MIDLAND LAKELAND TERRIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
SEPTEMBER 2015.
Saturday 19 th September was greeted with excellent weather and the
Midland Lakeland Terrier Club Championship Show, Secretary Helen
Ashe greeted exhibitors and visitors alike as they entered Shenstone
Village Hall which has been the home of the Club for some years now,
the Club is celebrating its 30 th Show year quite some achievement for a
British numerically small breed.
The concept and idea for the club was hatched on the patio of Reg & Dot
Taylor’s home in Derbyshire, Reg, Dot and close friend Gerald Gensberg
recognised the that the Midlands was fast becoming a hot bed for the
breed and terriers in general. The next stage for the trio was to gather
support for a breed club to service the interest in the Midlands, with support
from the Lakeland Terrier Society and many Terrier people the application
was sent to the Kennel Club which was duly rejected.
During the Birmingham National Championship Dog Show of 1984 supporters
lobbied many known Kennel Club members, the hard work carried
out by the Club’s supporters paid off when the registration was accepted
later that year. A licence was granted for an Open show on 10 th
March 1985 to be held at Featherstone Community Centre near Wolverhampton.
The committee with Reg Taylor as President (who still holds
this position today) and Gerald Gensberg Chairman chose the top Lakeland
person of the day in Les Atkinson (Saredon) to judge the first show
of the newly formed Midland Lakeland Terrier Club. Les Atkinson (father
of Judy Averis) who handled Champion Rogerholme Recruit to Best in
Show at Crufts in 1963 unfortunately passed away shortly before the
show took place.
Mr Frank Jones, another top terrier handler was able to step in at short
notice and completed the appointment.
The Club has grown in popularity with its central location and dedicated
hard work of Secretary Helen Ashe with a small but hard working committee,
the club has for many years been breaking new ground in order
to attract not just the show exhibitors but Lakeland Terrier owners in
general which gives the Midland Lakeland Terrier Club shows a very
friendly social atmosphere.

Page 7
The MLTC has also under the leadership of Helen Ashe put a tremendous
amount of work into Discover Dogs at Crufts and also the now finished
Discover Dogs at Earls Court, being part of the events since their
beginnings. Many of the present Lakeland Terrier judges have began
their first breed judging appointments with the Midland Lakeland Terrier
Club and continue to support up and coming judges with first time appointments
and breed stakes classes in order to gain valuable experience
and the all important numbers.
The judge for the 2015 Championship show was Dieny De Munter ( Van
Foliny Home) her first time awarding Challenge Certificates in the breed,
Dieny is well known around terrier circles having done her terrier apprenticeship
at the famous Saredon kennels with the late Judy Averis
who was the Midland Lakeland Terrier Club Patron for many years.
Dieny now lives in Belgium and has her own successful kennel.
Thank you, to Our Dogs Photographer Rob Jones for recording the show
in photos and for advertising it in our Dogs Newspaper and to all the
sponsors i.e. celebration cakes (2) Prosecco and donations in kind.
After the judging had been completed a celebration birthday cake donated
by founder member Wendy Bower was enjoyed with the aid of a
little alcoholic beverage.
Thank you, to our members and Exhibitors for their support in the past
for their attendance at the shows and hopefully in the future.
The Midland Lakeland Terrier Club known for its new ideas organised an
exhibitor’s ring number draw with 10 x £10.00 cash prizes while the
festivities continued. The Midland Lakeland Terrier Club is a credit to its
Officers, Committee and its loyal band of Lakeland Terriers owners, long
may it continue………………………………………..Joe Ashe.

“The Power of the Paw”
Waffle the Lakeland Terrier who lives in Devon was featured in lots
of national newspapers last year when a friend Sally Grist who also
has a Lakeland Terrier, Barley suggested she would sponsor Waffle
£1 a ball she found for a week, to raise money for Terrier SOS. Terrier
SOS is a very small UK based charity who rescue abused, abandoned
and neglected dogs across Europe who are often in put to
sleep shelters. Waffle found 23 balls in that one week.... we thought
me might raise £100...we put it on Facebook and the event went
global and we raised £4,575...this year we wanted to do something
different.
This year we wanted to do another fund raiser...but I didnt want it to
be just about Waffle..so Sally and I came up with the idea of a 'World
Wide Sponsored Treasure (Treshur) hunt'. So dogs that don't like
balls or who don't have the opportunity to find balls could take part.
We posted the 'World Wide Sponsored Treasure hunt' on Facebook
hoping we might get a few people and pawpals to take part. We
listed 25 items that people and their dogs needed to find while out
and about on their walks. We chose 25 items that we thought were
universal and could be found wherever you might be in the world,
such as a park bench, a red door, the number 8, a statue, a policeman/policewoman,
a tree stump/fallen tree, a water feature, a
round window, a post box, a flag, a celebrity etc etc The idea being to
take a photo of each item found with your dog...and also to get sponsorship
to help raise money for Terrier SOS here in the UK....we did
also say that if people in the USA would like to take part then if they
wanted to they were more than welcome to send a donation to
WFTRM (Wire Fox Terrier rescue Midwest) as they do amazing rescue
work too! People were invited to be as creative as they like with the
items...thinking outside the box! To enjoy and have fun! Also they
didn't have to find every item, but to post a photo online as proof of
their treasure finds.

