IMPORTANT CHANGES TO MOT TESTER TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
As part of its ongoing strategy to modernise the current
UK MOT scheme, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency
(DVSA) is changing the way MOT training is carried out.
What’s changing?
New MOT Testers and Quality Controllers:
All NEW MOT Testers will now be required to hold an IMI level
3 qualification before gaining their MOT Tester qualification.
Any NEW MOT Managers, (previously known as Quality
Controllers), will have to sit and pass a new MOT Manager
course from September 1st 2016.
Existing MOT Testers:
From April 2016, the DVSA have replaced the currently
suspended MOT Tester refresher course with annual
training and an assessment.
The DVSA will not deliver the new annual training or
assessments, this will be provided by IMI approved MOT
training providers. The existing 5 year refresher course
has also been abolished.
All Testers will have to complete the new MOT annual training
and assessment in order to maintain their testing status.
The new process will follow a Continual Professional
Development (CPD) model with testers required to complete
training and pass an assessment every year for the vehicle
classes that they test. The contents of the CPD requirements
are decided each year by the DVSA.

MOT Tester qualification, if not already held
• IMI Level 3 Light Vehicle Inspection training and
Assessment, 2 days training followed by 1 day
assessment. As above but includes LVI training.
Required before taking the MOT Tester qualification
• New MOT Manager training, previously known as
Quality Controller
