Welcome to the 2016 Revelation Perth 

International Film Festival. It’s taken us some 

time to get here, putting together our biggest 

instalment yet. 

Whether it’s the riots of All Things Ablaze, the 

slipstream sci-fi of High-Rise, the disjointed 

families of Der Bunker, Little Sister and 

Aaaaaaaah! the contemplative calm of All the 

Time in the World, Invention and Ettrick, the 

rock and metal of Wacken or the humour of My 

Scientology Movie and The Art of the Prank 

– there’s all forms of cinema celebrated here, 

as well as a dedicated session of indigenous 

works, a showcase from South America, the 

return of IFFA, and Revelation’s use of PICA to 

present work by Mike Kelley and State Library 

of Western Australia to screen Jim Henson’s 

Muppets, and much, much more besides.

Looking at films for this edition of Rev has 

been the most amazing experience. 

The kinds of films and the mood of them 

has clearly changed in the last 12months. 

There’s been a major shift internationally to 

the symphonic and explosion of cinema that 

experiments...that’s why this year’s program is 

just so big! In fact we’ve managed to somehow 

squeeze even more titles into the program for 

your viewing pleasure. 

For those wanting to explore the deep audiovisual 

textures of this vanguard of new cinema 

I can’t recommend highly enough the very, 

very lovely films Paths of the Soul, Dead Slow 

Ahead, Invention and The Whispering Star 

they are utterly unique...but with all the most 

excellent titles on offer, how can I choose my 

favourite child? 

To cope with demand and desire for the first 

time we’ve added a three-day Rev Rewind 

component that will bust out some of the most 

popular films in the program for the three days 

after our official program has ended...but we 

of course won’t know them until well into our 

primary screening program.

Davis (Gyllenhall) is an extraordinarily successful business 

man with everything that he wants at his fingertips...except 

emotions...but he seems OK with that. 

Life isn’t going to let him off the hook that easily though and 

after a terrible accident a strange kind of long distance pen-pal 

relationship emerges between him and a young woman on the 

other end of his letters to a vending machine company - one of 

whose machines refused to give him a candy bar in a hospital. 

It’s really quite lovely as we see things unfold and as Davis’ 

communications become more and more and unintentionally 

personal and poetic, but this poetry is still kept well hidden. 

That is until Davis’ long stifled feelings fight to come to the 

surface in always surprisingly deadpan and honest ways. 

Great performances all round, tons of humour and small 

moments filled with surprises throughout, Demolition is very 

much Vallee’s film and as such is directed with clarity and 

precision. 

On Thursday 7th, join us for our famous after party where the 

drinks will flow, the food will be plentiful and the waxings will 

be spun well into the evening. And if that wasn’t enough our 

special friends from the Menagerie Choir will also be making 

a special appearance which is bound to bring a smile to your

In 2005 multimedia-artist Mike Kelley was commissioned by 

Artangel to produce a site-specific artwork. His response was 

to create a replica of his childhood home in the Detroit suburb 

of Westland, the façade of which was driven from the Museum 

of Contemporary Art, Detroit, to Westland, on a route that 

took the artwork along Michigan Avenue and back again. 

In Mobile Homestead, a three part video work, Kelley, 

documents this journey and the changing social and cultural 

geographies on Michigan Avenue. By including interviews 

conducted on route with those who live or work alongside 

the road, including strip-club dancers, church officials, and 

representatives of the Ford Motor Company, among many 

others, the work offers snapshot portraits of the city and its 

inhabitants. 

This video trilogy opens with a celebration of the launch of 

Mobile Homestead and features poet John Sinclair, alongside 

community leaders, as well as numerous musicians and bands 

representing the cultural diversity of the suburbs the façade 

passed through. 

The work was premiered in 2012 at the Whitney Biennial, New 

York, and has screened at Site Gallery, Sheffield, and the Tate 

Modern, London.

MOCAD, LUMA Foundation and Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts with the 

generous support of the Artangel International Circle.

The West Australian Screen Awards (WASAs) is the premier 

celebration of West Australian screen culture, celebrating 

excellence and achievements in feature film, short film, web 

series, music videos, television production, documentary, 

games and interactive productions. 

The 2016 WASAs will be a red carpet gala awards ceremony 

held at the prestigious Heath Ledger Theatre at the State 

Theatre Centre of Western Australia on Monday 4 July 2016, 

as a grand opening to the Revelation Perth International Film 

Festival. 

Former WASA winners include some of Australia’s most 

prominent screen practitioners such as Nelson Woss (Red 

Dog), Elissa Down (The Black Balloon), Zak Hilditch (These 

Final Hours), James Bogle (Lockie Leonard, The Circuit, Closed 

for Winter), Sue Taylor (The Tree, Last Train to Freo), Myles 

Pollard (Drift) as well as a who’s who of the next generation of 

household names including Lauren Elliott, Ben Young, Emilia 

Jolakoska, Antony Webb and seasoned professionals including 

Kim Lord, Laurie Silvestren, and Torstein Dyrting.

For over two decades one of the most exciting national cinemas has been that of Iran. One of 

Rev’s most popular events, IFFA returns with a program showcasing the strength and quality of 

films from this otherwise troubled country.