Page 22
We were overwhelmed by the response! People and their dogs
from all over the world joined in the fun...We have had photos from
all over the United States of America ...Australia...New Zealand...Canada...Hungary....France....Italy....Spain...Switzerland...Kor
ea....Germany...Ireland...to name but a few countries....and here in
the UK!
We’ve had Tui I(another Lakeland) in New Zealand who’s sniffed
out the All Blacks… Jaxon in Paris who’s dug up a French flag…
Poby (a Lakeland too) in Korea has fetched some astronauts… and
of course - our very own Waffle was busy tracking down borlees
(balls) left right and centre! Over 275 dogs were treasure hunting
all over the world, and there are some amazing photograph.
So far we’ve raised £7,000 for Terrier SOS, a small UK charity who
rescue abandoned, neglected and abused dogs. This total is going
to rise further as we are currently doing a book of the
'Treshur hunt'
featuring many
of the amazing
photos from all
around the
world.
I think this is a
heart-warming
‘tail’ of true
international
cooperation via
social media,
and all in aid of
rescuing and re-homing abandoned dogs and helping save lives of
less fortunate dogs. So many people have messaged us saying
what a wonderful event this treasure hunt is...helping raise money
to change and save lives of dogs who might otherwise be put to
sleep. It also shows the positive side of Social Media...and people
have commented about how many new friends they have made
across the globe through seeing all the photos and connecting to
like minded dog lovers. SARAH BENNETT.

DISCOVER DOGS CRUFTS 1994-2015.
21 Years the MLTC have organised DD at Crufts: where has the time
gone? In this time we have been helped enormously by many
volunteers to numerous to mention over the years. We didn’t take
as many photos in the early years as we do now but it is well
documented.
I remember well the first one as it involved transporting a lot items
for the booth and our Lakies as well as a large black bag of helium
balloons with the letters Lakeland terriers on them donated by the
late Barbara Greenway (Rayfos) who also attended with Mary their
LT nicknamed Houdini as she kept finding ways out of the pen which
wasn’t very secure in the early days. The helium balloons got tangled
while trying to fix them at a height above the booth and it took ages
to untangle them with the help of the other breed booth holders, we
didn't take them again as the KC banned them not because of us
but for security reason or so they said!! It has gone from strength to
strength and is a very popular event with the public year on year
with visitor numbers increasing steadily.
Over the last 8 years Pauline and Simon have at great cost to
themselves in time and finances helped enormously on the booth on
Terrier Day while I have flitted between Hall 1 and Hall 3 giving out
the yearbooks to our members, Fergus and Button having attended
when very young until now, button is 12 and Fergus is 10.
Page 32
We have over the years met so many people through our connection
with DD, many from abroad who have visited the Booth and are owners
and admirers of the Lakeland terrier and we were pleased to
have been paid a visit from Jo-Lynn Hefferman this year although
Jo-Lynn has always visited the booth when at Crufts.
Below is a photo of Chelsea Pensioners who are regulars to the Discover
Dogs section and they look so smart in their uniforms with
their medals on display for all to admire. Anne with Rosie on the last
day of Crufts looking very calm in reality shattered from a very busy
day.

Page 33
In recent years, Gail, Sadie , Don, Emma, Charlotte, Nicola, Anne and
Simon with their Lakelands have all been instrumental in relaying to
the public their experience of owning a Lakie/s as a family member
on a daily basis and also from a show point of view.
This will be the last time that Joe and I shall organise Discover
Dogs at Crufts and we thank very much all the volunteers for their
time and financial cost to themselves over the years and most of
all to the lovely Lakelands who have endeared themselves to the
public and they are the reason that we have carried on for so long
In order to promote the breed, there are many Lakelands around the UK
that never enter the show ring which is a shame as numbers are dwindling
but hopefully we can still attract them to come to the breed clubs
and keep talking all things Lakeland…………………..Helen.

Agility by Accident. Part .2.
Ruby and I ended 2014 with some lovely clear rounds in agility and I was
feeling very hopeful for what 2015 held in store for us.
So looking back on 2015 now, how did we do?
Well our agility start did not happen due to snowy weather stopping travel
and a blizzard stopping our next show while we were there.
The breed shows fared better, with a great day out with the Midland Lakeland
Terrier Club open show where we came home with the Res. Best in
Show. So pleased Ruby showed very well and with confidence. Then onto
Scottish Kennel Club where she again showed well and came home with
the Reserve Bitch C.C.
Ruby’s fears of large dogs and strange places seemed to be well and truly
over and she really has not looked back.
After an early holiday in June our next agility competition was at Tweedbank
Dog Agility Club show held at Kelso. She did some great rounds but something
was missing. So you all know, when you know you have a good dog
your competition instinct kicks in, and you focus on what is needed to have
a winning chance. My lack of experience, and lack of the more advanced
agility skills was holding Ruby back.

Page 39
If I continued handling her in the same way and with no care as to how we
negotiated a course then all I was going to have with Ruby was a fun day
out, but I was feeling competitive.
As luck would have it I met the trainer I am now with while walking around
Tweedbank show where I was introduced to her. I was lucky that she agreed
to take us on it meant leaving the Dryburgh group whom I had been training
with and the people that I had trained with every week. That was a difficult
decision and one that I have not regretted. I still see them at the shows and
other events where we catch up on our news.

