Letter to the editor:
Judge Nielson has announced his retirement and I want to thank him for the
years of service he has given to the three counties of this judicial district. Other
have stepped forward seeking this position. Two of the candidates, Jessica Taylor
and David Turplesmith, have worked as my deputies in the Stevens County
Prosecutors Office. As a result, I have had opportunity to make observations
of both of them with regard to integrity, maturity, temperament and judgment.
Jessica Taylor has all the qualities that will make her an excellent Superior
Court Judge. She is experienced, hardworking, honest and mature. I endorse
her without reservation.
Prestige Home Mortgage:
Real People Helping Real People
By Bonnie Stichart
One of the nicest
things about working
with local businesses
is the feeling that your
needs are understood.
This is important with
any transaction involving
money, and is even
more necessary when
a mortgage is being
worked out. There are
numerous books, articles,
and even radio
shows that give advice
about mortgages, but
nothing beats a real person
with experience.
Jennifer Thornburg,
one of the professionals
at Prestige Home
Mortgage, is a hard
working and reliable
person. She has worked
in the mortgage industry
for over fifteen years and
is currently an independent
contractor at Prestige
Home Mortgage
in Kettle Falls, which
has been in business for
twenty years. Her long
experience in the field
has enabled her to acquire
knowledge about
every sort of mortgage
question possible.
In the late 1990s,
Jennifer became interested
in how homes are
bought, sold, and refinanced.
She taught
herself how to be a loan
officer – gaining expertise
in customer service,
the execution of loan applications,
and loan processing.
“It’s still a passion
of mine to help people
with their unique situations,”
Jennifer said,
“and to see them ecstatic
when they have closed
on their dream home.”
Jennifer knows
something about
dreams. She grew up
on the Spokane Indian
Reservation, though her
family spent some time
in Arizona and California.
But she always
wanted a more country
lifestyle. She now lives
on the Kettle River with
the kind of view she had
dreamed of. She likes to
help others achieve their
dreams too.
Among those she
has helped was a woman,
on an owner contract,
who had a low
credit score. She had
been in danger of losing
her home for a breach
of contract. Other lenders
turned her down, but
Jennifer stepped in and
helped save the family
home.
“I specialize in
helping first time homebuyers
with little or zero
down,” explained Jennifer.
“I also assist senior
citizens who own
their homes with reverse
mortgages. This gives
them a monthly income
or a lump sum without
selling their homes and
needing to move.”
For those who have
a For Sale by Owner
house, Jennifer can help
in qualifying possible
buyers.
Another specialty
of Jennifer’s is to assist
clients, who are in the
process of a divorce, to
reach an equitable division
of their property.
She can help the one
remaining in the home
with refinancing and the
one who is moving qualify
for his or her next
home. She also assists in
freezing joint credit until
all credit is separated.
The process of getting
a mortgage starts
with a simple ten-minute
conversation to complete
the application. The next
step is to gather income
and asset information,
as well as e-signed disclosures.
Jennifer then
submits the documents
for formal approval. At
this point, an appraisal
is ordered to determine
the value of the home.
When everything is approved,
the borrower is
asked for any conditions
the underwriter would
like to see. The underwriter
is the one who
makes sure that all documentation
meets federal
and investor guidelines;
the conditions could be
additional pay stubs, letters
of explanation, or
other things pertinent to
the loan process. Once
those are cleared, final
loan documents are ordered
and the loan is
closed.
Rail-Trail Surface Improved Along Curlew Lake
Lundimo Meadow Road to the Curlew School then
North along the majestic Kettle River and ending at
the tunnel. These other improvements, including a
new vault toilet at the Black’s Beach Trailhead, are
scheduled for later this summer.
Republic, Ferry County, WA.
Over the last two weeks an eight foot wide
smooth, firm and very user friendly surface made
of crusher fines was spread and compacted on
2.3 miles of the Ferry County Rail Tail along the
West side of Curlew Lake. The new surfacing from
Pete’s Retreat South to Herron Creek Road connects
to the improvements made just last summer
for a total of 5.5 miles.
The new surfacing was made possible by a
$198,000 Washington State Recreation and Conservation
Office (RCO) non-motorized trail grant. Also
included in the phase 3 plan are surface improvements
to approximately 2 miles of rail-trail from
The RCO grant required a 50% match that was
met through generously donated materials from
Kinross Gold Corp., transportation of materials by
ACI Northwest Inc., equipment use from Stott’s
Construction and volunteer hours from Curlew Job
Corps. students, Ferry County Rail Trail Partners
(FCRTP) as well as many other local stakeholders
and trail advocates.
