Families enjoy nighttime hike
Forest Preserve
District of Will County
teaches children
about lightning bugs
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
The Forest Preserve District
of Will County hosted
its annual Firefly Family
Hike at the Hickory Creek
Preserve off LaPorte Road
Thursday, July 7, giving local
families an opportunity
to learn, and get up close
and personal with lots of the
bioluminescent bugs.
This was the third year for
the program, which is run by
Forest Preserve Interpretive
Specialist Angie Opiola.
“The event has been wellreceived,
and we always
get a good turnout,” Opiola
said. “People are very nostalgic
about fireflies, so they
like to take their kids out to
catch them.”
During the two-hour
event, Opiola taught the participating
families about the
firefly’s anatomy and breeding,
uses for fireflies in medicine,
as well as how to repel
pests in one’s backyard
without harming fireflies.
According to Opiola,
there are about 2,000 unique
species of firefly beetles
around the world which eat
both plants and meat, and
are active at all different
times of the day. She also
explained that the chemical
reaction that causes a firefly’s
light to glow is not only
a cold light, but is also the
most efficient source of light
in the world.
After the educational activities,
the attending children
and their parents made
their own glowstick lightning
bugs to wear into the
woods and take home.
“When we go into the
Members of the Rojas family (left to right), Heather, A.J., Leo and Javier, learn about lightning
bugs Thursday, July 7, during the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Firefly Family Hike
event at Hickory Creek Preserve in Mokena. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
woods, it’s going to be dark
and wet, and like firefly
heaven, but we want to be
able to see each other, so
that’s why we make our own
fireflies,” Opiola said.
Each of the participating
children were also given
their own “critter catcher”
to hold the insects that they
caught during the hike.
Once inside the woods,
the children were set loose
down the path to catch as
many fireflies as they could,
though the blinking bugs
were not the only animals
spotted by the hikers. A
mouse and several toads
also caught considerable
attention when they were
seen scurrying through the
undergrowth.
Opiola even went as far as
to scoop up one of the toads
for the children to pet. They
dubbed the amphibian Coolio,
before returning it to the
forest floor.
“I think this was really
engaging,” said Danielle
Sowinski, a mother attending
the event with her son
and daughter. “I think it’s a
great program for kids and
the adults.”
“I like when they host
the events out here,” said
Mandy Ruff, who was attending
the event with her
daughter, Jo. “It’s nice for us
because we live right here,
but it’s a nice part of the forest
preserve for things like
this.”
Ruff said she decided to
bring Jo to the event when
she saw it advertised online.
“I thought it would be educational
and fun to get her
outside, and it’s been a good
time,” she said.
While the parents appreciated
the educational spin
on the activity, the children
were all about the fun.
“My favorite part was doing
the activities under the
pavilion,” said Genevieve
Rauch, who had come to the
event with her sister, Gillian,
and a group of friends.
“Our friend’s little brother
kept spraying us with the
water bottle, and it was really
funny.”
“My favorite part was the
activities, and also going to
catch the fireflies, so pretty
much everything,” Zoe
O’Connor added.
Opiola summed up the
event’s appeal to both parents
and children with a
simple assessment of fireflies:
“It doesn’t matter how
old you are or how many
times you’ve seen them;
they never stop being super
cool.”
Caring for hair
New Mokena salon
opens to style
clients, educate
young stylists
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
Jen Miaczynski has always
had a passion for
styling hair. When she was
in high school, she went to
beauty school as well and
earned both her high school
diploma and her beutician
certification at the same
time.
When she met Dan Camodecca,
former owner of
D’Marie in Frankfort, the two
became friends and formed
close relationships with their
fellow hair stylists.
After having children,
Camodecca stepped back
from her ownership role
and she and Miaczynski
moved to Salon Rhapsody
in Frankfort. After working
in a different environment
for a year, Miaczynski and
Camodecca decided it was
time to start their own salon
to not only style hair, but
also find a space to teach
young stylists the art of the
industry.
“D’Marie was a very
calm space,” Miaczynski
said. “We all worked as a
team, we were very much
family. Moving to Salon
Rhapsody, it was a different
atmosphere. It’s a very big
salon, it was very busy. We
were just ready to concentrate
on education and get
back to our calmer family
group.”
Which is what the coowners
found after purchasing
a small location in Mokena.
The women turned the
space into Studio 16 which
officially opened its doors
in April 2016.
“We were looking for
something in either Frankfort
or Mokena,” Miaczynski
said. “We didn’t want
to go too far from where
we were. We did look for a
while and this popped up. It
all just worked out.”
Miaczynski and Camodecca
brought with them
three stylists that they have
been working with for years.
Their new salon became a
family atmosphere again
with all five stylists working
together like a team and clients
coming over from their
previous salons.
Studio 16 offers any and
all hair services including
cuts, colors, perms and
wedding styles. It also provides
facial waxing and hair
products from Matrix and
Aveda, Miaczynski said.
“It’s not done yet, but our
upstairs is where we’re hoping
we can host continuing
education for stylist,” Miaczynski
said. “I’m an educator
for Matrix, so I’m really
involved in education. When
we were looking for a location,
we also wanted one we
could do education in.”
Miaczynski said she
went back to school to get
her teaching license so she
could lead classes herself
when the upstairs is ready.
She also hopes to host
events lead by manufacturing
companies to come and
educate her future stylists.
“There’s not a lot of
places around here to get
their education.” Miaczynski
said. “We’re hoping to
make that a focus.”
So far the new location
has been a success due to the
relationships already having
been built up between stylists
and clients. Miaczynski
said that the clients enjoy
the more quiet and homey
atmosphere of Studio 16.
So, to show their appreciation
and get the word out
about their opening, Miaczynski
and Camodecca are
holding a Grand Opening
celebration Friday, July 15
at Studio 16.
“It’s more of a client appreciation
so that our clients
can come and spend some
time with us when they’re
not in the chair,” Miaczynski
said. “The main goal is
to get the word out and let
them know we’re here. And
to say ‘thanks for coming
with us and being loyal to
the group here.’”