As part of her divorce Nahid has retained custody of her son, 

conditional upon her not remarrying. However she does want to 

remarry, but Nahid (Sareh Bayat) knows that her former husband 

will certainly challenge the custody. In the meantime, life continues 

– among her other problems are her elderly bedridden mother and 

the growing disobedience of her young son. Temporary marriage 

seems like the solution but it just adds more problems.

mother, an old horse. Although the daughter is already married, 

her father manipulates her into continuing to live with him.

Based on Anton Chekhov’s short story Sorrow, this film takes the 

narrative a step further to explore the inner world of a selfish man 

overtaken by self-pity.

Manouchehr still insists on going to work at the Iranian Tobacco 

Company, although he has retired long ago. When his mother 

passes away, he embarks on a journey to Tehran to find an old 

childhood friend. But on arrival he checks into a hotel staffed by 

eccentrics. He is finally in his element...

It’s a minimal, poetic story that addresses the human condition 

with subtle and laconic humour. This strong (and charming) 

debut feature, which won the Netpac award at IFFA in 2015, is 

anchored by a strong lead performance from famous poet Shams 

e Lageroodi.

Bita, a divorce lawyer, (played by Leila Hatami), takes on a case 

which turns out to be against her own husband (Shahab Hosseini), 

although she is unaware of this initially. A complex web of lovers 

and ex lovers constellating round the struggling marriage of Bita 

and her husband, combined with an unwanted pregnancy and 

the desire for revenge, is woven into a tightly scripted film. A box 

office hit in Iran. 

AVALANCHE (BAHMAN)

Homa, a very experienced nurse is assigned a 10-day night shift 

to take care of an unpleasant old woman while her son, the owner 

of the clinic, is away. A huge snowstorm hits Iran and clogs the 

city, effectively closing it down which her mindscape begins to 

mirror. As the nights go by, she has increasing trouble sleeping. 

The stress of her insomnia and building personal issues come to 

a head during the crisis within the city. Fatimeh Motamed Arya’s 

performance has been described as “sublime”, and saw her 

nominated for best actress at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. 

I AM DIEGO MARADONA (MAN DIEGO MARADONA HASTAM)

I am Diego Maradona rotates around the domestic problems of 

two married sisters who are now situated in very different social 

circles and economic levels. One couple tries to hash out what 

actually went wrong, as the surrounding family members point 

fingers at one another. Tension builds as all of their other problems 

seem to bubble to the surface at the same time. This masterfully 

directed and award-winning ensemble brims with charm and 

cinematic ingenuity, is a very black comedy.

With its recent world premiere at Venice, this marks Gabriel 

Mascaro as the leading figure in a burgeoning new wave 

movement coming out of Recife in Brazil’s north-east. The story 

centres on Iremar who works as a vaqueiro wrangling bulls on 

the tough, macho rodeo circuit, but each evening swinging from 

the hammock in the back of the truck, Iremar’s head is filled 

with dreams of pattern cutting, sequins and exquisite fabrics as 

he mentally assembles his latest sexy fashion designs. Will this 

be a case of Strictly Bullroom, or will our hero achieve his frock 

dreaming?

Run-down rehearsal rooms along the halls of the Grand 

Theatre of Havana, Amanda and Viengsay dedicate themselves 

wholeheartedly to the demanding routine their discipline requires 

of them: that of classical ballet. Their every step and aspiration 

echo the great achievements of their predecessor, Alicia Alonso, 

the prima ballerina assoluta, still invincible even at the grand age 

of 90.

Join the party as Super-8ers weave their celluloid magic to this 

year’s theme of GIFT and Revel-8 celebrates its 10th Birthday! 

It’s filmmaker-meets-composer-meets-audience all over again in 

REV’s unique image-music small gauge filmfest. 

Filmmaker challenge: shoot one reel of silent Super 8 film incamera 

lasting just 3 1/2 minutes. 

Composer challenge: compose and record a music soundtrack 

without even meeting the director. 

Audience challenge: cheer for your favourite film as you sit sideby-side 

with anxious filmmakers who haven’t seen or heard their 

films, and nervous composers who want to know if they’ve got it 

right! 

Prizes to be awarded on the night include Best Film, Best Music 

Soundtrack, Best Super 8 Cinematography and Audience Choice 

Award.

The Indigenous Community Stories (ICS) Program records and 

archives Indigenous oral histories and cultural expressions on 

film. The initiative aims to record and archive 100 stories of 

this generation of Elders, their families and communities, for 

future generations. ICS has created an invaluable anthology that 

contributes to Australia’s cultural identity. Stories include creation 

stories, art stories, music stories, station stories, and Stolen 

Generation stories from across Western Australia. . 

Told in first person, ICS films are important documents which 

reflect the diversity and layers of Aboriginal experiences in 

Western Australia. They have the capacity to connect us all as 

human beings. 

LAUREL NANNUP 

DOCUMENTARY, 13MINS

Laurel was born in 1943 at the Carrolup 

Native Settlement and grew up at Wandering 

Mission and the Pinjarra Reserve. She went 

on to study print-making at Curtin University 

and is now a highly regarded artist who 

recalls her childhood experiences through art. 

PAUL HANSEN (RIP) -

LOCATION: PERTH 

In 1970 Paul joined the Australian Royal Army 

Service and served in the Vietnam War. This is 

his story of survival and how he and his family 

coped with his post-traumatic stress disorder 

and journey of healing.

LOCATION: PILBARA-ROEBOURNE, 

MULGA DOWNS AND PERTH 

In 1947, Bigali aged 6 and her younger 

brother were stolen from their Yindjibarndi 

and Banjima families in the East Pilbara. 

