EDITOR’S
note
“The world is a book, and those who
do not travel read only a page.” —
Saint Augustine
When you think of the
accomplishments
of history’s great
explorers, it seems
wrong to complain of long haul
flights. What took years, now takes
months. What took days, now takes
hours. Their journeys were fraught
with peril; dangers known and
unknown and yet, their hunger for
exploration never ceased.
I’ve spent a large portion
of my life in transit—traveling from
one city to the next in search of new
experiences, tales and yes, Instagram
gold. Although I still complain about
long haul flights, I can’t imagine
ever loosing that hunger. The things
you learn about life, the world and
yourself are invaluable whether your
travel plans go according to plan
or lead you on a different direction
entirely. There is nothing in this
world that will teach you more—
about yourself, about tolerance,
about life —than travel.
In this we’re traversed
the globe to bring you the best in
innovative style, accessory trends
and more, we hope you enjoy reading
it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating
it.
Until next time, may your
heels always be as high as your
standards,
IN HER SHOES
FROM HEAVENLY HEELS TO SUMPTUOUS SWIMWEAR, ktb is transforming the
way we see resort wear—and ourselves.
Tara Bryan Burner has been creating heavenly heels for more
than a decade. Now, she’s turning her expertise to swimwear
with the launch of KTB—Kill the Buddha. Featuring
figure-flattering silhouettes and eye-catching designs, these
creations are all about hitting the beach in style—and comfort.
It’s such a long journey from concept to creation, what’s been
the most humbling experience launching KTB? For me, that
was admitting that I can’t do everything. I went into this with a clear
vision of what I wanted my brand to look like, and who my customer
is. What I learned quickly was that starting a label is so much more
than just making great items, but rather about creating a cohesive line
of product with a powerful message that is obvious to the consumer.
It wasn’t until I accepted the fact that I didn’t know everything, and
connected with individuals that had skill sets I lacked, that I started to
see my brand come together in a way that matched my vision.
How do you think your designs stand out in the competitive
world of swimwear? I think there is a real void in the market for
swimwear that meets the needs of 30-40-year-old fashionable women.
There is an abundance of swimwear designed for young surfer girls,
and women in their twenties. There is also a lot of brands that target
older women, that promise to tuck and flatten, but feel like a girdle
or are just too much coverage and not enough attitude! My goal is to
design a line that is sexy and stylish, while taking into consideration
the differences that make each one of our bodies unique and beautiful.
Also, KTB swimwear offers pieces like our Bohdi swim necklace, an
original design that can be worn by itself for the more daring woman,
or as a layering piece. We want our swimwear to be playful, versatile
and beautiful.
How would you want women to feel in KTB? I want our women
to feel empowered, confident, and sexy while comfortable in KTB. We
know she is hardworking, and we want her time in a swimsuit to be
spent relaxing, having fun and feeling like her best self. Our message
is: “Embrace your beautiful.” Our goal, to remind her she is, one
swimsuit at a time. KTBSwimwear.com — A.G.
y design
futuristic. diverse. Feminine. jayda hany combines the
best in technology and tradition.
Jayda Hany always
dreamed of working in
fashion—womenswear
in particular. Her focus
shifted to footwear when she moved
from Egypt to attend the London
College of Fashion. Having studied
Architectural Engineering at the
American University in Cairo, Hany
had begun to see her architectural
background influence her hobby
of fashion design. She started to
generate structurally based shoes
that definitely stood out from the
crowd.
“I always tend to come
up with complex designs,” says
Hany. “I start with complicated
and then narrow my designs down
by simplifying them. It’s a lengthy
process that I find absolutely
necessary. I always have to remind
myself that the strongest designs are
the simplest in showing my concept
clearly.”
For Hany, it’s the ability
to mix her architectural background
with a love of fashion that appeals to
her sense of creativity. Her designs
balance the latest technological
innovations with traditional footwear
techniques.
