Norwood Police Department
Celebrates 120 Years
by Renee Plant
It was more than a century
ago that Chief Warren Rhoades
and his lone night patrolman,
Michael Creed, worked together
to police the streets of Norwood
upon the department’s formation
in May of 1896. Now, with
more than 50 sworn officers
on the department headed by
Chief William G. Brooks III, the
Norwood Police Department
continues to expand to keep up
with a growing population and
increased call volume.
“We cannot [provide] the call
Norwood's Public Safety Building on Nahatan Street
volume from the early years, as
records are unavailable,” Chief
Brooks said. “But I can certainly
[say] it was lower, and life may
have been simpler on the department
in the early years.”
Prior to the formation of the
department, the town relied on
an informal constable system.
Department historian Brian P.
Murphy, who is retired from
his position as a senior lieutenant
and executive officer on the
force, said he believes constables
were elected by town selectmen.
“The growth of the temperance
movement, which resulted
in nationwide prohibition in the
1920s, I think had a direct correlation
to the Town Fathers
seeing the need for Norwood to
have a formally organized police
department,” Murphy said.
“The officers would not only respond
to complaints, but would
[also] patrol. The editor of the
local paper at the time would
regularly report and complain
of illegal liquor sales by several
establishments, and also complain
of the ill effects of unruly
behavior of drunkards.”
In 1879, the lockup on Market
Street was built and later
equipped with modern steel cells
in 1903. The building was used
to house prisoners until 1964.
According to Murphy, it is now
used as storage.
“One can still see the bars
from the outside,” he said.
There have been multiple
location changes over the years,
with the first “station” being a
"I visit many markets and
rear room in a house used for town
offices before moving to a space in
the temporary Town Hall, which
was located at the current Town
Hall parking lot. From there, the
department moved to the second
floor of the 1907 firehouse, now
the home of Olde Colonial Cafe.
In 1928, the station found a more
permanent home.
“The department was located
at the bottom floor of the town
hall from 1928 to 1964, Murphy
said. "In 1964, the town opened a
brand new combined police and
fire station on Nahatan Street.
It was built on land seized by the
town for unpaid taxes. Dunn's
Pond was on the property and
there were constant flooding
problems over the years. In 1998,
a 'hundred year' storm flooded the
bottom floor to a point of four and
a half feet. In 2001, the building
was demolished and a new facility
was erected on the same property
but a little to the east and south
of the previous building. Plus it
was built on a slab (no basement).
That building was occupied in
July, of 2003.
It’s not only the location of
the department that has changed,
but also the call volume, as well as
the nature of calls. According to
Officer Kevin Grasso, many call
records were destroyed in floods
prior to the department moving to
the new public safety building, but
he did note there has been a continuous
increase over recent years.
“In 2014, we had 17,450 calls
for service, and in 2015 we had
17,936 calls,” Grasso said. “I do
have access to calls for service back
to early 2000s. [In] 2001, [there
were] 15,164 calls for service,
and in 2006, [there were] 16,230
calls.”
The increase in call volume
mirrors an increase in population.
Records indicate the population
of Norwood in the late 1800s was
around 5,000, whereas today the
town holds more than 30,000 residents.
According to Murphy, the
department has responded to the
changes accordingly.
“Generally, policing responds
to the changes demanded by the
public,” Murphy said. “Whether
it is [drunken] driving, domestic
abuse, drug abuse, fraud [or]
computer crimes, we often are at
the forefront of the effort. We are
still the only 24-hour resource for
people in need who don't know
who else to call.”
NORWOOD
Beautifully Serving the Community for 20 Years
By Donna Lane
2016 marks the 20 year anniversary
of the Norwood Evening
Garden Club and during those
two decades, those members have
been busy beautifying Norwood.
The club has sponsored many
educational programs and made
them accessible to the community.
They have also put on a flower
show, a garden tour, a town-wide
earth day celebration, and 12 Art
in Bloom exhibitions. They plant
and maintain a vegetable garden
at Adams Farm in Walpole, and
donate the produce to the Norwood
and Walpole food pantries.
They design and maintain the
plantings around the F. Holland
Day House and have donated and
installed a number of plants at the
George H. Morse House. With all
that they have done and continue
to do, their most visible contribution
to the Town of Norwood is
the adoption, planting and maintenance
of several spots in town as
part of their civic beautification
efforts.
In 1998, the group adopted
the two islands at Guild Square.
Then club-president Lynn Riley,
who was also a member of the
Norwood Flower Committee,
accepted the challenge of Town
Manager, John Carroll, on behalf
of the fledgling club. The new,
embedded cement planters presented
a significant design challenge
for yours truly. The area
required fairly shallow-rooted
plants that could take the abuse of
salting roads in wintertime. The
plants also needed to be easy-care
for the long term, and remain at
a reasonable height so as not to
the plantings have stood the test
of time, with only a couple of casualties
in the smaller bed, and a
severe but judicious pruning of the
specimen Japanese maple.
Again at the request of Carroll,
the Club adopted “The Round” in
the center of town (at the intersection
of Vernon and Washington
Streets) shortly after completion
of Guild Square. It was even
more challenging! Not only is the
embedded round sidewalk planter
only 12 inches deep, half of it is
located in the sun, while the other
half sits in the shade. After a few
tentative plantings, the Club decided
to make this a combination
planting of annuals and perennials
each year.
In 2005, Carroll again turned
to the club to “do something” with
the corner of Washington and
Cottage Streets in the town square.