Separated from her brother and sent to Sister 

Kates in Perth, this story celebrates Bigali’s 

remarkable but painful journey to reconnect 

with her family.

Cedric and his siblings were stolen whilst 

his parents were working picking grapes. 

He tells about the harsh life growing up at

In the late 1980’s, two Broome-based 

musicians broke new ground and formed an 

original multi-cultural band. Band members 

explain their creative and cultural influences 

and how Gunada became one of Broome’s

What’s better than a trilogy? A quadrilogy! For the fourth year, 

Magnolia’s Late Night Live IV: The Voyage Home returns to 

Revelation Film Festival to ask probing questions like “Which 

was better – Highlander IV: Endgame or The Next Karate Kid?”, 

“Will Jason Bourne continue the franchise magic?” and “Should 

Coppola have made a Godfather IV?” 

The lo-fi talk show that began in 2012 inside a North Perth 

backyard shed, Magnolia’s has travelled far and wide including 

all the way to shows for National Science Week (2013-2014) and 

Fringe World (2013-2016). Hosted by Tristan Fidler (RTRFM’s 

Movie Squad reviewer) with help from Matt Aitken (Paddle Clubb 

and Swamp Clubb) and “Jimmy’s Choice” (the show’s answer to 

Red Symons), Magnolia’s engages in fun, loose, and thoughtful 

conversations in front of an intimate audience. Past guests have 

included John Safran, Costa Georgiadis, Rachael Dease, Andrea 

Gibbs, Kirin J. Callinan, just to casually drop a few names there. 

Alongside such enlightening discussion, audience favourite 

segments are performed such as Amber’s Love Seat (musician 

Amber Fresh asks questions pertaining to love and romance) and 

Mystery Drinks (Nick Odell selects a drink for guests to taste and 

talk about). 

For this year’s Revelation Film Festival, Magnolia’s looks forward 

to chatting to visiting international guests as well as spending 

time with WA-based members of the film industry. For film buffs 

and casual viewers alike, smash your choc-bomb into your box 

of popcorn and strap yourselves in for a true 4-D experience.

MUPPETS, MUSIC & MAGIC: THE JIM HENSON LEGACY 

Jim Henson was one of the great independent artists of the international big and small screen. 

A great innovator and collaborator, Henson blazed a wholly individual trail through children’s TV, 

children’s features, science fiction and fantasy motion pictures, experimental cinema, animation, 

television commericals and much much more. This exhaustive tribute pays homage to this great 

moving image pioneer and dives into his work – famous and hidden – to uncover sides of Henson 

we’ve never seen, appreciated or understood.

This side of Henson rarely seen as we go deep within the vaults 

to explore his early work. It’s within them that we see the birth of 

many of the characters we know and love from The Muppets and 

Sesame Street but we also experience the abstract and unusual 

works produced as corporate training films, TV commercials, short 

films and all manner of other unexpected purposes. This program 

includes excerpts from experimental TV programs The Cube 

and Youth ‘68, and Time Piece, the 8-minute Oscar- nominated 

experimental masterpiece directed by (and starring) Jim Henson 

himself. 

Because of its more experiental nature content in this film is geared more at an adult 

audience than the other programs in this retropsective.

Henson was of course much more than a puppeteer – he was a 

complete entertainer. Cutting his teeth early with live performances for 

children in all manner of settings he learned quickly how important it 

was to keep rolling, keep popping and keep sparking. This compilation 

program looks at the development of some of his most famous 

creations such as Kermit, Rowlf the Dog, Ernie and the Swedish Chef 

from not just the earliest years of the characters but the earliest years 

of television.

Arguably Henson’s best-loved and influential body of work rests 

with Sesame Street and the unforgettable creations there-in. These

Oz, Fran Brill, and Caroll Spinney). This program is packed with rare

This combination of documentary clips, interviews and fantastic behind 

the scenes footage provides a rare glimpse into the science (and 

ambitious madness) behind the great puppetry works in Henson’s TV 

and feature film production. It’s a joy to watch the ensemble prepare 

and execute the behind the scenes choreography that make these 

unique characters come to life in a way that has made them such 

an important part of childhoods across the globe, across economic 

differences and across language and cultural divides.

For the uninitiated Labyrinth is quite the most unusual movie. 

Perhaps most famous for David Bowie’s turn as Gareth the Goblin 

King, it’s Henson’s large (and small) scale puppets that steal the 

show in a film that was very much a passion project for Henson.

Sarah is left home to babysit her younger brother whose incessant 

crying is getting more than a little irritating. In telling him a story 

she inadvertently conjures the Goblin King who steals the young 

boy. It’s her mission to penetrate the Goblin King’s world - the 

labyrinth - to retrieve her brother. In the process she encounters 

all manner of strange beings and beasts - all of whom spring from 

Henson’s incredibly fertile imagination. 

It’s hard not to admire the incredible detail in every shot here - as 

well as wonder at the almost psychedelic environment Henson 

places his characters in. It’s also impossible to resist some of the 

oddball humour as the characters exchange insults, quips of all 

kinds and a lot of verbal fencing that gives them such great life 

and character. 

On Sat 16th our special friends from the Menagerie Choir will 

entertain you pre-film with a special selection of Bowie tunes in 

delivered in their own fabulous style. 

