater
in Ashland, White said,
“We started in 2014 with under
a dozen volunteers. Now we
have 30+ but want more for
many more capacities.”
ACT is already working on its
fall show, using the same model
with short scenes.