I also have a new network of friends since moving, which is great. The support
of friends around you at the shows and at training is helpful and
makes everthing more enjoyable.
Cathy, my new trainer, only trains
with small classes of 5 to 6 dogs,
which is ideal. It gives Ruby and I
individual training. She has given
me faith in my own handling, and
trusting Ruby to do her part.
I have been shown some great
new turns and shown the best
lines to take on a course. Which
means more fun and therefore a
better chance to win and just what
I needed. We have not looked
back with Ruby qualifying into
Grade 2 after two lessons with
Cathy.
She has continued
to win at each of the
six shows we have
gone to since June.
Ruby needs only
one more jumping
win or an agility win
to go up an
other grade. She is
as very close to doing
so as she is consistently
running the
courses now, at
least 10 – 15 seconds faster than she was doing at the start of the summer.
She just missed winning recently by one second, she is very close.
With my handling improving and my mind focusing on the courses, I am
sure 2016 will be a successful year for us.
next year with the caravan She just missed winning recently by one second,
she is very close. With my handling improving and my mind focusing
on the courses, I am sure 2016 will be a successful year for us.
Our caravan came in very useful at the Hare and Hound show in August,
where we did a little wild caravanning along with the other competitors.

Page 41
We took all our dogs with us, the three lakies and poodle, which was great
as nobody was left at home. pitching alongside friends which meant we
could socialise in the evenings. Hopefully we will be doing more weekend
shows With the caravan.
it has been a long
journey for Ruby
and I, but we have
both enjoyed all
the challenges
along the way and
the result is a confident,
happy well
balanced little
terrier. We now
have a great relationship.
Which is
why we started on
agility in the first
place. Ruby has
also won a lot of admiration from the agility world for her drive and enthusiasm
at the competitions and with luck giving Lakies a good name.
Looking back on 2015 I can say we had a great year, a successful and fun
year. Bring on 2016.
CANINE THYROID DISORDER – A GROWING EPIDEMIC.
In the past year or so, I have heard of two dogs who have suddenly
become aggressive either to family members or to other dogs. In
both cases the dogs were over three years old and had previously
been normal, even tempered animals; the sudden change in behaviour
seemed to have no simple explanation. The owners tried all
kind of things to sort their dog out. The first thing was to exclude any
physical reasons for this uncharacteristic behaviour; each dog being
taken to the vet for a full examination where nothing of any significance
was found.
Behaviourists were also consulted but because the aggressive episodes
were so random and happened without warning it proved difficult
for the behaviourist to draw any conclusions. Sadly one of the
dogs lived with young children and because of the risk to them, a
decision was taken to put the dog to sleep. The other owner soldiered
on, reading and researching on the internet, hoping to find
out why her beloved dog had changed character so dramatically.
She eventually came across an article by Dr. Jean Dodds in America
which stated that aggression can be a symptom of thyroid disease.
Coincidently, I had recently booked a place at a seminar where Dr.
Dodds was to lecture on Canine Thyroid Disorder. Dr. Dodds is arguably
the world's foremost authority on canine thyroid and autoimmune
diseases. She has worked in both human and animal medical
research since she graduated with Honours from the University of
Toronto Veterinary College in 1965.
Dr. Dodds began her talk by saying that every year huge numbers of
dogs suffer needlessly and many die or are put to sleep because of
an easily treatable condition known as canine thyroid disorder; the
most common endocrine system disease in dogs.
Thyroid disorder can cause dozens of diverse problems in both
health and behaviour and often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed
because it mimics so many other diseases and conditions.
.

PAGE 63
SYMPTOMS OF THYROID DISEASE.
All mammals have ten body systems, each of which must be working
properly for good health; respiratory, digestive, excretory, skin, skeletal,
endocrine (hormonal), reproductive, nervous, muscular and circulatory
The pituitary gland in the brain controls the thyroid and the
thyroid regulates the body's basic metabolism by producing thyroxine
(T4) and triidothyronine (T3). These hormones are necessary for
each and every cell in a dog's body to work normally. This explains
why any disruption in these hormones can cause problems in any
area of the body.
Symptoms of the disease do not become apparent until 70% of the
thyroid gland has been destroyed. The classic symptoms to be
aware of are; bi-lateral hair loss, dry scaly skin, muscle wastage just
above the eyes, weight gain, hair loss and mental or physical lethargy.
Other symptoms can be as varied as gastrointestinal conditions,
seizures, cruciate ligament tears, food allergies and behavioural
changes such as aggression, anxiety disorders and phobias.
Thyroid disease can also cause infertility, irregular heats or absence
of heats in bitches and testicular shrinkage in dogs.
The physical symptoms are most likely to prompt an owner to visit
the vet with their dog but behavioural changes, caused by poor thyroid
function, are often misdiagnosed and the dog is referred to a
behaviourist or trainer when what the dog really needs is a twice
daily dose of thyroxine, the hormone produced by the thyroid.
Dr. Dodds' research has shown that the tests normally carried out by
vets to screen for thyroid problems, may only be 70% accurate when
used on dogs because the science of interpreting results was developed
from human medicine and dogs have a significantly different
thyroid function. To date, there are very few vet schools teaching the
latest findings and most of the veterinary textbooks are outdated.
CONTINUED…………….. OVERLEAF.

