Resolve to Be a Lifelong Learner 

Wisdom does not come automatically with age (Job 32:8–9). For many aged saints, gray hair and a good head go 

hand in hand. But for others, far too many others, length of life only entrenches stubbornness, irritability, and 

careless ways of thinking and living. Life experiences may increase inevitably with age, but without some long-term 

pattern of receptivity and intentionality, multiplied experiences will only create more confusion than clarity. 

For Christians in particular, the stakes are even higher for cultivating holy curiosity and the mindset of a lifelong 

learner. Teaching and learning are at the very heart of our faith. To be a “disciple” means to be a “learner.” Our 

Master is the consummate teacher, and the central task of his church is teaching (Titus 1:9; 1 Timothy 3:2; 5:17; 

Hebrews 13:7; Matthew 28:20). God designed the church to be a community of lifelong learners under the earthly 

guidance of leaders who are teachers at heart. 

Continuous health in the Christian life is inextricably linked to continuous learning. When we say “learners,” we don’t 

mean of mere facts, information, and head knowledge. We mean all that and more. We don’t just learn facts, but we 

learn a Face. We’re not just learners of principles, but of a Person. We are lifelong learners in a relationship with 

Jesus as we hear His voice in His word and have His ear in prayer, and share in community with His body, all 

through the power of his Spirit. 

Diversify your sources, settings and seasons of teaching. 

• LEARN from personal conversations. Personal conversations with experienced, knowledgeable and trustworthy 

people are tops on the list. You can dialogue and ask questions and hear words tailored just for you, as they 

become aware of your situation and needs. 

• LEARN from reading books. Books have the amazing value of being accessible anytime and anywhere; you can 

go at your speed, in your time and place, and re-read as needed. 

• LEARN from taking classes. Classes provide the advantage of learning in context with others, benefiting from their 

questions, and being required to focus on the material at some set time for some particular season. 

• LEARN from educational videos. They provide the flexibility of watching at a time most convenient for you and are 

beneficial for visuals. 

• LEARN from listening to audio recordings. This is perhaps the most underrated way to learn while multitasking 

(exercising, cleaning, cooking, or eating) Listening to a recording engages the mind in ways different than video 

instruction by leaning on the imagination to picture the teacher and setting. 

Embrace the Identity of a Lifelong Learner 

Fight against the current that restricts learning as essential to childhood and adolescence but something unsuitable 

for adulthood. Resist the urge to waste spare time on mindless entertainment. Embrace your need for the glory of 

God, and brace yourself for nonstop learning, not as a burden, but a blessing of great joy. Own the truth that as 

Christians, we never “arrive,” but we are always arriving. Welcome to the journey!

Direction for My Journey to Maturity 

There are four levels listed for My Journey to Maturity: Awareness, Knowledge, Skill and Discipleship. Every 

member at Sugar Creek Church of Christ is expected to accomplish each level of their journey. 

1. It is recommended that the Awareness level be completed as early as possible. Since the number of classes, 

class sizes, and dates offered are limited, the classes within each Maturity Level can be completed in any order. 

2. If the Maturity Level classes you need are not offered or filled to capacity, you are expected to enroll in one of the 

Life Group classes listed. 

3. Many members may have already completed one or more of the classes being offered. All completed classes 

will be listed in your Breeze profile and you will be able to mark Classes as completed. 

• All members are expected to be in a class throughout the year. 

• All classes are 1 hour in length and attendance will be taken for each class session. 

The Four Stages of Learning 

AWARENESS LEVEL 

Before learning can occur, we must first establish a "need to know.” The Awareness Level provides a broad 

overview of the need, describes the scope of the information to be learned, and clarifies the objectives of the 

journey.

KNOWLEDGE LEVEL 

The Knowledge Level is the development of understanding, enabling students to connect the relationships 

between awareness and the elements of knowledge. 

Classes Include: Healthy Christian Community & 5 Things God Uses To Grow Your Faith and more! 

SKILL LEVEL 

"Now that I understand all this, how does it really apply to my life? What am I supposed to do with it?" The 

Skill Level defines and describes, in detail, how particular knowledge and skills are applied to your life, 

family, ministry and career. 

Classes Include: Life Stewardship & Dream Team: Ministry Training for All 

DISCIPLESHIP LEVEL 

The Discipleship Level is the level of growth momentum. This is where you develop the capacity to feed 

yourself and others with less challenge. The Discipleship Level introduces you to observation, modeling, 

feedback, repetition, mastery and eventually doing it without having to think about it. 

