Progress Hams It Up For Local Projects 

A long disused lottery wheel found under the 

Progress Hall has been re-vitalised to raise 

money for local projects. 

The wheel in a state of disrepair and badly in 

need of TLC and a 

fresh coat of 

paint has been 

restored to its 

former glory and 

used at the April 

markets. 

Progress Vice- 

President, Jim 

Wight said the 

wheel has been 

restored by local 

volunteers and 

p r o f e s s i o n a l l y 

sign written to 

give it a new 

lease of life. 

“The wheel 

raised over $500 

at the April 

market with all 

the proceeds 

going to local 

projects. 

We chose the site 

at the Tom and Minnie Young Hall to attract a 

crowd as visitors entered the markets. 

Many younger visitors had not previously seen a 

ham wheel in action so it created a lot of 

interest and quite a bit of fun. 

Most importantly it raised funds for local 

projects. 

Our aim is to donate funds to CoalFest and raise 

money to fence the off-leash dog park in 

Howard.

meat from 

Howard Butchery 

most people we 

approached were 

keen to put their 

hand in their 

pocket. 

If we can get 

s u f f i c i e n t 

numbers of 

volunteers to run 

the ham wheel it 

will become a 

p e r m a n e n t 

feature of the 

markets. 

Volunteers don’t 

have to give up a 

whole morning – 

just an hour or 

two from 7:00am through till mid morning. Its 

good fun for a good cause.

The new Progress committee headed off to 

a great start with all members fully 

committed to a busy and productive year. 

The growth in membership continued with 

two new membership applications being 

accepted. 

Secretary Carrol and Minutes Secretary 

Julie gave us a comprehensive set of 

agenda and minutes documents to guide 

the meeting. 

Treasurer Elaine has downloaded a new 

accounting program to provide members 

with a trial balance at each meeting. 

Upgrading of the Progress accounting data 

will provide the committee with an 

improved understanding of expenditure 

and much better ability to provide 

community funding. 

To enhance facilities at the Progress Hall a 

gambling fund application is underway to 

provide sound equipment, data project and 

large monitor. 

As well as making meetings more enjoyable 

it is hoped that the equipment will enhance 

the ability to lease the hall, which is 

currently underutilised. 

Progress members attended the Coal Seam 

Gas meeting in Maryborough to report 

back to the May meeting of the 

implications of Coal Seam Gas for our 

community.

they are sworn in to discuss a number of 

community projects including: landscaping 

the skatepark, upgrading Weir One and 

fencing the off-leash dog park. 

The fate of Power House Park will continue 

to be raised. 

In addition to providing $2000 to Coalfest, 

Progress would run a fancy dress 

competition and put a float in the Parade. 

The search is on for a suitable candidate to 

represent Progress in the Coalfest Princess 

competition. 

It was agreed that the new Progress ham 

wheel which raised funds for fencing the 

dog park and Coalfest at the April markets 

would become a permanent feature 

outside the Tom and Minnie Young Hall 

each market day. 

Committee member Fleur has arranged for 

AHC Managing Director, Rod Macleod, to 

address the July Progress meeting (11 th 

July, Progress Hall Torbanlea, 7:00pm) 

regarding the new housing development in 

Howard. Members of the community are 

welcome to attend to hear his address. 

If you can assist with the printing and 

delivery of the Burrum River News, sell 

tickets for the Ham Wheel at the markets 

once a month, or would like to be more 

actively involved in your community,

Coalfest is just around the corner 

and once more the Progress 

Association will be running a fancy 

dress competition for kids to add to 

the colour and excitement of the 

festival. 

A new addition this year will be a 

costume competition for adults. 

Prizes will be awarded for the best 

male and female heritage costume. 

Kids prizes will be for three age 

groups; under 7, under 11 and under 14 

Think hats, gloves, ankle length dresses for the 

ladies and braces, waistcoats and bowlers for 

the gentlemen. 

What will you come as: a coal miner, 

tavern wench, house maid or 

wealthy mine owner? 

Entry will be on the Saturday of

MAITLIA POTTERS TURNS 40 IN 2017 

We are trying to contact past members 

so that we can all help celebrate this 

milestone. There were quite a number 

of members from the Howard/Burrum 

district and during that time some 

have married and many have moved

which may help us to re-unite. By the 

way, Maitlia is an aboriginal word 

that means clay, and our present home 

is at the old information centre near 

the Lamington Bridge in

District War Memorial in the 

centre of the Howard. The 

memorial was erected by the 

residents of the whole Burrum 

district, in remembrance of all 

those brave young men not only 

from Howard, Torbanlea,

Miners of Howard and the Burrum District. In the Great War 1914 to 1918 

and Toogoom, but also the 

many smaller communities like 

Duckenwillow and Struggle 

Town and many smaller 

settlements now gone and 

forgotten. 

