FAMILY DAY CARE ASSOCIATION QUEENSLAND LEADING FROM WITHIN By Cathy Cahill “This resource presents a new vision for the role of the practice mentor to ensure they are able to meet the needs of education and care in the 21st century”. Our sector is at a crossroads. External change is placing opportunities and demands upon us at a faster rate than we are responding. For too long we have turned our gaze inwards and not been mindful enough of the enormity of change occurring around us. We have continued to do what we do bestworking with children, but we have also allowed external forces to define us, and today the sector is becoming increasingly fragmented and divided. It is not overstating the case to say that the action we take now will determine our future survival and sustainability, and our continued capacity to offer amazing education and care to children. THIS RESOURCE IS PART OF FAMILY DAY CARE ASSOCIATION QUEENSLAND’S EFFORT TO LEAD FROM WITHIN BY: • Presenting a new vision for the coordinators role to meet the needs of the 21st century. As part of this we have renamed the role to Practice Mentor. • Building knowledge, skills and capacity within family day care to manage the opportunities and demands ahead. FDCAQ engaged external consultants to develop the Practice Mentor Capability Framework and the Position paper on the role over a five month period in 2015. This consultation and research processes included; FDC sector interviews and consultative forums with external government and nongovernment personnel including State and National regulatory bodies, web-based surveys, a review of existing documentation of the Coordinator Role, and research into leadership and capability frameworks. The Practice Mentor Capability Framework presents a new vision for the role of the practice mentor to ensure they are able to meet the needs of education and care in the 21st century. The resource explores the Early Years Learning Framework core themes, principles, practices and outcomes as they relate to the family day care context and the role of a practice mentor. THE PRACTICE MENTOR CAPABILITY FRAMEWORK WILL: • Highlight the skills and knowledge required to facilitate the expected outcomes of the National Quality Framework • Provide a framework for exploring the current capacity of a practice mentor and identify areas for development • Showcase and highlight the complex work of the practice mentor, specifically focusing on how this contributes to and enhances the outcomes for children. • Support engagement in the development of professional capacity for Practice Mentors “The goal was to devise a capability framework that is inspiring, practical and easy to use – a document that people would see as relevant and want to use.” This resource is made up of: • Practice Mentor Capability Framework • Practice Mentor Capability Framework Poster • Family Day Care Coordinator role position paper • Capability Pursuit Cards Cost of Kit $99.95 To purchase these new and exciting resources visit: www.fdcqlg.org/shop FDC is capable of initiating sector level change, lifting its own benchmarks, challenging within and externally, boldly setting a vision for the future. Practice Mentor Capability Framework The Practice Mentor Capability Framework is an interactive resource which FDC Services are able to explore areas that are of interest to their staff in their own context.