Classes Include: The Bible: Why & Who Cares? How to Study the Bible, The Disciples Maker's Academy, The 

Fisherman's Pier, Jewish Manners & Customs, and Church History, Life & Teachings of Christ 

LIFE GROUPS 

Life is not meant to be lived alone. You were created to experience life with other people, and that’s why at 

Sugar Creek, we’ve included life groups in the journey. If you want to grow in your relationship with Jesus, 

you need to have intentional relationships with people who have the same goal. In a Life Group, eight to 

twelve adults in the same stage of life meet regularly for a few weeks to pursue spiritual growth and healthy 

relationships.

Have you discovered the unique purpose God has for your life? This small group study 

is designed specifically to take you to that next level of purpose. It will reveal how God 

has designed you and help you see how that fits the intention for which you were 

created. In these four lessons, you will unpack the elements of God’s blueprints for 

creating you. Each session includes tools that help bring clarity to your future goals and 

show you how to have the most fulfilling life possible – a life lived for God’s purposes, by 

God’s design. 

4 Habits of Spiritual Maturity 

Dates: February 7-28, April 3-24, June 5-26, August 7-28, October 2-23, Nov. 27-Dec. 18 

Once you're born into God's family, God wants you to grow up. What does it mean to be 

born again? It means to be born into God's family. Just like you've got a physical birth 

that gave you the desire to grow physically, you've had a spiritual birth, and God wants 

you to grow spiritually. There are a lot of immature Christians, but God says He wants 

you to grow up. This class will focus on four basic habits that every Christian needs to 

develop in order to grow to spiritual maturity. This class will equip you with the skills you 

need to begin these habits and will explain the tools you will need to continue these 

habits.

Healthy Christian Community 

Dates: January 3-31, March 6-27, May 1-29, July 3-24, Sept. 4-25, Oct. 30-Nov. 20 

Why is community so important to your spiritual life? You can’t grow spiritually unless 

you’re connected relationally. God designed you that way. He wants to use other 

people to grow you, and He wants to use you to grow other people. During this fourweek 

study, you’ll explore how building deep relationships with the people in your group 

and serving the larger community around you will grow your faith. You’ll learn why your 

unique story matters to God and to the people with whom you live. Community 

provides a great opportunity for you to grow in your relationship with God, because life 

is better connected. 

5 Things God Uses To Grow Your Faith 

Dates: February 7-28, April 3-24, June 5-26, August 7-28, Oct. 2-23, Nov. 27-Dec. 18 

Imagine how different your outlook on life would be if you had absolute confidence that 

God was with you. Imagine how differently you would respond to difficulties and 

temptations if you knew with certainty that God was in the midst of all of it and was 

planning to leverage it for good. In other words, imagine what it would be like to have 

mature faith. In this four-part series, we will build a biblical case for five things God 

uses to grow BIG faith.

God's Plan for Mankind 


Almost half of all Americans claim to be “born again,” but do they know what those words really 

mean? Jesus tells us we must be born again, so a proper understanding of what it means is 

crucial. Christians often describe themselves as “born again.” While this phrase is familiar to 

many, people rarely explain what they mean when they use it. Unfortunately, talk of being “born 

again” often accompanies a man-centered understanding of salvation.

Worship In Spirit & In Truth 


Worship must be offered in faith, from a contrite heart, with the motivation of honoring our 

Heavenly Father. This insightful class reveals the biblical portrait of worship involving our whole 

heart, soul, and mind, as well as the important involvement of each of our total being. 

Defending the Faith 


There is one thing all unbelievers have in common—unbelief. But there are many types of 

unbelievers. There are those unbelievers who cling to a false religious system. Yet while others 

have no well thought out reasons, there are many who are quite confident in their unbelief 

appealing to certain arguments. How well are you prepared to answer the various kinds of 

people with their questions and criticisms? In this class you will be equipped to give a reasoned 

defense of the Christian faith. 

A Closer Look at Eternity 


In today’s culture, many people have a distorted view of eternity. Heaven is a place 

shrouded in mystery. Even in many churches, hell has been forgotten. In this class, we 

will take a closer look at eternity and why our understanding of heaven and hell are vital 

to our understanding of the Gospel.

Knowing the Will of God 

Dates: Sept. 4- Oct. 23 

Who of us doesn’t want to know God’s will for our lives? In the Bible, there are a 

number of examples of people trying to legitimately determine God’s will. The Bible has 

also given clear prohibitions against certain practices used by the pagan culture. Yet 

sometimes, Christians confuse that which is prohibited with that which God has 

allowed. Is there really a way for the Christian to know God’s will? In this series, we will 

gain the biblical guidelines and principles to help us determine the will of God in our 

lives. 

Pleasing God 

Dates: Oct. 30 - Dec. 18 

Pleasing God offers practical guidelines for Christian living. Discover how to be diligent 

in overcoming our enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil. This series is an 

encouraging, no-nonsense look at the lifelong process of sanctification.

