Dear Parents,<br />
You have traversed through the path of life, sometimes faced by abundance of ecstasy and sometimes despair. Some<br />
of us have always been haunted by hopelessness and despair, but there we see someone who is always a winner for<br />
life. Have we tried to understand whether they were born to be winners or have fought the battle themselves to reach<br />
there?<br />
We never have taught ourselves or our children to celebrate the awesomeness called life. I happened to chance on a<br />
write up by a well-known motivated speaker who said that she woke up everyday to a day that would be glorious and<br />
a task that would discover the joy of living. It struck a chord as I looked back to realize that every moment of<br />
happiness was what I created for myself and not what came to me by chance.<br />
Each e ort that I made to make others happy was a celebration of my life, I don't know whether it was the same for<br />
others. So let's wake up telling ourselves it's going to be an awesome day and transfer that spirit of exuberance to our<br />
children as they go about their day. At the end of the day let's ask them 'Child, what was awesome about your day<br />
today?' . Let's not discuss the gloomy part of the day. at was a phase I would teach them to obliterate from their life ,<br />
accept it in a positive spirit , learn from it and not sulk over it.<br />
Let us get up to a task that I would enjoy and not let my children to brood over a task that might appear<br />
overwhelming to them. Let us teach them to enjoy the journey called life. Let us not bog them down with the<br />
inevitable pressures of life. e pressures of life are an integral part of the celebration of life and let each of us learn to<br />
accept it in the true spirit of life.<br />
Where could I start? Why not help my child discover his strength and overcome his weakness. Let him get up to say<br />
'Wow' I can do this well' Let us not show him the negative side of his life by trying to probe the darker chapters of his<br />
life. It wouldn't be so dark if we as adults did not interfere in his day to day activities, his relations and his mundane<br />
experiences of life. Your child is an individual by himself and let him blossom to conquer the world and be successful<br />
in his own right.<br />

programmes and qualifications. Cambridge programmes and qualifications<br />

Cambridge programmes includes<br />

Cambridge Advanced for learners aged 16-19 years(Grades 11-12)<br />
Cambridge Primary years programme develops learner skills and understanding through the primary years in<br />
English, mathematics and science. It provides natural progression to Secondary 1 programme.<br />
Cambridge Secondary 1 provides first 3 years of secondary education and makes a strong foundation for<br />
IGCSE.<br />
Cambridge Checkpoint tests have been designed to assess learning at the end of Cambridge Secondary 1.<br />
They are available in English, mathematics and science, and give valuable feedback on learners’ strengths and<br />
weaknesses before they progress to the next stage of education. It provides evidence of readiness for the next<br />
stage.<br />
The tests are marked in Cambridge and provide schools with an external international benchmark for learner<br />
performance. Each learner receives a statement of achievement and a diagnostic feedback report, giving schools<br />
detailed information and parents extra trust in the feedback they receive.<br />
<strong>Pinnacle</strong> conducts Cambridge Checkpoint test series each year in May for Grade 8 students. The tests cover all<br />
major areas of learning in the Cambridge Secondary 1 curriculum frameworks for English, mathematics and science.<br />
Feedback reports<br />
<strong>School</strong>s use the feedback from Cambridge Checkpoint to make strategic decisions, drawing upon a pool of information<br />
and specialist reporting tools that are built into the tests.<br />
Learner report<br />
The report on a learner gives:<br />
· A Cambridge Checkpoint score for the whole subject<br />
· A Cambridge Checkpoint score for each main topic/skill<br />
· A list of the questions (and the sub-topics/skills) where the candidate’s performance was particularly<br />
strong or particularly weak<br />
· A statement of achievement.<br />
End-of-session report<br />
The end-of-session report gives the results of the whole cohort, from all schools worldwide, broken down by age<br />
and first language, so that schools can compare their own results with those of similar learners. The report also<br />
gives the examiner’s comments on the test.<br />
Cambridge Secondary 2 (IGCSE) offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum. For learners, Cambridge IGCSE<br />
helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It is the perfect<br />
springboard to advanced study.<br />
The syllabuses are international in outlook, but retain a local relevance. They have been created specifically for<br />
an international student body and avoid cultural bias.<br />

