Calendar of Events
Over a year ago, we began having conversations about the unique and
vibrant culture at Sugar Creek. Our discussions focused primarily on our
growth and areas we sought to protect. We then took a closer looked at
our congregation demographically, socially and spiritually. What we found
was not only amazing and honoring, but worthy of High Praise!
We discovered five key areas that exemplify our culture at Sugar Creek.
We value Biblical Authority in our preaching and teaching; Intimacy with
God in our prayer life and personal study; Intentional Evangelism within
our family and workplace; Strategic Service in our community and
Relevant Ministries that meet our needs.
Our values are seen and celebrated when new converts obey the gospel
and reach their maturity milestones. They are seen when our young
people engage in meaningful ministry and adults graduate into the
academy. We see such moments when singles, seniors, married couples
and Yokefellows experience deep fellowship. We are a group of
Christians whose lives are being transformed for Christ and by Christ and
this is what High Praise seeks to capture and celebrate each quarter.
This quarter we are pleased to feature a couple that has given
themselves to a life of service and Christian excellence. Over 41 years
ago, God placed his hands on a young couple that has exemplified the
core vales we celebrate in High Praise. It was through Bro. Chislom's
bold and humble leadership that Sugar Creek became the place it is
today.
On a personal level Bro. Chislom, has been a great friend, mentor and a
father in the faith to me. He has taught me to teach and preach God’s
Word out of delight and not duty. I will never forget some of his classic
sermons. He preached a sermon entitled, "The Calling of Samuel." It was
this message from God that pricked my 17-year-old heart and led me into
the ministry. The true genius of Bro. Chislom was seen in his creation of
his "SOS Charts." Through him, God has led hundreds, if not thousands,
to Christ through his teaching method.
Finally, I want to thank Bro. Chislom for entrusting me with the leadership
of this church. It is through his example that our vision “to raise the next
generation of Christian leaders" was first realized. I want to thank his
lovely wife for modeling Christian dedication, graciousness and
giftedness. As a woman of indelible influence, Sis. Chislom understands
the shining values that make Sugar Creek a remarkable place.
When their earthly course is completed, I believe this will be the legacy of
Bro. David Chislom and Sis. Sandra Chislom: they labored by the grace
of God to leave us with a vision of God. On behalf of your entire Sugar
Creek Family, we say thank you for nearly a half-century of service to
The paralyzing effects of
Fear
P s a l m 4 7 : 1
has never been more understood as we at
Sugar Creek shout to God with loud sounds
of joy. This first quarter of the year Sugar
Creek welcomed 11 new converts into the
body of Christ while 2 new members have
placed membership with our congregation.
This Valentine’s Day Sugar Creek celebrated the union of two special
couples:
John and Lurlean Spencer (pictured left)
and
Nickolas and Jamia Chislom (pictured below),
who bound themselves together in perfect unity.
It is a fact that fear
robs us of
abundant living in
all areas of life!
Fearful emotions are unhealthy
to the body – triggering
sickness and disease! In
reality, fear is just “false
evidence appearing real!!!”
II Tim 1:7: For God gave us not
a spirit of fear, but of power and
love and self-control.
Rev 21:8: But the cowardly, the
unbelieving (NIV)… But the
fearful, and unbelieving (KJV)…
But to the timid, the unbelievers
(Aramaic Bible)…
“…abominable, murderers,
sexually immoral, sorcerers,
idolaters, and all liars shall have
their part in the lake which
burns with fire and brimstone,
which is the second death.”
not our strength but His
strength that increases our
faith.