Life Stewardship 

Dates: May 4 - June 8 and August 3- September 7 

Stewardship is not just a financial activity. It is living all of your life for the glory of God. 

How you see your life will shape your life. Your perspective will influence how you invest 

your time, spend your money, use your talents, value your relationships, and even face 

hardships. In this six session small group study you will learn to see your life from God’s 

point of view and worship God by managing your life for his glory. 

SKILL LEVEL

• Class Size: 15 to 20 

Dream Team: Ministry Training for All 

Dates: June 15 - July 20 and September 14 - October 19 

The goal of the Dream Team is to develop and equip ministry leaders at all levels of 

maturity and skills for effective ministry leadership. The Dream Team students will be 

stretched theologically and exposed to new models of ministry to raise leader worth 

following. All current and emerging leaders are required to complete a class. The 2016 

Dream Team goal is to develop the skill of effective communication. 

In his book Everyone Communicates, Few Connect, Maxwell shares the five principles 

and five practices to develop the crucial skill of connecting: Finding Common Ground, 

Keeping Your Communication Simple, Capturing People’s Interest, Inspiring People, and 

Staying Authentic in All Your Relationships.

Disciple Maker’s Academy (DMA) 

Dates: October 19, 2016 - April 27, 2017 

Teaching healthy Christian habits is the essence of Disciple Making. D.M.A was 

founded with this simple process in mind. We exist to help each student earnestly 

defend the faith, to expose God’s redemptive plan to the lost and to grow faithfully each 

day in the person of Jesus Christ. Our aim is not merely to make disciples but to raise 

effective “disciple-makers.” “Disciples are made, not born” (Matt. 28:18-21). We 

designed each lesson to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to be 

effective in the Lord’s church.

Most members of the Lord’s church say their faith matters, but few are willing to invest 

much energy in the pursuit of spiritual growth. The Disciple Maker’s Academy serves to 

equip the local congregation to effectively fulfill the “Great Commission” of Jesus Christ. 

A disciple-maker is a laborer who is committed to becoming more like Jesus and who 

strives to make every effort to influence the world around them for Christ. The academy 

consists of a six-month rolling semester. We encourage you to remain prayerful as you 

embrace this great opportunity to grow spiritually and create a lasting impact. 


The Classes within the four maturity levels can be completed in any order. If the Maturity Level classes you need are not 

offered or filled to capacity, you are expected to enroll in one of the Wednesday Life Group Classes listed.

The Bible: Why and Who Cares? (6 weeks) 

Dates: January 6 - February 10, March 30- May 4, September 14 - October 19 

The concept that an ancient book might offer sufficiency for life rubs against the grain of 

our postmodern culture. How can one source possess all the answers for life, let alone 

an archaic, outdated text?

How to Study the Bible (6 weeks) 

Dates: February 17-March 23, August 3 - September 7, October 26 - December 7 

You try faithfully to read and study your Bible, yet you still wonder, How can I study the 

Bible so it really makes a difference in my life? Or, What’s the best way to dig into the 

Word? There’s no more important skill you can cultivate than handling your Bible with 

understanding and accuracy. 

Life & Teachings of Christ (12 weeks) 

Dates: May 11 - July 27 

Journey with Jesus from His prophecy to His triumphant victory on Calvary’s cross. 

The Fisherman’s Pier (12 weeks) 

Dates: January 6 - March 23 

This class is a study of the nature and practice of evangelism. Attention is given to 

the theology and historical development of evangelism, personal and team 

evangelism methods, and the use of apologetics. This is practical study evangelism 

will equip each student with practical tools to make them effective to win souls for 

Jesus. 

Jewish Manners and Customs (8 weeks) 

Dates: April 6 - May 25 

For many Christians, reading the Bible has been like listening to one end of a phone 

conversation. We read our Bible as though its peoples were American and interpret 

their sayings in terms of our own background and psychology. Oftentimes we may 

have been left with questions like what it means to heap burning coals on 

someone’s head, or what happened between the Old and New Testament? Jewish 

Manners & Customs gives you “the other half of the conversation.” 

Church History 101: Pentecost to Reformation (10 weeks) 

Dates: September 7 - November 16 

An examination of the history of the church from the first century to the dawn of the 

Reformation (1500). Attention will be given to the major events, people, and issues 

that have shaped church history within this time period, as well as how these things 

integrate with biblical norms.

A Man and His Design 

Dates: February 3 - March 9 

The series is designed to inspire and equip men to pursue authentic manhood as modeled by 

Jesus Christ in His 33 years on earth. Volume I contains six sessions that explore the basic 

foundations of authentic manhood and God's clear design for men. 

