WORLD IMPACT
LITERATURE AND SOCIETY
Literature is the mirror of society, its growth is closely related to the
growth of human civilization. Every time a book is opened, new insights
of sociological development are reflected within its pages. Due to the
major impact literature has on the development of society, the content
of this magazine is focused on the influence of literature in society as a
way to portrait every-day life.
Since literature gives in detail human experiences, the content of
this magazine emphasizes literature and its manifestations in movies,
music and art. Then, the magazine gives insights of human behaviors in
education and culture. Also, the authors speak of protecting life in all its
forms and expressions. Nevertheless, the magazine motivates people to
keep a balance between responsibilities and entertainment, so that,
beauty and health sections are included to raise awareness about the
importance of having a healthy life. Finally, current social events,
schedules, and discounts are promoted through the entertainment and
art section.
Why should you be
reading a
literature-education
magazine?
Literature has the potential power
to build up society. The different
narratives in this magazine are meant
to examine our lives in order to give
them a deeper meaning. One of the
magazine?s main qualities is that it is
open to the study and interpretation
of humanities and social sciences
through literature. It allows the reader
to have a deeper understanding of
Life in society
The link of the video below focus on the potential
influence literature has on society. The objective of the
video is to allow the reader to interpret from its own
background, the meaningful role of literature in human's
daily life. This interpretation is possible through series of
pictures and videos of the elements that shape society.
The setting of the video is Heredia downtown and for
instance Universidad Nacional. The combination of
element such as literature, education, nature, traffic,
parks, and social problems is focused on raising
awareness about the principles of life in society.
DARETOWRITE
Literature is a term referred to written material. The
word ?literature? comes from the Latin, in which
?litteratura? means ?writing formed with letters? and
includes short stories and poetry. Even though literature
can be written or read, in this section you are going to be
motivated to write rather than read since it is considered to
be more difficult among the two, however, not impossible
and you can do it for sure.
Narrative
How many times have you wondered what to write
something for? The answer is as simple as ?because every
person have something valuable to say.? There is diversity
in our society that allow each person to look at events,
objects and situations in different perspectives because of
their backgrounds and this, of course, enrich literature. In
case you do not want to publish anything, it does not mean
that you cannot write. It has been proven that writing a
diary or even short stories help you to keep in good health
plus other advantages in your life as removing stress,
enhancing creativity, keeping the mind active, and
developing writing, analytical and communicative skills. Do
you see? Why not to give writing a try? Maybe you can
start writing a short story and then, move on to poetry. Of
course that is possible! Why not? Actually, you will find
both in this section.
A short story is, according to the Encyclopedia
Britannica, ?a brief fictional prose narrative that is
shorter than a novel and that usually deals with only a
few characters.? The most important elements you
might found in a short story, beside few characters, are:
the setting, which is the place where the events happen;
the theme, what is the story about; the plot, the series
of events that take place in the story; and, finally, a
conflict and its solution.
Next page, you are going to find a short story
written by a student that had never written
one before. She tried since she had no
other option, but at the end she enjoyed
it so much that decided to continue
writing for herself. This proves that if
she could write, you can too.
Enjoy the reading!
THE GUARDIAN
BY MARIA CELESTE JIMENEZ
She was in need of a guardian; a careful, cautious and protective vigilant. However, she could
not choose, but accept the designated one and the place that was offered to her. She should
fully trust in him and deposit her absolute confidence. No chance to be disappointed was
convenient. She had no choice.
Little fountains moistened the place, from which she nourished and grew stronger and stronger,
while maintaining in stillness, motionless, silent, as if trying to blend in and go unnoticed. That
was her reality, knew no other. She just let to be carried away by time, every second, every
minute, every hour and even more every day. It was a matter of time. She had no plan, only
remained discreet.
That dark place was her all, she never left it, at least, should not for
now, it was very dangerous and she was not ready. She must stay
there, waiting for a signal. In the meantime, she remained alert to
every nearby movement, every sound and every stream, confident
that her guardian angel was still there.
She never got tired of hearing the beating of a drum produced by
her guardian; that would be a sign that he was still there, in vigil.
She enjoyed it so much that she soon learned to give drumbeats,
but so soft that they were not easily noticeable. In that way, she
kept her anonymity.
Until then, no one had seen or heard her, perhaps the soft and
elastic walls of the place did not allow it. It was a warm place, but the light could not reach
her. It was unbridgeable, no one should enter, no being could even look out, nothing could be
touched, at least, while she were there.
No one knew her unlimited ability to perceive and translate the languages that happened
around her. As if were a psychic, she was developing great ability to perceive energy, feelings
and information, all without making major moves; and if did, they did not respond to any plan
or strategy, perhaps it was only a slight sign of what she was being capable of. Anyway, she
could not act alone, for that was her angel who using an intuitive language, kept her informed
of the different situations presented daily.
Have you ever thought poetry is difficult? Poetry is a form of
literature that, as the other forms, seek to tell a story, convey a
message, describe and express feelings and emotions from our inner
self. However, it is complex in terms of structure and components
that are, mainly, focused on the rhythm, musicality and many
symbols and literary figures within it.
