Chile
Altiplano: A Perfect Combination
Argentina
In addition to sharing indigenous and colonial heritage in the high desert through archaeologic sites
and attractive villages, Northern Chile and Argentina both offer dramatic desert scenery with towering
volcanoes, salt flats, and spectacular rock formations. The Atacama Desert in the north of Chile is the
most arid desert in the world and an important archaeological zone. On the Argentine side, Salta is one
of the most picturesque cities in the country. From there, visit other colonial villages as well as the curious
rock formations of the Cafayate River Gorge.
Planning tips for Northern Chile & Argentina:
Climate: San Pedro de Atacama is at 8,000 feet of elevation and the climate is
moderate. More than 90% of days will be sunny with occasional showers
January - March. Night skies will be cloudless with superb views of the stars.
At 4,000 feet of elevation, Salta has a pleasant four-season climate.
Geography & Transportation: Travelers starting on the Chilean side will fly from
Santiago to the airport in Calama and then have a two-hour ground transfer to San
Pedro de Atacama, your base for exploring the desert. Travel time from Atacama to
Salta in Argentina is about 10 1/2 hours by bus, but to simplify this journey we
recommend you do a private transfer with our local ground operator. Consider stopping
for a night at Purmamarca, about 2½ hours before Salta. The next day, you can take an
excursion to Humahuaca Gorge before continuing on to Salta. Flights from Salta to
Buenos Aires take about two hours.
