BUYING A CARAVAN OR RECREATION VEHICLE TYPE? ...Things to Consider when Buying a <strong>Caravan</strong> or Other Type of Recreational Vehicle When you’re looking at all the products from which you can choose there are a few things you should consider before you buy to ensure the vehicle is the one that best suits your lifestyle and budget. Lifestyle How do you plan to use your <strong>Caravan</strong> and how many people will need to be accommodated? Most importantly, what are you prepared to spend and don’t forget to take into account add-ons and extras which may be required or desired. Requirements Check if your current vehicle has the towing capacity needed and it is good to have an idea of what your kitchen and bathroom requirements will be. Also consider whether you will be able to set up your caravan with ease and whether it is simple to position and level. Designs Consider the centre of gravity and wind resistance when towing, and easy storage when not in use. The Manufacturer Ensure the product meets the relevant Australian Design Rules and Standards. This will ensure you don’t have any problems registering your caravan or when lodging an insurance claim in the event of an incident or accident. Chassis & Suspension The quality of the chassis and suspension in both materials and construction, are critical to the longevity of your vehicle. Doors & Other Openings Seals in good condition will help prevent water and dust from entering your unit and will save you a lot of time cleaning — especially with camper trailers. Storage It is worth ensuring you are able to secure all your belongings in your caravan or RV when you are on the road to prevent damage. Optional Add-ons It is important to keep track of the extra weight of all of the add-ons as this can affect longevity, safety and legality. Add-ons can include, but are not limited to: stone guards to protect your caravan from damage from rocks and stones being flicked up when driving; tool boxes (ensure not to exceed manufacturers weight specifications or overall legal length); boat/roof/bike racks; storage boxes and solar panels. Drivers’ Licences & Towing Courses Depending on the weight and size of your motorhome you may be required to obtain either a light rigid or medium rigid drivers licence. You are not required to hold a special drivers licence to tow camper trailers, tent trailers or caravans however you may find participating in a towing course to be a valuable experience.
