PUBLISHER'S
LETTER
Wine, food, adventure and touring in the South African winelands
are a few of my favourite things. The Wine Tourism Handbook is a
compendium of all that makes life worth living in this magnificent
wine region of the world.
As a publisher the ultimate #happydance is the end result of
putting a publication together that meets a market and its readers.
The South African wine tourism industry’s consumers are those
people looking for experiences: new ones, richer ones, deeper
ones, and more authentic ones. You are upwardly mobile; you
want to engage in a story involving landscapes, food, people, and
history and, of course, our wines. You, the wine traveller wants
to be moved in a fundamental way and you want to connect on
a memorable level. The Wine Tourism Handbook will meet you
there. And of course with the obligatory #SAwinelands #Selfie
I believe the metanarrative of wine tourism in South Africa is as
important as the narratives told by wine farms in their individual
capacity. It is vital to put people first and to acknowledge who
we are, what we want, where we want to go and what we want
to contribute. Clicking through these pages, you will not only be
exploring our rich culture but will be inspired to come and visit.
The basic of packaging any travel experience is about straddling
the product, the environment in which it is produced, consumer
expectations and ideals. I hope that you enjoy the content in
these pages, and also offer you a slice of South Africa #SliceofSA.
I would love to hear from you and hear
about your best wine farm experience,
and what you love about South
African wine country.
through the impressive Huguenot
Tunnel on the N1, an altogether
greener, cleaner world opens up
to you. First you pass through
the mountain-ringed Breedekloof
wine district – worth a detour
in itself – and soon you are met
with a choice: left to the Karoo
Desert National Botanic Garden,
straight on into the wineless
Karoo or right to the market
town of Worcester and, beyond
it, its winelands and those of
Robertson and Bonnievale.
A country call
The Worcester Wine & Olive
route centres on the town
of Worcester, but the area’s rugged scenic
grandeur is in contrast with the town’s wellpreserved
historic buildings, museums,
galleries, ordered avenues and open spaces.
Surrounded by mountains and irrigated by a
large river, farmers for centuries have found
this warm valley ideal for grapes and olives.
A river runs through it...
The free-flowing Breede River, which gives
its name to the Breedekloof and to one of
the local olive farms, Rio Largo, is the life
force of the Worcester wine and olive valley.
It feeds its dams and provides a welcome
respite from the considerable summer heat –
as well as scope for fishing, canoeing, rafting
and watersports of all kinds.
The surrounding Brandwacht, Overhex and
Langeberg Mountains and nature reserves
also provide plenty of challenge to the keen
hiker, biker and 4x4er. You can even soar
silently over the landscape in a glider.
An unexpected treasure trove
This is mostly a place to discover everyday
wines but there are significant exceptions.
Tanzanite’s MCC bubblies are very fine,
as are award-winning Alvi’s Drift red and
white blends and Chenin Blanc, augmented
now by an MCC as well. Eagle’s Cliff is
certainly worth visiting for its growing
range of excellent wines (also MCC) and
platters at the Bistro. Conradie Penhill
Artisinal Wines and Leipzig with its Country
House and farm experiences also keep the
Nuy Valley humming, co-hosting the other
popular annual 'Nuy Valley Feast' in May.
SOMETHING CLEVER
Olives from Willow Creek
Willow Creek know their olives: 200 000
olive trees mean they have scale, but
quality and innovation don’t suffer:
Cabernet Sauvignon balsamic vinegar, plus
lemon, parmesan and basil-infused olive
oils may trouble purists, but, along with
their squeeze packaging innovation, their
cleverness and convenience win us over –
as do their delicious Rosemary and Garlic
olives and Thai and Chilli tapenades. You
can buy olive trees and eat at the Bistro!
KwaZulu-Natal4
KWAZULU-NATAL
The delightful Midlands Meander is one of the province’s chief drawcards with
its beaches, mountains, artistic inhabitants – and the same three intrepid winemakers,
pioneering away in this unlikely and fascinating location.
Did you
know...