THE DARK CRYSTAL 

DIR: JIM HENSON & FRANK OZ (1982/93MINS) 

Most certainly darker than any of his other feature film works the 

amazing puppets he created had a look all of their own and the 

animatronics that we see on screen were something especially 

groundbreaking. Much of this is explored in one of our other 

Henson programs - Jim Henson: Behind the Seams.

ERIN COATES 

Erin Coates is a Perth-based 

artist, curator and creative 

producer. A cross-disciplinary 

approach defines much of 

her practice and she has 

collaborated with engineers, 

architects, sound artists, scuba divers, parkour 

traceurs and members of remote indigenous 

communities. She has exhibited in significant 

Australian art institutions and her screenbased 

works have been shown in film festivals 

internationally. Erin holds a Masters degree in 

Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, 

Canada. 

AMY MARJORAM 

Amy Marjoram is a curator, 

artist, arts writer, and editor 

of the online photography 

and video art publication 

Excerpt Magazine. Amy has 

curated and co-curated video 

art exhibitions and has specific interests in videobased 

performance practice, internet art and the 

creative and cultural impact of screen-mediated 

living. Amy has written for many publications and 

has participated in exhibition selection panels for 

arts organisations around the country. She holds 

a Bachelor of Fine Art, Honours in Photomedia 

from Monash University. 

EMMA PENAZ EISNER 

Emma Penaz Eisner is a young 

filmmaker and artist from San 

Francisco, California, USA. In 

the past three years she has 

created critically-acclaimed 

short films that have screened worldwide at 

over 70 international film festivals and earned 

more than 30 awards. Her work is in stop motion 

animation, live action combined with animation, 

and experimental filmmaking. 

DR GRADY HANCOCK 

Dr. Grady Hancock is a 

lecturer in film and media at 

Deakin University and chair of 

Revelation Academic 2016. 

Her research areas include 

feminism and affect in local 

and independent film. 

ANDREW FROST 

Dr. Andrew Frost is a 

researcher in science fiction, 

cinema and contemporary 

art, the art critic for 

Guardian Australia and a 

lecturer in the Dept. Media, 

Music, Communications and Cultural Studies 

at Macquarie University, Sydney. He is the 

writer and presenter of more than a dozen 

documentaries on Australian contemporary art for 

ABC1 and is the director of My Space Program:

ANNE DEMY-GEROE 

Anne Démy-Geroe is 

an academic and film 

programmer. She currently 

teaches at Griffith Film school 

and is co-Director of the 

Iranian Film Festival Australia. 

She is an inaugural Nominations Council member 

of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and a Vice 

President of the Network for the Promotion 

of Asian Cinema. She was the Artistic Director 

of the Brisbane international Film Festival for

The Legend of Ben Hall. An avid animator in

Aaaaaaaah! appears almost like a classic British kitchen sink 

drama - with family disputes, relationship troubles, arguments,

Winter Bar-B-Que Movie, but really it’s its own wonderfully 

strange luminous beast. 

Through a very surreal chase of spying and surveillance, 

Catafuse, a dubiously dressed “creature”, hunts down specific 

human targets with the help of Molosstrap. But in a world 

completely run by the shadowy hands of the pharmaceutical 

industry, the lines of reality become so blurry and complex, 

that the mastering of insanity might just be the only way out... 

and I’m feeling insanity is just the right kind of word here. 

...which is the long way of saying this thing is so unusual we 

just can’t resist giving it the time it demands and hearing what 

you have to say - and this includes the short film.

her father, Dave (Steve Waddington, The Imitation Game), have 

moved to the small town of Bridgend, where he has taken a job 

as a police officer. 

But there is a darkness in the community following a number of 

unexplained youth suicides. While Dave investigates the suicides, 

teenager Sara befriends Jamie (Josh O’Connor, Cinderella) and 

his friends. 

These youths spend much of their time hanging around the 

woods near where a friend was found dead, and as Sara 

becomes drawn deeper into the psychological lives of her peers 

her father begins to worry about what may happen. 

The film draws upon real events and director and writer 

Ronde spent six years researching and interviewing people in 

the community while writing the script. All the young cast give 

exceptional standout performances creating a deeply affecting 

work.

Ben Wheatley (A Field In England, Kill List…) turns his unique 

talents on JG Ballard’s classic novel High-Rise. Alongside the 

author’s Crash and The Atrocity Exhibition (both of which have 

formed the basis for feature films), High-Rise helped define the 

new wave of British science fiction in the seventies. 

Dystopian and firmly rooted in contemporary culture, these 

books redefined the literary genre. Under Wheatley’s direction, 

with a perfect script from regular collaborator Amy Jump, the 

novel, once deemed ‘unfilmable’ becomes fully realised in this 

ambitious adaptation. 

High-Rise focuses on the inhabitants of a new tower block in 

the London commuter-belt as residents’ more primal urges 

start to emerge and civilization’s veneer begins to fade. As 

an increasingly primitive world erupts into the corridors 

and luxurious apartments everything starts to change. The 

ensemble cast, which includes Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons 

and Sienna Miller – deliver perfect performances, building on 

the unsettling material. 

The movie is essential viewing. Listen out also for the score, 

which includes a stunning version of ABBA’s SOS by Portishead.

Wheatley wades into the prescient 1975 text, delivering 

a complex, fluid interpretation which is respectful and 

almost faithful while still being its own beautiful, crazed

cannot pay the ransom despite facing violence and even death. 