Last year, our Fraser Coast 

Regional Council not only 

repaired the District Cenotaph 

for the second time in 3 years 

(As some degenerates firstly 

tried to remove the stone 

bayonet from the cenotaph and 

failed only damaging the statue 

of an Aussie Digger. The local 

hoodlums after the council 

repaired the cenotaph, came 

back again, this time they 

actually broke off the mussel 

and the bayonet off the statue, 

it was just a senseless 

vandalism, as what good a 

broken stone bayonet it would 

be to them?). The council again 

repaired the cenotaph also gave 

the statue of the Digger and 

Plinth a complete makeover 

repairing the damaged rifle, 

although not replacing the 

bayonet at the RSL request. The 

council removed many, many 

coats of white paint from both 

the cenotaph and plinth. The 

statue of a World War One 

Digger is now resplendent and 

back to its former glory with the 

removal of generations of paint, 

showing that the soldiers is 

made from high quality White 

Italian Marble and the Plinth 

returned back to its original 

sand stone, alas, the years of 

being covered with paint has 

damaged the plinth, but nothing 

that our council Parks 

Department could not put right. 

With the removal of the 

generations of white paint, it 

does actually reveal an 

Australian 

Soldier, not 

as generally 

believed an 

I t a l i a n 

S o l d i e r . 

With all the 

p a i n t 

r e m o v e d 

and on 

c l o s e r 

inspection, 

you can 

now see the 

Rising Sun Collar badges, also 

the Australian buttons, the 

webbing and puttees are 

basically standard British and 

Colonial Patten of Line 

Regiments, although, the back 

pack and water bottle are of a 

non standard type! But often 

soldiers were issued with items 

of kit procured locally. The Rifle 

is a British .303 Lee Enfield Mk 1 

No 3, and the uniform is 

standard AEF Infantry issue, 

with puttees and boots AB much 

the same as seen on other 

Australian Cenotaphs! One very 

unusual thing about the Howard 

Cenotaph, the soldier is wearing 

Corporal Chevrons and Band 

Harp badge, simular to the 

present day RAN Band badge! 

The Band Badge above the Cpl’s 

Strips may well be somewhat 

unique, well if no unique, then 

somewhat unusual.

Word around town is that the different coloured 

covers on the April issue of the BRN created 

some consternation. 

No it wasn't some dastardly plot to confuse our 

readers. But, be warned, it will happen again. 

The content is the same, the magazine has the 

same number of pages, the same ads and stories 

and most importantly the price is still the same - 

it's FREE. 

The BRN team is simply using up leftover paper 

from earlier printing. 

Rather than waste the coloured paper, we will be 

using the leftovers once or twice a year, 

whenever we have enough for a run. Coloured 

paper is too expensive to waste. 

But if you are really concerned about the colour 

of the front page we will gladly accept a donation 

of 4 reams of the same coloured paper. 

We are also very happy if you want to join our

Local community groups and the Fraser Coast 

Regional Council Parks and Gardens Department 

do a great job looking after our facilities. 

A quick drive down the main commercial area of 

Howard and the leafy park area of Torbanlea will 

show the extent of gardening and landscaping 

activity. 

The garden at the Railway Station, Heritage 

building and in front of the cenotaph all bear 

credit to the good green fingers of locals and 

council. 

But as our community expands, is it time to look 

for more garden based activity and consider a 

community garden? 

Community gardens have proven popular in other 

regions bringing locals together and creating a 

focal point for gardeners of all ages. 

Three community gardens exist in our region; 

Lupton Park in Maryborough, Halcro Street and 

Rainbow Gully in Hervey Bay. 

Isn’t it time Howard and District considered a 

community garden for our patch as well? 

The community garden scheme offers plots for 

interested gardeners to grow flowers, fruit and 

vegetables as well as sharing their knowledge and 

skills with others. 

It provides a wonderful source of exercise and 

grows a sense of community. 

To operate a community garden scheme requires 

organisation and suitable land. 

With sufficient interest the council can be 

approached to donate land, but the organisation 

needs to come from the community.

The Museum extends its gratitude to Russell Joynson for the hard work and expertise he 

offered in the construction of the Tunnel/Shed for Rusty No. 5, situated at the back of 

the Mine Manager’s Office and Slab Hut. He has worked locally and at mines in the 

north. As the volunteers built the Tunnel, Russell helped with the construction. We 

thank you Russell. 