“What a beautiful child!” the parents exclaim over their new<br />
baby. Thus begins a life-long relationship of unconditional love<br />
and support that is essential for the child to thrive and develop.<br />
This nurturing is the foundation for the sense of security and<br />
self-esteem that directly affects a child¹s ability to achieve<br />
success later, to learn.<br />
And then the questions arise to the parents…. Are we doing the<br />
right thing? Are we overdoing or are we not giving enough to<br />
our little one? Are we a balanced Parent…….<br />
The Secret to becoming a Balanced Parent….<br />
It is extremely important to be balanced in the way we love our family—especially our children.<br />
The purpose for understanding our natural parenting style is so that it can help us balance the hard<br />
and soft sides of love. Hardside love is doing what’s best for our children regardless of the cost. Held in<br />
balance, it’s the ability to be consistent, to discipline, to protect, to challenge and to correct. Softside love<br />
is a tenderness that grows to be the same colour as unconditional love. When held in balance, softside<br />
love manifests characteristics like compassion, sensitivity, patience and understanding.<br />
Parenting is like the thorns on the rose …each are incomplete without each other.<br />
A mature parent, successfully nurture both secures attachment and responsible autonomy.<br />
Providing only one side of love can cause real problems in the developments of a child. As we<br />
learn to be balanced, it will help us give our children two very important things.<br />
1. A commitment to love in a warm, affectionate, and supportive way.<br />
2. Establishing clearly defined and understood rules in the home, limits that the children know they<br />
cannot violate without some consequence.<br />

WARMTH (soft side)<br />
• Engage with and enjoy your children<br />
• Notice and appreciate their better side.<br />
• When they are upset – stop and listen.<br />
CONSISTENCY (Hard side)<br />

Do you wish to Balance Your Unique Parenting Style? Make a Note…<br />
The first step in attempting to become balanced parent is to be aware of our natural parenting tendencies.<br />
Question yourself:- Is it easy for me to be hard on problems when relating to my child? Or do I rarely<br />
move beyond the softside, unwilling to confront my child or take the lead? Do I hesitate to act, even<br />
when I know I should be firm and others need me to be strong?<br />
For the parent who desires a balance between the hard and soft sides of love, we encourage you to sit<br />
down with your family and make a very important list.<br />
On a sheet of paper write your ‘Strengths’ and ‘Weaknesses’. Make a list of all your natural strengths.<br />
Now let’s understand our greatest parenting weaknesses, which generally are our strengths pushed to<br />
extreme.<br />
Another helpful thing to do would be to list possible ways that your strengths--if pushed to an extreme-<br />
-could become weaknesses or potential problems.<br />
Listing would help us to become aware of how our strengths that can become weaknesses if pushed out<br />
of balance. Discussing the specific ways will help us move our weaknesses back into balance.<br />
It’s time to reflect on your parenting… Are you imbalanced? Are you a soft parent only? Do you only look<br />
at being only particular about discipline? Do you most of the time get swayed…? Periodically reviewing<br />
the list helps us gauge how we’re doing in our attempt to become a balanced parent.<br />
If you’ve ever wished for a fairy Godmother to wave her magic wand and make you an<br />
instantly better parent, these six parenting pointers might be what you’ve been dreaming of.<br />
Thus what I could gather was….. ‘Parenting is about being more positive, increasing warmth<br />
and involvement, whilst<br />
managing the balance in being consistent with boundaries and enforcing reasonable<br />