But both Miaczynski and
Camodecca know that the
success of Studio 16 would
not have been possible if either
of them did it on their
own. Miaczynski said that
Studio 16 in Mokena offers clients a variety of hair products along with a family
atmosphere and friendly stylists to take care of their hair.
she travels a lot for her work
with Matrix and Camodecca
spends time with her children
so they compliment
each other in that when one
is away, the other will be
able to take care of Studio
16 while she is gone.
The co-owners are hoping
to open their upstairs
within their first year of being
in business. They are
also hoping to fill their final
stylist position as soon
as possible.

Women learn to defend themselves from attackers
State Rep. Margo
McDermed helps
organize library selfdefense
class
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
One Light Self-Defense
held a women’s self-defense
class at the Mokena Public
Library June 30, for residents
of Illinois’ 37th District.
The event was organized
by 37th District State Rep.
Margo McDermed and was
attended mostly by pairs of
women and their high school
or college age daughters.
“We had an overwhelming
response to this,” said
Kathy Hilton, McDermed’s
Legislative Assistant. “It’s
very timely because a lot of
moms want their daughters
to know these things before
they go off to college in the
fall.”
About 70 women attended
the event from all around the
suburbs, filling the downstairs
room at the library.
“We only marketed this
for the residents of the district,
but we didn’t turn anyone
away,” said Hilton. “We
had one woman drive all the
way out here from Aurora
today because she’d heard
about the class.”
McDermed herself was
supposed to be in attendance
at the workshop but
was unable to return from
Springfield in time due to
the afternoon votes on the
state’s stop-gap budget
measures.
Addressing the crowd
before the session began,
Hilton relayed McDermed’s
regrets for not coming. “She
is very sorry she couldn’t be
here with you tonight, but
the good news is that the
schools are going to be opening
on time and fully funded
for next year, so that’s why
Sean (left) and Tarne Mixson demonstrate practical use of a
defensive blocks during the class.
she couldn’t make it.”
One Light Self-Defense
is a Chicago organization
dedicated to teaching basic
self-defense and escape
techniques to school and
community groups around
the U.S. The group has also
run workshops for school
girls in Nairobi, Kenya
where sexual violence is a
common experience.
“When we first came there,
we were sitting with the girls
and they all had their heads
down,” said group founder
Jeanette Brook. “They told
us that rape ‘happens all the
time, even to children and
babies, and there’s nothing
we can do about it. We’re
helpless.’”
Brook said the group
stayed with those girls for a
week, teaching them basic
self-defense they could use
to protect themselves from
assailants, and by the end
of the training a change had
taken place.
“They became more confident,”
Brook said. “They
were walking with their
heads up and they were excited
about the idea that there
was something they could do
to protect themselves.”
Since then the group has
traveled to Kenya three more
times and trained locals to
become instructors so more
girls can learn to defend
themselves.
“Rape is a significant problem
in the U.S. too though,
and often times we just cover
it up, which is sickening,”
said Brook. “So thank you all
for coming tonight because
we don’t want these things to
happen to any of you.”
The group’s three-hour
seminar included facts about
assault and rape in the U.S.,
common sense safety tips for
how to avoid being attacked,
and exercises in simple defense
maneuvers people can
use if they are attacked.
Some of the suggestions
made to the attendees were
to be constantly aware of
their surroundings, look confident,
avoid walking alone
in dark or isolated places,
and not to be afraid to ask
security officers or police
for help if something doesn’t
feel right.
Due to the overwhelming
popularity of the event
McDermed’s office has organized
a second workshop
at the Frankfort Square Park
District for Monday, August
1. Of the 100 available slots,
40 have already been filled
with overflow from the first
class, so pre-registration is
recommended for anyone
who is interested. To register,
contact the 37th District
Office at (815) 277-2079.
Do I Have
HearIng Loss?
How do you know if you
have hearing loss? The
signs are not always readily
apparent. Here are a
few questions you can ask
yourself to explore the possibility
of a hearing loss.
• Do you have difficulty
understanding in noisy
environments?
• Do you frequently ask
for things to be repeated?
• Is it difficult to understand
others when talking
on the telephone?
• Do you tend to listen to
your radio or tv at a higher
level of sound than your
family or friends?
• Do your friends or family
comment that you might
have hearing loss?
If you answered yes to any
of these questions, you
might have a hearing loss.
The only way to know for
sure is to get a professional
hearing evaluation.
LW teacher attends renewable
energy conference on scholarship
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
A Lincoln-Way High
School District 210 science
teacher received a scholarship
through the U.S. Department
of Energy to attend
a conference in Pittsburgh
this summer. Now, she’s
planning on bringing back
what she learned in summer
school to her district.
Elizabeth Conroy, a Lincoln-Way
graduate herself,
has been teaching biology and
forensic science at the district
since 2004. She also gave Lincoln-Way
North and Lincoln-
Way East students a chance to
take AP Environmental Science
for the first time during
the 2015-2016 school year.
This past spring, she applied
for the scholarship to
attend the REcharge Academy,
hosted by REcharge
Labs at Carlow University in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“I received an email about
the program telling me I was
eligible, so I filled out the
application,” Conroy said.
A total of 35 academy attendees
received scholarships
or grants to attend the
academy, and Conroy was
one of only two Illinois
teachers to receive a scholarship,
said Ava Buchanan,
outreach and program coordinator
for REcharge labs.
The scholarship Conroy
received in the amount of
$1,000 was provided by the
National Renewable Energy
Laboratory, a program of the
federal Department of Energy.
(The total cost of the
academy was $1,250.)
The five-day conference
was held in mid-June and
focused on ways to incorporate
alternative energy
projects and lessons on wind
and solar power into science
curriculums using hands-on
learning techniques.
“They focused a lot on
Elizabeth Conroy holds
a solar-powered car
project she made during
the REcharge Academy,
a week-long renewable
energy conference that she
attended on scholarship
at Carlow University in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Photo submitted
problem solving and what
they called ‘MacGyver-ing,’”
Conroy said. “They would
give us a big box of stuff, like
little solar panels and swim
noodles and pieces of plastic,
and tell us to make something
out of it like a wind turbine.”