Following Thecla’s resignation as Secretary, Clinton Ross has been elected to the 

position. Clinton has been involved with the Museum for many years, both before and 

after it was moved from Torbanlea to Howard. We welcome Clinton back to the 

Museum.

For reader who like their news in colour a great 

new initiative between Friends of the Burrum 

and the Howards and District Progress 

Association has made it a reality. 

Your favourite community newspaper can be

was a great community interaction between the 

two groups. “The Friends of the Burrum web

The wonderfully clear format of the new Friends

Who was Alex Gillespie? 

A par in last month’s Burrum River News posed 

the question: Who was Alex Gillespie? 

The park at Torbanlea was named after him and 

the Progress Hall has a photo and plaque in his 

memory. 

But little more it seemed was known about him. 

Thanks to a number of readers (some from as 

far away as Eumundi) we have pieced together 

part of his story. 

According to our Eumundi reader he arrived 

there in the late 1970’s and stayed for about ten 

years. 

It is uncertain where he came from but some of 

our readers believe he had been a Colonel in the 

British Army. 

Apparently Alex was fond of a drop and could 

be found at his favourite spot at Joes Watering 

Hole and later the Miners Arms in Torbanlea. 

He was a great favourite with Torbanlea school 

children displaying his comprehensive 

matchbox/book collection. 

In later years he raised money for the Torbanlea 

Hall and kept it clean and in repair. 

The Progress Association will mount a plaque to 

him in the park bearing his name. 

Thank you to all our readers who responded and 

have allowed us to answer the question: Who 

was Alex Gillespie? 

And from a reader....... 

I had the honour of meeting Alex only the once 

at the Torbanlea Hall when the Buffalo Lodge 

was meeting there - Lodge No. 480. He was 

standing on the front steps and we started 

talking. He was from the Pommie Lodge (GLE 

where we are ROAB) and he told me about 

some of the history of Torbanlea. I think he was 

an Ex serviceman too. He was a thorough 

gentleman.

Local Artists Display their 

Creativity 

Howard and District Creative Arts 

Group members have been busy 

putting the finishing touches to 

works for a public display in 

Maryborough. 

Gatekers ArtsSpace will host a 

three week long exhibition of local 

art under the banner “Burrum 

Creations”. 

Fifteen artists will be exhibited 

including Cheryl Gray-Kneebone, 

Jim and Julie Wight, Margaret 

Ewers and Sheryl Worthington. 

A variety of mediums will be on 

display including paintings, 

pottery, porcelain painting and 

paper tolle. 

The official opening is Friday 6 th 

May and the exhibition continues 

until 29 th May.

In all probability, the statue on the Howard Cenotaph 

is of an Australian Soldiers of 1914-18, not as 

‘rumour control’, stated an Italian Soldier made to 

look like an Aussie Digger! No matter, our Burrum 

District Cenotaph located in Howard is conspicuous 

for the very high quality Italian Marble and 

craftsmanship, and thanks to the our council Parks & 

Gardens Dept, is now splendidly restored back to its 

former glory, alas, less the bayonet! 

It is believed that the location of the cenotaph was 

by mutual consent, and not just the Returned Sailors 

and Soldiers League but a community decision. That 

the district cenotaph was to be strategically placed 

on the crossroads in Howard, were the Bruce 

Highway made an abrupt left turn on the only road 

travailing from Brisbane to all point north of 

Maryborough, what was then the most prominent 

location in the district for a lasting memorial, for all 

those of Burrum District who gave their lives in the 

Great War to end All Wars. The names on the 

cenotaph are an ever lasting tribute that is proudly 

displayed covering all sides of the memorial. The 

names of all those who died while serving in the 

Second World War and Korean War have been 

added. Thankfully no one from the Burrum District 

has paid the Supreme Sacrifice to date since then, 

while serving in the many of the active deployments 

that the Australian Defence Forces have participated 

in the world’s trouble spots, let us pray it stays that 

way this ANZAC Day.

COALFEST STREET PARADE 

Saturday 16 th July 

Preparations are well advanced in procuring 

entrants for the Street Parade. We will have the 

penny farthings again this year as well as 

vintage Motor Cars and more modern ones. I 

am trying to arrange for the Famous 

Maryborough GNAT CARS to make an 

appearance. 

The Gympie Light Horse Group will again 

entertain us, and the Marching Bands will be 

here as well. We will see some older horse 

drawn vehicles and equipment. The McDonald 

family of Bougainvillia Dell will be bringing a 

beautifully restored sulky and perhaps some 

other gear. 

It is going to be an interesting parade and we 

are looking for entries in the walking scarecrow 

section. Get together with some of your mates 

and make up some scarecrows or clowns to 

walk in the parade. The idea is to have some 

fun in the old Town. You can let off a bit of 

steam and have fun at the same time.

