lockportlegend.com life & arts the Lockport Legend | June 9, 2016 | 17 Walkathon draws pets, owners for park stroll Tim Hadac, Freelance Reporter The threat of rain kept the numbers down at the annual Tender Loving Care Animal Shelter walkathon Saturday, June 4, at Dellwood Park in Lockport, but the morning drizzle did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 50-plus people and dogs in attendance. “The weather can’t stop the fun we’re having or the cause we’re supporting — helping care for animals that are abused, abandoned or neglected,” said Janine Carter, who with her husband, Dennis, co-founded TLC in Homer Glen, which has served the area since 1974. As disc jockey Steve Peterson spun pop tunes consistent with the activity — such as Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog,” Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life” and Passion Pit’s “Take a Walk” — dogs of all shapes, sizes and colors led their owners to the Egret Pavilion. Attendees pledged money for the shelter, and tails and tongues wagged in anticipation of the 10 a.m. start of the 45-minute stroll through the park. One of the dogs eager to put her paws to the path was Shelby, a 9-year-old shepherd, husky and Akita mix known locally for her years of work as a certified therapy dog. “People really brighten up when they see her,” said Homer Glen resident Mary Ann Lukas, the person at the other end of Shelby’s leash. “Often, people will say that she reminds them of a dog they once had.” Attendees at the Tender Loving Care Animal Shelter walkathon make their way through Dellwood Park Saturday, June 4, in Lockport. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media The animals at TLC can help turn a person’s life around, according to New Lenox resident Tracy Lesmeister, who helps organize fundraisers for the shelter. “My two girls — Chassis and Renny — are the craziest dogs you’ve ever seen,” Lesmeister said. “They’re half dachshund, half pit bull. I call them wienie-pits. They’re like dachshunds on steroids.” Adopted by Lesmeister from TLC eight years ago, the dogs helped her through the most difficult period of her life, she said. “A dog gives you structure, a reason to get up in the morning, someone to take care of, and that can help you forget about your troubles or at least put them in a larger context,” she said. “And shelter dogs are special in the sense that they seem to know that you saved them, and they give you that much more love back. Sometimes, it’s a case of who saved who.” About half of TLC’s residents are dogs. Over the years, TLC has taken in cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, turtles, a horse and other assorted critters in need. The shelter has “gone through a lot of changes over the years,” Carter said. “We’re bigger, better and can do more than we used to.” She also noted progress in the larger picture. “Forty-some years ago, there were more than 16 million [unwanted] animals destroyed every year in the U.S.,” she said. “Now, it’s down to about five million. That’s still too high, of course, but that drop in numbers is something to be proud of. ” Through pledges collected by walkers and donations from individuals and businesses, TLC hoped to raise about $2,000 at the event to support approximately 40 animals currently at the shelter, as well as cover future expenses, Carter said.