Conroy said that while it
took her a while to get used
to the idea of building something
without any parameters
— and that is a common issue
with students in the same
situation — she was very
happy to find she had been on
the right track with her environmental
science class.
“For the final project of
my AP Environmental Science
class, I had the kids
build a wind turbine out
of recycled materials,” she
said. “So when they had
us do something similar, I
thought, ‘great. I must be
cooler than I thought.’”
Conroy said she hopes to
take some of the ideas from
the conference and adapt
them to her curriculum next
year for her AP students.
She looked forward to using
small solar panels in classroom
projects.
Another thing she plans on
doing with the information
she learned at the conference
is sharing it with the science
teachers from District 210’s
feeder schools. She was
inspired to bring some of
the information back to the
feeder school teachers by the
other attendees of the convention,
many of whom were
elementary school teachers.
“The conference says it’s
for teachers from grades
[fourth] through [12th], but I
didn’t expect to see so many
of the younger-grade teachers
there,” she said. “A lot of
them talk about doing work
with little circuits with kids
... People don’t realize little
kids can do science too.”
Conroy said she thinks the
new approach being taken
with the next generation science
curriculums — formally
known as STEM (science,
technology, engineering and
mathematics) and STEAM
(science, technology, engineering,
arts and mathematics)
— is a step in the right
direction.
“These programs fit in really
well with the STEM and
STEAM programs that are
being encouraged in a lot of
school districts,” she said.
“It makes a lot of sense too,
because science should be
creative, not just reciting set
facts.
“Kids are very good at
thinking outside the box
when we give them the opportunity,
and scientists
don’t just get one shot at
something either, they keep
adjusting and modifying experiments
again and again
until they get it right,” she
added. “So letting the kids
do that is an interesting
model.”

Raising funds for veterans in need
SOAR president to
compete in Manteno
Triathlon with sons
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
The veterans of the Manteno
Veterans’ Home rely on
fundraisers to help them live
happy lives. The triathlon
being held at Lake Manteno
this July 30, is just one way
the community has helped
throughout the years.
This year, Brian Swift and
his Mokena-based organization
Swift Outdoor Accessible
Recreation (SOAR) is
to sponsor and participate
in the triathlon. Swift hopes
to raise money to give back
to the community and raise
awareness to the disabled
community.
“It was something I’ve
always wanted to do,” Swift
said. “If you’re in a wheelchair,
that doesn’t mean you
can’t get out there and swim
or be involved in some
way.”
At a young age, Swift
was injured and is now gets
around in a wheelchair, but
his has not let that stop him
from doing things that he
enjoys. He plans to participate
in the swimming portion
of the triathlon while
his two sons, Callaghan and
Spencer, complete the biking
and running portions
respectively.
“It’ll be an interesting
endeavor,” Swift admitted.
“I’m excited about it for
SOAR and personally it’s
forced me to take my game
to a new level.
“It feels nice to sponsor
an event that gives back to
the community, especially
the veterans of Manteno.”
Besides giving back to the
veterans, Swift also would
like to let disabled members
of the community know that
SOAR exists and that the
non-profit’s goal is to help
them in any way possible,
Swift said.
He also hopes to be like
an inspiration to other disabled
persons who would
like to be able to compete in
physical activities or event
just to go outside and enjoy
the warm summer air.
“You don’t get a lot of
people with disabilities doing
this,” Swift said. “It’s a
big endeavor. I’m excited
to get some exposure and
let people know we provide
whatever they need.”
SOAR exists mostly to
raise grant money so disables
persons can afford a
wheelchair or other attachments
necessary for them to
utilize their chair outdoors,
Swift said.
He added that a lot of
wheelchairs are not made
for the outdoors so it is hard
to maneuver them through
dirt and grass. For wheelchairs
that are outdoor accessible,
the client would
have to pay out of their own
pocket and that is where
SOAR comes in.
Swift said that his organization
puts on several
different events to not only
raise money, but to show
people that they can still enjoy
outdoor activities from
their wheelchairs.
He hopes that competing
in the triathlon will encourage
others to follow
his lead. However, SOAR
needs to raise money itself
so that Swift can afford to
Finding Senior Housing
can be complex, but it
doesn’t have to be.
“You can trust
A Place for Mom
to help you.”
sponsor and participate in
the event. So, Swift started
a GoFundMe page at the beginning
of the summer with
the goal to raise $10,000 for
training expenses.
“We’ve been moving
forward fairly well,” Swift
said. “We’d like to try to
get things moving quicker,
but it takes time to learn
and understand. We’re focusing
on getting our name
out there, the more people
know you, maybe they have
a friend that has a disability
they can tell them about
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox resident wins
June’s Preserve the Moment
Photo Contest
There is a story in which
a kiss turns a frog into a
prince.
This is not that story,
though it does involve a
frog.
This time around, a frog
picture turned a New Lenox
woman into an award-winning
photographer and the
frog into a miniature celebrity.
Lauren Dundek captured
the frog’s hop through the
creek and grass during a trip
to Hickory Creek Preserve.
She set out to take photos
for the Forest Preserve District
of Will County’s new
Preserve the Moment Photo
Contest.
The contest runs from
June 1 through Dec. 31 and
picks monthly winners to
compete in the overall contest.
Dundek’s photo was
chosen as the June winner.
Though she is an amateur
photographer, Dundek took
an interest in the art form
when she was a child.
When she heard about
the forest preserve district’s
photo contest, the combination
of her loves of photography
and nature inspired
her to participate, she said.
Each contestant is limited
to five contest entries per
month, and each participant
is to receive a gift from the
district for entering. After
the contest ends, the monthly
winning photos will be posted
online, and members of the
public to vote for an overall
winner.
“I’m not a professional
photographer,” Dundek said.
“I just like being outside. It’s
fun that it turned into something
a little bigger.”
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Residents ask for mulligan
with disc golf course
An 18-hole disc golf
course is slated to come to
Tinley Park, but some in
the community have mixed
emotions about its arrival.