“I tend to mix the usage of
Structural and Architectural Design,
3D technology and traditional hand
lasting techniques,” explains Hany.
“I love seeing the end result of
combining all these materials and
methods together into a finished
product, a shoe.”
Working with a variety
of materials, Hany’s creations can
seem to resemble a kind of footwear
Frankenstein with plastics, leather,
vinyl, rubber and stainless steel all
featured in one shoe. But it’s this
unique take on design that has seen
her attract the eye of footwear lovers
the world.
Futuristic, diverse and
feminine is how this up-and-coming
designer likes to refer to her work.
“My designs strive to empower
women to break free from the norms
dictated by others,” explains Hany.
“Nothing is sexier than feeling strong
and confident.”
Currently working on
launching her first commercial
line, this is definitely one designer
to watch. JaydaHany.com —
FROM CONCEPT
TO CREATION
footwear designer Nienke van Dee on the pain and pleasure
involved in inspired design.
Dutch footwear and accessory designer Nienke Van Dee
knows all to well the challenges of taking a design
from concept to creation. “The biggest challenge
within the design process for me, is that you have
your ideas and have to make it reality,” says Van Dee. “Concepts in
your head can become so crazy and absurd that there is no way to
realize them. You have to constantly think about how am I going
to translate this into a wearable shoe. So for me, it is definitely
the translation from concept to creation—every design again—that
makes it challenging and fun.”
Van Dee’s work is characterized by minimalist
constructions, female influences, unusual use of materials and a
strong eye for detail. The designs find their origin in her fascination
for excess in images and material. “The idea of shape as a tool for
transformation is what drives me,” says Van Dee. “New possibilities
in material inspire me.”
Van Dee studied for three years at the Design Academy in
Eindhoven and graduated in Product Design from Arnhem at ArtEZ
Academy of the Arts. She also studied at the Dutch Healthtec
Academy with Shoe Craft and Design in Utrecht. A passion for
product design combined with her boundless creativity is her ticket
to success.
“I love that it is such a great product to mirror your ideas
and creativity,” says Van Dee. “You can have the most amazing
ideas and techniques in your head and translate that into a
footwear.”
For 2016, shoe lovers can expect more from this talented
designer with the release of her new collection entitled, Skinned.
For those who may not be able to wait, the designer also creates
custom-made designs. Check out her website for more information.
SEA CHANGE
for designer and artist kermit tesoro, shoes are The
exclamation point of our clothing sentence.
You won’t find Kermit Tesoro’s heels in your local
mall—just as you won’t find a Picasso in any old
home goods store. Tesoro’s designs are pieces
of wearable art that challenge our preconceived
notions of footwear design.
Hailing from the Philippines, Tesoro first became
involved in footwear while searching for shoes to match his
clothing designs. Finding inspiration in personal experience
and a new found design awareness, it makes sense that Tesoro
fell into footwear design in such a natural way. For Tesoro,
shoes are “the exclamation point of our clothing sentence.”
At twenty seven, Tesoro already has a plethora of
accomplishments and acclaim to his name. He is renowned
for his unique designs, and is a favorite amongst celebrities—
including Lady Gaga. His shoes can be spotted at Spielzeug
Welten Museum Basel in Switzerland and at MoBA
Netherlands, in fashion publications, and Rockstar Chic, a
trendy coffee table book on fashion in New York.
“In my opinion, I think the real challenge is
outmaneuvering my comfort design sensibility,” says Tesoro.
Clearly, Tesoro’s designs are not for those looking for a
simple, everyday shoe. The heels he creates are special and
bursting with personality. Take his “Oil Spiller” heel, which
is featured in Rockstar Chic. “Oil Spiller” looks like the type
of heel worn by a fashion editor in a post-apocalyptic world.