Bob Whittaker, President of the FCRTP, said,
“Now that the full six mile length of trail next to
Curlew Lake is improved you can see the greater
potential to connect the Lake to the town of Republic.
And how sweet is it that come this fall the Curlew
School will have a new, safe, off-highway route
to the center of town and beyond?”
Bobbi Weller, Chair of the County’s Rail Corridor
Committee (also an adjacent landowner to the
trail) commented, “It is so wonderful to see more
people on the trail. It goes to show just how important
it is to win these trail grants.”
foreman Rick Baum - standing against the paver AKA “The Smooth Move.”
Ferry County Rail Trail Vice President and retired Echo Bay Mines geologist Rick Baum is pictured mixing up the new surface for the trail. The formula is 3/8 minus crusher fines with 10% water added. Volunteers
and Curlew Job Corps students applied the material to the surface of the trail (using the paver) and then used a vibrating roller to compact it. Once dry it creates a firm and smooth ADA / user-friendly surface.

Letter to the Editor:
This past week the Forest Service arranged for a mediating group called EnviroIssues
to host a Public Hearing Session concerning the revised Colville National Forest Plan -- a
plan that will affect every citizen in the area, whether directly or indirectly, over the next
decade or longer. Very few were at that meeting, so, for the benefit of the broader community,
one of the several citizen presentations is submitted here as follows:
If we were a Constitutional County, as a legal subdivision within the State of Washington
according to Article XI of the WA Constitution, wouldn’t we lawfully have full jurisdiction
of the whole area and extent of our county?
If we were a constitutionally abiding County, wouldn’t the State rightfully sanction our
right of full legal jurisdiction of our county and not allow it to be infringed?
Since a national forest is, by definition, a federal construct within our county’s borders,
shouldn’t the federal government -- which is a limited entity with clearly enumerated powers,
including minimal land-holdings -- be required to be subject to, and fully coordinate with,
the States and specifically the counties affected by its occupation of portions of that county?
How is it, then, that the federal agency called the National Forest Service, considers it
IT’S HERE!
Custom DeCks
“Built to last a lifetime.”
irrelevant in real practice to subordinate its authority to that of the State, and the State’s legal
subdivisions, namely the counties?
As a free people in contract with the federal government through the U.S. Constitution,
we assert our rightful jurisdiction over the lands within our respective counties, and we assert
the legal necessity of the federal agency, the Forest Service, to coordinate its efforts with our
elected officials for the authority to manage the lands within our borders so as to preserve our
county’s culture, economy, and assets, which ultimately provides for the general welfare of
our country as a whole.
Respectfully submitted,
Kelly Tacoma, Northport, WA
Dog For Sale
A guy is driving
around Tennessee and he
sees a sign in front of a
house: “Talking Dog For
Sale.” He rings the bell
and the owner tells him
the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into
the backyard and sees a
Labrador retriever sitting
there. “You talk?”
he asks.
“Yep,” the Lab replies.
“So, what’s your
story?”
The Lab looks up
and says, “Well, I discovered
that I could talk
when I was pretty young.
“I wanted to help
the government, so I
told the CIA about my
gift, and in no time at
all they had me jetting
from country to country,
sitting in rooms with
spies and world leaders,
because no one figured
a dog would be eavesdropping.
I was one of
their most valuable spies
for eight years running.
“But, the jetting
around really tired me
out, and I knew I wasn’t
getting any younger so I
decided to settle down. I
signed up for a job at the
airport to do some undercover
security wandering
near suspicious
characters and listening
in. I uncovered some
incredible dealings and
was awarded a batch of
medals.
“I got married, had
a mess of puppies, and
now I’m just retired.”
The guy is amazed.
He goes back in and asks
the owner what he wants
for the dog.
“Ten dollars,” the
guy says.
“Ten dollars? This
dog is amazing. Why
on Earth are you selling
him so cheap?”
“Because he’s a
liar. He never did any of
that stuff.”
Family Car
A teenage girl had
just been given familycar
privileges, when she
returned home very late
from a party.
The next morning
her father went out to
the driveway to get the
newspaper and came
back into the house
frowning.
At 11:30 am the
girl sleepily walked into
the kitchen, and her father
asked her, “What
time did you get in last
night?”
“Not too late, Dad,”
she replied nervously.
Dead-pan, her father
said, “Then I’ll have
to talk with the paperboy
about putting my paper
under the front wheel of
the car.”