Page 64
CAUSES
A small butterfly shaped organ, which wraps around the dog's trachea
or windpipe just below the larynx, damage to the thyroid gland
can be caused by many things. Frequent use of antibiotics, anticonvulsants
and anti-inflammatories can all cause problems and
research is showing that over vaccination is a big problem because it
overloads the dog's immune system. Vets have been advised, by
their own governing body, not to vaccinate animals any more than is
necessary and for adult dogs this is now considered to be no more
frequently than every three to four years. In spite of this, many vets
still ask you to bring your dog for a booster every twelve months.
Because of its position in the neck, the thyroid can be damaged by
heavy collars and if you have a dog who pulls excessively, it would be
safer to use a harness to prevent this.
However, 80% of thyroid disease is inherited. This is called autoimmune
thyroiditis and dogs with the condition tend to have a predisposition
towards other autoimmune diseases and shouldn't be bred
from. As symptoms often do not show themselves until a dog is
around 3 to 4 years of age and are likely to be diagnosed as something
else, the dog may be used in a breeding programme and continue
to pass on the faulty genes, perpetuating the disease.
DIAGNOSIS
When a vet suspects thyroid disease or is hoping to exclude it as a
reason for health problems, he will often take blood samples and
test for T4 (thyroxine) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). The
results are measured against the diagnostic laboratory's 'normal'
reference levels which are based on levels found in a healthy, adult,
medium sized dog. Although most dog breeds have similar levels,
these vary according to the size, age and lifestyle of the dog. For
example, puppies are still growing, have a fast metabolism and
therefore need extra hormones as they go through the maturation
process. Whereas, the metabolism of older dogs is slowing down so
they need to produce less thyroid hormone. Working dogs and those
who take part in regular in activities such as agility competitions, will
have a higher metabolic rate than 'couch potatoes' and this needs to
be taken into account when analysing their thyroid function.

Page 65
The large breeds have slower metabolisms than the small breeds,
imagine a Newfoundland with the energy of a Lakeland Terrier! A
blanket approach to analysing the results often leads to false normal
or abnormal results and misdiagnosis.
Dr. Dodds is the owner of Hemopet, a diagnostic service which specialises
in thyroid testing. Based in California, it offers a worldwide
service to vets and pet owners. Vets can send tests results to Hemopet,
via computer, where they will be analysed using the correct,
specific range which applies to the lifestyle and physical factors of
that particular dog, allowing the correct dose of hormone to be prescribed.
If any further consultation is needed, Dr. Dodds is available
to talk with vets and pet owners.
TREATMENT
98% of dogs diagnosed with thyroid disease are treated with an inexpensive,
twice daily dose of thyroxine which very quickly alleviates
symptoms. It does not cure the disease so dogs have to remain on
this hormone replacement therapy for the rest of their life.
DR. JEAN DODDS – a little extra…..
Dr. Dodds is a truly remarkable woman, a scientist first and foremost
but one with a great love of dogs and a passion to make their lives
better whenever she can.
I was a little bemused when she began talking about the Greyhound
racing industry in the USA, an industry which generates vast numbers
of unwanted dogs. She described how the majority of these
animals are destroyed because they are too old for racing or they
just don't have the 'winning streak'. She then went on to talk about
her early years researching into human and animal 'bleeding' diseases'
and her subsequent post as Executive Director of the Human
Blood and Transfusion Service of the New York State Health Department.
Her experiences there and her work in the veterinary field led
her to the conclusion that a national blood transfusion bank was
needed for animals.
CONTINUED………………………..OVERLEAF

Page 66
When she moved to California in 1986 she was able to address both
of these issues. Dr. Dodds began by setting up an adoption centre
for the unwanted Greyhounds. At the same time she founded the
first, non-profit making, national blood bank for animals in the USA
called Hemopet.
Dr. Dodds wanted her blood transfusion service to be affordable for
as many pet owners as possible and realised she would have a resource
in the greyhounds. Greyhounds awaiting adoption could be
the donors and this contribution would fund the adoption centre.
The dogs are rescued with the prime aim of finding them new
homes. They are kept in very comfortable surroundings to accustom
them to living in a home environment rather than kennels. They are
given plenty of playtime and socialised and exercised daily to get
them in the best of health before any blood is taken. Once a new
home is found, they are never used as donors again and hopefully
have a long and happy retirement. Both Hemopet and Hemolife are
non-profit making organisations.
Kate Watkins, Breed Health Coordinator.
VETERINARY THERMAL IMAGING
If your dog is quieter than usual, seems to be unhappy or uncomfortable,
he could be in pain. If your show dog is not moving as well as
he could in the show ring, can you pinpoint why? Do you know if your
older dog is in pain from dental disease? Is that lump on his back an
innocuous fatty lump or is it something more sinister?
To answer these questions you would probably need a visit to the vet
for x-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound or investigative surgery, all of which
cost large amounts of money; around £100 - £150 for one x-ray
plate and around £800 for an MRI scan. There is now another,
much cheaper, additional tool which can aid identification of all of
the above problems; thermography or thermal imaging.
To have one area of your dog's body assessed, i.e. a pair of legs,
would cost around £40 but you can choose to have the whole body
mapped and this costs less than £100. The advantage of thermal
imaging is that it does not require the animal to be sedated and the
hand held scanner does not need to be in contact with the body surface,
therefore reducing stress levels.