(Are you sensing a pattern here?)
After pulling up acres of catbrier, a
thorny vine of ill-repute, the sunny
corners were finally clean enough
to plant. As I write this, the fothergilla
planted on that day is bursting
with blooms, enhancing that
area beyond what was originally
imagined.
Have you noticed Hawes Pool
Park lately? In 1999 it was a 234
foot x 5 foot strip of sod that
sported lots of debris, a bevy of
weeds, spotty drifts of daffodils
and a few struggling PJM rhododendrons.
Set off from the Town
pool by an unattractive chain-link
fence, the long, narrow property is
one of the most visible in South
Norwood. Despite the Town’s regular
cleanups, this area was more
often than not an eyesore, with
trash strewn by passers-by.
Judith Howard, a member
of the South Norwood Business
Committee, asked if we would
adopt this area. There were several
hurdles the Club needed to
overcome before adopting the
project: they had no money, there
was no water at the site, and they
needed Town approval since it is
Town-owned land. The Club applied
for a grant from the Andrew
Boch Betterment Fund in 1999.
An award was not forthcoming,
but they were urged to re-submit
their request the following year.
In 2001, the Club was awarded
$2000 for the project and set to
work.
The objective was to have a
self-sustaining garden that would
mitigate the extremely long expanse
and the unsightly chainlink
fence; make the planting look
as though it flowed into the park
and was integral to it; and provide
diverse color and texture of plantings
so the area was interesting
and colorful at least three seasons
of the year.
The Norwood Evening Garden
Club would be the stewards
of this piece of property for the
Town. The Town, in turn, would
provide the Club with a means
to water, the manual labor which
was beyond the Club members’
A master plan was developed
calling for implementation over a
four-year period, working with the
Norwood Public Works Department.
The project was started in
2001 and completed in 2005. In
2006, the Club won a Civic Development
Award from the Garden
Club Federation of Massachusetts
for their work on this project.
In 2002, the Club was forced
to remove and replace plants that
were damaged by a sidewalk plow
and an unusually high use of salt
by road crews. And two years after
completion, more plants had to
be replaced because a car ran off
the road, plowing down a newly
planted tree and several shrubs. In
2015, everyone held their collective
breath as talks of an ice rink
continued, suggesting the very
real possibility that the garden
would have to be moved.
The garden will remain where
it is. But, after 15 years some of
the original plants have outgrown
their space, so the Club is now reassessing
the plantings and making
plans to replace the underachieving
specimens.
Each year, members of the
garden club roll up their sleeves
to weed, prune, dig and plant at
all of these sites, as well as at the
entrance to Bird Park. The
Club calls this civic beautification
project “The Washington Street
Corridor.” The Club is proud of
the work it has accomplished and
acknowledges that it could not do
all that it does without the support
of the Town. Together they
are trusted partners in helping to
make Norwood the beautiful town
that it is.
People enjoy walking or running for a number of
reasons. For many, it's a simple form of exercise. For
some, it's about 'the freedom of the road' and 'being
one with nature', while others find it an effective way
to decrease stress.
Walking or running helps condition the body and
improves blood circulation. Regular walking is associated
with a healthier heart and a greater sense of
wellbeing. For those who like to run, the right running
technique combined with appropriate footwear helps
minimize injuries.
The Mechanics of Motion
With the proper walking and running technique,
you can avoid injury and improve endurance. Here
are a few things to consider:
1. The right degree of flexion in your knees and
elbows is important to reduce strain on your
joints.
2. Posture is important. In fact, your entire technique
is dependent upon your posture for efficiency
and safety.
3. An appropriate range of motion helps minimize
injuries and improve running technique.
4. Proper stride length is an important aspect of
efficiency and injury prevention.
5. Proper rhythm will help minimize injury by
eliminating unnecessary overuse of your muscles.
6. Coordination between upper and lower body is
an important aspect of running technique.
Each of these components plays a vital role in running
technique. As you progress with each component,
expect an improvement in strength, efficiency,
distance and possibly speed.
Injury Prevention with Physical Therapy
A physical therapist can identify muscle imbalances
and improper joint alignments. The physical
therapist will conduct a detailed evaluation, which includes
an analysis of gait, foot alignment, upper body
strength, hip alignment and spine alignment.
With an adjustment of running technique and
correction of muscle imbalances, the therapist will get
you on your feet so that you can walk (and possibly
run) if your body allows it.
The best thing for you to do right now is call for
an evaluation of your movement patterns before you
start a walking or running program. We can also create
a rehabilitation program if you are currently experiencing
any discomfort while walking or running.
Your body deserves the right kind of care. Call us
directly and if treatments are necessary, we can coordinate
with your MD. Your recovery is our expertise!
NATURE CALLS – Norwood Community Garden – Busting with Opportunity
By Amy Beaumont
Situated at the top of the grassy
hillside beyond the Little League
Field there grows a garden – a
community garden, that is. If
you’ve driven along Mylod Street
and caught a glimpse of folks
gardening, you know just where
Endean Park is. The garden has
expanded since it first sprouted
in 2012, and now has 72 8 x 16
shared plots. Now moving into
its fifth year, this community garden
is a perfect example of how
change starts with just one person.
Garden Manager Susan Clare
recalls having the idea for such a
garden here in town.
"I’d never grown anything in
New England before this," Clare
said." I’d try a rosemary or a lavender
plant each year and usually
kill one of them, plant-a-cide was
more like it,” she laughed.
