Analytic Therapy<br />

at <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

conference<br />

<strong>Trust</strong> staff members Dr Phyllis Annesley, Consultant<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Psychologist, Ms Andrea Dayk<strong>in</strong>, Forensic<br />

Psychologist and Dr Stella Compton Dick<strong>in</strong>son, Head of<br />

Arts Therapies (2001-2007) and Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Research Lead<br />

(2007 to 2013) were delighted to present on ‘Cognitive<br />

Analytic Therapy (CAT) for Patients with<strong>in</strong> Forensic<br />

Sett<strong>in</strong>gs’ at this year’s conference of the International<br />

Association for Forensic Psychotherapy.<br />

The presentation was very well<br />

received with <strong>in</strong>terest from a diverse<br />

range of <strong>in</strong>ternational colleagues. One<br />

participant said:<br />

I am keen to learn more<br />

about CAT. Listen<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g with you, it sounds<br />

like a model I would like to<br />

adopt for the benefit of my<br />

patient group.<br />

“<br />

The group is be<strong>in</strong>g pulled together to<br />

provide expert advice on develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an onl<strong>in</strong>e tra<strong>in</strong>-the-tra<strong>in</strong>er Screen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Brief Interventions (SBI) toolkit to<br />

support primary care practitioners and<br />

systems to deliver these <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />

The conference <strong>in</strong> Ghent, Belgium<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded excellent keynote<br />

presentations by Dr Jan van Hooff on<br />

conflicts <strong>in</strong> attachment among animals<br />

and a presentation by Dr Kristien<br />

Hemmerechts, based on her book<br />

The Woman Who Fed the Dogs. This<br />

book is based on the story of Michelle<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong>, ex-wife of Belgium’s notorious<br />

murderer Marc Dutroux.<br />

The three team members are very<br />

appreciative of the support they received<br />

to attend the conference and they<br />

New <strong>in</strong>ternational expert<br />

role for alcohol nurse<br />

Mark Holmes, Team Leader, Alcohol Related Long Term<br />

Conditions Nurses, has been asked to jo<strong>in</strong> an Expert<br />

Advisory Panel for the World Health Organisation.<br />

It is hoped that this will help facilitate<br />

the spread and adoption of effective<br />

SBI to address risky and problematic<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g behaviours <strong>in</strong> European<br />

populations.<br />

Dr Compton Dick<strong>in</strong>son is also <strong>in</strong>debted<br />

to the <strong>Trust</strong> for its support through an<br />

Invest to Innovate Award to enable<br />

implementation of Cognitive Analytic<br />

Music Therapy research at Rampton<br />

Hospital.<br />

The first meet<strong>in</strong>g of the group<br />

will take place this month <strong>in</strong><br />

Copenhagen. Mark said: “This is<br />

an excit<strong>in</strong>g opportunity and a great<br />

recognition of the lead<strong>in</strong>g role our<br />

<strong>Trust</strong> is play<strong>in</strong>g on the national stage<br />

around alcohol related conditions and<br />

treatment.<br />

“I’m very proud to be tak<strong>in</strong>g part and<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g forward to not only help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

develop this new tool, but <strong>in</strong> addition<br />

the opportunity to work with other<br />

experts from across Europe, to see<br />

what we can also learn from them.”<br />

How Integrated Care is<br />

help<strong>in</strong>g Mansfield couple improve<br />

their health and wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Across Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark and Sherwood, eight multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

teams work with patients, families and carers to provide more care at home.<br />

Here is Peter and Sandra’s story.<br />

Husband and wife, Peter (65) and<br />

Sandra (59), have both suffered from<br />

complex health conditions for more<br />

than eight years and are now receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

support from the Local Integrated<br />

Care Team.<br />

Sandra’s GP orig<strong>in</strong>ally arranged a visit<br />

from Hiedi, a respiratory specialist with<br />

the team, after identify<strong>in</strong>g that she was<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly call<strong>in</strong>g for an ambulance<br />

at times when she could probably<br />

manage her asthma, with support,<br />

at home.<br />

“Hiedi referred me to an Asthma<br />

Specialist at K<strong>in</strong>g’s Mill Hospital to<br />

ensure I was receiv<strong>in</strong>g the maximum<br />

therapy available,” says Sandra. “She<br />

also taught me how to manage my<br />

own blood levels and <strong>in</strong>ject myself with<br />

<strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong> for my diabetes. Hav<strong>in</strong>g a better<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g of my conditions has<br />

made me feel more <strong>in</strong> control; Hiedi<br />

has been <strong>in</strong>valuable.”<br />

Hiedi also looks after Peter’s Chronic<br />

Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder<br />

(COPD), which she diagnosed dur<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

rout<strong>in</strong>e visit to test his breath<strong>in</strong>g, as a<br />

previous diagnosis of asthma didn’t fit<br />

<strong>in</strong> with his symptoms.<br />

Peter also has ang<strong>in</strong>a and is supported<br />

by Katr<strong>in</strong>a, Community Matron. He<br />

said: “Katr<strong>in</strong>a’s visits really built up my<br />

confidence. She talked through my<br />

symptoms, mak<strong>in</strong>g me more aware of<br />

the warn<strong>in</strong>g signs and when I needed<br />

to get help. This was an important step<br />

<strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g me to know when it was<br />

appropriate to call for an ambulance.”<br />

She was so reassur<strong>in</strong>g, and she visited<br />

me too, mak<strong>in</strong>g sure I was OK.”<br />

Falls and occupational therapy (OT)<br />

specialists also visited Sandra after she<br />

had a fall, provid<strong>in</strong>g equipment and<br />

exercises which helped ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> her<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependence and prevent further falls.<br />

Peter is also <strong>in</strong> contact with the team’s<br />

Self-Care Advisor, who is help<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

arrange some voluntary work <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

computers, which he would enjoy.<br />

Peter concluded: “The Local Integrated<br />

Care Team has really helped us get to<br />

where we are now with our health.<br />

We know we can phone them or they<br />

will visit us and we don’t have to r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the GP or go to A & E. We’ve hardly<br />

attended hospital s<strong>in</strong>ce receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

support from the team.”<br />