Meanwhile as events unfold it becomes clear that those 

holding them captive also face problems. 

This rock-solid independent feature is incredibly taut and 

has its nerves right on the surface which make the film quite 

thrilling to watch and a real discovery for audiences. 

Driven by a powerful script and performances this is a film that 

creates a claustrophobic atmosphere and edge-of-the-seat 

drama which doesn’t let-up until the final credits roll. 

Kidnap Capital is a searing and powerful thriller.

From her apartment, in a suitably gothic house, she makes 

love potions and casts spells in her quest for true love. But her 

spells have the habit of working too well, and the men in her 

life soon become hapless victims. 

Playing with themes of female fantasy, sexuality, gender, 

lust, love, and masculinity in crisis, The Love Witch is a true 

pleasure to watch. 

Anna Biller’s luminescent visual palette, alongside her stunning 

set and costume designs are perfect, and The Love Witch 

pays homage to the Technicolor thrillers of the ‘60s. The visual 

influences dance between Alfred Hitchcock, Russ Meyer and 

Douglas Sirk, and the film was shot on 35mm film, proof (if any 

were needed) that the medium remains essential. 

There’s also use of devices such as back projection, further 

emphasising the period feel of the movie. Meanwhile Biller’s 

script and direction drive an exemplary cast who rise to the 

material with ease.

Paths of the Soul is a beautifully poetic, deeply affecting and 

brilliantly simple odyssey of devotion seen through the eyes 

of a group of pilgrims from a small village deep in the isolated 

Tibetan countryside. 

The film unfolds in such a wonderful way from the opening 

moments. What starts out as a chance conversation about 

the possibilities of a pilgrimage between two men herding 

their yaks, soon filters through the village and becomes a fait 

accompli involving young, old, male and female, able and not 

so able. 

But the pilgrimage is more difficult than anyone can imagine 

as the small group must traverse 2000kms of inhospitable 

territory, blizzards, rockfalls, floods and all manner of 

misfortune - all the while having to prostrate themselves to the 

ground every few steps in prayer.

On the surface Patrick’s Day is more immediately accessible 

than McMahon’s previous offering, and it is perhaps a more 

fully developed work, but it retains the anger and frustrations 

of the previous movie and under McMahon’s driven direction 

the cast deliver incredible performances, in a powerful film 

about family and contemporary society. 

A provocative and heart-breaking love story about the right to 

intimacy for everyone, Patrick’s Day proves, when it comes to 

love, we’re all a little crazy. 

“As a powerful portrait of mental paranoia, McMahon’s 

movie might be among the best that cinema has 

produced. It’s certainly the best that Irish cinema has

This is one of those films where you’re either all the way in 

or all the way out - and you’ll know which side of the fence 

you’re on about 10 minutes into this startlingly strange buddy 

comedy. 

Daniel Radcliffe plays Manny - a dead body washed up on a 

deserted island inhabited by a sole long-time shipwrecked 

young man - Hank. 

Through the magic of decomposition, Manny’s body provides 

Hank with his one time only opportunity to literally propel him 

off his tiny island and in what is actually an hilarious sequence, 

Hank grabs hold of it. 

From there a strange kind of metaphysical friendship evolves 

between Hank and Manny - Hank being convinced the 

more he can make Manny remember his past life the more 

chance he stands of bringing Manny back to life. Along their 

journey though Hank discovers even more of Manny’s unique 

decompositional powers that allow him to survive in the most 

inhospitable conditions. 

There are two things here. One is the really great art direction 

and visualisations in the film. Alongside the truly surreal there 

are some fantastically realised set pieces. The other is the 

rapid rising of Radcliffe as a producer and backer of all manner 

of obscure, high-risk and high-concept narrative features. He’s 

staking some firm ground and along with the likes of James Franco, 

he’s carving out his own special niche in independent cinema.

squad of suitably dysfunctional cops on a routine night call that 

takes them far from familiar roads. 

Delving into surreal horror like a finger poking into an openwound, 

Baskin’s dream-logic and shifting narrative emphasises 

brooding atmosphere, all-consuming darkness, and terrifying 

brutality, to nightmarish effect. 

The film has an amazing effect as it jumps backwards and 

forwards in time showing the story from different angles of 

all hapless participants - something that helps with the film’s 

frenetic pace and off-balance story. Just when you think you’ve 

got a handle on the wild ride, Baskin ratchets up its power and 

atmosphere to an almost unbearable level...perfect for hardcore 

horror fans. 

Baskin echoes such touchstones as Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, 

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Clive 

Barker’s Hellraiser, but it is very much its own work. 

A charnel bloodied nightmarishly claustrophobic film, Baskin is 

not a movie recommended for the squeamish or faint of heart.

Each August, in a field in Germany, the Wacken Open Air 

Festival takes place. A celebration of heavy metal music, the 

festival draws 75,000 fans from across the globe to see some 

of the biggest and best heavy metal bands in the world. 

Heitker’s documentary – filmed at the festival’s 24th instalment 

- plays as a 3D celebration of the event, of the bands, and 

the metal heads and rock fans that make up the enthusiastic

Drawing on Harmone Korine’s cult novel, A Crackup At The 

Race Riots shifts between various forms of ‘amateur’ video, 

creating a shifting landscape that incorporates everything from 

teenage webcam girls to shopping malls. 