Even though Clare knew little
to nothing about gardening, she
got permission to move forward
with one and within two months
she had 32 gardeners. Among that
group were two master gardeners,
which Susan relied heavily upon
for the garden’s successful start-up
process.
Perhaps the only downside to
community garden since its start
up is not being able to keep up
with the demand. There is a waiting
list of 30 people who want to
join in, but the current space just
isn’t large enough to accommodate
all.
It breaks my heart sometimes
that I can’t provide that space for
them,” Susan explained. “Hopefully,
other areas in Norwood can
be developed into gardens at some
point.”
She makes a good point also
that many businesses in town have
vast areas available around their
dwellings that sit dormant.
“Many businesses spend annually
on shrubs and flowers, but
think of the possibilities of a simple
herb garden," Clare said.
For now, the community garden
at Mylod Street is it, but it
serves as a shining example of
what more can be developed in
other parts of Norwood. While
the cost to the town is in the form
of water, Norwood receives much
in return. What started out as an
alternative for those who may otherwise
not have an adequate area
at their own residences to plant
has yielded a world of communal
growth. Friendships have been
born, valuable knowledge has
been shared and ideas have been
cultivated. One of those ideas
was to give back to the Norwood
Food Pantry. One plot within the
garden is designated solely for the
food pantry. While most food pantries
have plenty of canned goods,
most have no fresh produce to
offer to those in
need. Saturdays
have been the
designated day
for folks to share
what they’ve
grown with the
pantry, and the
idea has continued
to grow.
The community
garden has
a table handy,
and gardeners
routinely donate their produce to
help feed the hungry.
“Let’s all feed each other,"
Susan said, “Let’s just make it
healthy food.”
Another great idea in the
works is supplying simple recipes
with that produce to give folks
truly delicious ways to enjoy it.
Also enjoying time in the garden
are those with developmental disabilities.
One plot is designated for
Lifeworks, a group which provides
education, jobs and housing for
these adults. Empowering developmentally
disabled adults to lead
more meaningful lives within their
own community is part of the
group’s mission statement.
As for Norwood’s Community
Garden, they have far surpassed
their mission statement
of responsible stewardship of the
earth. They’ve educated residents
about the importance of farm-totable
produce and the pride that
comes with growing your own
food. More importantly, the garden
embraces organic practices.
Too many of us are too quick to
grab the cheapest produce off the
shelf at our local market with little
attention to where it may have
come from, and the practices used
that each one of us needs to do
a better job of consuming foods
free of toxins. Much of the food
chain in this country is polluted
with dangerous chemicals. Many
crops are routinely sprayed with
pesticides in an effort to yield bigger
crops in less time, thus generating
a bigger profit. But one can
navigate their way through a contaminated
food chain by merely
reading labels. And don’t worry
about the FDA regulating organic
themselves. Changing the 1 in 3
Premium Veterinary Service Right at your Door
No time for veterinary visits?
Pets anxious riding in the car?
Tired of waiting in crowded waiting
rooms? Dr. Michael Gerber,
a Massachusetts licensed veterinarian,
of Pawsitively Mobile
Veterinary Services can eliminate
the stress of those veterinary visits
with just one phone call. Pets
will receive stress-free exams and
their owners a new patient 15%
discount!
Dr. Gerber founded Pawsitively
Mobile Veterinary Services in early
2016 and began seeing patients
in his brand new custom-built,
28-foot mobile veterinary clinic.
Together with his state-of-the-art
mobile clinic, and his exceptional
veterinary education and training,
Dr. Gerber’s four-legged patients
receive the best personalized care
in the area within the comforts of
their home.
Dr. Gerber graduated from
Western University of Health
Services with his veterinary degree
in 2010, and was accepted
into a highly coveted, advanced,
post-graduate internship in medicine
and surgery at the prestigious
Animal Medical Center in Manhattan’s
Upper East Side. During
the 13-month intense training program,
working alongside some of
the most respected and talented
veterinary specialists in the nation,
he gained valuable knowledge
and experience in several
veterinary specialties, including,
internal medicine, surgery, neurology,
cardiology, ophthalmology,
radiology, dentistry, oncology and
emergency/critical care. Within
a staff of 100 veterinarians that
is comprised of intern doctors,
resident doctors and staff specialists,
The Animal Medical Center
is one of the largest private, small
animal teaching/referral hospitals
in the country. Founded in
1910, it is also one of the oldest.
The Animal Medical Center has
a very large case load which affords
its veterinarians the opportunities
to experience a very wide
array of both complicated, routine
and unusual cases. Completing a
year-long internship at the Animal
Medical Center is equivalent to at
least five years of experience in
general practice.
With his mobile veterinary
service and diverse medical background,
Dr. Gerber is able to provide
virtually any service offered
at a traditional brick and mortar
veterinary facility. Those diverse
services include the following:
• Routine wellness care (including
vaccines)
• Sick visits
• Lab work, including heartworm
and tick screening, full
chemistry and CBC, urinalysis
• Fecal testing
• Microchipping
• Dentistry
• X-rays
• Surgery
• In-house/point of care labs/
diagnostics
• Hospice care
• Euthanasia
• International and domestic
health certificates
While Dr. Gerber initially considered
a career as a specialist in
emergency and critical care (E/
CC), a specialty he found both
challenging and rewarding at
AMC, there was a facet of E/CC
that didn't completely fit with his
long-term, animal care goal aspirations.
"I liked the complexity of the
cases and the adrenaline surge of
triaging emergencies, but I wanted
to get to know and see a pet not
only in crisis, but during good
times as well," Dr. Gerber said.