Proverbs teaches that wisdom
is the principle thing, but above
all get an understanding! Fear
is planted in our minds by
Satan. It is what we do with that
Satanic seed which takes
discipline consistently!!! We
must speak to ourselves as
Jesus spoke to Satan, “get
behind me.” Fear manifests
itself the following ways: afraid
of the dark, afraid to worship,
afraid of people, afraid of
rejection, afraid of persecution,
afraid of hard work and
success, afraid to love and be
loved, etc. Make your list of
fears and replace each one with
faithful actions. Ask someone
spiritual to assist you with this
exercise if needed. There is no
time like the present to totally
surrender to God all thoughts,
habits, and hang-ups! Faith
and fear cannot co-exist, just as
light and darkness cannot! Our
actions are the true measure of
our faith or our fear! Heb 11:6:
“Without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE
to please God.” God can’t use
cowards in His army!
a n d e v e r y
LOOK at the beginning of the
verse… the FEARFUL are the
first load! Why? God sent
His only Son… and after the
resurrection of His Son… how
can we allow fear to paralyze
us? It is a lack of belief and
understanding! Phil 4:13 I
CAN… but our actions say I
WON’T do all things… So it is
Tips for Clear Health Communication
Ask Questions
Take family/friend to doctor visits to help you understand
Make a list of your health concerns to tell the doctor
Take a list of all medicines or bring to your visit.
Ask your pharmacist for help with medical questions
An Anointing
words are my religion
the Word is my religion
His Word is my religion
my spirituality is given
By the spirit of forgiveness
His love is the essence of me
and unequivocally, I am fed
By His grace.
I am a woman.
A silhouette in the sunrise of
A black woman.
Dissected into segments of
Yet, my foot shall not slip in
He created me, nocturnally,
To be free.
And I pray His will, like the
Engaging a
Godly Spirit
Research shows that
people prefer medical
information that is easy to
read and understand
regardless of their
reading level. Health
literacy is the ability to
read and understand
health information and
services needed to make
appropriate health
decisions.
In fact, if you lack
knowledge about your
medical condition, how
can you determine if you
are getting the proper
treatment? Every time
you talk with your doctor,
nurse, or pharmacist ask
questions to better
understand your health. It
is your right to know and
take charge of your
healthcare needs!
Annual check ups with
your doctor is a great time
to learn about your
health, risks and to
discuss treatment
options. Request copies
of your labs so you can
see for yourself what is
considered “good”/
“normal” or “bad”/
”abnormal”. Always,
always, always ask
questions because you
are ultimately
responsible for you!
Ask Yourself…
1. What is my main
problem?
2. What do I need
to do?
3. Why is it
important for me
to do this?
Ask Questions when…
1. You see your
doctor, nurse, or
pharmacist
2. You prepare for a
medical test or
procedure.
3. You get your
medicine
I bask in His presence -
rightly dividing myself.
The wind that blows through
the trees
reflect the simplicity of His
love.
I am moved.
towards redeeming light.
My poetry, is the salvation I’ve
found in His sight
Beautiful is this perfect and
infinite love
Serenity found in the sea of
His glory
It pours over me
I lift up my eyes
I see and I am seen
My Awakening
It wasn't that long ago
For I can still remember
existing
In my season-less world
Withering in despair
Far from peace
Far from hope
Waiting for my chance
Waiting for my change
For my hopes to be stirred!
Then suddenly as quick
As a sparrow could flutter its
wings,
The yoke of evil was broken
And the promises of God
Swept me off my feet
To higher ground
Now I rise
Now I stand
Hallelujah
O what a day!
Unspoken Words With the
Volume of Power
Let there Be…And there Was…It
was Good
Silence is Golden… Dead Silence
Our spirit speaks loudly without
words, but our souls respond
quietly to the words delivery.
Words hurt but words heal
Words start and words stop
Words create and words destroy
Words motivate and words hinder
Silence confirms but silence is
void
Silence speaks louder than words
but it is so quiet
In the beginning there was silence
God spoke and the words of
power created, still exist, and will
never die.
The Sugar Creek Singles kicked off
The study for evening, delivered
by Sis. Tiffany Garner and Bro.
your season of singleness and
delighting yourself in the Lord. We had a
full house complete with guests who
aren’t members of the church, but
desiring to hear more of God’s powerful
word! A great time has been had by all
this quarter as we work to bring souls to
Christ!