It sports a large platform that stretches out towards the back
of the shoe. This genius design compensates for the lack of
an actual heel that extends to the ground, offering stability
and balance. Made of leather and acrylic, the heel legitimately
looks like dripping oil—it’s absolutely mesmerizing.
Perhaps his most famous and recognizable heel is
the “Polyposis,” made of wood. “Polyposis” is truly a work
of art—and the perfect summer-inspired heavenly heel.
It’s designed to look like the tentacles of an octopus are
organically wrapping around the foot. Painted in jewel tones
to match the richness of a deep blue ocean, the shoes even
feature painted suckers. There are no extra straps or supports
besides the sculpted tentacles; those serving as the platform,
upper and heel.
“The idea of Polypodis has always been inside
my mind,” says Tesoro. “But I was clueless where to begin
and how to compose my imagination to reality without
compromising the expression. I think, if you love a pair of
shoes enough, you’ll find a way to wear then.”
Heel lovers can get an inside peak into Tesoro’s
creative process by following his Instagram, @kermittesoro,
where the designer posts progress pictures from concept to
construction.
Tesoro is currently working on new designs, but is
in no rush to debut them. Like a true artist knows, art cannot
be forced and it cannot be rushed; the designs will be ready
when they’re ready. Although unsure of what the designs will
be and where the inspiration will come from this time, one
thing that can be counted on is that innovation is sure to be
included. When asked if his designs were meant to be worn
or admired, Tesoro answered perfectly, “I’ll just leave it to the
audience.” Facebook.com/KermitTesoro — Kelly Armetta
sock because technically, anything tight could be classified as
“compression,” but only graduated compression socks provide
the health benefits that are documented in clinical studies, so
not all socks in this case, offer equal health benefits.
A few things to keep in mind when buying a true graduated
compression socks:
First, make sure the producer is actually using
medical knitting machines when creating the socks. Adding
extra spandex to a regular pair of socks does not provide the
same health benefits, and you will notice the difference after
wearing a pair of these socks for the afternoon.
Second, check that there are compression levels
listed. For example, VIM & VIGR has two compression levels
for our legwear, 15-20 mmHg and 20-30 mmHg because
different bodies require more or less assistance. If there is not
a compression level clearly marked, I would question why this
isn’t listed.
The last item is to look that the company has listed
their products with the Food and Drug Administration.
What should you own in terms of the perfect sock
wardrobe? Much of this depends on your own lifestyle. If you
open a woman’s sock drawer, most of us will have different
fabrics and type of socks depending on what we’re doing and
what we’re wearing. We designed VIM & VIGR with versatility
in mind. When I head to the gym, I often wear my nylon or
moisture-wick nylon socks because I like a thinner sock for
workouts. However, during the winter, I love wearing the
wool collection because of the added warmth. We created
different patterns available in four different fabrics so that our
customers have styling and color options to fit their needs and
preferences. A priority of mine in creating VIM & VIGR was
that there was a stylish compression option for all year round
use.
Do sock gremlins exist? Yes! We’ve had customers ask if
we could sell just a single sock because one of their socks
mysteriously walked off. Before we launched the Men’s
collection, we had women tell us stories of how they could
never find their VIM & VIGR socks, and later they realized that
their husbands were stealing them! Luckily, we now have a
Men’s Collection to keep the peace at home. You never know
what or who is taking your socks!
What function can socks play in our lives in terms of
health and well-being? You would be amazed at how a pair
of the right socks can positively impact your health. What
makes VIM & VIGR special is that we play at the intersection
of fashion and function, which helps more people feel
comfortable wearing compression socks and reap the benefits
compression has to offer (reduced leg aches and fatigue,
speedier recovery after tough workouts and/or sports-related
injuries like shin splints and more energized legs). In the past,
compression socks were all about function; the health boosts
were undeniable but because they didn’t prioritize on some of
the less medically focused wishes of the consumer, the socks
looked like they belonged in a hospital. This left compression as
always associated with illness, injury or old age, and alienated
many people. By creating a compression line that is stylish and
available in a variety of fabrics, we’ve opened up the benefits
to a variety of people who would have been disinterested in
compression beforehand. Also, there’s something to be said
when you accessorize your outfit with a killer statement sock.