"And getting to know the people
and form lasting relationships with
them… that is something you really
don’t get as a critical care specialist."
After graduating from the intern
program at AMC in July
2011, Dr. Gerber worked in both
emergency/specialty referral hospitals
as well as in general practices.
When designing his truck, he
drew on his experience at AMC
working with the latest medical
equipment and personally handpicked
every piece of equipment
in his clinic to accommodate all
pets and potential conditions.
With those advanced tools and his
extensive veterinary background,
he now looks forward to helping
animals through all stages of their
good health.
"My experience and training
allow me to problem solve cases
at a higher level," Dr. Gerber said.
Dr. Gerber's mobile practice
also allows him the flexibility to
give back to the community and
homeless pets. Once a week, he
travels to the Norwood Petco and
performs cat examinations at the
Bay State Animal Cooperative, an
all-volunteer cat rescue organization.
Pawsitively Mobile Veterinary
Services’ clients will find rates
similar to fixed-location veterinary
practices (with an additional
travel fee) and will receive the personalized
service that can only be
found through a concierge service.
An average house call is approximately
one hour and pets will receive
a complete examination
within the comforts of their own
home by Dr. Gerber and his certified
veterinary technician, Tim
Levesque. To learn more about
Root for your fellow residents
at the Abundant Table's Ultimate
Team Challenge!
It's Norwood's version of the
legendary tv show 'Battle of the
Network Stars, and the stars of
this event are fellow local residents!
On June 18, at 2 p.m., the
Norwood High School football
field will be transformed into an
obstacle course to raise funds for
The Abundant Table, and the
Norwood community is invited to
attend.
The event will host 20 'Dream
Teams' of ten participants that
will compete in head-to-head contests.
The course will include 8-10
stages of physical and entertaining
obstacles for each team to maneuver
and the fastest team of the day
will be crowned The Ultimate
Challengers!
"I've been thinking about this
for a long time," Abundant Table
board member and organizer
Laurie Shea said. "Kids are involved
in sports for a
long time, but adults
do not have as much of
an opportunity to compete.
It's part of who we
are."
Each team is required
to raise a minimum
of $5,000 directly
from their supporters and there is
still time to sponsor these generous
competitors who have volunteered
to put it all out there on the
field. To preview the squads and
lend just a little financial backing,
visit the Abundant Table website
at www.abundant-table.org.
Monetary donations will also be
accepted the day of the event. In
lieu of admission, spectators are
also encouraged to bring a nonperishable
item, such as peanut
butter, boxed pasta, jelly, tuna fish
or canned goods.
All money raised from the
event will be donated directly to
the Abundant Table, a non-profit,
all volunteer organization that
provides free weekly meals to individuals
and families in the Greater
Boston area, including Norwood,
Dedham, Walpole, Canton and
Westwood. The Abundant Table
was launched in 2003, and began
serving one person for its first few
weeks. Today, it welcomes 60-80
guests on Wednesday and Friday
evenings serving hot and healthy
meals. It also manages a daily
meals on wheels program to 55
individuals.
The Abundant Table operates
solely on donations and fundraisers,
which is why this aggressive
event spearheaded by Shea is so
important. They also raise funds
through grants, corporate donations,
community events, organized
food drives and individual
food and monetary contributions.
The Abundant Table is located
within the First Congregational
Church, Pingree Hall, 100 Winter
St., and hosts dinner hours
Wednesdays and Fridays, 5:30-
6:30 p.m. For more information
on the Abundant Table or to donate,
call 978-501-1264, visit their
website at www.abundant-table.
org or mail a check to: The Abundant
Table, Inc., P.O. Box 109,
Norfolk, MA 02056.
Shea is also currently recruiting
volunteers to help the day of
the event. If interested in lending
assistance, contact Shea at laurieshea@live.com.
Norwood residents are exceptional
in supporting their local
community and this fundraiser
is another valuable example how
neighbors reach out and give their
time and money to aid one another.
Of course, in true Norwood
fashion, the day will also prove to
be an entertaining and fun event
for the entire family! Mark the calendar
for June 18, gather the kids,
family and friends and enjoy an
afternoon that demonstrates Norwood's
true generous spirit!

It May Be the Flu, but It May Be Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease often goes undiagnosed
as the symptoms often
mimic the flu. When symptoms
last several weeks, those signs
should be followed up with a
blood test. Lyme Disease is typically
treated with doxycycline.
This antibiotic, however, is not always
effective, especially with the
many co-infections of Lyme, such
as Borellia, Bartonella, Babesia,
Rickettsia and Rocky Mountain
Spotted Fever.
According to the Center for
Disease Control (CDC), an estimated
300,000 Americans are
diagnosed with Lyme Disease
each year, and the numbers are
rising. Although it is believed that
Lyme is a result of a tick bite, the
Norwood Hospital
Welcomes The Loopy Bag
Norwood Hospital’s pediatric
team recently welcomed Laura
Reid and representatives from
her non-profit organization, The
Loopy Bag, to the hospital. The
Loopy Bag provides children in
the hospital with activities to keep
their minds and hands busy. These
anxiety-reducing activities include:
books, puzzles, coloring books,
painting projects and many other
small, age appropriate activities.
The goal of The Loopy Bag
is to help make being in the hospital
less painful for both the
child and their parent/guardian.