Marriage Ministry
~Dr. R. Cox, 1999
The Reddig's hosted the February
Marriage Ministry activity. The
event began with a delicious 20-
item taco/burrito buffet. Couples
participated in a devotional that
encouraged them to reflect on what
God would have them do to
improve their relationship with their
spouse. Each person listed their
spouse’s needs, identified obstacles
that stand in the way of providing
those needs, and wrote a plan to
meet those needs. We observed,
interpreted, and applied Ecclesiastes
4:9-12 which reads, “Two are
better than one, because they have a
good return for their labor: If either
of them falls down, one can help the
other up. But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they
will keep warm. But how can one
keep warm alone? Though one may
be overpowered, two can defend
themselves. A cord of three strands
is not quickly broken.”
Through our work, we agreed that
marriage is work, but we must be
willing to labor together. When one
or both spouses become unraveled,
God is the third cord that keeps the
marriage
together
until it is
mended
again. In
fact, two
cold
flints can
still
produce a
spark!
Lastly, all of the couples competed
against each other in a number of
"Minute to Win It" games. In the
games the couples had one minute
win while trying to bounce pencils
into 8 drinking glasses, picking up
five Ziti noodles using only a
spaghetti noodle in their mouth,
catching ping pong balls using
sticky lint
rollers, and
stacking four lip
balms using only
chopsticks.
The group was
well fed
physically and
spiritually and
the fellowship
was enjoyed by
all!
2013 Youth Explosion!
The 4 th annual class of the
Disciple Makers Academy
graduated on Sunday, February
17, 2013. The class of bible
scholars (shown below) spent
26 weeks studying through the
bible, learning bible and church
history and applying it to their
daily lives in the 21 st century.
The course covers content such
as Christian evidence and the
gospel message, Jewish customs,
church organization, acts of
conversion, world religion, and
“The key objective …is to
develop critical skills for
spreading the gospel.”
denominational studies. It also
covers the New Testament
church, the performance of
miraculous gifts and signs, and
methods of evangelism. The key
objective of the course is to
develop critical skills for
spreading the gospel message as
instructed by Christ and
winning souls. To do this,
graduates of the Disciple
Makers Academy should
develop a solid foundation in
the word of God for purposeful
living and to defend the faith.
Class of 2013 Valedictorian,
Bianca McClure, stated that it is
“thanks to the Disciple Makers
Academy I am better equipped
to actively save souls! I want to
personally encourage everyone
to take this spiritually enriching
course!”
This MLK Weekend the Sugar Creek youth
celebrated the power of dreaming big and doing
big as they traveled to Atlanta, Ga for the 2013
Book
Review
Have you ever desired to have
a deeper connection with your
friends, family, co-workers, or
significant other? No matter
what stage in life we are in, we
can all benefit from improving
the quality of our relationships.
Throughout the bible it speaks
of the importance of love and
Have you met… The Bakers?
Daren and Susana Baker joined the
Sugar Creek family bringing along their
two daughters; Darena, a kind hearted 6-
year-old whom is best described as
generously giving beyond her age and
Theresa a sassy 4-year-old whose
favorite movie is the lion king and says
that she loves all of the lions equally,
even Mufasa!
Daren and Susana have a unique
story. Daren, who was raised in the
church of Christ, was baptized January
2005 in his hometown of Charleston,
SC. Seeing a man who was persistent
and devoted in pursuit of a relationship
with Christ, Susana saw love beyond
worldly expectations, but love that gave
glory to God.
human relationships. God also
commands us to love one
another because God first
loved us (I John 19-21).
However, as Christians, we
know that it is not always easy
to love one another as
unconditionally as Christ loved
us. God made each one of us
differently and therefore we are
likely to give and receive love
differently.
In the book, The Five Love
Languages, the author Dr. Gary
Chapman describes five ways
to express love, which he calls
the five love languages.
Written from a Christian
perspective, Dr. Chapman
explains how each one of us
has a primary love language
that we identify with more
naturally. Dr. Chapman
explains how learning to speak
one another’s primary love
language can greatly enhance
our relationships whether it’s
with family, friends, co-workers
or a significant other. Although
this edition focuses primarily on
By. Sis. Angela Gay
Singles, the five love
languages can be applied at
any stage in one’s life. It can
also be a valuable tool for
single or married ministries in
the church.
