4 Reflections on the Year
Graduation time. The caps. The gowns. The chords. A final
goodbye to the life all seniors have known for the past thirteen
years. However, with this heartwarming chapter coming to a
close, many new doors eagerly await the graduating class of
2016. Before those caps get thrown into the air, first reflect on
the impact the senior class has left on Argyle High School like
multiple state championships, a new attendance policy, and
more. Let’s look at the legacy 2016 will leave behind.
6 Highlight Stories of 2016
Over the course of the 2015-16 school year, The Talon News
has covered top events ranging from new Chromebooks to the
new winter formal. However, with the school year coming to an
end, it is time to reminisce on the major events that define every
student’s high school career.
9 Top 10, Perfect attendance
In one word, the top ten students describe their desire to succeed
in high school like determination, opportunity, and more.
The top ten are as follows (in no particular order): Kaylie King,
Carleigh Klusman, Sarah Llewellyn, Shashwat Tripathi, Brandon
Couch, Ashley Ridenour, Claire DeSpain, Lillian Carter, Travis
Koczo, Tanner Boyzuick. Other Eagles who have the admirable
quality of perfect attendance during the 2015-16 school year,
especially seniors Breana Dewoody and Travis Koczo.
11 College Bound
Through different state borders, students are parting ways in all
different directions across America. The furthest of these being
Drew Estrada, who will be attending Dartmouth College in New
Hampshire, 1,827 miles away from home. Texas Tech University
will be taking on the most amount of Argyle students with 18
attending. However, the graduating class will always hold Argyle
High School close to their hearts.
15 Senior Plans
Seniors get serious about their college and future plans.
However, graduation is about having fun too, and no senior
wants to forget his or her senior crush. Whether it’s Lynda
Devine, Asa Burk, or “my car,” the seniors will always remember
their high school sweethearts.
22 Senior look-a-likes
One highlight of senior year is choosing the senior look-a-likes.
This year students found several fantastic similarities between
students and celebrities like Preston List and Tom Cruise, Ali
Childress and Angelina Jolie, and several other matches.
REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR
Micki Hirschhorn
Senior Writing Editor
As the 2015-16 year begins
to wrap up, the seniors
are taking a step back to
reflect on all of the successes
they’ve had, the friendships
they’ve made, and the
memories they’ve gathered
along the way.
The school district
provided Chromebooks
(also known as chromies),
brand new Snapchat filters
(especially popular—the
dog effect), new additions
to the school, new traditions
started, a brand new
broadcast program, a new
principal, and new legacies
being left behind.
Principal James Hill,
the newest prominent
addition, to the Argyle
family, brought a few new
traditions to Argyle: the
senior leadership committee
and the unforgettable
Lip Dub.
A new structural addition
to the school included
the Indoor Activity Center,
which officially opened for
the 2015-16 school year
and was incredibly helpful
for the baseball and softball
teams, conveniently placed
right next to their new
fields, now known as Eagle
Stadium.
Another addition to
the school was the Alex
Betzhold Memorial outdoor
basketball courts
placed next to the tennis
courts, which also had
additional courts added for
this year. And, a car was
donated to be given away
at the end of the year to a
student who has perfect
attendance.
Along with the many
“firsts” Mr. Hill also allowed
this school year
was No Shave November.
During this month the boys
could purchase an arm
bracelet for $10 and they
were allowed to grow out
their facial hair and not be
penalized for not shaving.
All funds benefitted Hunter
Oney, an argyle student
suffering from cancer. The
halls were filled with boys
and their unique beards.
The students got a kick
out of it and senior Tanner
Boyzuick highly enjoyed
the opportunity to embrace
his facial hair.
“It finally felt like
I didn’t go to a private
school. Then reality set in
in the spring and my face
hurts from shaving every
day again,” Boyzuick said.
“It finally felt like
I didn’t go to a private
school. Then reality set in
in the spring and my face
hurts from shaving every
day again,” Boyzuick said.
The year was full of new
adventures and experiences
for all, and with over
eighteen state titles claimed
by the class of 2016, a backto-back
state championship
has also been earned by a
few key sports.
Girls’ basketball
claimed their back-to-back
state title with seniors Olivia
Gray and Kaylie King
leading the team to victory
in San Antonio again this
year. The girls finished off
the season with an overall
record of 35-1. The Eagles
are leaving their legacy of
success for the next class.