A survey performed by The latest National
Endowment for the arts established that ?in @twitterhandle 2002,
12.1 percent of adults read a poem on their own in the
preceding 12 months. In 2008, the rate slipped to 8.3
percent? (Bauerlein, M) and it continues decreasing
today. If you are part of this percentage progress on
the lecture, maybe your concept of poetry is not clear
enough for you to enter enthusiastically to the
subject. But if you do are into poetry, enjoy this
carefully arranged section for your interest.
As mentioned before, a poem always seek to convey a
message, but this message is hidden and discovered by
the author through a series of elements like symbols or
literary figures (as metaphors, personification, similes,
ironies and allegories); that means that rather than
having a literal meaning, they stand for something else
in the composition. Poems are also compounded by
stanzas. ?Stanza? is called to a set of lines a verse has
(there is not a limit of lines though.)
She Walks in Beauty
BY LORD BYRON
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that?s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
Dead poets society
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o?er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o?er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Fun fact: A set of several
famous poems became the
argument for the creation of a
whole movie called ?Dead Poet
Society?, an American drama
film written by Tom Schulman,
directed by Peter Weir and
starring Robin Williams. This
was released in 1989 and it tells
the story of an English teacher
DOES POETRY BENEFIT
YOU? YES IT DOES? !
L eaving behind the complexity
of it, poetry let you explore
yourself, your feelings and
emotions about a topic and put
them into words in a
composition of verses. In other
words, it allows you to free your
soul and, through emotions
translated into words, arrive to
the heart of the reader and
create an impact on him/her.
Poetry is not restricted to a
number of subjects, but widen to
the preference of the writer. Are
you going to give it a try? Yes?
Cabécar children of Alto del Chirripó
The heartbreaking news about the loss of four
Cábecar children of Alto del Chirripó raises awareness
about the reality indigenous people live in our country.
Costa Rica is rich in autochthonous populations, but as
well as many other countries, indigenous?communities
have been out of sight for decades. The story of this four
kids represents the lack of government commitment in
the fight for justice and equality for all citizens. One
morning, the Cabécar kids were sent to school as
usually; they woke up early because going to school
take them two hours of walking. They were used to this
routine and their parents were aware of the eminent
risks of walking long distances through the mountain
and crossing high flow rivers, but what can they do to
prevent those circumstances? Unfortunately, when the
kids were crossing the river, the high flow of the water
dragged them. This sad incident must have been
prevented if we would not be so blinded about their
needs.
INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
They lack of investment in education and
infrastructure shows the isolation of the indigenous
communities in our country. Even though the
indigenous populations have a different view of the
world, they should not be excluded from the social
welfare.
1
Alto del Chirripó
Additionally, UNA?s
school of pedagogy is constantly
supporting the indigenous
populations by providing
goods such as food,
cloth, and school supplies.
Being supportive and humanitarian
is the main characteristic
of Universidad Nacional
and its students who are
taken into trips to understand
the legacy of the indigenous
groups and the importance of
keeping their traditions while
providing opportunities for
success. The students of
?Desarrollo Costarricense y
Modelos de Educación? of the
school of pedagogy went to
Alto del Chirripó the last
month to visit the students of
two different rural schools,
?Kabe- Bata? and
?Nuque-Kicha?.
2
At Nuque-Kicha school,
college students could interact
with kindergarten children.
The main purpose of
the visit was the understanding
of the cultural heritage
and the educational system
of the indigenous communities.
Nevertheless, s tudents
of different majors in teaching
were privileged by the
unique natural landscape of
the community.
KABE-BATA AND NUQUE -KICHA SCHOOLS
The second visit was to Kabe- Bata
school, an institution directed by two professors
in charge of teaching the six primary levels.
Kabe- Bata as well as Nuque- Kicha are
bilingual schools due to the languages spoken
in the community, Cabécar and Spanish.
Consequently, professors of Kabe- Bata
school underlined the importance of having
professors of the same indigenous community.
They affirm ?It is advisable to have professors
who really understand the cultural
context of the community?. Although the Ministry
of Education (MEP) assigns a program for
teaching, it must be adapted culturally. The
understanding of the Cabécar language and
their view of education is indispensable for
teachers to work in the community, so that,
Universidad Nacional is preparing indigenous
youth to be the future professionals. At Kabe-
Bata school, students of the different majors
in teaching listened to the kids narrating tales
about nature and the spirits of nature in the
own dialect.
UNA SUPPORT
This tales show the importance of environmental
conservation which is deeply rooted in
their culture. Then, UNA students provided food,
clothes, and toys to the kids in both schools. Indescribable
happiness surrounded Cabécar kids who
had such nice moments playing with their new
toys. This contributions are meaningful for the
Cábecar community, all they need is support and
respect for their culture.
?Race, money and color of sk in do not matter
anymore, the fresh air of the mountains unify
us; w e are so similar, w e smile in the same
w ay?.
