REACH of Central Florida at 

the Frontline Outreach Center

REACH of Central Florida Outreach 

Christmas is known as a time for ice skating, 

family dinners, last minute shopping and 

the abundance of peppermint flavored food 

items. However, more importantly, this is also the 

season of giving. This past December, REACH 

(Recognizing | Experiencing | Asian | Cultural | 

Heritage) of Central Florida hosted its annual toy 

drive benefiting the local Harbor House as well as 

Frontline Outreach. With the help of over ten local 

high schools, companies, and organizations, 

REACH was able to raise over 700 toys for local 

children. 

The Harbor House is a 24 hour safe haven 

for survivors of domestic violence and abuse 

that provides a safe home for them at no cost. 

For over thirty years, this organization has been 

providing survivors with counseling, daycares 

for children, professional job training, and other 

valuable resources to help them get back on their 

feet. Moreover, Harbor House provides legal assistance 

for the survivors and is an active advocate 

towards the ending of domestic violence 

and abuse. On December 19th, REACH members 

went to the organization’s main campus and 

passed out toys to the children. The smile and 

the pure joy these kids have over getting a new 

toy is what makes this toy drive worth it. 

This is the first year that REACH has partnered 

with Frontline Outreach, an organization in 

downtown Orlando that for over fifty years has 

provided children and family programs for urban 

youth as young as two years old. Recognizing 

the potential these kids have, this organization 

provides academic, leadership, and entrepreneur 

programs with the hope that they can have a positive 

impact on their community. On December 

20, around 20 REACH members volunteered at 

the organization’s annual Community Christmas 

Event, helping set up, serve food, and pass out 

toys to kids. It was a fantastic afternoon filled with 

singing, dancing, and laughter that truly embodied 

the Christmas spirit.

I want to say that it is an honor to have the opportunity 

to work with two local organizations 

that are so passionate about helping others. 

They have definitely reminded all of us the importance 

of the gift of giving, something that should 

be given year round, not just at Christmastime. 

I also want to thank the organizations from Winter 

Park High School, Cypress Creek High School, 

University High School, Freedom High School 

and Dr. Philips High School and other organizations 

such as Florida College of Integrative 

Medicine, The Chinese School of CAACF, 

Commerce National Bank & Trust, and Citrus 

Figure Skating club for their generosity and support 

of the toy drive. Your donations and hard 

work are greatly appreciated! Thank you all 

for helping us bring the holiday spirit to Harbor 

House and Frontline Outreach this year! 

Wendy Ng is a senior in University High 

School’s International Baccalaureate program. 

She is also the president of REACH Of Central 

Florida. After high school, she plans to go to 

college and major in either Computer Science 

or Biomedical Engineering.

Give yoga a try 

and discover what it can do for body and mind 

A central premise in yoga is “everything is 

connected.” That’s clear when looking at the 

health and fitness benefits of yoga that have long 

been reported by practitioners and are now being 

confirmed by scientific research. 

1. STRESS RELIEF: Yoga reduces the physical 

effects of stress on the body by encouraging 

relaxation and lowering the levels of the stress 

hormone, cortisol. Related benefits include lowering 

blood pressure and heart rate, improving 

digestion and boosting the 

immune system, as well as 

easing symptoms of 

conditions such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, 

asthma and insomnia. 

2. PAIN RELIEF: Yoga can ease pain. 

Studies have demonstrated that practicing 

Yoga asanas (postures), meditation 

or a combination of the two, reduced pain 

for people with conditions such as cancer, 

multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases 

and hypertension as well as arthritis, back 

and neck pain and other chronic conditions. 

3. BETTER BREATHING: Yoga teaches 

people to take slower, deeper breaths. 

This helps to improve lung function and 

trigger the body’s relaxation response. 

4. FLEXIBILITY: Yoga helps to improve 

flexibility and mobility, increasing range of 

movement and reducing aches and pains. 

5. INCREASED STRENGTH: Yoga asanas 

(postures) use every muscle in the body, helping 

to increase strength literally from head to toe. 

Yoga also helps to relieve muscular tension. 

6. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: Yoga (even less 

vigorous styles) can aid weight control efforts by 

reducing the cortisol levels, as well as by burning 

excess calories and reducing stress. Yoga also 

encourages healthy eating habits and provides a 

heightened sense of well being and self-esteem. 

7. IMPROVED CIRCULATION: 

Yoga helps to improve circulation 

and, as a result of various poses, 

more efficiently moves oxygenated blood to the 

body’s cells. 

8. CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING: Even 

gentle yoga practice can provide cardiovascular 

benefits by lowering resting heart rate, increasing 

endurance and improving oxygen uptake during 

exercise. 

9. BETTER BODY ALIGNMENT: Yoga helps to 

improve body alignment, resulting in better posture 

and helping to relieve back, neck, joint and 

muscle problems. 

10. FOCUS ON THE PRESENT: Yoga helps us 

to focus on the present, to become more aware 

and to help create mind body health. It opens the 

way to improved coordination, reaction time and 

memory. 