Gray believes that all
the hard work put into
gaining the state title again
was very rewarding.
“Winning a state championship
never gets old,”
Gray said. “There’s no other
feeling like it.”
The boys golf team
competed and won their
first state championship
last year. This year they
had seniors Tommy
Parker, Will Blake,
and Alex Isakson
return to lead them
to their most recent state
title. The boys have been
working for this returning
victory since last season
Class of 2016
and were able to end their
high school golf career
with not one, but two state
titles.
The class of 2016 is also
notorious for being
‘historical’ or
even ‘legendary’
as some
of the members
of the class
have said.
The senior
class made numerous
state appearances
and made school history
by carrying sports
to lengths they had never
before reached.
Football continued the
winning tradition with an
appearance at state, hosted
at NRG stadium in Houston,
where the Eagles fell
short to the Waco La Vega
pirates. Yet, the football
team was left with an incredible
Argyle legacy from
seniors JC Chalk, Spencer
Cullen, Drew Estrada, Ty
Smith, David Bearden,
Hudson Speed, Holden
Bell, Chad Book, Caleb
Holt, Gage McCook, Shane
McKinney, Jacob Forrer,
Taylor Sweatt, Dakota
Carpenter, Colton Liggett,
Brady Llewellyn, Scott
Smith, Matt Rowe, Adam
Dyer, Blake Llewellyn, Jon
Fullingim, and Hunter
Blackwell.
Senior captain, a key
part of the team believes
that “winning [and getting
to] state is worth every second
of the countless hours
of practice it takes to get
there,” he said.
Senior Ty Smith will
never forget the experience.
“It’s an indescribable
experience that I am so
incredibly happy that I was
apart of,” Smith said.
Senior Hudson Speed,
however, thinks that building
a brotherhood was the
most significant part of
winning the state title.
“I played with most of
those guys since I was in
third grade and to go 16-0
was the ultimate feeling,” he
said.
Volleyball was one of
the ‘history makers’ this
year, winning the school’s
first ever 4A state championship.
Seniors Eighmy
Dobbins, Emma Malone,
Strealy Sizelove, Alexa Bass
and Melanie Carlisle led the
team to victory.
“We worked hard every
day and we wanted to make
the dream of being state
champions finally come
true,” Dobbins said.
EAGLES WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT LONE STAR CUP
Faith Stapleton
Reporter
The Eagles have taken
home another Lone Star Cup.
This is their fourth win in a row
and sixth overall victory. The
Lone Star Cup is awarded to six
high schools in Texas, one from
every UIL classification(1A, 2A,
3A, 4A, 5A, 6A), each having
the best academic, fine arts,
and athletic programs in their
division.
Along with winning The
Lone Star Cup, the Eagles set
a new record with their win
of an astounding 127 points.
They received these points from
winning state titles in academics,
girls’ basketball, boys’ golf,
wrestling, and marching band.
Also, they were awarded points
for being state finalists in volleyball
and football, with extra
points from team tennis, boys
basketball, and boys
and girls soccer.
“The winning
schools and
communities
should be
proud of this
incredible
achievement,”
UIL Executive
Director Dr.
Charles Breithaupt
said.
Now that
Argyle has won
the 2015 Lone
Star Cup, they
are preparing
to win a seventh.
Everyone
is excited
to see what the Eagles have to
give this year.
“I think no matter
what, our kids are
going to perform
well,” Principal
James Hill said.
The Lone
Star Cup was
presented to
Superintendent
Dr. Telena Wright
by UIL Director of
Music, Dr. Brad
Kent during
halftime of the
varsity football
game, on
Friday, Sept. 25.
It shows all
the success
the Eagles
have had this
past year.
“I think [The Lone Star
Cup] gives Argyle a legacy,” Dr.
Wright said. “[The Lone Star
Cup] gives Argyle’s community
a sense of accomplishment and
pride in what the young people
in Argyle are doing in the different
areas.”
The school received a
trophy and $1,000 scholarship
for their accomplishments. Dr.
Wright is extremely proud of
the high school’s achievements.
“Argyle High School has
dedicated and talented students,
supportive parents, supportive
school board, and very committed
and dedicated staff working
very hard with the students,” Dr.
