REGIONAL – A 50-year-old
mail box is being recycled and
repainted to take on another,
even more worthy responsibility.
The box, painted in a U.S. flag
motif, will be a repository for
frayed and worn out American
flags.
This is the latest community
project by Donnie Jarvis, an Iraq
and Afghanistan war veteran who
spends much of his free time
helping and honoring veterans.
Flags decorate a lawn in Groveland.
Because Jarvis is designated
by the town of Newbury to
place flags on veteran’s graves,
he was asked frequently how old
American flags should be disposed
of correctly and with dignity.
“I feel the flag should be
respected,” Jarvis said. “There
are a lot of things that are not
being respected today. I hope that
teaching respect for the flag will
lead to respect for other things.”
This was not a trip to the New England Aquarium or even to the
pool at Cedarland. It was to the beach, but the students were not
there to play. They came here to work, to help save the dunes on this
often threatened barrier island.
Koomen’s students, under the supervision of University of New
Hampshire researchers Dr. Greg Moore and Alyson Eberhardt, came
to plant beach grass in bare spots on the dunes. The students last
week said they believe they planted between 120 and 200 clumps of
beach grass in one afternoon.
It was part of a much larger project that Moore and Eberhardt
have been spearheading to restore the grass on beaches from Plum
Island and Salisbury Beach north to Hampton Beach, NH. Moore
Free Mental Health & Wellness Forum Comes to Haverhill on June 23
Event is part of educational outreach to residents on mental health issues
HAVERHILL - A panel of
experts will discuss mental health
and its challenges at a forum
called “Understanding Mental
Wellness: Making Connections…
Staying Healthy” on Thursday
June 23, 2016. The event will be
from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at
the Haverhill Citizens Center, 10
Welcome St.
This is the second Englishspeaking
program in a series of
free mental health community
forums presented by Holy
Family Hospital and area health
coalitions. The June 23 forum
will be in collaboration with the
Lower Merrimack Valley and
Seacoast Health Partnership,
which serves greater Haverhill.
Topics that will be presented
include, defining mental health
and its relationship to overall
medical, spiritual and physical
wellness; accessing assistance and
treatment; dealing with a loved
one with a mental health issue
from a caretaker’s perspective;
and successfully coping with a
mental health issue from a firstperson
perspective. Information
on area resources also will be
available.
In the last 18 months, nearly
400 people have attended four of
these forums, offered in Spanish
and English, in Lawrence,
Haverhill and Methuen.
According to the latest data
issued in 2014 from the National
Institute of Mental Health, an
estimated 43.6 million adults in
the United States age 18 or older
— which represents 18.1% of
all U.S. adults— were diagnosed
with a mental illness within that
year.
Community health needs
assessments conducted last year
by Holy Family Hospital and the
Health Partnership, revealed that
emergency room visits, where
mental health was the primary
or associated cause, were higher
in Lawrence, Haverhill and
Methuen than the state average.
Participants in several
English and Spanish focus
groups conducted for the needs
assessment, identified mental
health as a major problem for
which people are in need of
information, treatment, and
assistance with coping skills.
Speakers for the June 23
forum include: Peter Amari, RN,
psychological nurse practitioner,
retired police officer; Cristen
Saving the Dunes: A Work in Progress
Continued from page 1
estimates that the team of
researchers, environmentalists,
college students and elementary
school students planted 40,000
plants last year and 20,000 so far
this year.
The program in Massachusetts
is funded by a grant to the
National Wildlife Federation
from a $100 million federal fund
created after Hurricane Sandy
ravaged the beaches along the
Atlantic Ocean. The plantings in
New Hampshire are funded by
state funds.
“We have a good system. It
has worked well,” Moore said.
The schools have responded
enthusiastically. “I think we have
met most of the (region’s) fourth
graders,” he said.
The lessons were well learned
by the students. “It helps the
community,” said Diana Reinoso,
when asked why the dune planting
project is important. “Without
the sand dunes, the people who
live there won’t have any beach
and could lose their houses.”