Alpa Bhatia has been enjoying the benefits of yoga all her life. She is a nationally certified yoga 

teacher and has been teaching yoga over 12 years. Alpa has also been in service to her community as 

a children’s yoga instructor at several after school programs and seniors yoga at several yoga studios. She 

has also taught at the Golds gym for the past 10 years and now a power yoga instructor at various locations at LA 

fitness. Alpa is also a professor of yoga at Barnett Honors College UCF, and teaches Therapeutic Yoga at UCF Pegasus Health Care Center. She 

is passionate about yoga and the benefits each person can gain from the practice no matter the age. Alpa will host different yoga classes at the Asia

is home both to largest Muslim population in the world and 

to a vast array of vibrant literary, artistic, and to cultural traditions. 

Classes are student-centered, focused on role-play of practical, 

real-life situations such as shopping, meeting friends, and 

ordering food at a restaurant. Emphasis is placed on fluency and

at the Orlando Japan Festival 

The Orlando Japan Festival is an annual 

event put on by the Japan Association of Orlando, 

the local Orlando Japanese community, and 

is one of my favorite events of the year – where 

you can have a taste of the street food from Japan 

like takoyaki octopus balls to gyu don beef 

rice bowls, and of course sushi, all while enjoying 

traditional Japanese cultural entertainment. It’s a 

wonderful event to take the whole family. 

The event, which was once hosted at the 

Rangetsu building on International Drive, is now 

put on at the Hunter’s Creek plaza just south of 

SR 417 on John Young Parkway for the past few 

years. 

There are amazing traditional performances 

like the 100 Drummers taiko performance performed 

by Matsuriza of the Disney Epcot Japan 

Pavilion, Koto (Japanese harp player), traditional 

Japanese Dance, Tsugaru-Shamisen, the ageold 

iconic Tea Ceremony (symbolic of Japan’s 

oldest traditions), Japanese Calligraphy (shodo), 

Martial Arts demonstrations, as well as a chance 

to try-out real Japanese Kimonos. Many guests 

also participated in Cosplay, a popular form of expression 

through costume at the Japan Festival 

- dressing up as their favorite game and anime 

characters. 

Mr. Rosen, a huge supporter of the local 

community, including the Japanese, donated 

$100,000 to Japan in 2011 after the Tsunami and 

was at the festival to promote the event and even 

participate in the Japanese tea ceremony. 

My favorite aspect of the festival is the many

nese restaurant community including Rangetsu, 

Sushi Tomi, Japan Food Aki, the Disney Epcot

Philippine Embassy, Washington D.C. Outreach Consular Services 

In response to an overwhelming need for 

Consular services, the Council For Filipino American 

Organizations, otherwise known as CFAO 

partnered with the Philippine Embassy, Washington 

D.C. in the conduct of another Consular 

Outreach held on September 27 and 28, 2014 at 

the Marks Senior Center, Orlando Florida. 

For two consecutive days, the Consular 

Outreach Team worked with frenetic speed to 

accomplish the scheduled appointments. Headed 

by Mr. Emil Fernandez, Consul General, the rest 

of the Consular Team composed of Joey Macalula, 

Eden Regalado, Carol Castaneda, Cynthia 

Tayam, and Aurora Real provided services to 

386 Filipino immigrants, and Filipino- Americans. 

Breakdown of services is as follows: passport 

processing, 298; Dual Citizenship processing 

and Oath Taking, 68; and legalization (of documents),

to the painted utility cabinets, art dumpsters and murals. Mills 50 

has more murals than any other district in the City of Orlando. The

―Calligraphy by HU Ching-San from Taiwan 

Since its establishment in October 1988 in 

Coral Gables―“The City Beautiful,” the Taipei 

Economic and Cultural Office in Miami (TECO 

in Miami, formerly the Coordination Council for 

North American Affairs, Miami Office) has devoted 

itself to the promotion of bilateral relations 

between Taiwan and the State of Florida. 

In order to further enhance Taiwan-Florida 

cultural exchange and advocate the richness 

of Chinese culture, TECO in Miami assists in 

presenting “The Development of Chinese Character 

Scripts―Calligraphy by HU Ching-San 

from Taiwan,” an exhibit jointly hosted by the 

Chinese American Scholars and Professionals 

Association of Florida (CASPAF) and the Coral 

Gables Museum. The A Calligraphy exhibition, 

from December 5, 2014 to February 1, 2015, is 

the very first of a circuit exhibition displaying the 

calligraphic works of Mr. HU Ching-san. The presentation 

of Mr. HU’s work marks a milestone in 

cross-cultural exchange, as it enriches the cultural 

fabric shared between Taiwan and the State 

of Florida.

SACA and the City of Largo will be hosting the Chinese New Year celebration at Largo 

Central Park. This will be the largest and only out-door Chinese New Year celebration in 

the Tampa Bay area. In addition to Chinese crafts / food vendors, there will be lion and 

dragon dances, traditional Chinese performances, and children games. This celebration is