The Loopy Bag provides
gift bags for infants to preteens
and even provides some essentials
for moms and dads dealing
with unexpected hospitalization
of a child. For more information
infectious bacteria can be spread
by other biting or blood-sucking
insects, including mosquitoes, spiders,
fleas and mites.
Common effects of tick bites
include an itchy “bull's-eye,” but
this rash only occurs in about half
of those infected. Other symptoms
include unrelenting fatigue, recurring
fever, headaches/migraines
and achy muscles and joints.
For six years Pauline suffered
with various ailments, including
muscle aches, joint pains, brain
fog, extreme fatigue and unrelenting
headaches. Her primary care
physician diagnosed Lyme Disease,
prescribed doxycycline, and
notified her several weeks later she
was successfully treated for Lyme.
An appointment with a Rheumatologist
for her “arthritic” condition
resulted in a prescription for
antidepressants, a side effect of
dealing with the pain. Pauline felt
her life was slowly slipping away.
A referral to the Holistic Center
at Bristol Square set her on a new
path. At the center Pauline was
diagnosed with Bartonella, a coinfection
of Lyme, and was treated
STRATEGIES
by Jim Ambrose and George Grant
George Grant
MANAGING RISK
One of the top priorities of any business owner, CEO, or risk management officer is to identify
potential risks and have insurance coverage in place that will guard against any damage that they
might incur from these dangers. Once the risks have been identified, they should be prioritized on
the basis of their probability of occurring. To help with this assessment, actuarial tables can provide
statistical analysis of the probability of any risk occurring, after which the financial damage ensuing
from the occurrence of the risk can be gauged. While some risks may be quite obvious (fire insurance
for businesses occupying physical space), more obscure risks (embezzlement, theft, and fraud) are no
less legitimate.
All concerts are rain or shine. Best listening spots are on the Town Common or in the upper parking lot
behind the Town Hall off Central Street. Tours of the bell-tower are available after most concerts.
Norwood's Fifty-Bell Memorial Carillon was cast by Gillett and Johnston, Bellfounders, Croydon,
England and, together with the Norwood Memorial Building and Tower, was dedicated on Armistice
Day, November 11, 1928. The instrument was a gift to his fellow townspeople from the late Walter F.
Tilton, a prominent local banker and civic leader.
The Carillon Concert Series is sponsored by the Town of Norwood and by special gifts from the
Norwood Women's Community Committee and from the family of Betsy Dobson, and by private
Norfolk County Real
Estate Still Posting
Positive Results
by Bella Caggiano
Snowfall was light in the
winter of 2016, and while the
weather may or may not influence
home sales, numbers do
not lie. According to Register
of Deeds William P. O'Donnell,
Norfolk County real estate experienced
strong 1st quarter in
terms of sales and number of
transactions.
“The 1st quarter of 2016
saw a robust market with total
volume of commercial and
residential real estate sales coming
in at $1.48 billion, a solid
12% increase from the same
time period in 2015," Registrar
O'Donnell said. "In addition,
the number of real estate sales
transactions increased a healthy
18% for the quarter."
There is, however, a category
where numbers did not pan out
as well. The average sale price
of commercial and residential
real estate fell 9% to $721,660.
"It is too early to know
whether a market correction is
underway relative to real estate
sales price or this figure represents
a onetime aberration,”
Register O’Donnell noted.
Are there subtle signs of
some changes coming in the
local real estate market? While
the increases were good, mortgages
did see a slight reduction.
“Regarding the mortgage
market, the total number of
mortgages recorded was 6,504,
a 3% reduction from 1st quarter
2015," O'Donnell said. "We
will need to watch this number
closely to see if a trend is occurring.”
While the number of mortgages
dipped, however, total
mortgage financing increased to
$4.0 billion, that's a 39% jump!
Some of this increase though
can be largely attributed to a
commercial mortgage that was
recorded in February.”
Foreclosure activity continues
to rise. The number of
foreclosure deeds recorded in
Norfolk County for the 2016
first quarter was 76, which is
a 4% increase from the same
time period last year. More diappointing
on this end was the
increase in number of Notice
to Foreclose Mortgage filings,
which rose from 214 this year
from 136 in the same timeframe
in 2015.
“I agree with the prevailing
feeling that the increased foreclosure
filings are attributable
to lending institutions working
through past delinquent mortgage
loans, some going back
to the 2008 economic downturn,"
Registrar O'Donnell
said. "While we sometimes get
caught up in looking at these
numbers as statistics, it should
be noted that foreclosures have
a very human face. “
To help those facing a foreclosure,
the Registry continues
to partner with Quincy Community
Action Programs at
(617) 479-8181 ext-376 and
Neighbor Works Southern
Mass at (508) 598-0950 for
those who have received a Notice
to Foreclose Mortgage from
a lender. Another option for
homeowners is to call the Massachusetts
Attorney General’s
HomeCorps program at (617)
573-5333.
Overall, the Norfolk County
Registrar is confident with this
year's first quarter numbers.
“I am encouraged by the
1st quarter results of real estate
activity in Norfolk County,"
Registrar O'Donnell said. "I
believe the favorable weather
we experienced compared to
the past winter spurred activity.
It’s pretty clear that Norfolk
County remains an attractive
location for individuals, families
and businesses to live and work.
As long as the eastern Massachusetts
economy remains vibrant
and real estate inventory
does not take a significant dip,
we should be able to maintain
this market momentum. Overall,
Norfolk County appears
to be moving towards a robust
spring real estate season.”