In the Five Love Languages,
Dr. Chapman shares real life
stories of individuals and their
journey to discover the primary
love languages of the people in
their lives. Through their
stories you will see how
relationships were mended and
blossomed as they learned to
speak one another’s love
language. The stories brought
many “Aha” moments of selfdiscovery
for myself and
inspired me to take inventory of
my personal relationships. I
pray that you will also take the
challenge of self-discovery and
explore The Five Love
Languages for yourself or
special person in your life. I
know it will bless your life as it
has mine.
Upon moving to Charlotte, NC and
visiting Sugar Creek, Susana stated,
“when we came, it just felt right; being
apart of a military family has been hard
because you feel alone. In the Church of
Christ I don’t feel alone, I have a feeling
of family.”
On January 15, 2013 Susana was
baptized into the body of Christ and
Daren placed membership with Sugar
Creek. Together they look forward to
growing stronger as a family and a
couple in Christ with the knowledge that
the only way to do that is to make God
the centerpiece of their household.
Youth
Corner
We know the first step
towards becoming a
Christian is baptism, but
that step can be really
hard! People think of
every reason in the world
to not be baptized. They
just got their hair done.
Their family wouldn't
approve or they want
their family to be there. I
need to talk to my pastor.
I need to talk to my
family. I have already
been baptized. Acts
22:16 states, "And now
why are you waiting?
Arise and be baptized,
and wash away your sins,
calling on the name of the
Lord.’" The time is now
because you don't know
what tomorrow will bring
or what will happen when
you walk out of church.
Baptism is not something
that can be taken lightly.
You have to take part in it
for the right reasons. You
can't get baptized
because you see your
friends doing it or to
please your parents. You
have to do it because you
have the desire to turn
your life around and to
walk with Jesus and to
share the Gospel.
So, for those of you who
have already taken that
first step, congratulations!
Just remember this race
is not for the swift, but for
the steadfast. There are
going to be some hurdles/
rough patches along the
way but know that there
are people cheering for
you. If you haven't taken
that first step, just
remember, tomorrow is
not promised and there
are people willing and
able to answer any
questions you have.
Six Tips for Raising a
Successful Child
1
Give Clear Directions
When you communicate with your child be
very clear and direct with your words.
Children often operate from a concrete way
of thinking. This means they function
best when they know exactly what is
expected of them. For example: Instead of
saying, “Go clean up your room” you might
say, “Go pick up the toys in your room
and put them in your toy box”.
3
Ignore Attention Seeking Behaviors
Children thrive on the reactions of their
parents. Unfortunately, some children enjoy
engaging in behavior that solicits a negative
reaction from their parents. Sometimes
it can be very effective to ignore unacceptable
behavior. If the goal is to have your child
engage in acceptable behavior then that is the
behavior you should respond to. When parents
react to positive behaviors vs. negative
behaviors, children will be prompted to
display the behavior that solicits a
reaction most often.
Encourage Problem Solving
Life can be full of troubles and difficult
situations. When children are given the tools to
work through problems it helps them build
positive self-esteem and confidence. Children
By Danielle Coleman
will eventually grow up to be adults.
If children are not given an opportunity to work
out problems now, they won’t know
how to deal with them when they are older.
2
Offer Choices
Having choices helps children develop
skills to be independent and mature.
However, it is important to make sure that
the choices are limited and not too
overwhelming. For example: David may
find that choosing only one toy at the toy
store to be tremendously difficult.
However, if David where given a choice
between two toys it may be easier for him
to make a decision.
4
Compromise
Seeking a middle ground is a healthy way to
stay connected with your child. It is
important that parents remember that
children are people too. Children have their
own personalities, likes and dislikes. When
parents work with children to find a
solution it can be a win-win situation for
everybody.
6
Structure the Environment
Always remember... You are the
parent! You make the final decisions in
your home. It is a BIG, but awesome job to
be responsible for another human being.