The Tinley Park–Park
District Board of Commissioners
listened to grievances
July 6 from residents
concerning the potential disc
golf course.
The board recently voted
and approved plans to move
forward with the creation
of the course at Siemsen
Meadows, 7200 167th St.,
after holding a public hearing
on the matter June 15.
John Curran, the park district’s
director of parks and
recreation, said the district
already has begun preparing
for the course by purchasing
$14,000 in equipment, with
$6,000 earmarked for installation
costs.
Debbie Norris, a Tinley
Park resident, said preserving
the natural beauty of the
wetlands should be priority
and suggested another location
for the course should be
investigated.
Curran responded to residents’
concerns by reassuring
them the district heard
their objections.
Not all Tinley Park residents
opposed the creation
of the disc golf course,
though. Brian Borcherding,
a 12-year Tinley Park resident
and avid disc golf player,
offered his support for the
creation of the course.
“I believe there are a lot of
people who want a disc golf
park,” he said.
The after-holiday festivities
AMANDA Jarzynski
amanda@mokenamessenger.com
This week seemed
fairly dry after the
festivities of the
Fourth of July parade,
celebration and fireworks. It
was amazing to see so many
people lining the streets to
watch the parade and then to
gather in Main Park for the
continued festivities.
It was such a dramatic
change this week, but I guess
the town just had to calm
down for a few days before
starting to pick back up. Like
I said last week, there are a
lot of fun events coming to
Mokena and next weekend
(Friday July 15-Sunday July
17) there are three big events
coming to town for some
summer fun.
The first is the third annual
Festa Italiana, Sunday, July
17 starting at 11 a.m., which
is to provide family fun,
food and traditional songs
and prayers to honor Our
Lady of Mount Carmel. The
event begins with a procession
to Front Street where an
onslaught of barbecues will
be manned to make a variety
of Italian cuisine.
There should be no threat
of rain, but just in case,
attendees will be able to eat
their food under a large tent
and enjoy the entertainment
provided. Children will
be visited by Jim Nesci’s
Cold-Blooded Creatures
and adults can enjoy a
drink or two.
There will be dancers and
opera singers plus much
more to make the afternoon
exciting.
Just before that event,
the Mokena Lions will be
finishing up their Firecracker
Dance Weekend. This event
starts on Friday, July 15, but
continues through Saturday,
July 16, with several activities
and events going on to
keep the energy up during
the summer.
Day 1 kicks off with performances
from All About
Music and Theatre’s junior,
intermediate, and senior
rock bands. There will also
be Hula-hoops, a Limbo
contest, a fairytale princess
appearance and fun fair-style
games for everyone.
The next day, the Lions are
hosting their Craft Fair in the
early afternoon and continuing
into the evening with their
Firecracker Dance which is to
feature headliners like Johnny
Russler with the Beach Bum
Band and Stereo Types.
While Festa Italiana is in
full swing, attendees may
want to drive over to Main
Park to check out the park district’s
Flea Market. They are
to run from 8 a.m.- 2p.m. and
they will be selling everything
from produce to new or used
clothes, tools and baubles.
Since it’s early in the
morning, it would be something
fun to do before heading
over to Festa Italiana
for some lunch. You never
know what you might find
at a flea market.
So that’s three events
right there are sure to be
fun for every member of the
family. So get out and enjoy
the warm summer weather
now that it has decided to be
consistent.
For more information on
any of these events, visit the
“When they announced
Softball a family affair for
Bottino
The first time Sidney Bottino
strapped on catcher’s
equipment as a 7-year-old,
she mixed up the shin guards
and ended up with her legs
stuck together.
She quickly got the hang
of the gear and now is headed
into her sophomore year
as a catcher for the Western
Illinois University softball
team.
But Bottino’s success and
love for the game can all be
traced back to that first time
she put on the gear, albeit
against her own wishes at
the time.
“There was no catcher on
the team, and I always wanted
to be a pitcher, but my
dad was one of my coaches,
and he said, ‘Well, there’s no
catchers, so we’re going to
put you at catcher and just
see how it goes,’” Bottino
said.
Bottino played in 16
games for the Leathernecks
this past season as a freshman.
Making tasty creations
Mokena Community
Public Library hosts
dessert event for
area children
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
With school out and the
weather finally staying consistently
warm, there is no
better way than to celebrate
but with a free treat at the
library.
Children got the opportunity
to create their own
cookies at the Mokena Community
Public Library July
6, with plenty of frosting and
toppings such as M&Ms,
multicolored sprinkles,
chocolate chips and even
gummy candies.
“It’s a nice way for them
to have fun and express their
creativity,” said Wendy Asbridge,
young adult librarian
at the library.
The cookie event was
open to all children in grades
kindergarten through eighth,
but it was on a first-come
first-serve basis. Plates of
cookies and bowls of toppings
lined several tables
in the downstairs meeting
room of the library, waiting
for the children to arrive.
When the doors opened,
the young cookie enthusiasts
marched through the doors
and picked out whichever
cookie they liked best.
“They really get a kick out
of it,” Asbridge said. “You
just grab a cookie and dig
right in. Then they get to eat
them.”
But the event did not start
out as a cookie-decorating
event. More than 10 years
ago when the event started,
a different dessert was used
but the event did not work
out as well, so the librarians
switched to cookies,
Asbridge said. The cookies
went over well with the
Lily Brown (middle) shows her brothers Cameron (left) and
Reed how to properly lick a spoon after finishing frosting a
cookie.
young ones and so the library
stuck with that.
The cookies are purchased
by the library from Berkot’s
Super Foods and each year,
a different ensemble of toppings
are purchased for the
cookies. Though the event
was marketed for kindergarteners
through eighthgraders,
there were some
older participants who took
advantage of the non-decorated
cookies at the end of
the event.
Parents joined their children,
helping with toppings
and taking photos of the
creations, and older siblings
showed their younger siblings
the proper techniques
to frost a cookie and then
lick the spoon.
Diana Brown of Mokena
brought her three children,
Cameron, Lily and Reed, to
the cookie event as a treat
during summer vacation.
“We’re part of the reading
program,” Diana said.
