The video-sharing experience

Introduction:
With this presentation, we intend to introduce the listeners to the website based on
video sharing and commenting, Youtube, one of the most used in all of the Internet,
and what it consists of.
We hope you appreciate our efforts.

What is Youtube?
YouTube is a website that allows its users to upload and share videos in digital format.
YouTube uses Adobe Flash and HTML5 formats to make content available. It is the
most popular type of website due to the possibility to host any videos (except
copyrighted materials, although this material is found in abundance in the system). It
hosts a wide variety of movies, video clips and homemade materials.

Who created Youtube?
Youtube was created by 3 people: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. Chad
Hurley studied design, Chen and Karim studied Computer Science. They all worked on
Paypal, were they met eachother, and decided to start a partnership in order to create
Youtube. They launched it in 2005.

The “need” of Youtube:
Before the launch of YouTube, there weren’t simple methods available to ordinary computer
users who wanted to put their videos on the Internet. With user-friendly interface, YouTube
made it possible for anyone who uses a PC to post on the Internet a video that millions of
people could see in a few minutes, or even hours.
The wide range of topics covered by YouTube includes video sharing, one of the most
relevant parts of Internet culture.

The “Core” of Youtube
The YouTube technology is based on Adobe Flash Player. This technology allows the
website to display videos with quality comparable to more established technologies on
the market, which generally require to download and install a plug-in in the browser for
viewing. Flash also requires a plug-in, but Adobe believes that the Flash 8 plug-in is
present in about 90% of computers with Internet access.

The success of Youtube:
In 2006, YouTube presented the annual "YouTube Video Awards." The categories
include "the most adorable video" and "the most creative video". YouTube appoints
competitors and its users decide the winner by votation. Only the most original videos
created by users are named, along with them.
The US magazine Time (13 November 2006 edition) elected YouTube the best
invention of the year, for creating a new way for millions of people to entertain
themselves with, educate themselves and collide in a way that has never been seen
before.

Youtube: a way of living?
Nowadays, there are people that make uploading their video-content on youtube their job.
Such people are given the name of “Youtuber”. An example of such way of living is
PewDiePie, whom raised 33 million subscribers in 4 days of “work”. For each subscription,
the youtuber gains more fame, that can be transformed in partnerships with other companies
that provide equipment and money to them in order to continue to make videos with
improved quality and to increase their own reputation. Here in Portugal, there are few cases
that can make Youtube their job like Wuant, TheRemedyChannel, DarkFrame, Rurikhan and
others.

Conclusion:
With this job, the working group concludes that the Youtube website was a decising
step in the evolution and increasing fame of the Internet, as an entertainment
instrument, information gathering and so forth...