How did you become involved with the sock world? I
never thought that I would start a compression legwear
company. It all came about really from my own personal need,
which is how I think many new brands begin. When I moved to
Missoula, Montana from New York City, I found myself sitting
for long periods of time at my new job as a pharmaceutical
rep, leaving my legs achy and sore, and with new questions
about my health. I mentioned my new sedentary situation
and accompanying discomfort to a physical therapist and he
recommended I try compression socks. But what I found was
that the compression industry swayed toward either athletic
gear or socks geared around medical use and was unable to
find any type of compression legwear that I could seamlessly
incorporate into my daily lifestyle. Thus, VIM & VIGR was
born as a high-quality compression legwear line with stylish
designs to be worn all day, any day. Now I think about socks so
much, sometimes I feel like the woman who lives in a shoe.
What are the most interesting technological advances
when it comes to sock design/manufacturing? One of
the most exciting things we’re seeing more of in the apparel
industry is the introduction of 3-D printing. This allows you
create designs and fabric combinations more immediately,
which VIM & VIGR takes advantage of. We use some of the
concepts of 3-D printing in the development of our designs
by using the medical knitting machines that provide a
circular knit, which mimics 3D printing technology. In terms
of compression specifically, the medical knitting machines
have become much more sophisticated over the past several
years. The impressive strides in technology have allowed us to
incorporate more fun and detailed designs while still achieving
a graduated compression sock. We’ll have even more patterns
coming out this fall, stay tuned! — VimVigr.com
BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT OUR FAVORITE ONLINE DESTINATIONS.
MEET best friends Ruta Labrence and Anda Auksmukste, FOUNDERS OF YOUR NEW
FAVORITE E-COMMERCE STORE Lab No.25.
What was the inspiration behind LabNo25.com? We
both come from a fashion background and have always
wanted to create something new for the industry. When the
opportunity opened to create a carefully curated contentdriven
platform, we capitalized on it. We wanted for fashionforward
up-and-comers to have a destination to shop for
premium emerging and established brands in an atmosphere
comparable to high-end luxury retailers.
What does an average day look like for you? The
answer is probably true for most entrepreneurs… Every day
looks different! We always start by answering emails and
planning the day ahead. Usually afternoons are for meetings.
Our daily tasks vary, but we’re constantly working on our
website’s development; updating the site, uploading new
products, and creating new content.
How do you decide what to stock? Whenever we select
new designers, we make sure there is a great product and
brand that will add value to the customer. We also look for
a great story behind the brand that helps bring the brand
to life. Before buying a garment, we do trend research and
think of what trends our customers would like and actually
wear. We want to make sure that the garment would actually
fit into the life of our customer, and the practicality, quality
and durability are important elements we consider.
Do you ever want to run away with the merchandise?
We absolutely want to run away with the garments! We
do the purchasing ourselves, and our personal touch is
incorporated. We select garments that we would wear, and
the buying is a strategic process. Many times we see pieces
that we fall in love with, and decide to add to the selection,
even if they weren’t part of the original plan.
What exciting developments do you have planned
for the future? In the future, we want to work on more
exclusive collaborations with designers to create capsule
collections only available on our site. We already have a
collaboration in the works that we’re excited to bring to
LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO THE NEXT BIG THING IN FITNESS.
Former special forces operator Chris Finn has teamed up with
fellow fitness expert Sebastian Morel-Ferreira to present The Pack
Outdoor Gym, a series of group exercise classes that combine the
best in fitness with the beauty of Manhattan’s parks. We caught
up with Finn (pictured)—an Australian ex-pat—to talk workouts,
exercise and the joys of transporting 800lbs of gym equipment
through the busy streets of New York City.