Hello to everyone, when is autumn 

going to arrive? Summer seems to be 

hanging on this year, it would be 

nice to have a little cooler weather 

for a change, but then I guess we 

will be complaining it`s too cold. 

Human nature-we are never satisfied 

are we? We will be starting to get 

our winter clothes out very soon, 

and a lot of our real summer things 

put away. 

A big thanks to our council. I rang 

our local Councillor James Hanson 

about a dangerous grate outside our 

shop and it was fixed within two 

days. Thanks James. Too often all we 

hear about our Council are 

complaints but nothing about the 

good things.

I’ve entered my little cactus/succulent garden in 

the Garden Competition, just for fun! It is at the 

end of a patio, and doesn’t get direct sun, so it is a 

bit of an experiment as I think they do a lot better 

in full sun. I read up about them today and they do 

appreciate some water, but not so much that they 

rot in the pot or garden. And there is a fertilizer to 

suit them. “Thrive Concentrate Cacti & Succulent 

Plant Food. A fast acting, complete, liquid fertiliser 

ideal for feeding a wide range of cacti and 

succulents. Feeds through both the foliage and the 

roots. Specially formulated blend of nitrogen and 

potassium for healthy succulent foliage and 

beautiful flowers. 

Yates say Winter is rose planting season. Winter 

is rose time. This seems an odd concept, with 

most roses being bare of both leaves and flowers 

throughout the cool months. But it's an apt term 

because much of the seasonal rose activity, 

especially pruning and planting, takes place in 

winter. 

I think I mentioned once, that in England, at one of 

the large supermarkets, there were bags of used 

coffee grounds-for the taking “for compost for 

your garden”. If you want to try the following hint, 

you could ask one of the coffee shops to save 

them for you, or save your own if you don’t use 

Instant all the time? Coffee and banana peel are 

great for the compost pile, as they break down to 

add nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and 

phosphorus to the soil, and so improving soil 

quality. But you can also put them straight into the 

planting hole, and better still, put the composted 

stuff around them to fill.

Dear Readers - This year is flying!! The holidays were a 

welcome break with all the wonderful memories still 

fresh in our minds. There is also another special day in 

May which all of us remember with love and 

affection!! Mothers' Day!! QCWA will be 

remembering this day by holding a special Mother's 

Day Tombola. 

Mother's Day Tombola - QCWA will again be holding 

their annual Mother's Day Tombola in the CWA Hall, 

Steley Street. The date is Saturday 7 th May. Time 

1:00pm. Free Admission with Free afternoon tea. 

Great prizes, including lucky door and raffles. This is a 

great afternoon for all the family! ! Don't miss this 

one!! 

A sausage sizzle will also be running outside the Hall 

from 11.30am. Cold drinks will be available. 

Burrum Coalfest Princess Competition - This 

competition will again be held by QCWA Howard 

Branch. It is open to all young ladies between the ages 

of 14 - 18years. All applicants will need to have a 

sponsor. The entry fee is $10.00, payable by the 

sponsor. If you meet this criteria and would like to 

enter, entry forms are available from the president, 

Judy Sheean (phone 41294724). All entries need to be 

mailed to QCWA Howard, P.O. Box 181 Howard 4659 

no later than 24 th June 2016. No late entries will be 

accepted. The Burrum Coalfest is a yearly event held 

in Howard on the 3 rd weekend in July. This year it falls 

on the 16 th and 17 th July. 

Cuppa for Cancer fundraiser - The amount raised was 

$1463.00 What an incredible amount for the Howard 

district. WELL DONE!! 

Free Morning Teas - These are held on the 3 rd 

Wednesday of each month. Next on will be 

Wednesday 18 th May. Time 10:00am in the CWA Hall. 

There is always a delicious array of sandwiches, cakes 

etc provided. Elizabeth is the convenor with CWA 

members helping. There is always a poem or two as 

well as a sing-a-long with the Country Songbirds. For

New Members - Our next meeting will be held on 

Wednesday 4 th May at 9:00am in the CWA Hall. If you

A talented stay-at-home mother wrote a delightful essay in which she vividly describes (without 

complaining) the frustrations, sacrifices, and loneliness that accompany her chosen lifestyle. It’s not 

glamorous to deal with a fussy 18-month-old who is teething, to settle quarrels between an irrational 

3-year-old and a pushy 5-year-old, and to listen to the incessant chatter of small children. Yet she 

concludes that her role is indispensable for the total well-being of her children. How true! 