Wright said. “I am very honored
to be out here representing
Argyle.”
SENIORS DRIVE THROUGH YEAR WITH PERFECT ATTENDANCE
Brayden Ratcliff
Multimedia Editor
Juggling personal activities,
staying studious at home, and
showing up to school daily are
routines that students are accustomed
to. For seniors, this task
becomes more demanding. Motivation
for many upperclassman
often runs low. Every once in a
while, however, some accomplish
a rare feat: seniors Travis Koczo
and Breanna Dewoody will finish
with perfect attendance since
kindergarten.
“I think it has made me
more organized and has made my
grades way better than if I didn’t
come to school,” Dewoody said.
Seventeen other students also
will graduate with perfect attendance
their senior year.
In order to encourage all high
school students to strive for perfect
attendance, the administration
found ways to reward those
who have flawless records.
“We strive to have every
student in every class everyday,”
assistant principal John King said.
“To help that, we have put in some
incentives: we did exam exemptions
and we are giving away a car
this year.”
Students were rewarded with
tickets each grading period they
had perfect attendance, and could
also earn bonus tickets for not
missing an entire semester and
being present the full school year.
The tickets will be drawn at the
Perfect attendance seniors celebrate with this year's jeep giveaway. In alphabetical
order, the students in the drawing for the car are Austin Anderson, Connor Arnold,
Lillian Carter, Benjamin Chowning, Spencer Cullen, Julio Gonzalez, Raquel Gonzalez,
Joshua Hankins, Kieran Hanlon, Henry Jefferies, Laura Lotze, Zachary McKellar, Zane
Mohar, Rafael Pacheco, Arica Styron, Sydney Ward, and Grant Weitzer. (Naomi Brooks/
will win a 2015 Jeep Patriot donated
by Waxahachie Autoplex.
“We are just looking for
ways to improve our attendance
because we believe the education
system works best when students
are here,” King said. “Everything
we do is to help our students in
life."
Success is not a word taken
lightly at Argyle. The type of activity
does not matter; if a student is
participating, they are striving for
excellence.
For the top ten, this credo is
followed to the fullest. Whether it
is being a pit legend in band, serving
as a ace in tennis, performing
as a king of basketball, a star
REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR
(Cont. from page 4)
The cheerleading squad
also made history this year
as well. It was the first year
that UIL allowed cheerleading
squads to compete for
a chance to win a state title.
In early January, they spent
a 16 hour day in Arlington
where they competed
against 75 other schools
and placed 8th in the
nation at the first ever UIL
cheerleading competition.
Seniors Heather Lindemann,
Micki Hirschhorn,
and Hayley Little competed
as part of the historic UIL
team.
In men’s track several
made it to the state meet on
May 13-14, which included
senior Preston List who
placed second in the 110M
hurdles at the region meet
in Commerce. Other qualifiers
to the state meet were
Dane Ledford in long jump
and Jake Van Patten in pole
vault.
Marching Band was led
by Drum majors Breanna
Dewoody, Sarah Llewellyn,
and Haley Emerson. Along
with the following senior
leaders: Zach Schermerhorn
(trumpet section leader),
Claire DeSpain (Battery
section leader), Zach
McKellar (Clarinet section
leader), Ashley Ridenour
(Pit section leader), and
Emily Elsom (Euphonium/
tuba section leader).
The band had a successful
year and are already
beginning preparions for
another state appearance
looking toward 2016-17.
This year’s band seniors
were a part of the 2012 and
2014 state championships
and will be wearing two
gold state medals at graduation.
Drumline continued
their success in percussion
throughout the year, but
also attended a convention
in San Antonio where Riley
Barnes and Claire DeSpain
placed first and second in
the PASIC national competition.
Also, part of the marching
band, this year’s color
guard, was also very
successful with help from
the three seniors—Alyssa
Woolums, Savannah
Runyon, and Skylar Yeargan.
They placed first at
the Sound of Springtown
Competition, placed third
at NTCA Saginaw High
School Winter Guard
Contest and claimed
another first place at the
Scholastic A Round 3
Champions at NTCA
Championships.
One act play had a very
rewarding season as well.
Brad Sullivan was the lone
senior who helped lead this
year’s play, Paragon Springs.