For a physical and electronic place where nothing really 

happens the results are surprisingly interesting. There’s no 

dare-devils, there’s no going viral and there’s no pets doing 

funny things. It’s all suburban ordinaryness and when put 

together an unusual story of social disconnection and isolation 

is told. This “news from nowhere” is quite fascinating to watch 

and has an odd resonance. 

The film is rich in the raw American iconography that 

punctuates Kornine’s works in literature, music and music 

videos. 

Directed by Leo Gabin – a Belgian video collective – the film 

marks a continuation of Leo Gabin’s collaboration with Korine 

that include Leo Gabin communicating with Korine during the 

development of his hit Spring Breakers. 

An experimental documentary, A Crackup At The Race Riots is 

a remarkable hybrid work. A film for the YouTube generation, 

a renegotiation of the function of cinema and role of narrative, 

the film is a remarkable, essential work.

Joey Skaggs is an arch-prankster, since the late ‘60s he has 

used pranks as an artistic medium, creating cultural and 

political works that play with the media. 

Skaggs is the Godfather of the media hoax, and his creative 

legacy can be traced through to contemporary culture 

jamming and reality hacking by the likes of The Yes Men and 

Improv Everywhere. 

The Art of the Prank focuses on Skaggs’ extensive career in 

pranksterdom, which involves creating hilarious hoaxes that 

become reported as news. 

Skaggs was behind such pranks as the Fat Squad, the brothel 

for dogs, the mobile confessional booth, and many others, all 

of which gained major press and TV coverage internationally. 

He manipulates media reality to expose complacency and 

encourage genuine critical thinking. 

Through both the interviews and archive footage, Skaggs’ 

limitless imagination, his humour, and his astute understanding 

of the power of the media is evident and it’s impossible to

Anonymous street artist Banksy has become a legend for 

his stencil graffiti that offers incisive, sharp political critique, 

garnering critical interest and making the artist a household 

name. 

When, in 2004, Banksy leaves his sculpture The Drinker (a take 

on Rodin’s Thinker) in Central London, former rave promoter, 

artist and mischief maker AK47 decides to take the massive 

sculpture home, and proceeds to engage a truck and a crew 

of friends to undertake a broad-daylight art-heist in Central 

London. The Banksy Job follows the larger-than-life AK47 and 

documents (over the following years) the caper that ensues, 

combining an exploration of the contemporary art word, a 

study of London underground culture, and (perhaps) a battle 

of wits. 

The Banksy Job made Hollywood Reporters Critic’s Picks: 10 

Best Tribeca Films at the Midpoint, and it’s easy to see why, 

directors Gray and Harvey’s film shifts between interviews and 

re-creations, and occasionally it appears to dance between 

re-creation and surreal drama (at one-point AK47 appears 

surrounded by minions in his lair) further conflating biography 

and mythology.

great British humor, a compelling main character, and 

some well-deserved cultural mockery. The fact that the 

audience is even tempted to believe it all speaks to the

If you were make a documentary about the Nostromo - the 

giant cargo space vessel featured in Alien - this would be it. 

This beautiful documentary is a work of art from start to end as 

it spends twelve months on board the giant grain tanker Fair Lady. 

The camera moves from the bridge to the bilge as it captures 

the daily lives and environments of the seamen from high 

drama to flat out boredom. 

But beyond these human observations it’s the vessel itself that 

is the central character with the individuals on it seemingly 

somehow trapped inside the belly of a gigantic whale. 

The film’s exploration of these cavernous and lonely spaces 

is utterly astonishing - they are simply huge with the men 

onboard seemingly as small as the grains of wheat the vessel is 

transporting. 

The images presented are so deep, the scale so enormous, 

the colour so vibrant and the sound so rich that you wonder 

at times if you’re watching some kind of metaphysical work of 

science fiction. 

It’s just brilliant and breathtaking.

changed the way people saw photography. Frank’s vision was 

unique as he caught people’s lives, exploring an unseen world.

groundbreaking indie filmmaker, working with everybody

course, the Rolling Stones.

Frank’s story, exploring his life and work, with Frank – famous for

It’s probably fair to say that the legendary Frank Zappa 

changed music; his life was spent exploring, developing and 

pushing the nature of music and musical form. 

Alongside his musical career, Eat That Question traces Zappa’s 

work and cultural interventions; from his cult film 200 Motels to 

his stand against the emergent PMRC (Parent’s Music Resource 

Committee) in the ‘80s. 

What makes the film so unique is that the voice here is Zappa’s 

own, culled entirely from archival interviews and footage of 

performances. The figure that emerges is never less than 

fascinating, whether appearing on television in the sixties 

showcasing the musical potentials of the bicycle on the Steve 

Allen Show or flying to the liberated Czech Republic where he 

was viewed as a cultural hero of the musical underground. 

For Zappa’s legions of fans the film will be a pure joy to watch, 

while for the uninitiated it offers a fascinating insight into the 

visionary musician.

a service to the man’s legacy and provided a highly

When we were programming this film we had real trouble 

trying to figure out if it’s a feature film or feature documentary 

or in fact a gallery installation...so we’ve settled on 

experimental documentary. 

...And what a lovely experimental documentary it is. 

It’s difficult at first to get a handle on what you’re seeing. A 

very bumpy and noisy journey filmed from a passenger’s 

perspective in a Land Rover charging along a country track. 

The sound is thundering. Suddenly the picture starts to 

disintegrate into pixels to become an unrecognisable blur. 