What is The Pack Outdoor Gym? The Pack Outdoor Gym
is a unique and comprehensive small group fitness experience.
We are changing the way that outdoor group fitness classes
are seen. We combine everything you love about indoor group
fitness classes—like kettle bells, weights and a variety of agility
and conditioning equipment—with everything you love about
the amazing parks of New
York City.
How did the idea come
about? The idea for the
pack came about when I
was outside at Rockefeller
Plaza on a sunny day. I
noticed how everybody
from the local area came
out of the office to eat
lunch in the sunshine. This
indicated to me that just
like myself, other people
living in New York craved
sunlight and fresh air. New
Yorkers also like fitness, so
I started wondering why more people were not combining the
two together. I looked into some outdoor fitness classes being
run at the time and even took a few and quickly realized what
the problem was. Without variety, the class becomes boring
very quickly and without equipment it’s difficult to achieve.
There is only so much that can be done with bodyweight and
park benches.
What’s your fitness background? My background in fitness
began when I was living in Australia and serving in the
Army. I spent five years as a paratrooper before successfully
completing the selection process for special forces. During the
process of special forces entry I had the opportunity to learn
from some of Australia’s leading fitness experts, and during
this time, I found my passion for fitness. Before moving over
to the United States, I began studying to become a personal
trainer and group fitness instructor. I am now a qualified
fitness professional in Australia and The United States, having
gained my CPT from NASM. When I first arrived in the
United States, I began working at Equinox where I became
a Tier 3 qualified trainer. I also am a kettle bell instructor
having gained my level two through StrongFirst, the kettle bell
industry leaders.
What kind of fitness level is required to join The Pack
Outdoor Gym sessions? The Pack is a totally customizable
class. Our experience allows us to run a challenging class for
anybody of any fitness level, age or gender. Whether you are a
first-time client attending, or a veteran athlete you can expect
a great work at from our class. We also teach a movement at
the beginning of each class with the intention of enhancing
the skills of our class progressing everybody towards the
sexier activities (if that is their desire) in a safe and efficient
manner.
We’re in love with your Pack bike, how did you come
up with that idea? The question for the class became how
do we get gym equipment to the park? In the metropolitan
area, you often cannot drive
to a park—and certainly
cannot park there for an
extended period—which ruled
out a motorized vehicle of
any kind. The idea for The
Pack bike came about from
my memory of tricycles
being used to transport
heavy loads of ammunition
around the military bases in
Afghanistan. When I teamed
up with Sebastian Morel-
Ferreira to leverage his years
of experience in the fitness
industry and help turn this
crazy idea into an actual
business, we both agreed that if the bikes work in Afghanistan,
there should be no reason they wouldn’t work to deliver gym
equipment to the New York city parks.
It must be pretty hard to ride, have you met a hill you
can’t climb yet? Haha, yeah it is quite difficult to ride. The
intention is to leave the bikes fully loaded in various parking
garages around New York City as close as possible to the
location of the class. I definitely do not want to have to ride
800lbs of gear too far. As for the hills, just getting out of the
parking garage is hard enough. It is more a question of Route
selection—try to avoid any real inclines.
How can people join The Pack Outdoor Gym? People can
sign up for classes through our website at ThePackOutdoor.
com and by selecting their preferred location (currently
Central Park in Manhattan and Gantry Plaza State Park in
LIC). You can also book directly through your Mind Body
account, or on our Facebook page “The Pack Outdoor Gym.”
CURATED BEAUTY PRODUCTS DELIVERED
TO YOUR DOOR. That’s the beauty
of beyond her blush. we talk to
founder Michelle Grundman about
life in the FABULOUS lane.
What was the inspiration behind Beyond Her Blush?
I love the element of surprise. Getting a surprise box every
month is exciting and something to look forward to. Ever
since I was little, I was always a fan of the “fruit of the month
club”, etc. Beauty and fashion have always been my passion.