This organization won a
multitude of awards this
season and was very successful
in all they did.
UIL Academics were
distcit and regional champions
for and will advance
students for 21 spots at the
state championship meet
in Austin, Texas. Teams
competing include: Number
Sentence, Calculator,
Science, Math, Computer
Science, Literary Criticism
teams and an editorial
writer. All the teams will be
advancing to state late May
where they will be attempting
to hold on to their state
winning streak, having
claimed the title the last 8
years.
Speaking of back-toback
titles, there is also
Chase Roth who took home
a state championship in
wrestling for the last four
years.
Boys Basketball blew
through district with a
record of 10-0. They fell
short during playoffs but
seniors Kade Randall, JC
Chalk, and Mark Pfohl lead
the team with a great season
coached by returning
basketball Coach Perkins.
Returning starter senior
Lucas Shigley looks back
on his time spent on argyle
courts as his time on the
courts have closed.
“It was awesome to be
a part of a team that got
along so well on and off
the court, and was able to
truly play as one team come
game time. It was a completely
different atmosphere
than last season, and it was
all because of our team’s
chemistry,” Shigley said.
Class of 2016
made school history by
making it to the state
championship tournament,
finishing with silver. The
boys have accomplished so
much this season and were
rewarded with the opportunity
to represent this high
school by making a state
appearance. This state appearing
team was assisted
by the help of seniors Caleb
Holt, Chad Book, Drew
Estrada, Jon Fullingim,
Holden Bell, Jensen Mark,
Zane Mohar, Rafael Pacheco,
and Carter Wilson.
“Even before the season
started we were confident
this would be the team to
make it to the state tournament
and we proved that,”
Book said. “This team is a
team I will remember for
the rest of my life and even
though it didn’t end like we
hoped it would have we had
a very successful season.”
Girls’ soccer, like the
boys, made more school
history by making it to
playoffs. They lost to the
team that ended up winning
the whole state tournament.
Senior Makenna
White was the only senior
on the team this year.
“I didn’t think I was
even going to be able to
finish the season because
I got sick, but I’m glad I
recovered and got to finish
the season making school
history,” White said.
The boys’ baseball team
made their state appearance
in Austin last June,
worthy of the drive considering
they brought home
the gold. The seniors on
last year, and this year’s,
team were Spencer Cullen,
Ryland King, Tanner
Boyzuick, Henry Jefferies,
Mark Pfohl, and new team
member Brett Lambert.
The boys worked very hard
to win the championship
last year and they have high
hopes to make it again this
year. Cullen believes that
giving it their all will lead
them to the championship.
Beyond all the extra
curricular, seniors battled
through a semester of
poems and the creation of
the English “music video”
along with sitting in coach
Beene’s highly entertaining
personality, as well as
learning how to keep up
with this year’s election in
government class, which
was no small feat for this
historic election year led by
the infamous ‘you’re fired’
Republican Donald Trump
and Democratic candidates
Hilary Clinton and Bernie
Sanders.
“There was one time in
coach Beene’s class where a
student came in to ask him
a question and right before
the student left, coach
Beene said ‘Today I ate a
plate of bacon bits with
chocolate chips. I wanted
to tell you but I wasn’t sure
how’. It was so awkward,
but hilarious.” Senior Blair
Bowman said.
“It finally felt like
I didn’t go to a private
school. Then reality set in
in the spring and my face
hurts from shaving every
day again,” Boyzuick said.
Kenzie Cvar was the
class of 2016’s class president
two years in a row.
Cvar was able to not only
represent the class wonderfully,
but she also organized
the “best prom ever” last
year. She has been a major
asset to the class the last
two years and ending our
time at Argyle with her as
the class’s representative
only seemed fitting.
“It’s been a crazy ride,
between getting a new
principal and every event
being our ‘lasts.’ Our grade
has set the bar in everything
we do. As I said before
we got a new principal,
and he couldn’t have been
more suitable for Argyle.
Not only has he kept the
tradition and name of
Argyle strong, he’s also
brought some new traditions
to Argyle,” Cvar said.
“Like the lip-dup, it was SO
fun and such a great way
that everyone got involved.
The best part about this
year and about our grade, is
the friendly, hard-working
and fun reputation that we
have built for ourselves.