Just when we’re about to knock on the projectionist’s door to 

complain about the picture quality we realise this is just the 

first of many audio visual surprises. 

Ettrick takes digital technology and literally creates a new 

kind of fabric with a new kind of cinematic texture as Perconte 

explores the beautiful Scottish landscape with a particular 

focus on a textile mill in the countryside. In what’s been 

described as a “visually captivating” style the countryside 

becomes the fabric. 

It’s absolutely fascinating to watch.

history of hip hop fashion. Opening with cotton plantations 

before progressing to the early days of New York hip hop in 

the seventies, and, finally to the global stage and shopping

From graffiti decorated jackets, baggy trousers, classic sports 

wear, bespoke designs, and more, hip hop has always been at 

the forefront of fashion. 

Fresh Dressed tells the story of hip hop fashion, but it also 

looks at the music, the culture and the politics, about the need 

for individual expression and group identity and those who 

sought-out, wore and designed the unique looks that have 

defined the genre in all of its forms. 

This documentary features some great archive material – notably 

the old school footage of NYC in the seventies – and features 

contributions from many of the biggest names in hip hop. 

Fresh Dressed offers an essential history and joyous 

celebration of street fashion.

Fursonas documents the world of furry fandom, looking 

at individuals who dress up and role-play in full-body 

anthropomorphic animal costumes. 

Director Rodriguez takes the audience into this world, 

introducing diverse enthusiasts from Boomer the Dog, whose 

costume is not made from fun fur but shredded paper, and 

Chew Fox, who caused a degree of community outrage when 

she talked on TV about furry sexuality, something that many in 

the community deny exists. 

None the less is it a question both the film and the audience 

asks and this and deeper notions of identity and belonging 

are explored throughout, and it’s that exploration that gives 

the films its wide-eyed innocence, honesty and growing 

international interest. 

The strength of Rodriguez’s film is in his warm understanding 

of his subjects and many open up to him, discussing their 

interests in furry fandom and their own furry-personas. 

Simultaneously joyous and fascinating, Fursonas offers a rare 

opportunity to enter a world most will never otherwise hear of. 

This film is not suitable for children.

also about loss and the Bardo.

and linger over beautiful works of art and architecture. The 

camerawork is full of surprises as we move through windows 

and walls and explore all manner of famous and lesser known 

places at a pace where we’re able to deeply examine and 

admire every detail. The film isn’t without its unusual humour 

as well and depending on where you focus, there’s also lots of 

little background rewards. 

With its epic visual scope and re-engagement with an everyday 

world that we too often miss because of our immersion within 

it, Invention recalls the great City Symphony films of the 1920s 

that defined early cinema. 

A truly cinematic film that will have audiences looking at the 

familiar worlds we inhabit with new wonder.

Over the years, Rev’s annually brought to local audiences 

some of the best music documentaries from the world over - 

and this year sees some of the best we’ve seen including this 

international film festival hit. 

Narrated by Cat Power, Amy (Deliver Us From Evil, West of 

Memphis ) Berg’s documentary Janis: Little Girl Blue tells the 

story of Janis Joplin in intimate detail, from her childhood in 

Port Arthur, Texas to her groundbreaking career and untimely 

death. 

Incredible archive footage and interviews with musicians, 

friends and family are intercut with personal letters that offer a 

unique insight into Joplin’s exceptional talent and personal life. 

Challenging the male-dominated industry while affirming her 

talent, Joplin was a trailblazer, and this documentary makes 

essential viewing.

this outstanding examination of the people surrounded by conflict. 

Stunningly photographed in 16mm The Land of the Enlightened 

follows a group of Afghan children and teenagers in the war torn 

country. 

As American soldiers wait in a remote base and long for home, the 

Afghan youths survive on their wits by scavenging, stealing and 

barter, while dreaming of their own futures in the harsh landscape. 

A hybrid work that shifts between observational documentary and 

dramatic re-enactments, the film offers an evocative and poignant 

portrait of the next generation of Afghans and the land that is 

their home. 

Seven years in the making, The Land of the Enlightened is a 

remarkable work, that follows survival and youthful resilience in a 

perpetually war torn landscape that seems raw and barren, divided 

between mountains, plateaus, fields of poppies and vast skies.

We were first introduced to Travis Wilkerson as a filmmaker 

back in the early days of Rev with his fantastic agit-essay on 

Cuban revolutionary filmmaker Santiago Alvarez - Accelerated 

Underdevelopment: In the Idiom of Santiago Alvarez. Since 

then we’ve stayed in touch and now he’s back with this 

excellent experimental agit-punk-noir work Machine Gun or 

Typewriter? 

Using a lot of found footage, lazy and laconic sequences of 

urban landscapes, animated graphic insertions and a hushed 

voice-over throughout, in this work “The protagonist, who 

we only ever see behind (and half obscured by) a microphone, 

narrates this idiosyncratic odyssey as the sole operator of a 

pirate radio station, using his latest broadcast to appeal to 

a former lover, for whom he’s searching in the aftermath of 

police crackdowns on Occupy.” 

It’s subversive, political, different and with a passing nod to 

Alvarez and experimental giant Chris Marker, Machine Gun or 

Typewriter? is an experimental feast with great musicality and 

very definite cool.