“We’ve been to a couple
other events, so we thought
we’d come to this one too.”
The library’s Read for
the Win summer reading
program has been going on
since the beginning of June,
and Asbridge said that they
signed up 870 children. The
cookie event was just one
of many exciting activities
planned to give children incentive
to come back to the
library and read.
“It’s nice to see how happy
they are to be at the library,”
Asbridge said. “Coming up
we’ve got our reptile show.
That one has always been
popular in the past. And then
we have our end of summer
reading carnival planned [in
August].”
To keep up with its Read
for the Win theme, the endof-summer
party will be
sports-themed and will feature
Magical Balloon-dude
Dale, airbrush tattoos, candy
art and more.
Until that time, program
participants and other members
of the community can
enjoy the last few events
coming up in July for the library,
including mini-golf in
the library on Thursday, July
21 and “World of traveling
reptiles” on Friday, July 22,
which is open to all ages.
The Dish
Bonefish Grill tries to keep customers on the hook with summer specials
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
It would not be fair to
use the old adage of “the
only thing that is constant is
change” to describe Bonefish
Grill.
After all, it is a consistent
level of quality, creativity
and service that has kept
area residents circling back
through the establishment’s
revolving door in Orland
Park for nearly three years.
“We’ve been blessed with
how many people come to
eat here on a daily basis,”
managing partner Nicholas
Kapellas said. “It really is a
testament to how great our
food is.”
But change always plays
a big role for a business that
deals in fresh seafood, as
the catches transform with
the seasons, and the specials
menu evolves to accommodate
the latest bounty.
Just weeks ago, Bonefish
introduced a summer menu
expected to stick around
through the beginning of
September. But even within
the next few months, those
specials will see change.
“We’re all about freshness,
when you think summer,”
Kapellas said. “It’s
nice and warm outside.”
To match that atmosphere,
Bonefish recently introduced
a fresh watermelon martini
($9.40) to get diners started. It
features hand-muddled watermelon,
house-infused English
cucumber and Fris vodka infusion,
and fresh sour, garnished
with frozen watermelon cubes.
It is the latest in a line of handcrafted
martini offerings Kapellas
said have done plenty on
their own of drawing attention
to the restaurant, with in-house
infusion and the “big city bar
feel.”
“We like to differentiate
ourselves so people remember
us,” he said. “The watermelon
martini is a favorite.”
Fresh day boat scallops ($22.90) — sushi-grade scallops on a bed of creamy corn risotto,
topped with crispy bacon and lemon butter drizzle, served alongside green beans — are a
specialty only available during the summer season at Bonefish Grill in Orland Park.
Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
But for seafood lovers,
the wild salmon offerings
are where the summer specials
get really interesting.
In early July, the menu featured
wild sockeye salmon
with spinach, bacon and blue
($24.50), showcasing woodgrilled
salmon, topped with
sautéed spinach, bacon and
blue cheese crumbles, then
finished with lemon butter.
“It’s the most flavorful of
any wild salmon,” Kapellas
said, crediting that flavor to
a high oil content.
But the plan is to change
the wild salmon special
throughout the summer,
first to the king variety, then
coho.
“When the different species
become available, we’ll
bring in different types
of salmon,” Kapellas explained.
Throughout the summer,
though, Bonefish intends to
feature fresh day boat scallops
($22.90). The scallops
are advertised as “sushigrade”
and come served on
a bed of creamy corn risotto,
topped with bacon and lemon
butter drizzle, alongside
green beans.
“They call them day boat
because they have to be back
within 24 hours,” Kapellas
explained.
That means they are
handpicked based on size,
shucked on-site and shipped
within a day. Kapellas said
like the other summer specials,
Bonefish has featured
them in the past, and some
customers tapped into culinary
culture come back just
for those.
“We tweak a little bit, but
with market fresh food you
don’t need to do a lot,” Kapellas
said. “We try to get
those fresh ingredients. ...
The food speaks for itself.”
Except, sometimes for the
less savvy customers, servers
have to speak a little for
the food, as well, educating
diners on the always developing
menu. That is where
constant — and in this case,
“constant” means staff with
years of experience in dealing
with seafood — is important.
“We pride ourselves on
having really knowledgeable
servers and chefs in the back
who know how to handle
these things,” Kapellas said.
But customers drawn to
the fresh summer tastes of
wild salmon and day boat
scallops do not have time on
their sides. Because like the
tides, Bonefish’s specials are
bound to change.
Get that watermelon out of
my martini!
It is crazy to think, but
there are actually people in
this world who simply do
not like watermelon.
We call them weirdos, of
course, but they exist nonetheless,
and they have as
much right as anyone to a
martini.
Fresh watermelon
martini recipe
Orland Park’s Bonefish
Grill features on its
summer specials menu a
fresh watermelon martini,
made with hand-muddled
watermelon, house-infused
English cucumber and Fris
vodka infusion, and fresh
sour, garnished with frozen
watermelon cubes. Here is
how to make it at home.
Ingredients
• 2 cubes fresh
watermelon
• 2 cucumber slices
• .25 ounces simple
syrup
• 1.5 ounces vodka
• .5 ounces fresh sour mix
Steps
• Combine the
watermelon cubes,
cucumber slices and
simple syrup in a glass,
and muddle well.
• Add vodka and fresh
sour mix.
• Shake and strain into a
chilled martini glass.
So for those not as keen on
the fresh watermelon martini,
Bonefish’s summer menu
also features a fresh strawberry
rosé martini ($9.10),
featuring hand-muddled
raspberry, blackberry and
strawberry, with Belleruche
Rosé and St. Germain elderflower.
The martini is
finished with fresh berries,
to boot.
Best paired with ...
For those looking to pair
the wild salmon or day boat
scallops with something other
than a martini, a sommelier
might use plenty of words
to describe the flavor profiles
that would mingle well with
the fresh fish. Kapellas only
Secrets of the shake
• To make a refreshing
cucumber vodka, simply
slice a cucumber and
place in vodka. Allow to
infuse for 24-48 hours.
• For cocktails on the
sweeter side, add a bit
more simple syrup.