Page 67
and the hand held scanner does not need to be in contact with the
body surface, therefore reducing stress levels.
Veterinary Thermal Imaging Ltd. (VTI) is the first UK company to offer
this relatively new diagnostic tool in equine and companion animal
medicine. VTI operates from bases all around the UK but offer a mobile
service so you can have your animal examined in your own
home.
Thermal Imaging maps the surface temperature of your animal's
body and can detect problems up to three weeks before any clinical
symptoms present themselves. A normal, healthy animal will have a
symmetrical body surface temperature. Any physiological changes
caused by injury or infection will disturb the tissues and blood flow,
resulting in temperature changes which the thermal imaging camera
detects. The camera captures heat photons emitted from the body
and converts them into electrical impulses which are then displayed
as colour images on the monitor. Copies of the images are then supplied
to the owner and their vet on a CD-ROM.
Thermography can detect a variety of problems before they cause
undue discomfort. Early detection allows earlier treatment which is
often cheaper, more effective and quicker. Common conditions
identified by thermal imaging are shifting and non-specific lameness,
back and joint problems, skin cancers, dental disease and osteoarthritis,
Veterinary Thermal Imaging operates under a code of conduct prescribed
by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, providing reports
for owners following veterinary referral. They also provide reports
for physiotherapists, again after referral by a vet. VTI provide
consultancy services to both the public and private sector and will
accept requests from pet owners for thermography but will always
request permission from the owner's vet and share any results with
them. For those of you who own horses, VTI offer a pre-purchase
check. Buying a horse can be a very expensive business and having
a full body check would ensure you are buying a healthy animal, free
from injury and disease. Correct fit of a saddle is paramount to a
horse's back health, VTI also offer a saddle fitting service.
MEDICAL DETECTION DOGS
CAN SNIFFER DOGS REALLY SPOT CANCER?
Over the past few years, the media has carried stories about dogs
who seemed to be able to sniff out cancer. There have been
accounts of dogs becoming obsessed with sniffing or licking
particular parts of their owner's body to such a degree that the
person felt compelled to visit their GP and were subsequently
diagnosed with cancer in the area of the body the dog had been
focussing on. These anecdotes led to several research projects
taking place around the world to determine if cancer actually does
produce a detectable odour which dogs can accurately identify. A
programme in Milan involving 900 prostate cancer patients reported
a 98% success rate with medical sniffer dogs.
A dog's nose is vastly superior to a humans. Depending on the breed
and the length of their muzzle, they have between 125 million and
300 million sensory receptors compared to our 5 million and their
sense of smell is so powerful a dog could detect one drop of blood in
an area of water the size of four Olympic swimming pools. Dogs also
devote 40 times more brain function to receiving and analysing
smells than humans do.
In the UK, a new charity, Medical Detection Dogs, has over 20 dogs
who are trained to sniff out breast, prostate and bladder cancers
from samples of a patient's urine or breath. These dogs live as pets
in normal family homes but go out to work each day at the charity's
centre in the Buckinghamshire countryside.
An early study by the charity showed that trained dogs detected 93%
of prostate tumours from urine samples. This result led to a three
year study, together with Milton Keynes University Hospital,
assessing samples from 3,000 patients to check for prostate, kidney
and bladder cancers. The charity is hoping that the end result will
lead to permission to accept referrals from GPs and private
practices.

Page 69
Medical Detection Dogs also train dogs to support people with complex
health conditions such as diabetes, allergies and seizures. The
dogs are taught to identify the odours which precede life-threatening
events like a dangerous fall or rise in blood sugar levels. The dogs
can warn the owner, get help and fetch medical supplies. One dog
Nano, has been trained as an allergy alert dog. His owner has a severe
allergy to nuts and having Nano allows her to lead a normal life.
He is trained to alert her to the presence of nuts in foodstuffs such
as ready prepared sandwiches and checks out her her environment
such as in shops, pubs and even at work where he has sniffed out
traces of nuts in colleagues' desks and drawers.
These highly trained dogs allow people with serious health problems
to live independent lives and probably save the NHS a considerable
amount of money in the process. Although scientists may eventually
develop machines which can 'sniff' out cancers from samples of
urine or breath, a machine will never replace the freedom, companionship
and security a medical detection dog gives to its owner.
Cost Effective Road to Compulsory Microchipping
And Life Long Security for Kennel Club Registered Dogs
Free microchip record changes for Kennel Club registered puppies
You may have heard that compulsory microchipping for all dogs will
come into force on 6 th April 2016 in England and Wales. So, from
April 2016, the Kennel Club and Petlog will be introducing free microchip
record changes for Kennel Club registered puppies.
Once the owner changes the Kennel Club registered ownership, they
will be given the opportunity to complete the requirement to transfer
keepership on the Petlog database free of charge (usually £16) –
this will also include an upgrade to the Petlog Premium reunification
services for the life of their new puppy.
In order to receive free microchip record changes for your Kennel
Club registered puppies, make sure to choose a microchip that is
associated with Petlog. There are 12 microchip suppliers to choose
from and you can search for your local implanter at
www.findapetlogimplanter.org.uk.
Not all microchips are associated with Petlog and the Kennel Club,
it’s important to choose the right microchip supplier
www.petlog.org.uk/microchip-suppliers
Who is Petlog?
Petlog, managed by the Kennel Club, is the UK’s largest reunification
database for microchipped pets
Government compliant microchip database with ISO 9001 and
27001 certification
More than 9 million pet owners trust Petlog to look after their
pets

