Letter from the Dean By the Very Rev John Mann, Dean of Belfast This summer we don’t have a special service planned (apart from my daughter’s wedding!) such as has been the case every year since I came to St Anne’s. That means that we have some weeks for holidays and planning without the focus of a major commemoration or celebration. This is particularly good news for the members of staff who have recently joined us, especially Mark Niblock and Simon Cordner. It does take a while to find one’s feet, but both seem to be adaptable and quick to learn - ah, the joys of youth! There are various things afoot as one might say. The website, which has served us well for a decade, is creaking a bit and cannot do what is required by the demands of modern communication, so we are looking into revamping that area of our interface with the public and source of information for the parishioner. Also, there is some repair work going on soon on the great bronze doors to the Cathedral. The ones on the south side have become unusable, due to the mechanism under the lower hinge collapsing. These can only be dealt with by specialist workmen. They need to be in full operation for September. So that work is going ahead. The offices are being re-organised once again. It is difficult to get the configuration just right, but we are working on a scheme that makes the working environment the best that we can achieve for all concerned. So, happily, we have a few weeks to move things on. They will fly by and soon the children will be back, the music start again, the calendar look crammed with events and, yet, day by day, we say our prayers, share communion, contemplate our blessings and look forward in hope. Tributes to victims of Orlando shooting A single candle burned in St Anne’s in the wake of the shooting dead of 49 innocent people at a nightclub in Orlando on June 12. Prayers for the victims were said at services that day, and specially written prayers were available in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, where people wanting to reflect on the atrocity were able to light a candle or spend time in silent prayer. The attack at Pulse nightclub, by an American-born man who had pledged allegiance to ISIS, was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11. All victims of violence were remembered in the prayers said in the days following the attack. Mr Simon Cordner is the Cathedral’s new business development and marketing manager. New business development and marketing manager Mr Simon Cordner has joined the staff of St Anne’s Cathedral as Business Development and Marketing Manager. Simon, 35, has a degree in International Business with Tourism, and previously worked with online bike store Chain Reaction Cycles where he occupied various roles including Events Manager, Head of PR and Brand Manager. Prior to that Simon was a Senior Events Manager with the Northern Ireland Events Company and was involved in delivering major international events at venues across Northern Ireland. Born in Derry City, Simon spent several years in Carrickfergus before moving to Bangor, Co Down, in 1990 where he now lives with this wife Sharon and children Rhylan, 10, Ruari, 8, and Darcy Joy (2). Simon’s father, the Rev Willis Cordner, is the retired Minister of 1st Bangor Presbyterian Church where Simon and Sharon are members. In recent years they also led worship in Belfast City Vineyard. Simon said he was looking forward to this new role at Belfast Cathedral. “I really enjoyed working in tourism and promoting ‘Northern Ireland PLC’ to a global audience. When the opportunity arose to take a position within the Cathedral Quarter I jumped at it!” he said. “St Anne’s Cathedral is an untapped resource with a huge amount of potential and I hope that I can utilise my skills to help develop it. It is an exciting time for this part of Belfast and St Anne’s has an important part to play in the growth and vibrancy of the city.” Cathedral Digest 3