• Substitute tequila for
vodka, and increase the
sour mix to 1.5 ounces,
shake and strain over ice
into a glass with a salt rim
for a margarita spin on
the recipe.
needs two: pinot noir.
It might sound unconventional,
but it was the go-to
among staff when they taste
tested the dishes, and Kapellas
said it is largely owed to
the swine topping each dish.
“That was the favorite,”
he said. “It really complements
the bold flavor of the
bacon.”
It’s not summer inside
To round out the summer
theme, Bonefish Grill’s 40-
seat patio has been open for
the past couple of months,
and Kapellas is not going to
shut it down until he must.
“We’ll have it open as
long as we can,” he said.

Rising Interest Rates Motivating Buyers at Brookside Meadows
After a long period of
low interest rates on home
loans buyers are seeing
rates move upward a trend
that is likely to continue. For
home shoppers this means
the wait for lower rates is
over. Now is the time to step
in, review your homework
and make the move – to
Brookside Meadows in
Tinley Park.
Timing is everything and
hopeful home owners can
select from preferred sites,
choose options, negotiate
the best price and stay
ahead of rising interest
rates. But remember, the
wait is over. Not only are
interest rates on the move
but Crana Homes has
announced that Brookside
Meadows will soon begin
Phase II which means the
remaining homes in Phase
I are attractively priced to
sell.
These single family
attached homes have
impressive award winning
designs, energy- efficient
features and are set in a
great Tinley Park location.
With prices holding in the
upper $200s (including site)
and mortgage rates on the
move, now is the time to
choose from the excellent
home sites still available at
Brookside Meadows.
Brookside Meadows
currently features two
very popular designs. The
Fahan II is a split level plan
with three bedrooms and
two and a half baths. This
is an elegant 3,303 total
square foot home (2,087’
living space and 1,216’ of
basement) with a two car
garage. A large open space
kitchen offers sleek granite
countertops surrounded by
generous cabinet space. An
impressive loft overlooks a
stately and relaxing great
room which is adjacent to
the kitchen. Beautiful oak is
used throughout the home
– including doors, kitchen
cabinets, railings and trim.
Ceramic tile covers the
floors in the foyer as well
Chef’s delight: Kitchen and dining
areas in the Fahan II.
as the bathrooms which
also feature cultured marble
vanity tops. A full walkout
or lookout basement and
a deck is included and
provides functional space
and added home value.
The comfortable Lennan
II is a two (or optional
three) bedroom split level
home which includes most
of the features of the Fahan
II with the exception of the
spacious master suite which
has an optional cathedral
ceiling and is located on
the upper level. The Lennan
II has 3,167 square feet
of total space (2,118’
The Fahan II, Brookside Meadows’ Fahan II, a split level 2 3BR
single family attached home.
Loft overlooks Fahan II’s great
room with optional fireplace.
living space and 1,049’ of
basement) and a two car
garage.
Attractive options are
available. Skylights provide
natural light and a soaker
tub in the master bath
is always a favorite. The
addition of a fireplace is a
very impressive touch as
well as coffered ceilings.
Other stylish options
are available. Contact a
sales associate for more
information.
All homes at Brookside
Meadows include energy
saving features like a high
efficiency furnace and the
installation of Lo E glass.
Other ‘green’ features
include an Energy Miser hot
water heater, vented soffits,
1.75” insulated entrance
doors, energy efficient
appliances and Tuff R
insulated wall sheathing.
The water source is Lake
Michigan.
Tucked away in a quiet area
of Tinley Park, Brookside
Meadows is close to all
the shopping, recreation,
cultural events and dining
of a major metropolitan
area. Hundreds of local
retail choices are minutes
away including numerous
shopping centers and
Orland Park malls.
Major highways are
nearby and the Metra rail
line is a short drive away,
perfect for commuters
Brookside Meadows’ Lennan II, a split level single family 3BR
attached home.
Plenty of kitchen work space,
cabinet storage and beautiful
granite countertops.
traveling into the city. Tinley
Park maintains 40 parks,
over 30 ball fields and
other facilities including
the huge Bettenhausen
recreational center with
an indoor playground and
much more. Stay ahead of
rising rates and shrinking
inventory by making your
move now to
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Tyler Laux
Going Places
Figus: Illinois Wesleyan
‘the best package for me’
James Sanchez
Assistant Editor
Tyler Laux is a recent
graduate of Lincoln-Way
North High School, where
he was a member of the
Phoenix baseball team. He
will continue his baseball
career at Prairie View A&M
University in Prairie View,
Texas in the fall.
Who got you into
baseball?
My father got me into
playing baseball when I was
about four or five years old.
What’s the best part
about the sport?
It’s the only sport where
you don’t have the ball in
your hand to score, so it’s
more challenging than other
sports. You have to give the
other team a chance to win
before the game is over, so
you have to always play hard
until the end.
What’s the best advice
you’ve ever gotten from
one of your coaches?
Probably to keep my head
up and never give up. Even
if you’re down to your last
out in a game, anything can
happen.
Who do you look up to?
I look up to my father.
He played baseball when he
was younger, and he helped
me get through the whole
recruiting process. Every
challenge I’ve ever had, he
helped me get through it.
Do you have any
pregame superstitions?
Sometimes I wear the
same three-quarter sleeve
when I play.
What made you want to
be a pitcher?
I thought it would be the
easiest way to a college
scholarship. Most college
rosters have way more pitchers
than any other position.
What are you going to
remember most about
this past season?
The bond that we had as a
team.
What are you going to
miss most about North?
Photo Submitted
All the friendships that I
created when I transferred
there.
What made you choose
Prairie View A&MM
University?
I love the coaches and the
area the school is in. The
coaches were very nice and
welcoming. I also loved the
school. It was beautiful.
What’s your favorite
memory on the baseball
diamond?
Probably when we won
the summer league state
championship in 2015.
Interview by Editorial Intern
Michael Ivey
While some high school
athletes seek out the right
college that maximizes his
or her potential at the sport,
Lincoln-Way North graduate
Nick Figus was thinking
more about his aspirations as
a doctor first and his love for
baseball second.