Daniel Lara explained the
planting procedure. First, the
students dig a hole in the sand
to the depth of a typical trowel.
Next, they put in a handful of
peat moss, followed by a pinch
of plant food. Then they separate
the clumps of grass and place the
plant’s roots in the peat moss.”
“You give it some love,” chimed
in Mason Foote, showing how
they patted the sand around the
plant.
“That pops the air bubbles”
around the roots, said Helena
Mason.
Some students grew attached to
the plants. Julia Rodgers said she
and her digging partner named
each of the plants before they
placed them in the sand.
All of the students knew they
were planting beach grass, not sea
grass, which Moore and his team
were quick to point out grows
underwater.
The day before the Hill View
Montessori students went to
Plum Island, Eberhardt visited the
school in the Ward Hill business
park to teach the students about
dunes and the threats to them.
She showed them a video shot
by a drone of the beaches so they
could see the large amounts of
bare sand, where the grass has
died off.
“It’s called beach grass die
off,” Eberhardt told the fourth,
fifth and six grade students.
“Microscopic worms eat the
roots.”
“These are worms so small they
cannot be seen without the aid
of a microscope,” said Scarlett
Helmeke. Beachgoers also don’t
help much by stepping on the
grass on their treks to the ocean,
explained the young researchers.
For that reason, the project
has installed new fencing along
the dunes that block off some of
the paths across the dunes. Some
beachgoers find the new fencing
annoying, Moore said, because
they block some paths that they
once used to get to the beach.
But the local homeowners like
them even if it means they have to
walk farther to get to the beach,
he said. The locals know the
fences are helping keep the sand
from blowing away and the beach
grass from being destroyed.
The goals of the UNH project,
which continues into 2017, are
to restore the dunes, explore
alternative fencing designs and
engage the community through
public forms and volunteer
planting projects like the one
conjunction with the NH
anthropologist Robert Goodby for
the program Digging into Native
History in New Hampshire on
June 9, 2016, at 6:30 pm at the
Seabrook Library, 25 Liberty
Lane in Seabrook. This program
explores how Abenaki history
in New England has been
reduced to near-invisibility as a
result of conquest, a conquering
culture that placed little value
on the Indian experience, and a
strategy of self-preservation that
required many Abenaki to go
“underground,” concealing their
true identities for generations
to avoid discrimination and
persecution. Robert Goodby
reveals archaeological evidence
that shows their deep presence
here, inches below the earth’s
surface. The program is free and
open to the public. Refreshments
will be served.
ANGELS IN AMERICA, Tony Kushner’s award-winning epic play, examines life, death, and politics in 1980s
America. Kushner created his “gay fantasia on national themes” to explore hope and humor in the face of the AIDS
crisis, fifteen years after the epidemic swept the globe. The terrifying death toll could well be seen as an indictment
of the federal government’s inaction and willful ignorance, which was rooted in stigma, lies, and fear. Kushner’s
play resonates as clearly and relevantly today as when it was written twenty-five years ago. The achingly beautiful
language weaves an ethereally complex yet starkly clear tapestry of a tragic, devastating time in American history.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing
yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their
own pace.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext
of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity in order to avoid raising resentment in
the workplace.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Thomas Jefferson was born in
1743, the third of 10 children.
His political career began when
he was elected to the Virginia
House of Burgesses in 1769. In
1775, he was a delegate to the
Second Continental Congress in
Philadelphia. During that congress,
he was the principal author of the
Declaration of Independence.
He returned to Virginia, where
in 1779 he was elected governor
of Virginia, a position which he
held for two years. In 1783, he
was appointed a delegate to the
Confederation Congress and in
1785 was appointed minister to
France -- a position he held until
1789. That same year he was
appointed secretary of state.
In 1796, Jefferson ran for
president but was defeated by John
Adams. Having the second most
electoral votes, however, Jefferson
became vice president. In 1800,
he was elected as the third U.S.
president, the office in which he
served for two terms, from 1801 to
1809. He died on July 4, 1826, at
the age of 83.