Parents, set the tone for the family. When
parents take control of their homes it helps
children feel safe and protected. Children
desire disciple although, you may never
hear them ask for it. Children are more
successful in life when they are raised in
safe and nurturing environments with
clear limits and boundaries.
Bro. David T. Chislom, The Man Who Answered the Call
“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an
answer, it sings because it has a song.”
~ Maya Angelou
Written by Sis. Angela Gay
Dr. David T. Chislom is a man with a
profound and beautiful song. His perspective is
founded in his love for Christ and carrying out
His work. Though Bro. Dave, as he prefers to be
called by brethren, is an accomplished man he
remains humble as he answers the call to
minister to others. He is an author, a former
educator, counselor, and college administrator;
however, Bro Dave finds that his greatest joy
has been establishing a ministry that honors and
glorifies Christ as the head of His church.
Although he has received numerous accolades it
is not these accomplishments that define him; it
is his relationship and hope in Christ, which
inspires him towards excellence. He has been
driven by a deep desire to serve the world for
which Christ gave His life. His hope is that his
life is a display of faith by serving in a capacity,
which is a direct reflection of Christ’s love.
Although the congregation rarely sees it,
Bro. Dave considers himself shy. He states, “I
never wanted it to be me. I wanted it to be us;
me and God.” He says, “it’s not easy to open
my mouth to represent God’s words, but I trust
the Lord totally and my trust in God is what I
am the most joyful and happiest about in my life.
I believe that if you follow His scripture you can
never go wrong.”
Proverbs 3:5 reads “trust in the LORD with
all your heart, and lean not on your own
understanding.” This scripture serves as not
only a favorite, but the focal point for Bro.
Dave’s life of ministry.
First influenced into the Christian faith by
his mother, Sis. Irene Solomon. “My mother,”
he exclaims, “is my world” and for him, has
always been a major, primary, and lasting focal
point in his life. As Bro. Dave reflected back to
one of his most powerful experiences, which
changed the course of his life, he couldn’t help,
but recall his mother being an important part of
that moment.
At the age of seven years old, Bro. Dave had
the opportunity to hear 19 th century pioneer
preacher, Bro. Marshall Keeble, preach a
sermon, “There’s Water in the Plan.” It was a
simple sermon on baptism, yet in its simplicity it
was powerful. Amazed, young David Chislom
was moved to want to learn and do more for the
sake of Christ. “Bro. Keeble,” he says, “had a
magnetic way about himself, he was a simple
man, but he would preach for two hours and I
always wanted more. We would be outside in a
tent and Bro. Keeble would be preaching to an
audience of about 90% white boys […] my
mother would be there coddling me, keeping me
warm.”
It was in fact, his mother who
accompanied him on the preaching circuit.
When he was 11 years old she wrote his
first sermon, which he memorized.
However, when he stood in front of his
audience he froze. He stated, “That was one
of the scariest moments of my life as I
sensed the gravity of that action. I
experienced culture shock and I didn’t know
whether to run or cry, but I knew both
would probably be unacceptable.” He
forgot every word, including his subject.
“My mother,” he continues, “was wise and
brought a copy of my speech with her.
Afterwards, I received some support and
some criticism. Though, I wasn’t ready for
criticism my mother taught me to not take it
personally, but to put it in perspective.”
That moment defined his life. Bro. David
Chislom did not just want to be a minister,
but he wanted to be the best minister so he
went on the attend the National Christian
Institute and continued to further his
education receiving advanced degrees at
many notable colleges and universities.
“God led me to minister” Bro. Dave
humbly states. By the time he was fourteen
years old, he was going on the greyhound to
preach in house churches and small
congregations in Alabama and LaFayette,
GA. However, nothing stood out to him
more than one experience he had preaching
with Bro. Keeble. At age thirteen, Bro.
Dave didn’t have the amount of money he
needed for his tuition and Bro. Keeble made
a unique offer. Bro. Dave only needed to
preach the message before Bro. Keeble
preached his own. In the year of 1965, when
race relations were still explosive and civil
rights activists were still working to end
racial segregation after the passage of Jim
Crow‘s “separate but equal treatment” laws;
and only two years after the Birmingham,
AL. church bombing, Bro. Dave,
confidently, took the stage and preached to
a congregation of approximately 2,000
white men. Even as a young man, Bro.
