The art of German beer glasses
The perfect beer glass should deliver the optimal taste, aroma and mouth feel
in order to enhance the experience of enjoying a high quality German beer. It’s
all about colour, aroma and taste! Here are some examples of differently shaped
beer glasses:
Weissbier Glass
Weissbier is traditionally served in a high, curvature glass and
holds at least 0,5l of beer. Apparently, the high form was
chosen so that the carbonation bubbles can move slowly up to
the top. The curved lip at the top is ideal to trap a thick foam
head. The wider top allows to release the full aroma.
• Recommended for: Weissbier
Beer Mug
This robust, heavy glass holds a lot of beer… It has a wide
cylindrical shape and a handle on one side. The glass is thicker
than other beer glasses and is supposed to insulate the beer to
keep it cool. The handle prevents the hand from holding the
glass and warming up the beer. The wide mouth allows for
plenty of aroma to be released.
• Recommended for: German Pilsener, Ale, Bockbier,
Stout, Oktoberfest Bier, and many more…

Pilsner Glass
This glass is used for serving light beers such as Pils and
Lager. These glasses are usually available in 200ml, 250ml,
300ml or 400ml. They are tall and slender. The glass reveals
the colour and carbonation of the beer and the broad top helps
to maintain the foam (similar to the Weissbier glass).
- Recommended for: Pils, Lager, Schwarzbier (Black
Beer)
The Flute
Similar to a champagne flute the narrow shape helps to
maintain the carbonation. Stems are usually shorter than
those of a champagne glass.
- Recommended for: Schwarzbier (Black Beer), German
Pilsener, Lager
