What is the <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Japan Prize <strong>on</strong> ESD?<br />
The <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Japan Prize <strong>on</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Sustainable</strong><br />
<strong>Development</strong> (ESD) c<strong>on</strong>sists of three annual awards of US$50,000<br />
each. Funded by the Government of Japan, the Prize will be<br />
awarded <strong>for</strong> the first time in 2015.<br />
Why a Prize <strong>on</strong> ESD?<br />
The <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Japan Prize <strong>on</strong> ESD h<strong>on</strong>ours outstanding ef<strong>for</strong>ts by<br />
individuals, instituti<strong>on</strong>s, organizati<strong>on</strong>s and other entities engaged<br />
in activities promoting educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>for</strong> sustainable development, as<br />
part of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Global</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Acti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Programme</str<strong>on</strong>g> (GAP) <strong>on</strong> ESD. Three criteria<br />
are applied to assess nominees:<br />

Trans<strong>for</strong>mati<strong>on</strong>: The project/programme uses ESD<br />
as trans<strong>for</strong>mative educati<strong>on</strong> in support of sustainable<br />
development and produces evidence of individual and social<br />
change, involving values and acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
→→<br />
Integrati<strong>on</strong>: The project/programme addresses the three<br />
dimensi<strong>on</strong>s of sustainable development (society, ec<strong>on</strong>omy,<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment) in an integrated way.<br />
→→<br />
Innovati<strong>on</strong>: The project/programme dem<strong>on</strong>strates an<br />
innovative and imaginative approach to ESD.<br />
In additi<strong>on</strong>, the project/programme should have a high impact<br />
relative to the invested resources; it should be replicable and<br />
scalable; and it should c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>on</strong>e or more of the GAP’s five<br />
Priority <str<strong>on</strong>g>Acti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Areas (advancing policy, learning and educati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
capacity building, mobilizing youth, local acti<strong>on</strong>).<br />
Who can win the <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Japan Prize <strong>on</strong> ESD?<br />
Individuals, instituti<strong>on</strong>s, organizati<strong>on</strong>s or other entities engaged<br />
in ESD are all eligible to win the <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Japan Prize <strong>on</strong> ESD.<br />
The nominati<strong>on</strong>s must be made by governments and by n<strong>on</strong>governmental<br />
organizati<strong>on</strong>s (NGOs) in official relati<strong>on</strong>s with<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Each Member State or NGO can submit up to three<br />
nominati<strong>on</strong>s per year.<br />
Who can submit nominati<strong>on</strong>s?<br />
Nominati<strong>on</strong>s should be submitted to the Director-General<br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> by governments of Member States and n<strong>on</strong>governmental<br />
organizati<strong>on</strong>s in official relati<strong>on</strong>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
Each government or NGO is allowed up to three nominati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
Nominati<strong>on</strong>s by governments must be <strong>for</strong>warded electr<strong>on</strong>ically by<br />
the Member State’s Permanent Delegati<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