The class of 2016 is more
than outstanding, and I
have been so honored to
represent it.”
More Than a Crown: Real Meaning of being Nominated
Micki Hirschhorn
Senior Writing Editor
This year’s Homecoming
King and Queen were selected by
their peers, yet the final vote was
by the whole school. The big reveal
of the title of the 2015 Homecoming
King and Queen was
announced amidst thunderstorms
and umbrellas during half-time of
the football game vs Dallas Carter
on Oct. 23.
There were many mixed emotions
when it came to what being
nominated really meant.
“Being nominated is such an
honor because it shows me that
people actually know who I am,”
Kennedy Cullum said. “It makes
me feel important and noticed.”
The preparation that goes
into the week of homecoming
is far beyond what one would
expect. Guys have to dig up suits
while girls are on the hunt to find
the perfect dress to wear.
“I went dress shopping with
my sister who came down from
Students received Chromebooks
early this year to promote
technology in the learning environment.
Many students believed that
the Chromebooks were unnecessary,
and wanted to be able to use
their own technology in school,
but the decision was made that
Chromebooks would be the only
computers to be used in class.
Austin to share
this special
moment with
me,” Ari Styron
said.
To Styron,
being nominated
had a
profound effect
on her.
“I feel very
appreciative
and thankful
for the fact
that my class
thought of me when asked who
they wanted as their homecoming
queen,” Styron said.
Claire Despain, on the other
hand, sheds a light joke as she
addressed being a prospective
Queen.
“It means a lot to me to be
nominated because I’m excited to
represent the school,” she said.
Sarah Lewellyn just wanted to
be remembered for her community
service and activities.
“I want people to vote for me
Chromebooks, however,
have been a great addition to the
classroom.
Not only do they provide
every student with the means to
work more efficiently on essays
and projects, but they also open
more opportunities for higher
level learning and the use of
technology in and out of class.
Not only that, it gives students the
necessary skills to work on multiple
platforms, which can only
enhance their career skills.
Chromebooks
also keep
students on an
equal playing
field for assignments.
Since
every student
is required to
use a Chromebook,
they are
each given the
same software
and programs
to complete
because I’m not the stereotypical
girl that usually wins homecoming
queen,” Lewellyn said. “I represent
many organizations in school.”
Tanner Boyzuick’s prepartion
had to do with the mental process.
“I am preparing by figuring
out the best way to deal with
having to wear a suit to a football
game,” Boyzuick said. “Not used
to that.”
Boyzuick personally doesn’t
mind seeing someone else receive
the title of King.
“I want Pratyush to win,” he
assignments. If all students are
given equal technology, then there
is no reason for a student to not
produce work that can be held
at equal standards to any other
classmate. Also, the Chromebooks
keep inappropriate or distracting
outside entities from entering
the learning environment. This
will help keep students focused
on what they are supposed to be
doing when working on technology-based
assignments.
Many people say that the
Chromebooks are unnecessary
for students due to the lack of
technology use in class, but this
is completely false. Teachers are
now required to incorporate
more technology in their weekly
lesson plans. In addition, students
are required to write at least two
papers every year in their English
or history class, along with many
projects, that must include presentations
or spreadsheets.
Students also complained that the
Chromebooks aren’t equipped
said. “He’s awesome and deserves
the recognition.”
Students have been able to
watch older classes walk across
the field in anticipation of being
crowned King and Queen.
“I really looked up to those
girls, because they are nominated
by their class and voted upon by
the whole school,” class president
Kenzie Cvar said. “It’s really neat
to see who people look up to, and
to be considered a role model is
an honor, but also makes me feel
super special and just thankful.”
with the right programs to allow
them to complete their work most
efficiently. However, Google drive
is one of the most efficient ways
to collect and store assignments.
Google also contains a program
for slideshows, word documents,
and spread sheets, along with a
“share” feature, where students can
allow other students and teachers
to view and edit their assignments.
Google Classroom is also another
great tool teachers can use to
collect and assign work. These
features give students everything
they need to complete their work.
The Chromebooks have been
a great addition to the school.
They allow students to work
effectively alone or with others.
Not only do they give students
an opportunity to have access to
technology 24/7, but they also
help teachers create a more technologically
advanced learning environment.
Students should take
advantage of this new addition to
the classroom.