I was excited to try the beauty boxes on the market but
when I did, I wasn’t sure how to use some of the products. In
addition, I didn’t necessarily have all the products needed to
get the “look.” That’s when I new there was a void to be filled.
What makes Beyond Her Blush so unique? Instead of
creating another box, I offer a beauty kit that gives you stepby-step
instructions on how to use the products (while still
maintaining the element of surprise!). It’s also curated by
celebrity artists, so you are getting looks that are on-trend
by the ultimate professionals who specialize in a particular
category.
What’s your personal beauty philosophy? It’s all about
confidence. You just need a dab of lipstick or smokey shadow
that instantly enhances your look and the way you feel!
That’s exactly where the name “Beyond her Blush” came
from. We want our customers to feel beautiful and exert
confidence. Go beyond the blush, feel beautiful because you
are.
What’s your biggest beauty pet peeve? Noticeable
foundation that stops at the jawline. I want to stop every
person I see and let them know that haven’t blended their
makeup all the way.
What exciting plans do you have in the works for 2016?
We’ve partnered with some incredible high-end designers,
stylists and makeup artists to curate boxes as well as having
up-and-coming brands participate in different boxes. I’m very
excited to see what the rest of 2016 holds for Beyond her
Blush. — BeyondHerBlush.com
HOROSCOPES
By Manish Kumar Arora
K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant.
Facebook.com/ManishAstroConsultant
Aries (21 March – 19 April): This is a great
month to embark on a new venture as you
definitely won’t run out of energy. Just take
the time to choose your path before rushing
in. This period signifies the winds of change.
You are destined for greatness and success.
You need to fully own what is possible and
what you are capable of—those amazing ideas,
they are going to pay off for you. Life is feeling
much more balanced this month. It’s a good
month for collaboration as wherever you go you
bring a sense of peace, balance and harmony.
Favorable dates: July 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21.
Favorable colors: Yellow & Blue.
Cancer (21 June – 22 July): This month begin
to practice putting all of your focus, energy
and action on what you want to manifest and
let the powers that be do the rest. Stand tall,
stand confident and let the world see all of the
amazing tricks you have up your sleeve. Things
may feel up in the air, constantly changing, or
just plain unclear, but there is still a lot that you
can feel grounded in and see the fruits of your
labor. Love wise you‘re inspired to be closer
than you‘ve been, open up your innermost
thoughts and let yourself be emotionally healed
from the past. Favorable dates: July 2, 7, 11, 16,
20, 25. Favorable colors: Yellow & Red.
Taurus (20 April – 20 May): You are
getting into an upswing month. You’ve got to
commit to a path and start moving so that the
commitment energy will get the magical wheels
in motion because it is a sign to the Universe
that you are ready. You will be business focused,
maybe a bit stubborn but very well respected in
your field. You will open up the floodgates for
all of the amazing things wanting to enter. An
emotional tidal wave is coming your way, so
it‘s time to buckle up and get ready for a wild
ride. Favorable dates: July 1, 9, 10, 18, 19, 27.
Favorable colors: White & Blue.
Gemini (21 May – 20 June): You will have
a lot of things competing for your time and
priorities bubbling up constantly. You will long
for perfection. You might have a rather rigid
attitude or deal with a short-sighted partner.
There is a call here to open your mind and
expand out of seeing the world in black and
white. It is about removing your filters and
putting yourself more in other people’s shoes.
You‘ll be able to make up for the things you said
and did, possibly with interest, possibly with
begging, and possibly with some serious hard
work. Favorable dates: July 1, 9, 10, 19, 20, 29.
Favorable colors: Yellow & Blue.
Leo (23 July – 22 August): You can come up
with ideas that lead to good opportunities for
you. You can also find luck through siblings
or neighbors. You can come home if you’re
abroad, complete a writing project, or finish
a course of study. You’re more defensive of