Father’s Day-Fun with our ‘Master-Chefs’<br />
Father’s Day is one of the most special days celebrated in the school to make fathers feel special. The kids enjoy<br />
every moment of the attention they get from their Dads. 22nd June morning was very special for PHIS as all the<br />
fathers of pre-primary, Grade 1 and Grade 2 were all set to explore their culinary skills along with their kids. It was<br />
indeed a healthy and delicious Saturday brunch for us by our Mr. and Master Chefs. The special Game Zone set up by<br />
teachers, for all the fathers to spend time, chill and enjoy with their little ones, after a hard and stressed the cooking<br />
experience was relaxing. The twosome, ‘Papas’ and the ‘Bacchas’ enjoyed playing games like “Feeding the Joker”<br />
and joining huge “Smiley Jigsaw Puzzles.” They dressed their choice of costumes (animal costumes) and used props<br />
like masks, glares, wigs, animal headgears, smiley puppets and many more to get clicked.<br />
‘World Tiger Day’ -29th July - Save The Tiger<br />
World Tiger day as we all know is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation. It is held<br />
annually on the 29th July. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit. The goal of the day is to<br />
promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise<br />
public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.<br />
Best out of Waste – Preprimary<br />
The little Kiwis were educated on how important it is as citizens to be aware of<br />
our nature. SAVE the TIGER awareness was brainstormed in class. Tiger are getting<br />
extinct day by day. Children made ‘Best out of Waste’ and related their ideas to<br />
spread message of saving our national animal. They enjoyed and participated in the<br />
competition and were motivated to be aware of our environment.<br />
Poster Making Competition – Foundation and Grade 1<br />
On this day our school organized a ‘Poster Making Competition for the children<br />
on ‘Save the Tiger’. The children portrayed extremely impressive and outstanding<br />
posters on ‘Save the tiger’ and provided amazing messages along with it. The best posters were appreciated and the<br />
winners received certificates for winning the competition.<br />
Rainbow Fest – 5th to 7th August ‘13<br />
‘Rain clouds come floating in, not to muddy my days ahead, but to make me calm, happy and hopeful’, The<br />
spectacular season enthralled the school to celebrate a special week as “Rainbow Fest week” from 5th August’13 to<br />
8th August’13. The young Kiwi Pinnacli’tes has surely got Talent. They displayed their dancing and singing skills by<br />
participating in different talent competitions. Children experienced the little drops of rain on their little hands and<br />
feet and loved the rain walk on 8th August’13.<br />
Pot Decoration – 27th August‘13<br />
It was Janmashtmi time, a day where people celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna with great joy and galore. The<br />
Youngest Kiwis enjoyed decorating their ‘Handis’ (pots) and filling it with artificial ‘butter’. They related their action<br />
to that of Lord Krishna favourite sport. On 27th August’2013 the students of Reception and Foundation came all set<br />
to display their creativity for decorating the pots.<br />
Celebrating Christmas at PHIS - 20th December‘13<br />
Giving tree<br />
Every year Christmas at <strong>Pinnacle</strong> is celebrated with Pomp n Show. This is a time of sharing and giving happiness<br />
and joy to all around us. To accentuate this fact the ‘Giving Tree’ event was organized from 18th<br />
December in which children brought small and big gifts, generously to be given to the poor and<br />
privileged children.<br />
Pattern Designing on Mitten Decoration<br />
The pattern designing competition gave the young minds an insight<br />
of how patterns could be created and they learnt to make pairing objects.<br />
The beautifully designed mittens were displayed for winter and kids loved<br />
receiving their certificates.<br />
COMPETITIONs for the little Learners<br />
Puzzle Competition – 20th September’13<br />
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the<br />
world on 21st September. World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not the<br />
absence of violence; peace is the manifestation of human compassion. This International<br />
peace day was celebrated on 20th September, 2013 by solving puzzle - ‘Let’s fix the world piece by piece’.<br />
Doh Art Competition – 7th October’13<br />
Dough art not only enhances the fine motor skills, but also gives an opportunity to the child to think creatively.<br />
It is a wonderful and an exciting medium of learning that keeps young minds going. The school<br />
organized the “Doh Competition” for the Kiwis on 7th October ’13 to represent animal habitat day.<br />
All the children participated very enthusiastically and created beautiful animals.<br />
Kite Making Competition – 10th January‘14<br />
India is the country of festivals. The colourful kite-flying festival of Makar Sankranti or<br />
Uttarayan, which falls on January 14 each year, was celebrated by organizing kite decoration<br />
competition for the students in school. The children were excited to bring handmade kites from<br />
their home and to illustrate any flying objects on it. The little Kiwi’tes was given the opportunity to<br />
showcase their drawing skills which was indeed awesome.<br />
Handwriting Competition – 27th January‘14<br />
It is always breathtaking to see our little ones grow at different stages, like scribbling, strokes,<br />
patterns, letter formation, line alignment, word writing and then moving on to handwriting. The<br />