Page 71
What does the law say?
All dog owners in England and Wales have until 6 April 2016 to microchip
their dog and register them with a government compliant
microchip database.
From 6 April 2016:
All puppies in England and Wales must be microchipped by the time
they are 8 weeks old
The breeder must always be the first recorded keeper of the puppies
It will be illegal for breeders to sell a puppy that is not microchipped
and recorded on a government compliant microchip database, such
as Petlog
The breeder must provide microchipping documents to the puppy
buyer to ensure the new owner can update their details in order to
comply with the law. Breeders must ensure that the microchip paperwork
matches the puppy being sold to the new owner
It is worth noting that the microchipping regulations do not affect the
requirement for collars and tags as part of the Control of Dogs Order
1992.
THE LAKELAND TERRIER.
History of the Breed
Origins The breed takes its name from the area known as
The Lake District. The Lake District is Britain’s largest Natural Park
covering an area of some 800 plus square miles of outstanding
natural beauty, there are 16 very large lakes, the 4 highest mountains
Scafell, Scawfell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw with another 35
mountains all over 2.500 feet above sea level.
The breed origins are surrounded in the mists of time, early travel
was difficult in the region and few travelled beyond their local
boundaries this is where the local huntsman and fellsman developed
their strain of a working terrier which took the name of their location.
These dogs worked the fells, borans and screes in conditions only
the hardiest of dogs could survive, the purpose of the Lakeland terrier
was to follow the hunt which, in the Lake District is on foot, to
dispatch the fox if he goes to ground. Each location of the Lake District
had its own named terrier for example: Ulswater, Patterdale,
Cumberland plus many more. The Lakeland Terrier representing the
area from where it originated was recognised by the Kennel Club in
1928 following the formation of a club in 1921.
The popularity of the LakelandTerrier peaked during the 1940s to
the early 1960s, since then the breed has varied in numbers registered.
The breed has had many famous owners, recent owners being Bill
Cosby who has a large show kennel in the USA and here designer
Cath Kidston whose dog Stanley (now deceased) has been used in
numerous designs. The combination of terrier and intelligence
means that discipline is required from an early age, if you want a dog
that settles in front of the fire (if you move they move always alert)
then it’s not for you.
The Lakeland Terrier is an intelligent dog, who has to display a fearless
nature but not a quarrelsome nature, likes to be part of the family,
he will walk for many miles to be with you, likes travelling, playing
and is always young at heart

Page 73
Lakelands do not moult but requires hand stripping to maintain the
harsh coat. It is also one of the few breeds that have no recorded
inherent health issues; overall the Lakeland Terrier is a large dog in a
small body.
As a show dog the breed although numerically small has a very high
success rate, when groomed for the show ring the Lakeland Terrier is
a very handsome and striking sight, there are three breed clubs for
the breed across the country. The size of the Lakeland Terrier is 14.5
inches at the shoulder making it the smaller of the long legged terriers,
the dog is square in shape with no exaggerations and has overall
balance. The harsh double coat has several colours but the main
colours are black and tan, grizzle and red with a black coated dogs
creeping in.
What enthusiasts like about the Lakeland Terrier is the character, a
cheerful rascal who is quick in movement, always on the tip-toe of
expectation, who is hardy, tireless, affectionate and has the ability to
be loveable and naughty at the same time. It is essential that the
Lakeland Terrier is made aware of the house rules from the beginning
as bad habits are easily made and difficult to correct, a just William
of the canine world. The life span is between 12 and 14 years
although on occasions can live to 16-17.
Lakeland Terriers can be suited to many life styles so long as a few
basic rules are applied and maintained.
CH Stingray of Derryabah is one of the few dogs to win Best in Show
at Crufts and Westminster USA, Ch Rogerholme Recruit was the only
other Lakeland Terrier to win the top spot at Crufts, the breed has
been gifted with many top kennels and professional handlers, Alan
Johnson whose family are steeped in Lakeland history are still showing
under the Oregill affix , one of the top kennels being the Saredon
the late Judy Averis had many Champions. John Averis now carrying
on the family tradition. Rayfos is another very successful kennel with
Philip Greenway. The recent breed record holder Ch Louieville Red
Prince owned and handled by Wendy Johnston.
The Lakeland Terrier is an English native breed with so much to offer
to those that want a neat, compact and handsome dog. Joe Ashe.

Back to Basics: A Comparison of the Lakeland Terrier and the Welsh Terrier
There are many more differences between the Lakeland Terrier and Welsh
Terrier than the Lakeland's "fall." Learn more about the differences in this
instalment of "Back to Basics."
By Connie Clark | September 25, 2013.
LAKELAND
WELSH
Lakeland Terriers have a "fall," hair that is left longer over the eye, which
gives them protection while pursuing prey. The head proportions of both
breeds are critical to correct type, and there are many other differences
between the breeds. Is it a Lakeland, or is it a Welsh? If undecided, just
look for the "fall." While this statement is true, there is much more that differentiates
these two breeds.
These are both very old workngTerrier breeds. The Lakeland, kept by farmers,
was bred and worked in the Lake District of northern England destroying
the foxes found raiding the sheep. In earlier times it was known as the
Fell or Patterdale Terrier.
The early Dandie Dinmont, Bedlington and Border Terriers are some of its
remote ancestors. The Welsh, more commonly known then as the Old English
Terrier or Black and Tan Wirehaired Terrier, was used in its native Wales
for hunting the otter, fox and badger. The Welsh is one of the oldest purebred
Terriers and has changed very slightly from the working Terrier found
several hundred years ago in the high mountains and valleys of Wales With
these tasks, gameness was the top priority among the early breeders. Lakelands
needed to be game enough to withstand the punishment delivered by
the foxes in their rocky mountain lairs. Here hunting was done on foot, as
the foxes were found in crevices or in rocky tunnels along the hillsides.