He said he found the best
of both worlds.
Next year, the outfielder
is to play at Illinois Wesleyan
University – a team that
amassed a record of 222-141
over the past eight seasons.
And he will enter a pre-medical
program where more than
80 percent of its graduates are
admitted into medical school
on the first try, according to
the school’s website.
“It came down to more
than baseball,” Figus said of
his decision. “When I went
to [Illinois] Wesleyan on my
visit, it was just a great fit
both academically and athletically.
It was overall the best
package for me, I thought.
[Playing college baseball] is
obviously something that’s
been a goal as soon as I
started playing. It was always
something to look forward to,
so it’s a good achievement to
be playing at the next level.”
Aside from baseball, Figus
also played basketball and
football at a young age. However,
baseball stuck out with
him the most because of how
much the sport built a bigger
bond between him and his
dad, as well as other children
in the area growing up.
Most of the children he
grew up with eventually were
his teammates all the way
through high school. He said
the long relationship made
the loss against Providence in
Nick Figus, who is going to Illinois-Wesleyan University
next year, hits the ball during a regular season game.
Burns Photography
the sectional championship
more painful. The loss was
tougher to swallow, considering
North had the lead in
the final inning before giving
it up to the eventual state
champions.
“It was hard to think that
we almost had [the win],”
Figus said. “We still think
we deserved to win that
game and looking back at
it we’re still heartbroken.
We’re still having a hard
time to get over it.”
However, it was still a
strong season for Figus, as
he capped off his senior year
batting .398 with 18 RBI and
29 runs in the No. 3 spot. He
also had 12 doubles and a
slugging percentage of .551.
Figus believed this year’s
team was the best in school
history, in terms of talent and
the team’s bond. That bond
helped them win the summer
league state championship
before the school year
started. He said winning that
was his favorite memory in a
North uniform.
“As a team, that’s when we
really connected – seniors
through juniors,” he said.
“We really came together,
and I never felt we would
lose any of those games in
the summer. Everyone was
hitting, everyone was fielding.
We were just rolling.”
He said it was extra special
doing it with the players
he grew up with.
“It’s not going to be the
same anywhere else because
we’ve grown up with
each other, and we’ve been
through everything together,”
he said. “Every baseball
team I’ve been on, I’ve always
had a bond, but I just
don’t think it’ll be as strong
as the one we’ve had with
the kids I’ve grew up with
and played with for eight
years.”
But for the first time, he
will be without those teammates,
close friends and
most importantly, his family,
as he moves on to Bloomington
for the next stage of
his life. It’s a challenge he is
looking forward to take on.
“I’m ready for the change
and growing up, and being
in something new to experience,”
Figus said. “I think
I’m ready for it.”

Alumni Spotlight
North graduate continues softball
success at North Central College
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
Lincoln-Way North softball
player and class of 2014
graduate, Jenna Trojniar, recently
completed her second
season of college softball
with her team at North Central
College in Naperville,
Illinois.
She learned quickly that
college-level softball was
more intense than in high
school, but the Mokena native
thrived under the pressure
instead of being defeated
by it.
“It’s definitely different,”
Trojniar said. “The intensity
level is higher; the competition
is more intense. In high
school you have people who
aren’t the best players, but
in college, everyone’s best
players are on the field. It’s
a lot harder.”
But Trojniar has a long
history of success within
her sport. She began playing
with the Mokena Park District
at 8 years old and then
continued on to the Lincoln
Way Blue Wave for eight
years and then the Tinley
Park Rockers for one year.
All this experience prepared
Trojniar for high
school softball and once she
began her career with North,
she spent three of her four
years on the varsity team.
“I definitely miss playing
for my coach, Amy Lonigro,”
Trojniar said. “She
always pushed us harder.
She always told us what we
needed to work on.”
The great coaches that Trojniar
had during high school
as well as in her younger
years helped prepare her for
the intensity of college softball,
Trojniar said.
Lincoln-Way North graduate Jenna Trojniar bats during one of her regular season games
with North Central College. Photo submitted
“I never have coaches who
were just half doing their
jobs,” she said. “Coaches
would push me to do my
best. That helped in college
because now I have a work
mentality and to keep pushing
because I know I can do
better.”
This past season, Trojniar
helped her team to a 20-18
record (8-6 in conference)
and finish third place in their
regular season. They finished
second in conference
under Wheaton College.
Personally, Trojniar earn
a Great Lakes All-Region
selection, a First-Team All-
Conference selection, she
finished 12th in conference
for her batting average and
boasts a perfect fielding percentage.
“It’s an amazing feeling
especially since I’ve been
playing so long,” Trojniar
said of her accolades. “All
the hard work is paying off.
Since I only have two years
left I’m grateful for the
awards I’ve received this
past season.”
It has not been easy for
Trojniar to play softball in
college and earn so many
awards. She is also juggling
an Exercise Science major
along with her sport.
“It was a little tough at
first getting into the groove
of being at practice on time
and getting my studying
done,” Trojniar admitted.
“But after a while life gets
so much easier when you
find the groove.”
With two more years of
eligibility left, there’s no
telling what Trojniar will be
able to achieve in her last
two years at North Central.
Unfortunately, she said
that these last two years of
college will also be the last
two years for her to play
softball as well. However,
she is open to coaching and
Trojniar said she has thought
about that option a lot.
“I’d love to be able to
coach younger girls,” she
said. “To be able to pass it
along. It’s definitely something
I’ve thought about.

A Phoenix to continue soaring on the Hawks
James Sanchez
Assistant Editor
Lincoln-Way North graduate
Molly Kapala has traveled
all over the country for
softball, except the northeast
region.
But now, the standout
shortstop will spend the next
four years in that area as she
will join St. Joseph’s University
in Philadelphia on an athletic
scholarship. She capped
off a senior career batting
.459 with six home runs, 36
RBI and 44 runs before moving
on to the Hawks.
“I’m beyond excited,”
Kapala said. “I can’t wait. I
think it’s a really big privilege
and a big responsibility,
but I think it shows how
hard that I have personally
worked to get here.”