Igatpuri Trip<br />
Students of Grades 3-IG SR went for an overnight trip to Igatpuri in the month of December. The trip to<br />
Igatpuri was fun filled. We visited various places. On our first day, we visited the meditation center. It<br />
had a calming effect on us. We learnt many moral values from a learned gentleman. On the second day,<br />
we went to the famous Gargoti museum. It was a delight to see all the historical gems in various shapes<br />
and forms. They were on sale too, so many of us purchased it. After visiting the museum, at night, we<br />
had an enthralling DJ party and a campfire with exciting games. The next day we visited Bhandardara<br />
dam. The view of this scenic beauty was breath taking. Later we played few more games and returned<br />
to our school and departed with sweet memories.<br />

Children’s day celebration<br />
The children’s day was celebrated in the school with lot of fanfare. The students were very excited to see<br />
what their dear teachers had put up. There were humour filled plays and amazing Miss- Match Fashion<br />
show and dances put up by the teachers. All the students enjoyed this day to the fullest. They were also<br />
given delicious chocolates and cakes .The day ended with an inspiring speech delivered by our Principal.<br />

Farewell party<br />
Students of CP & IG Jr bid farewell to the students of standard IG-Sr. Beginning with the event, we had<br />
fun-filled games. Right after the fun, teachers presented special cards exquisitely made for the beloved<br />
students of IG Sr. Later, refreshments were served to everyone. As time passed, everyone was moved<br />
to tears by the mere thought of leaving their friends and teachers. When it was time to leave, everyone<br />
departed home with nostalgic memories of their good-old days at <strong>Pinnacle</strong> High…<br />

INVESTITURE CEREMONY<br />
The Investiture ceremony for the session 2013-14 was a special occasion where school entrusted certain<br />
responsibilities on the upcoming leaders. The special occasion started off with a beautiful prayer song.<br />
After this our dearest Principal, Mrs.Suchita Malakar handed over badges to the office bearers. Each<br />
student pledged to follow the rules and regulations of the school. They also pledged to keep the flag of<br />
our school, always, flying high. This was followed by our national anthem and also a speech by our new<br />
head girl Megna Nathani and head boy,Meet Jain, Principal Ma’am and also last year’s i.e. 2012-13 head<br />
girl and head boy, Evita-Marie-Marques and Pransh Kachalia.<br />
This would always be a memorable day for all the office bearers.<br />

<strong>School</strong> Elections<br />
It was in the month of July that school elections took place. All the children who were participating in the<br />
Election made colorful charts with slogans on it to make the other children vote for them .Finally that<br />
day arrived, where all had to vote for their favorite house candidates. It was really tough to decide one<br />
person as all of them could be friends but, all the children were ready with their favorite senior and junior<br />
house captains. After the elections, everyone started predicting who would be the house captains, and<br />
finally the results arrived. Meet Jain and Megna Nathani became the head boy and head girl, followed by<br />
house captains and discipline prefects. Elections will always be a fun time to remember.<br />

Sports day<br />
The 9th Annual Sports Day of <strong>Pinnacle</strong> High International <strong>School</strong>, held on 24th January at Sai<br />
Authority of India was filled with joy and enthusiasm. The morning was graced by a veritable dazzle of<br />
guests that comprised the Chief guest - Commodore Madhusoidanan. Sports day teaches us cooperation,<br />
team work, sportsmanship and a lot more. It is the day when one learns a lesson that winning or losing<br />
doesn’t matter but one must participate and give his or her best. This day began with a very inspirational<br />
speech given by the Principal and a welcome speech accompanied by a welcome song for our chief guest.<br />
The flag was lifted, the drums rolled and the march-past, a must for every sports day began. The parents<br />
were delighted to see their students marching proudly with Great Spirit.<br />
There was a drill display by the primary and secondary students followed by a spectacular performance<br />
that described the devotion and nationalism as Sports Day coincided with Republic Day. Finally, the most<br />
awaited moment struck in- ‘the races’, where students learnt sportsmanship and faced good competition.<br />
Students from different houses gave their best to make their house win the shield. Parents were filled<br />
with happiness observing their child run.<br />
There were various events and competitions held before concluding to the best house which was<br />
surprisingly the Amethyst house who won after 8 long years... Finally the day came to an end and this<br />
Sports Day was a real success.<br />

