Krupp Internship Program for <strong>Stanford</strong> Students <strong>in</strong> Germany

The Krupp Internship Program arranges 3-<br />
6 month, fully paid <strong>in</strong>ternships with lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
companies and <strong>in</strong>stitutions from all over<br />
Germany for students of any major/m<strong>in</strong>or<br />
who have participated for at least one quarter<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Stanford</strong>-<strong>in</strong>-Berl<strong>in</strong> Program and<br />
have completed the equivalent of 1 year of<br />
college-level German. P<strong>re</strong>-medical students<br />
have access to <strong>in</strong>c<strong>re</strong>dible hands-on experiences<br />
through the Krupp Internship Program.<br />
Past placements have <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong> biology, chemistry, and psy-<br />

chology. The program has placed students <strong>in</strong><br />
hospitals (with departmental rotation and/or<br />
with emergency room access), commercial<br />
and government <strong>re</strong>search <strong>in</strong>stitutions (sometimes<br />
<strong>in</strong> connection with hospitals and cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />
facilities), associations of classical and alternative<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e, and veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g these <strong>in</strong>ternships, students shadow<br />
doctors, do lab <strong>re</strong>search, exam<strong>in</strong>e and consult<br />
with patients, and learn about public and<br />
private health ca<strong>re</strong> systems <strong>in</strong> Germany.

Internships provide first-hand p<strong>re</strong>medical<br />
experience and may help students decide<br />
whether medical school is the right choice<br />
for them. A medical <strong>in</strong>ternship abroad enhances<br />
an academic <strong>re</strong>cord while provid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
deeply enrich<strong>in</strong>g, personal experience at a<br />
key po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> a student’s academic ca<strong>re</strong>er. Stu-<br />

dents shouldn’t be <strong>in</strong>timidated by the prospect<br />
of work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a fo<strong>re</strong>ign language and<br />
cultu<strong>re</strong>—as students f<strong>re</strong>quently <strong>re</strong>port, that is<br />
actually the most excit<strong>in</strong>g part! Countless<br />
cases prove that, with fo<strong>re</strong>sight, it is easily<br />
manageable to study abroad, complete an<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternship, and still graduate on time.<br />
I got to work every day at 7 am whe<strong>re</strong> I spent the first<br />
hour draw<strong>in</strong>g blood, adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g IVs, giv<strong>in</strong>g shots,<br />
and lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>travenous needles. Around 8 am I would<br />
accompany an assistant ward doctor and another German<br />
medical student on ward rounds. This would take<br />
between 2 and 3 hours. I would listen to the doctor chat<br />
with the patients, answer questions, and expla<strong>in</strong> test<br />
<strong>re</strong>sults. Dur<strong>in</strong>g these rounds I learned how to listen to<br />
the heartbeat and lung through a stethoscope. Then we<br />
would all eat b<strong>re</strong>akfast together around 11 am. After<br />
b<strong>re</strong>akfast I would jo<strong>in</strong> other medical students <strong>in</strong> talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with new patients whe<strong>re</strong> we would take patient medical<br />
history and perform basic physical exam<strong>in</strong>ations.<br />
Throughout the day I would draw blood and give patients<br />
medication. The workday would end between<br />
2:30 and 3 pm. Every Wednesday I attended an hour<br />
long class session with the other medical students<br />
whe<strong>re</strong> we learned how to <strong>re</strong>ad EKGs or how to identify<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> diseases. My tasks we<strong>re</strong> very worthwhile. I will<br />
use them <strong>in</strong> the futu<strong>re</strong>, because I would like to become<br />
a doctor. I got to do th<strong>in</strong>gs that students <strong>in</strong> America<br />
cannot do until much later on <strong>in</strong> their medical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
It was very excit<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