She began playing the
sport at 5-years-old, which
she said was the earliest age
to enter T-ball on her Mokena-based
team. However,
the commitment to take the
game seriously started when
she was about 10-years-old,
after her travel coach said
she could play college softball
if she stayed with it.
In order to stay committed,
a passion for the sport
is necessary, which is something
Kapala realized at a
young age.
“I like seeing my teammates
get better, as well as
seeing myself get better, and
it’s just so much fun to go
out and play as a team and
work towards a goal together,”
she said.
That love for the game
grew when she got to know
North coach Aimee Lonigro
through camps. Lonigro had
an impressive athletic career
at Indiana University and
parlayed that into coaching,
which included a state championship
at East in 2002, despite
having no seniors on
the roster.
Even before she entered
North, Kapala said Lonigro
was always there working
with her during the high
school camps, and it influenced
her to keep playing.
“That’s what I looked forward
to when I came into
high school was playing for
her — not just playing softball,”
Kapala said. “She’s
just accomplished so much,
and I just loved her competitiveness.
And I’m personally
so competitive, and having a
coach that’s so similar in that
regard, it makes you want to
play even more.”
Lonigro gave her the opportunity
be on the varsity
team her freshman year,
and Kapala said that move
was vital to her career. She
was able to learn what it is
like on the highest level at
14-years-old, and the experience
prepped her to be a
leader down the road.
“She took a chance,” Kapala
said. “She didn’t have
to put me on varsity, but she
did anyway, and that really
improved me as a player.”
As a freshman, Kapala
was part of the team that
won the school’s first regional
championship — one
of her favorite memories in
a North uniform. Two years
later, another memory was
made, as she committed to
In his grade school years,
Mokena resident Zac Morgan
wasn’t allowed to play
football because he was
much bigger than everyone
else his age.
But the offensive tackle
made up for lost time by
having stellar careers at
Providence Catholic and the
University of Dayton. Now,
Morgan will use his last year
of NCAA eligibility to go
from Dayton to the University
of Oregon as a graduate
transfer.
Quick learner
Because of his size at a
young age, Morgan said his
parents didn’t allow him to
play football until he got to
high school.
“But growing up, I had
three older sisters who all
went to Providence — which
is known for being a football
powerhouse with such
a strong tradition there,” he
said. “I grew up going to the
games, and I fell in love with
the idea that it could be me
out there in the future.”
He started playing football
his freshman year at Providence.
His first two years,
he played a bit of defense
but was mostly an offensive
tackle — a position he has
played his entire career.
“I grew into my body a
little bit and finally was able
to use my strength to my advantage,”
he said.
football with the University of Oregon. Photo submitted
He capped his Providence
career with a first-team All-
Conference selection, and
Morgan redshirted his freshman
season at Dayton in
2012.
Morgan was a rotational
player the first few times he
got into games his sophomore
year. But after an injury
to a senior teammate,
Morgan said he started five
games in a row.
The next two years, he
started every game.
“I probably played more
plays than anybody on my
team,” Morgan said. “I never
came off the field, and I
wasn’t injured at all. I stayed
on for field goals, too.”
Morgan credited his
coaches at Dayton for teaching
him the game and preparing
him well.
“Game experience definitely
helps,” he added. “I
remember first playing my
sophomore year at Dayton,
and things were going
a mile a minute. But last
year, things came to me a lot
slower. I was able to dissect
things as they were happening
during play.”
This last season, led by
a core group of seniors,
Dayton won its conference
championship, finishing the
season 10-2.
Morgan said he’ll always
remember clinching the conference
crown in a game
against Marist College.
“It was our 10th win of the
year, and everyone was going
nuts,” he said. “Our families
were on the field after
the game. Everybody’s families
were really invested in
the team, and they were traveling
with us everywhere. It
was a lot of fun to be able to
share that with everybody.
“The four years at Dayton
were — so far — the best
four years of my life.”
Racking up the awards
During his time at Dayton,
Morgan was named as a firstteam
All-Pioneer Football
League selection (2015), an
honorable mention All-PFL
selection (2014), twice a
second-team Academic PFL
selection, and three times
a member of the PFL Academic
Honor Roll. He also
was recipient of the Stan
Kurdziel Outstanding Lineman
Award two years in a
row (2014, 2015).
“That was an award that
was voted on by my teammates,
so I think that makes
it even more of a big deal
for me — just knowing that
I have that sort of appreciation
from all those guys,”
Morgan said. “It means the
world to me.”
On to Oregon
After the Flyers’ season
ended, Morgan visited Providence
Catholic during winter
break.
“I was at home lifting at
Providence, and my high
school head coach came up
to me and said there was
this guy from Oregon who
was there and he was asking
about me,” Morgan said.
“He gave his contact info
and left it for me. I called
him and sent my transcripts
and some film.
“Everything kind of blew
up from that over winter
break.”
In mid-January, Morgan
said coaches flew out to
Dayton to meet him. Then,
around Jan. 30, he visited
the campus and signed the
paperwork. As a graduate
transfer, he has one year left
of eligibility.
Reached by phone July 7,
Morgan said he had been in
Eugene, Oregon for close to
three weeks going to summer
workouts with the team,
as well as summer classes.
Morgan said the workload
was similar to that of Dayton
— just kicked up a notch.
“At Dayton, we worked
our butts off, too, and the
work level is about the
same,” he said. “But everybody
is a little bit bigger, a
little bit faster. And there’s
definitely a lot more [funding]
in this program than
there was at Dayton.
“I tell people that this
whole facility is like Disney
World for football players.”
As for classes, Morgan —
a finance major at Dayton —
is taking economics courses
at Oregon for his master’s
program.
“It’s an unbelievable opportunity,”
he said. “I’m
working right now to become
the best I can be and
earn a playing position this
fall. I want to do whatever
I can to help my team win,
and hopefully take Oregon
back to the college football
playoffs.”
Listen Up
“As a team, that’s when we really connected – seniors
through juniors. We really came together, and I never felt we
would lose any of those games in the summer.”