Teachers’ day celebration:<br />
The teachers’ day was celebrated with enthusiasm at <strong>Pinnacle</strong> High International <strong>School</strong>.<br />
On this day, the secondary students were given the responsibility of teaching the pre-primary and primary<br />
students.On this occasion, there was a programme conducted by students which included various kinds’<br />
of dances, songs and speeches. Students dedicated speeches about the importance of Teacher’<br />
s Day and also about the importance of teachers in our life. In the end, all the teachers were honoured<br />
by Ms Suchita Malakar, the Principal of our school and she also thanked all the students for making the<br />
programme a grand success.<br />

Winter Carnival<br />
The <strong>Pinnacle</strong> High carnival was a great success. It witnessed many visitors who enjoyed themselves. There<br />
were many wonderful stalls set up by both parents, students as well as the teachers. The exciting games<br />
thrilled the visitors. The atmosphere was filled with the aroma of some mouth watering and delicious<br />
snacks. For the junior students there was a big jumping jack. There was a breathtaking performance by<br />
the wonderful stars of Grade KS-3. All in all, it was a fun –filled day for all present.<br />

Celebrating Christmas at PHIS - 20th December‘13<br />
Giving tree<br />
Every year Christmas at <strong>Pinnacle</strong> is celebrated with Pomp n Show. This is a time of sharing and<br />
giving happiness and joy to all around us. To accentuate this fact the ‘Giving Tree’ event was organized<br />
from 18th December in which children brought small and big gifts, generously to be given to the poor and<br />
privileged children. The name tags of the donors were hung on the tree which made the tree look even<br />
more beautiful as it glowed with the happiness of emphatic children around it. Bags full of gifts were sent<br />
to the different orphanage where the children enjoyed the eve of Christmas by receiving beautiful gifts.<br />
The love, passion and kindheartedness that our little children displayed were awe-inspiring.<br />
Integration week<br />
<strong>Pinnacle</strong> High pedagogy emphasizes on enquiry based teaching. Those who promote enquiry often<br />
describe the ease with which it allows for the integration of the curriculum. As students move through<br />
the process of enquiry, they can draw on several ways of investigating and expressing their growing<br />
understanding of integrating skills and content from multiple disciplines or learning areas. We had<br />
‘Integration week’ in the month of January wherein we integrated various subjects like Math, English,<br />
Science, ICT and Social Studies along with enquiry topics. It was hugely enjoyed by students and well<br />

Parent Teacher Art competition<br />
On the occasion of Parent Day our school had organized Parent-Teacher Art competition on 26th<br />
July. Parents of kids from Headstart to Grade 5 enthusiastically participated in this competition. Parents<br />
along with teachers were subdivided into four groups of Spiderman, Superman, Batman and Ironman.<br />
The theme for the competition was ‘Vision of Our Child’s World’. Parents along with teachers made a<br />
poster on the given theme and presented their view, which was then judged by our Principal Mrs. Suchita<br />
Malakar and our Art teacher Ms Mansi. The Groups put up their art talent and beautifully illustrated their<br />
idea and views of their child’s vision.<br />
Art Exhibition<br />
The school enjoyed organizing a Cultural Exhibition as Diwali was around the corner. On the<br />
theme of ‘Art around the World’, our artists of Pre- Primary were engrossed in Indian Art. They painted<br />
Diyas, made Warli bookmarks and decorative Torans to sell for Diwali. The themes for Primary students<br />
were Japan, China and the African continent. They crafted paper jewellery , handmade pen stands and<br />
coasters of Egyptian design. Whereas, the Secondary artists displayed their skill on canvas with the<br />
‘Indian theme’ of Warli painting. The exhibition garnered overwhelming response from all parents. Our<br />
young exhibitors enjoyed selling their products for a cause and thus making it a huge success. This event<br />
not only encouraged all the students and teachers to put up more good work for exhibition in future but<br />
also taught us a message of social cause as all the amount collected was donated to an orphanage in<br />
Marve. The children were taken personally to hand over the collected amount.
Simulation<br />
A programme titled ‘Scintillating Simulation’ was organized by <strong>Pinnacle</strong> High to showcase knowledge and skills<br />
acquired by the students of Primary grades. As you are aware, our curriculum is primarily based on Bloom’s<br />
Taxonomy and Multiple Intelligence Theory. One of the integral parts of our teaching methodology is<br />
‘Simulation’. Simulation in education is a replacement model for real world experiences. Educational simulations<br />
are used for various general purposes in education.<br />
• They raise student interest.<br />
• They enable a deeper sense of experiential reality for experiences that might otherwise be expensive or dan<br />
gerous to the student.<br />
• They enrich the learning.<br />
• They are often memorable.<br />

