The Kitimat Visitor Centre welcomes its two summer students, who will be helping visitors find out what
there is to do in Kitimat. Alyssa and Robyn started working at the Visitor Centre at the end of June and
will be the friendly faces greeting travellers until they go back to school in September.
Robyn Alderman was born and raised in Kitimat. For the last year she has
been away at school studying in the Therapy Assistant Program in Kelowna.
In the Fall she will be heading back to Kelowna to start her studies in a 4 year
Business Degree. Robyn wanted to work at the Chamber of Commerce and
and enjoys interacting with the visitors. Robyn’s interests include hiking,
travelling and the outdoors.
Alyssa Dillabough was born and raised here in Kitimat and grew up fishing,
hiking and enjoying the outdoors. Alyssa wants to pursue a career in nursing
and obtain her nursing degree. Her hobbies include hiking and going to the
JULY 2016

Kitimat Chamber of Commerce
Chair - Wendy Kraft
Summer is in full swing and many of you are taking much needed
vacations! Summer doesn’t stop business or major announcements
and on July 11th, LNG Canada announced its decision to postpone
their Final Investment Decision to an undetermined date. I know
many of us were looking forward to a positive decision in December
of this year, but we are likely looking at some time in 2017 or 2018.
The great news is the project is still alive! Your Chamber will be
working hard to ensure that business in Kitimat remains informed,
supported and celebrated in the coming year. We are a resource
your business can use to help your business!
In late June 2016, our Chamber’s Past Chair, Derick Stinson, was
appointed to the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society Board of Directors.
Derick joins the Board as Ron Burnett has finished his term. The
Kitimat Chamber of Commerce is part owner of the Airport Society
and has been and will continue to be very involved. Thank you Ron
for your many years of hard work and congratulations Derick on your
new appointment!
Stay tuned for the upcoming Show and Shine in August and the
Annual Fish Derby in September!
Project Update
Pacific Future Energy Refinery Project
Pacific Future Energy proposes to build, with First Nations as cocreators,
a bitumen-to-fuels refinery on a site between Terrace and
Kitimat. It would produce diesel, gasoline, jet fuel and other products,
primarily for export but also to serve domestic demand. The Refinery
will have an input capacity of 200,000 barrels per day or 31,795 cubic
meters per day of bitumen called NEATBIT (neat bitumen). The
refinery would bring in NEATBIT bitumen by rail, reducing risks of
damage from land and water spills. The NEATBIT will be unloaded
into storage tanks located at Dubose Flats. The refinery would
be powered with clean energy and use the latest in technology to
achieve Near Zero Net Carbon emissions.
In January 2016, Pacific Future Energy filed its formal “Project
Description,” which provides the public with information about its
plans to build the world’s greenest bitumen refinery, with federal and
provincial regulators. The filing means that the BC Environmental
Assessment Office and the Canadian Environmental Assessment
Agency will soon kick off a government and public review process
that could take up to two years.
Haisla Nation & Ledcor Partnership
Last spring, the British Columbia government announced a $30-million
training fund for programs to help First Nations with the skills they need
to build careers in the LNG and natural resources sectors in Northern and
Northeastern BC. As funding rolls out, how can government, industry
and First Nations work together to ensure skills training translates into
real opportunity and employment?
In June 2016, an association of construction companies met with more
than a half dozen BC cabinet ministers, MLAs and staff to show how it’s
done. Its goal was to raise awareness about a unique partnership that
is setting the standard in how companies and Aboriginal Communities
work together.
“Ledcor’s successful partnership with Haisla Nation has led to new
business opportunities and lasting community benefits,” said Paul de
Jong, President of the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada
(PCA). “This is the kind of progressive model of construction that helps
move resource projects forward. It’s a model worth replicating.”
The Progressive Contractors Association of Canada is urging government
to encourage industry across the province to follow Ledcor’s lead. For
the past five years, Ledcor, a diverse construction company, has been
training, mentoring and hiring Haisla Band Members at project sites.
When work slowed in Kitimat, the company made sure their skills were
put to work by moving 15 Haisla Band Members to a project in Fort
Hills, Alberta, to gain job experience.
“Ledcor has proven it truly has the Haisla Band Members’ best interests
at heart,” said Paula Smith, Job Coach at Haisla Nation. “The company
went above and beyond by hiring Band Members outside the local area.”
Ledcor also provides profit sharing and scholarships. Its community
support ranges from hosting information sessions and open houses,
to snow clearing on village streets in the Haisla community following a
major snowstorm in winter 2015.
“Our partnership with Haisla Nation exemplifies our company’s
core values,” said Quentin Huillery, Senior Vice President of Ledcor
Constructors. “We look for ways to engage with the local community
and build lasting relationships that make a difference long after a project
has wrapped up.”
In 2011, Ledcor formed the Ledcor-Haisla Limited Partnership (LHLP)
to explore potential LNG projects in the Kitimat Region. It has been
selected by LNG Canada for site preparation activities in Kitimat.
Kitimat Chamber of Commerce
Kitimat’s World-Class Race Walker
Ben Thorne was born and raised in Kitimat. In 2007 he joined the Mount Elizabeth Secondary School (MESS) track team in grade 8. Candyce Muzylowski
(parent, community coach, former Kitimat resident) offered to teach the kids race walking. The other teams in the BC Northwest Zone were somewhat
startled when the MESS team put in a request for a Race Walk event at track meets but were willing to go along and eventually, even joined in. Ben had
athletic talent and although his first passion was running, he tried everything and discovered he could win consistently at Race Walking. In Ben’s Grade
12 year (2011) he won gold and set a new provincial high school record, which is still unbeaten.
Adult distances for Race Walk for men are 20 or 50 km. Races are generally not held on stadium tracks but are on city streets and the courses are usually
fairly flat, and typically on a 2 km circuit. Ben does the 20 km event and says that he might try his hand at 50 km some time down the road. Top race
walkers walk faster than most recreational runners can run, doing 20 km in about 1 hour 20 minutes, or less.
Ben trains with fellow Race Walk West athletes, Inaki Gomez and Evan Dunfee, both of whom are also world class walkers. Up until last summer Ben
had a hard time beating them, and he was considered as Canada’s third-ranked walker at the 20 km distance. In last summer’s Pan Am Games in Toronto
he was not allowed to compete as only two competitors per country were allowed entry. His consolation prize was attending the World University Games
in Korea last July. There, he won the silver medal. About a month later he and his team mates were in Beijing, China, for the World Championships in
Athletics. Ben surprised himself and everyone else by winning the Bronze Medal and setting a new Canadian record, the first Canadian to go under 80
minutes in the 20 km race walk. And boy did that get him, and Race Walking in general, some attention back in Canada! In early May, Ben and his team
mates travelled to Rome, Italy, for the World Cup of Race Walking. Ben was the first Canadian to finish, placing 5th, and taking 2 seconds off his best time
for 20 km. The rest of the team did well too, and they came home with a team silver medal, the first time a Canadian team has ever done so.
Currently the team is in Switzerland training at high altitude and will fly into Rio about a week before the Olympic 20 km RW. They are completely focused
on doing the absolute best and hopefully bringing home a medal or two. The Men’s Olympic 20 km Race Walk will be on Friday, August 12th, 2016 at
2:30pm Rio time (10:30am Pacific Daylight Time).
Wishing Ben the best of luck at the Olympics next month in the hope he will bring home some metal!
