Contact Canadian embassies and consulates abroad, if you need to get help in case of emergency when you
are travelling in a foreign country. Call the nearest embassy or consulate. or 1 613 996 8885 (call collect
where available)
CURRENCY
Peru’s unit of currency is the Nuevo Sol.
Exchange currency only at authorized outlets such as exchange kiosks, banks and hotels. Only exchange
what you feel you will need while visiting. Do not to convert currency through unofficial, “black market”
vendors. Save all receipts from any currency transaction. You may be asked to produce them when you
exit the country, and they are required if you intend to reconvert local currency.
The U.S. dollar is as readily accepted throughout Peru as the local currency. However, notes should be
clean and in good condition since foreign bills will be closely examined by merchants and anything that
looks suspicious will be rejected. When leaving a small gratuity however, it is best to tip in local currency.
Most stores and restaurants prefer cash. Carrying dollars in smaller denominations will facilitate your
transactions. ATM access is available in limited locations in major cities and many dispense $20 bills.
We suggest travelling with some U.S. dollars and at least two major credit cards. (Some merchants may
tag on a surcharge of between 6%-10% for credit card purchases). If you have a “Chip and PIN” card, be
careful to shield your number from view while entering it on a keypad; never disclose your PIN verbally.
Notify your credit card company of your travel plans prior to your departure to avoid any fraud concerns.
We do not recommend traveler’s checks as they are not as widely accepted as in previous years.
HEALTH
It is a good idea to read up on any health issues or concerns related to your destination. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers current health information; it can be reached at 800-232-4636
or online at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel.
Required vaccination(s) None
We suggest that you see a healthcare provider at least 4-6 weeks before your departure to allow time for
any vaccinations or treatments to take effect. If your journey includes travel to high-altitude Andean
destinations in Peru, you may experience altitude sickness. Please consult your healthcare provider for
suggestions on prevention and treatment.
WEATHER
Peru’s borders are made up of the Amazon rainforest, the Andes Mountains and the South Pacific Ocean
and these dramatically different landscapes also make for distinct weather conditions. The coast is
predominantly arid and mild, the Andean region is temperate to cold, and the eastern lowlands are
tropically warm and humid.
In Peru, the seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere and winter occurs during the months of
June through August. The highland regions, which include Machu Picchu, Cusco and Lake Titicaca, average
daytime temperatures in the 60s and low 70s with chilly nights.
Along Peru’s sprawling coastline the weather is generally pleasant year-round, although from May to
September, rain clouds usually roll in during the afternoon. The Amazon is hot and humid with
temperatures ranging from 86 – 100 F. The region’s dry season lasts from May to October and from
November to April heavy downpours are common. Use a website such as weather.com to find average
temperatures and rainfall during your travel times.
ELECTRICAL SERVICE
Peru - 220 volts and 50 hertz.
WHAT TO PACK
Daytime attire: Pack comfortable, casual clothing in natural, breathable fabrics. Temperatures will change
as altitudes and time of day change, so it’s best to bring shorts as well as long trousers, and clothing you
can layer.