Secondary picnic to IMAGICA<br />
On 30th January our school took us to Adlabs Imagica which is<br />
almost a 3hr.30 minutes long drive, the journey might be long but<br />
it sure is fun. As we entered a thrill of excitement ran down our<br />
backs. As we walked around Imagica to reach the first ride we<br />
took a lot of photos, the first ride we went on was salim ghar also<br />
known as haunted house, it was a 6 seater ride it was really scary.<br />
We also sat in many other rides like Bandits of Robin hood, Wrath<br />
of Gods etc. Then we had lunch at the IMAGICA CAPITAL. It was a<br />
really fun day for all of us. After reaching school, we bid adieu to<br />
our friends, said thank you to our teachers for this awesome day<br />
and went home with sweet memories.<br />

Primary picnic to Kidzania<br />
Students of Grades 1-4 went to Kidzania for picnic. They zoomed to<br />
Kidzania in a bus and reached there in few hours. Refreshments were<br />
given during this journey.<br />
Kidzania is in Ghatkopar in R-City Mall. While they were standing in<br />
queue, Kidzania staff gave them a bracelet to wear on their wrist and a<br />
Yes bank cheque. Then they had to give that cheque at the counter to<br />
get ther kidzos(money). Then finally they could entered Kidzania.<br />
First they did face painting followed by pottery making. Few students<br />
went for dancing and acting to earn more kidzos. Later on, they went to<br />
make donuts and coca-cola. While making donuts they had to take the<br />
dough and dip it in chocolate sauce. For coca-cola they took the syrup<br />
and mixed it with water. Then it was time for lunch. They were served<br />
with delicious Pav Bhaji, noodles, fries and sauce.<br />
With loads of knowledge and sweet memories all the students left Kidzania in the afternoon.<br />

I am sure this will come as a surprise to you, knowing me and my love for writing.<br />
But today, on this Fathers’ Day, I decided to do something out of my way for someone<br />
who always goes out of his way to see me happy and smiling.<br />
When I was a child, I didn’t understand how hard you worked to provide everything<br />
you wanted me to have. Some might say that’s a Parent’s job…but looking back, those<br />
long drives you took me late in the night, after getting back home from a tired day of<br />
work, so that I can sleep peacefully, is much more than you needed to.<br />
Not just then, even now, when I get bored and need a friend to play with, you<br />
give me your valuable time and play a game of cricket/chess with me and also give in<br />
to my tantrums and stubbornness during those games. Those friendly fights and cute<br />
make-ups we share, much to amma’s envy, are priceless. But, at the same time, you<br />
never entertain my mistakes and always guide me in the right direction. You know<br />
when to hold me tight and when to let me free.<br />
The bond between us is enormous, and though sometimes it is not perfect, it is<br />

parents, and she opened the door.<br />
Husband did not say anything, years passed and they had 2 boys and the 3rd child was a<br />
girl. The father, planned a very big party for the new born baby girl, and he invited everyone<br />
over. Later that night his wife asked him what was the reason for such a big celebration for<br />