As an artist and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe created 

works that were stunning in their power. He created numerous 

iconographic images; from the portrait of his youthful muse 

and collaborator Patti Smith, which appears on the cover of 

Horses, through to meticulously crafted photographs of flowers, 

and controversial depictions of the gay S&M underground that 

caused outrage amongst the religious right of the eighties. 

What these works shared was the artist’s complete control of 

the photographic image: meticulously lit, perfectly framed, and, 

without fail, evocative in their sculptural beauty. 

In Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, directors Bailey and 

Barbato (whose previous collaborations include directing 

Inside Deep Throat and Party Monster and producing Ru-Paul’s 

Drag Race ) tell the photographer’s story through interviews 

with family, friends, and partners, archive footage and the 

photographs themselves. 

The film follows the groundbreaking photographer’s life, from his 

childhood in Queens to two major retrospectives in Los Angeles, 

held years after his death, creating a cinematic portrait of one of 

the 20 th centuries’ most important artists.

and film essayists. Having a fine record in working with hidden 

corners of cinema with Notfilm he brings to the fore one of those 

hidden and nearly lost moments. Bringing together the worlds 

of literature, theatre and cinema Lipman’s exhaustive work is 

enlighting in both its style and its content. 

Staring the legendary Buster Keaton and written and conceived 

by Samuel Beckett, Film was intended as a unique collaboration 

between artists and visionaries. 

NotFilm tells the story of the production of Film, exploring the 

creative collaboration that drew in figures including Grove Press’s 

Barney Rossett and director Alan Schneider (best known for 

directing Beckett’s works on stage). 

With incredible access to archive materials – from outtakes to 

recordings of production meetings – the evocative, fascinating 

cinematic essay NotFilm explores the nature of collaboration, 

film and the philosophical nature of the work. 

Following NotFilm, Revelation is proud to be screening Film, to 

enable audiences to see Schneider, Beckett and Keaton’s work.

Nuts! tells the almost unbelievable story of Dr John Romulus 

Brinkley, a depression-era ‘visionary’ who built his empire on 

a combination of border radio and goat testicle transplants 

(which consisted of transplanting slices of goat testicles into 

human males in order to cure impotence). Somehow he 

invented everything from junk mail to the infomercial, and was 

almost the Governor of Kansas. 

Through a combination of animation, archive footage and 

interviews, director Penny Lane offers an insight not just into 

one man but into the birth of the modern era, medicine and 

quacks, and the potential of mass media. 

Lovingly animated and a joy to watch, Nuts! is an exploration 

and celebration of a different era, of a world that is familiar yet 

somehow uncanny.

Premiering at Cannes, 2015, The Other Side isn’t for the faint of 

heart. The film offers a harrowing-yet-poignant portrait of rural 

Louisiana. 

This beautifully lensed documentary chronicles a world of drugs 

and guns, of anti-government militia prepping for the end-times, 

and of drug users struggling to make a buck. 

These appear to be hard lives, but under Minervini’s careful 

direction a more complex picture emerges. His vérité filmmaking 

style offering his subjects the space to breathe and their stories 

the opportunity to slowly unfold. 

This is not easy viewing, and there are no pleas for sympathy, 

but there is no judgement either, instead The Other Side offers a 

portrait of those who are forgotten by the world. 

Winning awards at the Pusan International Film Festival, Montreal 

International Documentary Festival, Seville European Film 

Festival, St Petersburg Message to Man Film Festival, amongst 

others, the film has been described by Variety as a “beautifully 

disquieting immersion in Louisiana lives.” The Other Side will stay 

with the viewer long after the credits have rolled.

A central figure in twentieth-century avant-garde culture Tony 

Conrad’s biography can be traced through music, cinema and 

visual art. 

Playing with, among others, John Cale and La Monte Young 

he developed Just Intonation and Minimalism, he played a 

pivotal role in the formation of the Velvet Underground, and 

collaborated with German cult group Faust. 

Conrad also directed the groundbreaking experimental film 

Flicker and worked on the soundtrack for the legendary 

underground movie Flaming Creatures. 

Equally at home with public access television, working as an 

artist, collaborating with musicians and inspiring students, 

Conrad’s influence extended throughout the worlds of music, 

art and film. 

Filming Conrad since the 1990s, Tyler Hubby’s debut 

documentary feature, completed shortly before Conrad’s 

death earlier this year, combines archive and interviews to offer 

a fascinating portrait of the inspirational artist.

The Grand Jury Documentary Prize winner at this year’s 

Sundance Film Festival, Weiner offers a fascinating, edge-of-theseat 

behind-the-scenes view of disgraced Congressman 

Anthony Weiner. 

The cut and thrust of political life is central to Weiner’s life, and, 

despite resigning from Congress in 2011 as the result of a sexting 

scandal, two-years later he decides to run for mayor of New York. 

But then another scandal breaks… 

Fly-on-the-wall documentary Weiner follows the campaign, but 

this rapidly expands into an exploration of family, devotion, 

loyalty, and the pitfalls of digital media. The results are a movie 

described by Variety as “a rollicking and never-dull insiders’ view 

of a political campaign.” 

Weiner unfolds at quite the most frenetic pace and just when 

you think things couldn’t go any more off the rails, the heat is 

turned up just that little more for him and us. For the viewer it 

reaches excruciating levels of tension - and not without subtantial 

humour. But amped to 11 throughout there’s simply no stopping 

this man - whatever wreckage he may leave in his wake. 

By turns funny, absurd and tragic, and always fascinating, Weiner 

is essential viewing.