Page 75
The Welsh had to possess the characteristic gameness required while
showing spirit and courage when facing the badger, otter and fox. In Wales,
hunting was done on horseback along with the hounds where the fox was
found in the ground.
Around 1830, these northern counties had many varieties of Terriers each
named after the locality with the greatest numbers. Cumberland is the birthplace
of the Lakeland, and in 1912, a meeting of Fell Terrier breeders was
called at Keswick, and the name Lakeland Terrier was given to the improved
types being shown in the Lake District. After WWI, fanciers met in
1921 in Cumberland, had a standard drawn up, and the breed became eligible
for registration in the Kennel Club (England). AKC first recognized
Lakeland Terriers in 1934.
Welsh Terriers were first recorded in England at the Caernarvon show in
1884-1885. At that time, it was not uncommon for dogs to be shown as Old
English Terriers and also as Welsh Terriers.
In 1886, the Welsh Terrier Club of Great Britain was formed, making it the
oldest club representing the Welsh Terrier. A pair of Welsh first arrived on
these shores in 1885, and a later account mentions a dog and bitch
brought to the US by Prescott Lawrence in 1888 that were shown at the old
Madison Square Garden in the Miscellaneous Class. The Welsh Terrier Club
of America was founded in 1900.
Size and Proportion
The Lakeland Terrier ideally should stand 14 1/2 inches from the withers to
the ground with bitches measuring as much as 1 inch less than dogs. In
hard working condition, the weight of a mature dog is approximately 16 to
17 pounds. Balance and proportion are key. Its appearance is small, sturdy
and workmanlike. The Lakeland Terrier is the essence of moderation and
not a breed of extremes.
In Welsh Terriers, dogs measure between 15 and 15 1/2 inches at the withers,
with bitches proportionally smaller. Depending on the height and density
of bone, 20 pounds is considered an average weight. In both dogs and
bitches, there should be an appearance of a medium-sized, solid dog of
good substance.
It is said of Lakelands that wherever the head fits through, the body must
follow. The neck is long, clean at the throat and slightly arched, widening
into the well-angulated shoulders. There should be sufficient bone and muscle
throughout, making a flat, smooth transition from the neck over the
shoulders without any lumps or coarseness. The oval chest is moderately
narrow and deep with well-sprung ribs allowing for ample heart and lung

Page 76
capacity. A big bodied, barrelchested
dog would not be
able to go into the narrow
tunnels, which Lakelands
have been known to go into
sideways in order to reach
their prey.
The top line is short and level
with the pelvic shelf is behind
the tail.
A broad, well-defined pelvic
shelf is behind the tail.
In the Welsh, the slightly arched neck of moderate length and thickness
slopes gracefully into the well-laid-back shoulders, and the clean throat
shows no excess skin. Bred for power and endurance rather than speed,
the Welsh has a broader, compact "square" shape. The well-ribbed body
of good substance has good depth of brisket and moderate width of
chest. The strong loin is moderately short, and the topline is level. To complete
the square image of the dog, the tail is docked to a length approximately
level with the occiput, with the root of the tail set well up on the
back.
Legs and Feet
Good legs and feet were essential
to both breeds. In
Lakelands, the elbows are
held close to the body when
standing and moving. The
forelegs, when viewed from
the front or side, are straight,
strong and clean with no appreciable
bend at the pasterns.
The round feet, with
strong, compact toes, point
forward. The pads are thick
and black or dark gray except
in liver-colored dogs, where
they are brown. Strong nails
are black or self-coloured with
To best pursue its prey underground, wherever
the head of a Lakeland fits through, the
body must follow; therefore this breed must
have a moderately narrow, deep chest with
well-sprung ribs.
Welsh Terriers were bred for power and endurance,
and this breed has a more broad,
compact "square" shape than the Lakeland.

Page 77
dewclaws removed.
The muscular legs on the Welsh are straight with upright and powerful pasterns.
The catlike feet are round and small with thick black pads. The nails
are strong and black with dewclaws removed.
Lakeland thighs are well muscled and powerful with hind legs well angulated,
though not too much as to affect the balance between front and rear.
Stifles turn neither in nor out. The distance from the hock to the ground is
relatively short, being parallel to each other when viewed from the rear.
Feet are the same as the front.
Welsh hindquarters are muscular and strong with well-developed second
thighs and well-bent stifles. The moderately straight hocks are parallel and
short from the joint to the ground. Feet are the same as the forequarters.
Head
The Lakeland head should be strong, workmanlike and without coarseness,
while moderate in length and breadth. Although typically alert, the expression
of the Lakeland depends on the mood of the moment. Softer than that
of the Welsh, it may be intense and determined, or gay and mischievous.
The moderately small, oval-shaped eyes are set squarely in the skull fairly
wide apart. In liver or liver-and-tan dogs, the eyes are dark hazel to warm
brown with brown eye rims. All other colors have warm brown to black eyes
with dark rims. The small, V-shaped ears fold just above the top of the skull,
with the inner edge close to the side of the head kissing the cheek, flap
pointing toward the outside corner of the eye. The ear leather is slightly
finer than that on the Welsh. The proportions of the head are critical to correct
type. The Lakeland's moderately broad skull is flat on top with cheeks
smooth and flat, and the stop is barely visible. The strong muzzle, with a
straight, broad nose bridge, has good fill beneath the eyes and good under
jaw. The well-balanced, rectangular head is achieved when the length of
skull equals the length of muzzle when measured from occiput to stop and
stop to nose tip. The foreface should never be too long or short and wedgeshaped.
The nose is black and lips dark, with liver-colored noses and lips on
liver-coated dogs only. Although not desired, a "winter nose" with faded pigment
is permitted, while a pink or distinctly spotted nose is very undesirable.
Jaws have to be strong and powerful with large teeth in order to dispatch
the prey. A level or scissors bite is required, while teeth overshot or
undershot is a disqualification.
The head of the Welsh, in proportion to the body, is powerfully made, being
boxy rather than wedge-shaped. The entire head is rectangular with small, dark
brown, almond-shaped eyes set well in the skull and placed fairly far apart. It is
the shape, size, color and position of the eyes that give the expression that is
typical of the Welsh.