MEN’S GROUP

A Man and His Story 

Dates: June 8 - July 13 

Every man's life tells a "story." In the pursuit of “Authentic Manhood,” every man must 

understand and come to grips with the defining moments and key relationships that have 

shaped his unique "story." This series provides men with biblical perspective of their "story." It 

equips them to embrace how their past has affected their present and prepares them to deal 

with whatever the future may hold. In a Man and His Story, both experts and regular guys will 

help men learn from their past, come alive in their present and enjoy God's best in the future. 

A Man and His Traps 

Dates: September 7 - October 12 

A Man and His Traps challenges and equips men to go below the surface, to look deep into 

their hearts and explore some areas that are all too easy to ignore but that are critical in their 

journey toward “Authentic Manhood.” It introduces a framework and a process that will help men 

understand what lies behind the manhood traps and beneath the heart idols that can distract 

them from the truth and the power of the Gospel. Then it unfolds a biblical battle plan that helps 

men replace specific temptations and struggles with God's better promises.

The Friends of Jesus 

Dates: February 2 - March 8 

In our everyday lives, friends are the people whom we spend the most time with, go through 

struggles with at times, and who know us best. Each of Jesus’ friends—Peter, John, Matthew, 

Judas, Mary Magdalene, and Lazarus—traveled with Jesus and were part of His daily ministry, 

and each has a compelling story to tell. There were some who would question or doubt Him…and 

one would even betray Him. Emotionally powerful, thought-provoking, and soulful, The Friends of 

Jesus will help you to appreciate the Bible and understand how it applies to your relationships 

with the most important people in your life. 

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy With God in the Busyness 

of Life (Part 1) 


An invitation for every woman who feels she isn't godly enough...isn't loving enough...isn't doing 

enough. The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the 

New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet...but the daily demands of a busy 

world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet 

you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Part 1 chapters 1-6. 

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy With God in the Busyness

The Sacred Search (8 weeks) 

Dates: October 5 - November 30 

What if you stopped looking for a “soul mate” and started looking for a “sole mate” – someone

but making a wise choice so you can better serve the One who loves you most? 


His Needs, Her Needs (6 weeks) 

Dates: January 6 - February 10 

For over twenty-five years, His Needs, Her Needs has been transforming marriages all over the 

world. This life-changing book is the basis for an interactive, six-week study designed for use in 

couples’ small groups or retreats, premarital counseling sessions or by individual couples. 

5 Love Languages (8 weeks) 


True love is not a myth, but it takes work. Making sure that the one you love feels loved requires 

commitment, understanding, and effective communication.

Marriage the way God intended it to be, is a true art form. In “The Art of Marriage”, we weave 

together biblically-centered teaching, real-life stories, humorous vignettes, and more to portray 

both the challenges and the beauty of God’s design. 

The Good Fight (4 weeks) 

Dates: August 3 - August 24 

Every couple fights. In fact, successful couples disagree just as much as couples who don't go 

the distance. But a mountain of research shows what separates happy from not-so-happy 

marriages: they know how to resolve conflict. Happy couples have learned how to use 

disagreement to deepen their connection. With innovative, real-life ideas that work, The Good 

Fight will help you turn the most painful moments of your marriage into milestones that mark a 

deeper joy and a greater passion for each other.

come.

Senior’s Life Group 

The Senior Saints Ministry at Sugar Creek Church of Christ is a group of mature adults 

whose purpose is to magnify Christ by developing a meaningful fellowship and to 

strengthen the church in service. The Seniors are not only focused on ministry to mature 

adults, but ministry through and with them as well. It is certainly true, among Senior 

saints as much as it is among other adult groups that adulthood is a journey, not a 

destination.

DivorceCare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one 

of life’s most difficult experiences. Don’t go through separation or divorce alone.

Financial Peace University 

Dates: January 6 - March 3 and October 6 - December 9 

We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It 

teaches God's ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and 

interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where 

you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of 

debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more

Parenting the Early Years (4 weeks) 

Dates: January 30 - March 5 and September 3 - October 8 

What Kind of Parent Do You Want To Be? Who you are matters more than what you do. 

When your kids are all grown up, how will they remember you? In reality TV style, take a 

sneak peek at real-life parenting moments and vulnerable questions from 20 families. As 

a Bible study, discover 10 Biblical traits that will make you a better person and a better 

parent. Then begin to intentionally pass on key traits to your kids. 

Parenting Your Teenager (4 weeks) 

Dates: April 9 - April 30 and July 9 - July 30 

Identity questions. Emotional turmoil. Rebellion. Welcome to the teenager's world. And if 

you're their parent, you're already in that mix. It's a tough job, you know, and you've got 

to do it. Nowadays, you have to play counselor, cop, and crisis manager all rolled into 

one. Good parenting means using your head, your heart, and your faith. Parenting Your 

Teenager equips moms and dads to recognize common patterns, plan effective 

strategies, and build character.
