! In the <strong>Eighth</strong> survey, the information about access to<br />

playground facility to the recognised schools is<br />

collected on five well-defined criteria (i) number of<br />

schools having playground facility for the students;<br />

(ii) number of schools having playground facility<br />

within school premises; (iii) number of schools having<br />

playground facility in usable condition; (iv) area of<br />

playground and detail about games/sports played in<br />

the school.<br />

! The <strong>Eighth</strong> survey reveals that, out of total recognised<br />

schools in the country, nearly 50% schools have playground facility for their<br />

children. However, 48.34% schools have playground facility within the school<br />

premises . Out of this, 45.24% schools’ playgrounds are in usable condition. This<br />

was further distributed over government, local body, private aided and private<br />

unaided schools by 38.37%, 47.89%, 66.52% and 65.23% respectively.<br />

! At elementary level of schooling, the playground facility within the school<br />

premises in usable condition are available in 38.14% (primary) and 49.62%<br />

(upper primary) schools. In rural area, 37.34% primary schools and 48.56%<br />

upper primary schools have playground facility within the school premises in<br />

usable condition whereas the same is available in 42.17% and 54.94% schools in<br />

urban area, respectively.<br />

! The <strong>Eighth</strong> survey provides information regarding availability of ancillary<br />

facilities within the school premises viz., drinking water, usable toilet facilities<br />

(urinal and lavatory), electricity connection, arrangement of annual medical<br />

check-up (vaccination/inoculation) of students, playground and sports material.<br />

! Around 11,61,698 (89.37%) recognised schools reported availability of drinking<br />

water facilities within school premises. It reflects that nearly 10.63% schools are<br />

not having drinking water facility. In rural area, 9,69,727 (88.60%) schools have<br />

drinking water facility, and nearly 11.40% schools are without drinking water<br />

facility. In urban area, 1,91,971 (93.47%) schools have drinking water facility and<br />

nearly 6.53% schools are without drinking water facility. While in Seventh survey<br />

it was 8,27,684 recognised schools where drinking water facility available within<br />

school premises. In rural area, 6,67,578 (78.25%) schools have the drinking<br />

water facility and nearly 21.75% schools are without drinking water facility<br />

within the school premises.<br />

! The availability of drinking water facility in primary schools within premises in<br />

rural area is– government (87.53%), local body (82.94%), private-added<br />

(83.91%) and private unaided (94.33%) whereas, in upper primary it is–<br />

89.63%, 92.48%, 86.31% and 95.56%, respectively. Further, in secondary it is–<br />

89.08%, 85.59%, 94.68%, 95.23% and in higher secondary– 94.31%, 95.03%,<br />

97.75%, 97.64%, respectively.<br />