Page 78
The ears should also be small and V-shaped, but not too thin, having more
leather than the Lakeland and folding above the topline of the skull. They
are carried forward close to the cheek, tips falling forward toward the outside
corner of the eye when at rest and moving slightly up and forward
when at attention.
The strong, powerful, punishing jaws make up the foreface, which is only
slightly narrower than the back skull. The foreface in front of the eyes is
well-made-up. Similar to the Lakeland, the Welsh also has a slight stop, and
the back skull is of equal length to the foreface with parallel planes when in
profile. It is also smooth and flat and free from wrinkles between the ears.
Cheeks are clean and flat. Never snipey, the muzzle is strong and squared
off, and the black nose is also squared off, with lips black and tight. While a
scissors bite is preferred, a level bite is acceptable with complete dentition
consisting of large, strong teeth.
Earlier Welsh Terriers were simple and plain dogs, and in the 1930s and
'40s, breeders introduced the Fox Terriert o clean up and stylize the head.
Coat and Colour
To the early breeders, the color of Lakelands did not matter and was secondary
as long as they were game. The double coat is dense and wiry with a
soft undercoat, neat and workmanlike with abundant crisp furnishings on
the legs and muzzle. The "fall," hair left longer over the eyes, gives the head
a rectangular appearance and protection when working. Looking from the
front, the eyes are clearly visible and give the unique mischievous Lakeland
expression.
There are a variety of colors, both saddle-marked and solid, that are acceptable.
Solid colors include red, wheaten, blue, black and liver, and saddlemarked
colors are black & tan, blue & tan, grizzle & tan, liver & tan and red
grizzle. The furnishings should be golden or wheaten as compared to the
deep reddish tan on the Welsh. It can be difficult on the black Lakeland to
get a good black undercoat, as it appears to be sooty.
In 1450, a Welsh poet referred to a "good black red-bellied bitch of rich red
tan," and known in older times as the Black-and-Tan Wirehaired Terrier, the
Welsh today is the same color as it was more than 100 years ago. The coat
with its close-fitting, thick jacket is hard, wiry and dense. There is a short,
soft undercoat with furnishings on the legs, muzzle and hindquarters that
are dense and wiry. The black jacket (grizzle is also acceptable) spreads up
onto the neck, down onto the tail and onto the upper thighs. The furnishings
found on the head, legs and hindquarters are a deep reddish tan with
slightly lighter shades acceptable.

Page 79
The 1940s and '50s saw the Welsh transformed into a fancier, shorterbacked
dog with a cleaner head, smaller ears and better double coats.
Movement
Being a flexible and athletic breed, the Lakeland Terrier should cover
ground easily and efficiently with a straightforward free stride of good reach
and drive. On the go, the legs should be straight with feet turning neither in
nor out. The elbows should be held close to the sides in front with hocks
straight behind.
Used extensively in Wales as a sporting dog, Welsh movement is also
straight, free and effortless with good reach in front and strong drive behind.
Both breeds tend to converge toward a center line of gravity or a median
line of travel as the dog moves faster and the speed increases.
Temperament
Despite its gameness and courage, the typical Lakeland has an attractive,
quiet disposition. This breed is bold, friendly and confident and should not
be overly aggressive. The Lakeland Terrier makes a gentle and loving companion.
Although game and alert, the Welsh is not quarrelsome and has all the gaiety,
fire and courage of a true Terrier, along with the dignity and common
sense of the larger working breeds. Being well-mannered and easy to handle
and train makes this breed an ideal family companion.
Secretary’s / Treasures Report 2015.
2015 was a year for celebrating the MLTC 30 years as a numerically
small breed, not easy these days with so much competition
re: many other Dog Shows and Seminars taking place most weekends,
with so much choice it is inevitable that numerically small
Breeds will suffer and find it difficult to justify the amount of money
that it costs to put on a dog show these days, if you look at the Accounts
opposite you can see that without Donations financially or
in kind we could not balance the books, it costs almost the same
to finance an Open Show as it does a Championship Show but in
general the entries and attendance are lower for the Open Show
and this is where the Judges List is invaluable to support up and
coming Judges, they need your entries if they are to progress any
further and for the club to continue with Open Shows.
We count our selves very fortunate that so far we have received a
great deal of support from Members and Exhibitors and this was
evident at our shows this year, we were able to with the help of
donations provide Exhibitors with free Anniversary Ring Clips and
Members who attended also received New Membership Badges.
We hope that you will enjoy our Yearbook as it contains many photos
to commemorate this special year in particular for our members
who were not able to be with us, our face book page also contains
these photos so take a look sometime www.mltc.org.uk
Committee Members Gail and Sadie are busy making Special Lakie
items that will be available for sale at Crufts and our show on the
20th March this year.
We also acknowledge the great deal of support that we enjoy from
our small band of Officers and Committee Members who are generous
to a fault and without their donations and hard work on the
day to the show we would show a deficit.
We hope to see as many Members as possible this year and you
will always receive a very warm welcome from everyone involved.
Helen.

LAKELAND TERRIER BREED STANDARD.
All Standards will include the following introductory paragraph from January 2009.
A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament
and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function.
Absolute soundness is essential.
Breeders and Judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations
which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this
breed.
From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential
to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and Judges and breeders are requested to
refer to the kennel Club website for details of any such current issues.
If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure.