In 1824, describing the then
81-year-old Jefferson, Daniel
Webster wrote, “His mouth is well
formed and still filled with teeth;
The results of a long-term
Swedish study suggest that help
for our aging brains might be as
close as the vitamin aisle in the
drugstore. Vitamin B-12 was
shown to slow the rate of brain
aging ... probably.
Homocysteine, a non-protein
amino acid, is the culprit in
increasing the rate of brain aging,
and vitamin B-12 slows that rate.
Between 2001 and 2009, some
500 participants over age 60 were
examined and assessed, including
medical history, cognitive function
Brighter Smiles...
A Brief History Lesson
it is strongly compressed, bearing
an expression of contentment
and benevolence.” That same year
Jefferson wrote to Charles Willson
Peale, a long-time friend and part
of the intellectual elite of the time
stating, “I am particularly happy
not needing your porcelain teeth. I
have lost only one [tooth] by age,
the rest continuing sound.” Like
Jefferson, Peale was a renaissance
man of many arts, trades, and
interests, one of which was the
development and refinement of
porcelain artificial teeth, which
were replacing ivory, animal, and
human teeth for dentures.
Jefferson was fastidious about
his health. Documents that have
survived, mostly archived at the
Library of Congress, reflect his
dental care. His journals list eight
dental visits between 1772 at age 29
and 1824 at age 81. Other dental
needs he noted in his journals and
letters included the purchase of
toothpicks and toothbrushes, the
latter with “the hair neither too
strong nor too weak.”
In the late 1770s through the
1800s, pig, horse, and badger
hair were used for bristles on
toothbrushes. Another common
method of teeth cleaning in the era
was placing soot and salt on a rag or
sponge and rubbing it on the teeth.
Jefferson also recorded the purchase
of “a silver toothpick case,” in 1785
while he was minister to France.
Jefferson experienced only two
known serious dental problems in
Senior Scene
Help for Aging Brains?
and B-12 levels. Brain volume was
measured during the study. Higher
levels of B-12 seemed to help lower
the rate of homocystein.
Not all researchers are sold on
the conclusions, however. Maybe
it’s another lifestyle health factor
that’s involved. They do think that
trials are warranted, with more
in-depth looks at the levels of
homocysteine and B-12.
At the same time, they point
to a previous study with basically
the same results, this time with
participants over age 70 who
already had mild cognitive
impairment and received a few
vitamins, not just B-12. There
was less brain volume loss in those
who took the vitamins.
In yet another study, B-12
deficiency was associated with
his life. In December 1807 at age
which left me last night.”
In November 1808, 11 months
after he disclosed his problem,
there is a journal entry in which
Are you holding back
he discloses he borrowed $5 to pay
“Dr. Bruff” to extract a tooth. A
The
week later in December 1808,
he
wrote yet another letter to Martha:
face.” He stated that he “suffered
• Mercury-free Dentistry
Grinding/Clenching Therapy
• Custom Dentures
“was relieved by a suppuration and
• Appearance-Related Dentistry
have since been able to extract the
tooth.”
Aside from his obvious genius,
Jefferson cared for and took care of
his health throughout his life. He
did not use any tobacco. According
to Dr. John Bumgarner in his
book The Health of the Presidents,
“Jefferson encouraged exercise,”
with walking, horseback riding,
and shooting as his favorite forms
of exercise.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there are
So where does that leave us? Still
unsure about the actual mechanism
of vitamin B-12 as it pertains
to counteracting loss of brain
volume, at least until researchers
satisfy their need for longer-term
trials with every parameter and
detail to their liking.
Meanwhile, unless we get the
all-clear from our doctor to take
a vitamin B-12 tablet every day,
there are a few additions to our
diet that might help, if the study
results are true. Sardines and beef
liver have more than enough B-
12. Even milk and salmon have
enough for the daily requirement,
as do Swiss cheese and eggs.