An Inspirational Story. ... The law of the garbage truck<br />
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when<br />
suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his<br />
brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!<br />
The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just<br />
smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that?<br />
This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’ This is when my taxi driver taught me<br />
what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck’.<br />
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration,<br />
full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it<br />

2 1/4 cups whole wheat pastry flour 2 1/4 cups whole wheat pastry flour<br />
3 1/4 teaspoons baking soda<br />
1/2 teaspoon salt<br />
1 teaspoon cinnamon<br />
3/4 cup tahini<br />
3/4cuporange juice<br />
1/2 cup sugar<br />
1/2-3/4 cup raisins<br />
1/3 cup walnuts, finely chopped (optional)<br />
For the sugar syrup<br />
1/2 cup sugar (optional)<br />
1/3 cup water (optional)<br />
Directions:<br />
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F Oil an 8-by-8 inch square pan or a 9-inch round pan and dust thoroughly with<br />
flour.<br />
2. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.<br />
3. Pour the tahini into a large mixing bowl and slowly drizzle in the orange juice while beating with an electric<br />
beater. Add the sugar and beat well for several minutes, until this mixture is smooth and lighter in colour.<br />
4. Add the dry ingredients and continue mixing with the beaters. The dough will be thick like cookie dough,<br />
so you’ll have to stop and clean the beaters out when they get bogged down! Be patient, it is worth it. When<br />
it’s well mixed, knead in the raisins and walnuts, if using- they are tasty!<br />
5. Press the dough into the prepared pan, using a spatula or slightly moistened fingers to press the dough into<br />
place and smooth out the top.<br />
6. Bake for 35 to 38 minutes, until light golden brown on top- be sure it’s baked through, but careful not to let<br />
it dry out. Let the cake rest in the pan for several minutes, then remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.<br />
7. You have three options: eat the cake just like this, dust it lightly with powdered sugar, or, as you can “be really<br />
Greek about it” and make a sugar syrup: Boil the sugar and water together in a small saucepan for about<br />
10 minutes to form a slightly thick syrup. Drizzle the syrup liberally over the top of the cake and brush on the<br />
sides.<br />
8. Whichever way you decide, cut this edible Greek glory into squares or wedges and enjoy!

How do plants manage to turn towards the light?<br />
It is easy to think of plants as inert life forms that simply sit at<br />
one place, soaking up sunlight and water. Yet plants are capable<br />
of some complex behavior. For example, plants gradually turn<br />
towards light sources to maximize the amount of energy they<br />
generate by photosynthesis – the process that takes place only<br />
when a plant is exposed to light. This inexorable orientation towards<br />
light is known as phototropism which involves necessary<br />
adjustments to be made by the plant as it grows. The plant does<br />
not bend over as we humans do; instead, it bends by growing in a particular direction to reach out for light.<br />
A plant’s growth movements are controlled by internal chemical substances. When one side of a plant<br />
is in shade, a growth hormone called auxin moves to the darker side of the plant and causes the side to grow<br />
much faster. More cells are produced in that side of the stem. As a result, the stem becomes bent towards the<br />
light. A house plant set on a windowsill soon turns towards the outside and has to be rotated to maintain its<br />
shape.<br />

basket outside their cave. But it was not looking like them. Suddenly, Shere Khan started roaring in the cave.<br />
Shere Khan had got a man-cub. He said that he wants the man-cub. The mother wolf said that the jungle<br />
council shall decide. All the animals came for the meeting. Shere Khan told that<br />
he wants the man-cub. Mother wolf said that he wants to kill him. Akela the<br />
leader of the wolf pack said that the man-cub shall be given to wolf family. All<br />
the baby wolves became happy because they got a baby brother. Shere Khan did<br />
not get the man-cub.<br />
One afternoon when Mowgli was sleeping, the monkeys of the jungle took him<br />
away to Cold Liars, an ancient empty city. Nobody knew this place.<br />
Baloo, Bagheera and Kaa came to save Mowgli from the monkeys. All the monkeys<br />
got scared of Kaa and they ran away. Baloo, Bagheera and Kaa were very<br />
happy. Baloo, Bagheera along with Akela decided to send Mowgli back to the<br />
village. They called for a jungle council meet. All animals came for the meeting.<br />