The importance of a godly mother’s role in the life of a child cannot be overemphasized. Think of 

Timothy, for example, the young man the apostle Paul considered his spiritual son and a valuable 

partner in ministry. In his second letter to him, Paul recalled how Timothy had been influenced by “the 

genuine faith” of his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). God used two 

generations of loving mothers to prepare Timothy for the crucial work he would have in spreading the 

gospel and establishing congregations of believers in Christ. 

Let’s praise the Lord for mothers who not only care for their children physically but also nurture them 

spiritually. Mothers like that are indispensable!

In the last month the Howard/Torbanlea RFS fire 

vehicles have attended 1 Fire Call and assisted a 

local resident with 1 Permit Burn. We welcome 

two new members, Mark Carson (Splinter) and 

Dieter Ryan. On a sad note we announce the 

passing of Fred Ferguson who will always be 

remembered for his dedication to the service 

and his larger than life humour and friendship. 

RIP Fred. 

Word is getting out in regards to the assistance 

our Fire Brigade has provided and can provide in 

the following areas, Property Hazard Mitigation 

Audits, assistance in Hazard Reduction Burns 

and Home Safety Audits. One thing to remember 

is that if our Brigade Members have visited your 

property we will have a greater understanding 

of your house location on your property, land 

layout, water sources that may be utilised at 

times of fire activity, vehicle access capability, 

fence line locations and gate access points. 

Adhere to emergency services advice when 

there is a fire in the local area, by utilising local 

radio stations. If a power failure occurs, 

batteries in your portable radio are essential as 

radio information may provide valuable 

information and safety directions. Protecting 

lives is your number one priority in all 

emergencies, evacuate in the early stages of any 

emergency situation (fire, floods, cyclones etc). 

Fires stacks larger than 2 meters x 2 meters, in 

any one direction, are required to obtain a Fire 

Permit from the Fire Warden on 4129 4777 

please do not hesitate to call and someone will 

get back to you as soon as possible. If you do 

decide to light a fire less than 2 meters x 2 

meters you are responsible for ensuring the fire 

remains contained until it is completely out. 

The holder of a Fire Permit is responsible for 

monitoring their fire and is required to present 

the Fire Permit if authorities request. Please 

remember a Fire Permit is a Legal Document 

that needs to be adhered to and all information 

on the Fire Permit needs to be followed and 

undertaken before the fire is lit, during the fire 

and after the fire is completed. Please call “000” 

at the early stages if a controlled Fire Permit 

burn becomes out of control. 

Once again I urge all members of the public to 

be vigilant, document and report any suspicious 

behavior from individuals or groups that may 

have been involved in incidents at the time of 

any emergency situation. 

We urge new members to come down to the 

RFS Station located on Steley Street, Howard. 

We commence training on Wednesday nights at 

6.30pm. Every 3 rd Wednesday of the month we 

hold a Monthly General Meeting at 7.00pm.

• I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way. 

• The truck was all over the road so I had to swerve several times before I hit him. 

• I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way. 

• I had been driving for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident. 

• I was upside down in a ditch where I was discovered by a herd of stray cows. 

• An invisible car came out of nowhere and vanished. 

• The pedestrian had no idea which way to run so I ran over him. 

• I saw a slow moving, sad faced old gentleman as he bounced off the roof of my car. 

• To avoid hitting the car in front I struck a pedestrian. I was sure the old fellow would never 

make it to the other side o f the road when I struck him. 

• The accident was caused by me waving to the man I hit last week. 

• I knocked over a man. He admitted it was his fault as he had been knocked over before. 

• The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy with a small car and a big mouth.

If you use the Internet & E-Mail the chances are 

extremely high that your computer WILL be 

exposed to a virus. Are you protected or will you 

risk losing important data & possibly having 

personal info and Banking details stolen. There 

are a number of methods to fully protect your 

computer from the millions of viruses that are 

presently out there. Most Viruses, Trojans & 

Spyware can easily be removed. Some of these 

more recent Gremlins can be extremely difficult 

to remove. These include the more nasty 

Rootkits and keyloggers. Some are extremely 

clever in the way they try and trick a user into 

clicking on a page by claiming you have viruses,

Internet Tip : If an unexpected window pops up while 

web browsing and the only option is OK, you can 

always close this window by using Alt F4. Hold your 

Alt key in then press F4. This will close the active 

window.

Warning about Bogus Callers 

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to 

be from Microsoft or maybe they will say from 

the Windows support centre. They are bogus 

and just trying to trick you into allowing them 

access to your computer. They will tell you, you 

have viruses on your computer. They will get 

you to look at folders on your computer and tell 

you there are a lot of problems there. Hang up 

on them and don’t do anything they suggest.