The days are ticking down now, too quickly for
my taste. Soon enough, my youngest child will be
leaving Prescott Elementary School and moving to
Coakley Middle School.
I am flooded with memories of how my now
fifth grader was first brought to the Prescott. A bald,
squishy, adorable one month old, in Santa emblazoned
pajamas. All the kids wanted to hold her-except
of course, her older brother.
I remember Brie’s very first field day, running
behind me, desperately trying to catch the obstacle
course for her older siblings. She clapped her hands
and tried to call out names through her pacifier as
kids competed in relay races and the tug of war.
For years she was couldn’t push herself on the
swing or reach the monkey bars. Then one day she
could-I wish now I could remember that day, like so
many others.
My family has been at Prescott School for fourteen
years. I’ve made many Mommie friends, and
I’m sure a few enemies as well.
After 14 years, the faces and families change
but the feelings stay the same. For many, elementary
school is all about the firsts-for our kids and
ourselves. Friendships can be made and hearts can
be broken. There is homework, gym class, and field
trips. Projects to be completed and on time, packed
schedules -including sports, playing a musical instrument,
or even volunteer work. And for many of us
moms, we drop off, ship to, and basically wing it.
Not paying much attention, just surviving each day.
Yet the time keeps ticking by.
We await the summers with no projects, no
homework, no time tables. But we forget –there is
a catch.
For every summer that passes, a grade is completed.
Our kids get bigger, and eventually their
schools and lives change. And many of us don’t
have time to notice because we are too busy dropping
off, feeding, and on some days, just keeping our
kids alive.
Then one day, after five years, the school changes,
along with newer friends, new teachers, and other issues.
For those of you that have younger children-be
it at the Balch, Callahan, Cleveland, or Oldham
Schools, the years just fly.
For those of you that have more than one child,
when your oldest goes up to the Middle School-remember
you still have your grammar school roots.
If only for a while.
You will still see your Mommie friends, make
play dates for your kids. There will be Halloween
and holiday parties you may volunteer for. Life will
continue at your grammar school. So as big as the
changes may be for your eldest child, you still have
a foot in the door of your younger one’s grammar
school where it all began.
I have seen Prescott change over the past few
years. Mostly for the good, parents (usually the
same ones every year) are involved. Kids still play
four square at recess. The bottle project and Capron
Zoo are still fourth and fifth grade hits.
My kids grew and thrived at Prescott. The Principal,
Mrs. Killion, and her staff of caring, capable
teachers (a few I am proud to say are my friends)
helped my kids read, write, grow, and blossom. At
one point, the now retired school nurse, kept me
calm when my son split his head open on the playground.
A Mommie friend, grabbed my baby as
the two of us had an ambulance adventure. Which
makes me grateful to the school nurses for keeping
me sane and my children alive.
For those of you in the same boat, with the last
of your children heading to the Coakley next year,
with new adventures and new dramas, let’s enjoy the
last few weeks at our kids’ grammar school. Because
in September, the next school starts, whether we are
ready or not.
Marc Cusano from Borchers
Trust Law will present the latest
trends and legal changes affecting
your estate planning, including
taxation, long-term nursing home
planning, asset protection, and
potential traps regarding various
trust arrangements. The following
questions will be addressed: What
is a trust, and do you still need
one? Are trusts useful for nursing
home planning? What about the
death tax and the capital gains tax?
What are the Killer Ds, and are
your beneficiaries protected from
them? Is your estate plan current
Cruising To a Successful Weight Loss
New England Fat Loss Client Clocks Many
Miles to Achieve His Goal
East Wareham resident Jeff
Monast admits he was initially
hesitant to commit to the onehour
drive to join New England
Weight Loss (NEFL). Once he met
Dr. John and the NEFL staff and
learned about the program, however,
the commute was a minimal
goals.
"When I first heard it was so
far away, I thought, ‘That really
stinks,’ but after my experience, it
is well worth the drive," Monast
said.
According to forty-two yearold
Monast, the stimulus to walk
through that door on April 15
far outweighed inconvenience.
He was experiencing lack of energy
and was intrigued with their
20-to-40-pounds-lost-in-40-days
guarantee.
"I don't know what clicked in
my head, but I honestly couldn't
recommend it enough," Monast
said. "I've been fighting my weight
since I've been 10 years old, and I
honestly did not think it would be
this easy to lose the weight.
While being interviewed on
day 23 of his first stage, Monast
had dropped 34.9 pounds, already
within reach of that first significant
goal. The food combinations,
daily weight reports and office
visits guided the way, but Monast
also found Dr. John's assistance invaluable.
"I knew I would have no time
to prepare meals during one weekend
and we went back and forth
with ideas," Monast said. He is
very accessible."
Monast is thrilled with his success
of the Phase 1 portion of the
program, but is motivated to enter
the next stage. Through an extensive
diagnostic process, the NEFL
team will identify specific foods
to work with his individual body
chemistry and trigger additional
weight loss.
"Once I get through the 40
days, they give me a list of my personal
weight-burning foods that
are good for my body make up,"
Monast said. "I'm pretty excited to
see what they are."
From the beginning, nothing
has come in the way of Monast
reaching his weight loss goals. Not
miles, time or commitment. His
true drive, however, comes from
his family.
"This is a lifestyle change not a
diet, and my number one reason
is because I have a beautiful wife
and two beautiful children that I
want to be around a long time for,"
Monast said.
