I know what we’ll see this
summer…sequels. Sequels of what we
saw last summer. It seems as if everyone
in Hollywood is too busy to be creative,
and focused solely on what has earnings
potential.
Now don’t get me wrong, there’s
nothing unethical about trying to earn a
living; but when you’re a screenwriter,
your job is to develop new movies with
interesting plot
lines. Your job is
not to remake a
movie, and tag on
a Roman numeral
to the end of the title.
When I go to Tinseltown and find that
10 of the 20 movies showing are sequels,
I start to question motives. Just because
“Titanic” did well in the box office four
years ago does not mean that it’s time
for a follow-up movie!

that all sequels are
mind-numbing rip-

offs. I happened to thoroughly enjoy
“American Pie” as well as “American Pie
II,” and you’ll probably find me in the
theater opening night for “American
Wedding.” What bothers me is that no
one seems to even try to be original
anymore.
To me, originality is one of the most
important characteristics of movies and
entertainment in general. It’s why I go
to the movies and listen to music in the
first place. I want to be entertained by
something new and
exciting.
Is this too much
to ask? Some
screenwriters
might think so. I can hear their argument
already, “There are only so many original
ideas in the movie making industry, and
they’ve all been done before.”
Nonsense, there must be some movie
plot somewhere that’s fresh. It’s just a
matter of finding it. I’d like to think that
sequels will cease to be, but that’s just
wishful thinking. Chances are that like
the Terminator, “they’ll be back!”

Concerts Blossoming this Summer
With such a variety, from rock to
country, there should be something
for everyone to enjoy.

Five North Canton Hoover students
are participating in the North Canton
Playhouse all-youth production of
William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer
Nights Dream” this June.
The play is a farce about love in a
fantasy world. Sophomore Kari Ringer
plays the role of Helena, while junior
C.J. Dolvin portrays her love interest,
Demetrius. Junior Steve Soehnlen
plays the king, Theseus, and
sophomore Chris Richards plays
Quince. Junior Kevin Doyle has the
role of Egeus, Hermia’s father.
Richards is confident that this
production will be a success.
“I think it could turn out to be one
of the best performances in the history
of the North Canton Playhouse,” he
said.
Dolvin believes the fantasy aspect
of the play will draw in the audience.
“It involves magic and fairies and
everything else you could want,” he
said. “It will be worth every penny.”
“A Midsummer Nights Dream” runs
June 5 through June 14 at the North
Canton Playhouse. For more information
