reception has a level floor and enough space for a wheelchair to manoeuvre easily. Most
doors – barring the one into the second-hand bookshop – are ramped or have a ramp
nearby. There is a spotlessly clean disabled toilet in both the men’s and the ladies’ (no
key required), with wide doors, grab rails and enough space inside to manoeuvre.
Two manual wheelchairs are available to hire (phone in advance to book). A powered
wheelchair would be useful for the slightly steep and long main route through the
garden, though it might not fit through some of the gaps when seeing the house, view
or walled gardens. A manual wheelchair gives flexibility for seeing more of the garden,
although assistance will be needed with the slopes, gravelled paths and in navigating
around the odd sharp corner or tight gateway. There are rest benches throughout the
garden. Guides are available in large print and Braille, and there is also a guide with a
wheelchair-friendly route laid out, complete with the gradient of the slopes throughout
the gardens. Sight- or hearing-impaired visitors can try the sensory trail, which focuses
on the sounds, feel and smell of the garden. Note that the main path through the
gardens is a road, and wheelchair users should look out for the gullies on either side if
moving aside to make way for a car.
FOOD & DRINK aa The Trengwainton Garden Tea Room serves sandwiches, jacket potatoes,
salads and similar meals, many made from ingredients grown in the gardens. It
stops serving meals at 3pm, but cakes and drinks are available until 4.45pm, and it also
caters for those with dietary restrictions.
