Board of Trustees<br />

Welcome to Icon’s third triennial conference<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great surround<strong>in</strong>gs of Conference Aston<br />

<strong>in</strong> Birm<strong>in</strong>gham.<br />

The conference is set to deliver a packed programme<br />

of speakers offer<strong>in</strong>g a wealth of presentations that<br />

will question accepted practices, explore how science<br />

<strong>and</strong> technology can contribute to our knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

provide <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to develop<strong>in</strong>g practice.<br />

The arena is set for conservators with<strong>in</strong> every<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider heritage profession to come<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r to share skills, knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I hope that <strong>the</strong> conference will stimulate debate,<br />

exp<strong>and</strong> our horizons <strong>and</strong> offer some possibilities<br />

for how <strong>the</strong> modern conservation can rise to <strong>the</strong><br />

challenges of <strong>the</strong> <strong>21st</strong> century.<br />

As we consider <strong>the</strong> fast mov<strong>in</strong>g pace of change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

creative <strong>and</strong> cultural sectors, it also provides a chance<br />

to pause, take stock, <strong>and</strong> to explore how conservation<br />

of our past can make a vital contribution to our future.<br />

This is an important opportunity for us to focus on <strong>the</strong><br />

value of conservation <strong>and</strong> how we can br<strong>in</strong>g that to<br />

<strong>the</strong> attention of decision makers, advocates <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wider public.<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r you are an experienced conservation<br />

professional or are active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider heritage sector,<br />

please enjoy your experiences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g days <strong>and</strong><br />

return home from Icon 2016 <strong>in</strong>formed, engaged,<br />

<strong>and</strong> above all <strong>in</strong>spired.<br />

Welcome by Director of BMT<br />

I am delighted that Icon is work<strong>in</strong>g with Birm<strong>in</strong>gham<br />

Museums Trust to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> third triennial conference<br />

to Birm<strong>in</strong>gham. Like many o<strong>the</strong>r cities, Birm<strong>in</strong>gham<br />

has been undergo<strong>in</strong>g a period of unprecedented<br />

change. In 2012 <strong>the</strong> City Council established its<br />

museum service as an educational charity. The Trust’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent status has enabled us to adjust to <strong>the</strong><br />

rapid decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> public fund<strong>in</strong>g for arts <strong>and</strong> culture<br />

by becom<strong>in</strong>g more responsive <strong>and</strong> entrepreneurial.<br />

Birm<strong>in</strong>gham Museums Trust now generates over 60%<br />

of its own <strong>in</strong>come, our visitor numbers are ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

we are attract<strong>in</strong>g more diverse audiences.<br />

The Trust is fortunate <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g one of very few<br />

museums <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> West Midl<strong>and</strong>s to have a<br />

conservation department. Our award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g team<br />

are active across many areas, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g research,<br />

volunteer programm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> professional<br />

development. As a consequence <strong>the</strong> Trust <strong>and</strong><br />

department are committed to support<strong>in</strong>g Icon<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> professional st<strong>and</strong>ards it represents.<br />

I look forward to attend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> conference <strong>and</strong><br />

discover<strong>in</strong>g how <strong>the</strong> conservation profession is fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> adapt<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> changes that <strong>the</strong>se challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

times are provid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