David Chislom answered the call and
helped transform a world challenged by
deep-rooted racial prejudices and
stigmatizations by believing in and
faithfully speaking God’s powerful word.
A “Hard Fighting Solider” he is called
by many, Bro. Dave has embraced this
adage. “I never wanted to go into the
military,” he says, “but I accepted and
embraced being a fighting solider
according to the scripture.” Some of Bro.
Dave’s memorable experiences have been
in service of the Lord, entering into
hostile places to preach the gospel. The
stories are endless as he recounts entering
Holiness churches, preaching and
teaching Muslims, and entering into
Pentecostal territories. Physically
accosted, all for sake of fulfilling the great
commission given by Christ in Matthew
28:16-20, to preach and teach the word of
God. A slight smile crosses his face as he
says, “It was never my intention to be
harmed, but there is no higher reward
than being able to experience persecution
for the sake of Christ and the opportunity
to suffer for Christ.” Furthermore, “it
makes you have to ‘put your money where
your mouth is’ to show yourself not
fearing any man.”
The ministry requires great balance for
a man like Bro. Dave. He describes
himself as a very conscientious child, a
classic good-boy with a lifestyle that was
dictated by roots in Christian faith. He’s
always held a very pragmatic point of
view and says that the ministry has given
him a mirror to see himself as God sees
him. Even when he thought he would
leave the ministry upon his transition to
Charlotte, NC he realized that God had
other plans for his life. Therefore, his
ambitions led him to go to God in prayer
with a simple plea. If he were to continue
in the ministry he prayed God’s will
would be done by establishing a new
ministry. Thusly, God made it possible for
Bro. Dave to start his own work with the
Sugar Creek Church of Christ while also
providing for his family.
Family is his core. May 25, 2013, Bro.
Dave and his wife, Sis. Sandra will
celebrate their 40 th wedding anniversary.
“My wife,” he says with a laugh, “didn’t
know she would marry a preacher, but
she has been with me and supported me
every step. My objective was always to
ensure that my family was secure so that
my boys (Jason and Nickolas) did not
have the same experience that I had with
my father.” In fact, Bro. Dave’s work
with his family and his church family has
been reflective of his Father in Heaven,
offering faith as the centerpiece for every
relationship. He says, “It is faith,
that is the central focal point of
success in a Christian life. If you
have faith you can always find hope
and the ministry offers opportunities
to demonstrate faith daily.”
Presently, Bro. Dave is very
passionate about retirement. He has
been very goal oriented and his life
in the ministry and in career has
been focused on rescuing people.
The driving force of his work is
about helping people and his
objective has been to win souls for
Christ. He recalls “I remember we
baptized 300 people in one year.”
He said, at first, Parkinson’s led him
to believe that his work was done
because only God could touch him
in the parts in which he has been
affected, but Bro. Dave is still
inspired daily by God’s majesty.
In retirement, Bro. Dave is
looking for greater peace of mind
and a new perspective. Retirement,
for him, has a “certain gratification
and contentment, it is looking at life
and saying ‘well done.’” As he
moves from the pulpit to the front
pew as Minister Emeritus, Bro.
Dave seeks to encourage and will
still counsel those who seek such
from him, but his new goal is to rest
and be inspired and motivated by
the Lord. His views on today is that
the world is what it is because it has
always been what it is. Life on earth
is not meant to be the pleasant place
we think it is. As according to
Ecclesiastes 1:4-5 (NIV)
“Generations come and generations
go, but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun sets, and
hurries back to where it rises.” In
fact a writer once wrote, “If you
want to be reminded of the love of
the LORD, just watch the sunrise
(Jeannette Walls).” Many will agree
that Bro. David Chislom has been a
sunrise in numerous lives,
illuminating darkness and spilling
over with the love of Christ so that
we can all move towards the beauty
of God’s sunset.