Abingdon
runs Wine
And they
T
Meander –
wine completes
the picture
KwaZulu-Natal has myriad
attractions. From the beautiful
white sand beaches on the
Indian Ocean coastline, the
bustling city of Durban with its
eclectic mix of cultures and
strong (as in spicy) food culture,
to the rolling hills and rugged
mountains of the interior, the
lushness of the landscape
and the friendliness of the
people. A visit here would not
be complete without visiting
the battlefields, strolling the
people-watching Mecca that is
Durban’s beachfront, engaging
with the Zulu culture, hiking
in the Drakensberg, seeking
ABINGDON WINE ESTATE
out specialised arts and crafts - and tasting
wine, of course! KwaZulu-Natal continues
to surprise with the quality of its wines that
comes from vines only planted experimentally
in Greytown just over 20 years ago in 1992.
Against all advice and odds, South Africa
now boasts a wine region slap bang in
the middle of the Midlands, with minimal
hectares under vine, but its three pioneers
are still very much hanging in there, despite
sometimes trying meteorological conditions!
Abingdon, Highgate and the
Wine Cellar story…
The region remains home to one of the
highest vineyards in the country at Abingdon
wine estate, at 1 140m above sea level! The
ever-enthusiastic Smorthwaites appear to
sell out their wines with ease, while adding
new options each year. Reds, whites and a
Blanc de Noir from 2.5 hectares of Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,
Shiraz and award-winning Viognier are now
accompanied by a new First Decade blend to
mark ten years of winemaking, which will also
be celebrated early next year with the advent
of two MCCs – a Chardonnay and a Shiraz/
Cabernet blend. Meanwhile, the restaurant
is going great guns (booking essential).
It remains a great Midlands Meander stop.
Not far away, Highgate Wine Estate in Lion’s
River near Howick continues its revival and,
indeed, expansion as it plans to double its
plantings to 4ha of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz and Chardonnay in
the next few years. Its own tasting room at
the Highgate Wine Estate Cellar next to the
popular neighbouring Piggly Wiggly Centre
should be open by the time you read this:
2011 Pinotage, Shiraz and Chardonnay on
offer. Small amounts of 2014 Chardonnay
and a red blend are due in 2015 after a tough
hail-blighted harvest. Finally, at the Wine
Cellar in Rosetta, a wine-selling institution
a bit further north, their Cabernet Franc
grapes were eaten by friends and family
this year – but may yet be made into wine!
In the meantime, their two Wine Cellar
blends (made from Cape grapes) will have
to suffice. You can dine and stay over too.
The treasure troves of KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal is known as a sun, sea and
sand destination, but also as a place to delve
into the cultural history of the region in the
famous battlefields area around Rorke’s Drift.
Then there’s the Midlands Meander, a series of
routes themed around a cornucopia of arts and
crafts, history and fabulous food that winds
its way through the heart of the region. Funky
pottery from Ardmore and Dargle, beautifully
turned wooden bowls at the Woodturners,
characterful cheeses from Swissland,
colourful carpets from Shuttleworth Weavers,
excellent craft beer from the Nottingham Road
Brewery at Rawdons and so much more.
You could spend a month here and just scratch
the surface of this creative treasure trove.
Heritage Sites to boot.
Wildlife
KwaZulu-Natal has many game reserves:
perhaps the best-known is the Hluhluwe-
Imfolozi Park about two hours north of
Durban. It’s the oldest game park in Africa
and the only one here home to the Big 5.
It covers some 96 000ha and plays a
central role in the fight to save the rhino.
A visit would not be complete without seeing
the majestic uKhahlamaba-Drakensberg
Mountain Park, a World Heritage site, borders
the kingdom of Lesotho – a breathtaking
view in several senses: hikes there are
a plenty, but the mountains are the real
thing and should be treated with respect.
Exploring them on horseback is also an
option and one well worth considering.
The other noteworthy attraction in KwaZulu-
Natal is the wildlife – expansive game
reserves with long-established reputations
(and royal histories) include the Hluhluwe-
Imfolozi Park and the Itala Game Reserve,
as well as a second World Heritage Site: the
as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park. This
dramatic area takes in the St. Lucia Estuary
and its Indian ocean coastline, home to
hippos in abundance (you might find one in
your garden if you stay in St Lucia village!).