Norwood Boys Tennis
Norwood Sports
by Christopher Tremblay
In the past, Norwood has sent a
lot of talented tennis players onto
the court to face off with its Bay
State Conference (BSC) foes. Entering
this spring, the Mustangs
will be a little short on experience
as the squad has only two seniors
in Luke Andrews and John McCarey
wielding their tennis rackets.
“Norwood had some good
years but after 2013 we lost a lot
of talent and no one seemed interested
in coming out for the team,"
Norwood Coach John Churchill
said. "Tennis takes a lot of commitment
and unfortunately the
kids of today have other obligations
with the economy affecting
the athletes in different ways. As
a team, I’m looking to be more
competitive this year. We have a
lot of young athletes that do not
have a lot of varsity experience.”
Andrews, who currently finds
himself playing second singles for
Norwood, is one of three Mustang
captains. According to Churchill,
the senior didn’t find his groove
right away and lost some challenge
matches that left him at second
singles. Although playing on the
second court, he does have the potential
to move up if he plays well.
McCarey was a starter two
years ago but found himself on
the sidelines watching his teammates
last spring due to an injury.
He is coming back after the year
off playing first doubles with freshman
Sai Nedunchezhian.
“We’re still looking to find the
appropriate partner for John and
once we do he’s going to have
to adjust to that individual,” the
coach said. “Sai has some experience
and looking to play on a
regular basis. Earlier he notched a
few wins teaming up with Luke.”
In addition to Andrews, Ram
Goli and Yash Aryaputra are the
other two captains looking to lead
the Mustangs this spring. Churchill
likes that his captains have established
themselves into leadership
type players. The coach continues
to advise his tri-captains, ‘The
more you put into it, the more you
get out.’
Thus far, Goli has been the
mainstay at first singles for the
Mustangs. He is a highly motivated
individual who stands up to
any challenge sent his way. Aryaputra
rounds out the singles players
holding court at third singles;
in terms of talent he is very close
to McCarey. Either player can
finds themselves playing singles or
doubles, it will all depend on the
circumstance.
“Yash provided the leadership
and stepped up in John’s absence
when we opened the season,”
Churchill said. “Our top four players
are all very close in talent, but
Ram still holds onto the top spot
as he plays more in the off season
and it has shown.”
Rounding out the starters is
the second doubles team which
is made up of three different athletes.
Freshman David Sparks is a
consistent player trying to work
his way up to varsity level play,
while freshman Tommy Connor
and sophomore Greg Zambrano
are looking to gain more experience.
Entering the season Norwood
had only eight athletes making up
this year’s team. With tennis being
a game that takes a lot of dedication,
Churchill likes what he has
seen with this group.
“The kids that feel that the
sport is worth the commitment
have stepped up and are looking
to improve their game,” the coach
said.
Playing in the BSC, Churchill
knows that his young team is no
match for the likes of Newton
North, Brookline (a Division 1
State challenger), Needham and
Wellesley.
“We can’t concentrate on trying
to beat the top teams, there is
nothing that we can do about that
at this point,” Churchill said. “All
we can do is focus on what we do
best; play competitive when we
can and the rest will take care of
itself.”
For the first time since the 2013
season Norwood was able to break
into the win column on the tennis
courts by defeating Weymouth
3-2. Despite the Mustangs top
two singles players falling, Aryaputra
grabbed the win in third singles
impressively at 6-4, 6-1, while
both doubles teams (McCarey and
Nedunchezhian, 3-6, 7-6 (5) and
6-4) and (Sparks and Zambrano,
6-3, 7-5 ) closed things out with
wins. The second doubles win was
the first of their varsity careers for
both Zambrano and Sparks.
Twice as Nice State Champions!
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated May 1-7, as Youth Week to honor
America’s Junior Citizens for their accomplishments.
Last month, Norwood Local Lodge #1124 recognized 2 local State Champs from its hoop
contest held this fall and winter.
Winners Maren Giambanco and Emma Matruro went on to win Districts and become
State Champs. Each competed in Portland with their family’s cheering them on and both
finished in top 3. Truly a great accomplishment!
Norwood Elks presented the state champion jackets and $100 savings bonds.
The Elks' nationwide sanctioned program gives youngsters an opportunity for spirited competition,
build relationships with their peers, and travel statewide, regionally and nationally at
minimal expense to their parents or school. The parents of finalists at the state, regional and
national levels attend the competition as guests of the Elks.
The Local lodge would like to thank all the kids who participated, all the volunteers who
run the program and its great working relationship with Norwood’s Basketball Association
NBA.
What’s better than back-to-back Champs? You guessed it; we are looking for another state
champ so look for the local competition next fall and practice those free throws!

Norwood Girl’s Lacrosse
by Christopher Tremblay
For the past two years, the Norwood
girl’s lacrosse team has been
sent home in the Quarter Final
round of the Division 1 South
Tournament. First year Coach
Jennifer Fox may be unfamiliar
with the Mustangs play, but is hoping
to get the team moving in the
right direction this spring.
“Coming in, I only knew what
I had heard," Fox said. "Having
never coached high school lacrosse
before nor ever seeing Norwood
play, I really didn’t know what I
was getting into. This team is very
talented and I’ve been extremely
impressed with everyone on it.
We’ve incorporated a philosophy
'Get Better than Yesterday.'”
The first year coach has impressed
with the senior leadership
of the team’s tri-captains: Hannah
Benson, Maura O’Neil and Val
Quinlan. All three athletes also
play field hockey with Benson and
O’Neil playing basketball as well.
Fox likes well groomed athletes
such as her Norwood captains.
“I wish I could have had this
type of leadership on my college
teams,” the new Mustang coach
said. “These girls won’t settle and
they don’t let the rest of the team
settle either. You just can’t teach
this; they took to my lacrosse philosophy
and handed it down to the
team.”
Another senior who has taken
her game to the next level is goalie
Alex Dimitrio. Fox has a lot of admiration
for someone like Dimitrio
who puts her body on the line
each game.
“Everyone keeps telling me
that her focus and commitment
this year has really improved.,"
Fox said. "Alex has a passion for
the game and seems to be really
into it. Playing goalie in this league
is tough and something that I
couldn’t do. Although she’s taking
a lot of shots at high speeds,
she continues to stay focused at all
times.”
In the past, Norwood has been
inclined to have one or two athletes
that could play at the top of
their game on the offensive side of
the field. While O’Neil and Quinlan
will be the go to goal scorers
(each tallied five goals against Ursuline
Academy), the rest of the
team will be involved.
“Maura and Val will be our
top goal scorers with things trickling
down from there; they will
definitely carry the load,” Fox said.
“In the past, it’s been a one or two
man show, but this year we’re getting
all 7 attack players involved in
the offense.”
A handful of other Mustangs
have caught the coach’s eye with
their play on the field. Seniors
Erin Kelley and Maddie Lamond
Norwood Sports
on attack and Siobhan O’Malley
on defense, as well as junior Coley
Hayes have been a breath of fresh
air for the first-year high school
coach.
“As a junior, Coley has already
shown me that she is going to
carry this team next year as an attack
/ midfielder,” Fox said.
As the season progresses, Fox
foresees the Mustangs being able
to make it into the tournament.
“The girls all have the skill and
knowledge of the game,” Fox said.
“If we continue to get good productivity
out of them on the field
and they stay focused, there is no
reason we shouldn’t make it into
the tournament. What we do in
practice should translate onto the
field and with that I’m confident.”
PET CORNER
Meet Byron:
Byron
has a dignified,
laid-back
personality
and he
gets along
with other
cats and
tolerates
dogs as
well. He
is also
very social,
and likes to hang out with his
people. He is affectionate, loves attention
and being brushed. Byron
keeps tabs on all the action-- he
will park himself wherever he
can monitor the hustle and bustle
going on in the house. Bryon is
estimated to be around 5 ½ years
of age and his affectionate and
easy-going personality makes him
a great candidate for a family. We
are not sure how Byron ended up
injured and wandering the streets
but he was a sad sight when he
was rescued. Byrons’ wounds
had become infected and he has
since been nursed back to health.
This handsome boy has adjusted
quickly to being an indoor cat- a
good indication that he was once a
family pet. Please consider Byron
for your forever pet. You can meet
Byron at the Petco Adoption Center
in Norwood!
the family was unable to take him
in. One of our volunteers was in
the right place at the right time to
welcome him to or community of
cats seeking new homes. He is a bit
distraught living in a strange place
without all the luxuries of a home
but is coming along just fine. His
human mom was in a wheelchair
Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria, Borrellia
Borgdorferi, transmitted by the Deer tick. This
a preventable disease if your beloved pet is given
appropriate preventatives on a regular basis. The
disease is also very easily detected with a simple
blood test. In most cases this is the same blood test
used to analyze for heartworm so it’s something all
pet owners should take care of annually for their
dogs. The preventative is cheap compared to the
treatment and risks after the disease is contracted.
Common clinical signs of this disease are high
fever, lameness, joint swelling and lethargy. See
your veterinarian and be proactive to protect your
dog! As you may or may not know, this is a disease
humans can also contract from the Deer tick. Be
diligent about checking your pet, yourself, and your
children after outdoor play especially if you are in
tall grass or wooded areas. Use veterinarian recommended
flea and tick products to prevent this
disease from affecting your dog.
Heartworm Disease
Heart worm disease (Dirofilaria Immitis) is
serious and can be fatal whether treated or not.
Though most common in dogs, cats can also contract
the disease. Treatment is expensive and risky
in dogs and there is not treatment for our feline
friends. Screening your pets annual with a simple
blood test to detect this disease is most important.
Prevention is the key in regards to this disease. The
cost to prevent it far outweighs the cost to treat it
in your pet dog and it can be a death sentence to
your cat. The mosquito is the culprit spreading the
disease from one infected animal to another animal.
The worms live in the blood and tissues and
migrate to the heart and organs over a period of
months. Clinical signs in dogs may include; exercise
intolerance, coughing and heart failure. Signs
in cats are much more dramatic; sneezing/coughing,
collapse and sudden death.
Own a Piece of Paradise
Ever dream of owning a home
in Florida? What if you could
own a home near Disney and see
return on your real estate by using
as a rental, with no extra work on
your part?
“We are only a couple of miles
from Disney World,” says Matt
Montalvo, who moved to the Florida
area from Central Massachusetts
10 years ago. “When we sell
a home, we can put owners into
our vacation rental program. Buyers
have an option where they can
use it strictly as a second home or
rent it out as a vacation home. We
oversee, maintain, manage and
market the property.”
Homes range in size from 2,000
to 20,000 square feet, condominiums
and town homes perfect for
retirees and vacation homes for
families to sprawling estate homes
for corporate executives. All have
private swimming pools and are
located in golf resorts that feature
golf, water parks and even restaurants
among their amenities.
“All of them are professionally
managed and maintained, beautiful
luxury estate homes,” says
Montalvo.
