Canada is a North American country consisting of
10 provinces and three territories. It is located in
the northen part of the continent and it is the
second largest country by total area.
The name Canada comes from the word kanata and
it means village or settlement.
Canada reffered to the part of New France and at the end, it became a possesion
of the British Empire. Archeological and genetic studies say thay 26500 years
ago, Canada was populated by aboriginal peoples. European colisation started about
1497, and for many years, it was ruled by New France and after by the British
Empire. Because Britain still mantained control of Canada, it brought into the
World War I. Canada became independent in the 50s (exactly on the 1 st of July,
day of Canada). Now, it is one of the Commonwealth Nation. Elisabeth the II is
the headstate and Canada is one of the richest countries and the one which has
the highest living standards. It has got a wide variety of animals such like
beavers, bears, foxes... The capital city is Ottawa, but the biggest town is
Toronto. The national sport is Ice-Hockey, and there are many beautiful
landmarks. Canada is really big with an area of 9,984,670 km 2 and 34,3 million
people. In Canada two languages are spoken: English and French. Native Indigenous
are called Inuits and they live in igloos. In what concerns to geography, the
longest river is Mckenzie, the tallest mountain is Mount Logan
and the lake is Bear Lake. So, come
to Canada and you’ll have fun!
FREE WRITING: (CANADA)
How to write an informal letter
Informal letters are also known as personal letters. They are letters you write to people you
know well, like friends and relatives. When you write an informal letter there are a few rules
to pay attention to.
In informal letters, you can use all the abbreviations you like. You usually start an informal
letter with Dear plus the first name of the person you are writing to Dear John, Dear Aunt
Abbey, or Dear Mom – followed by a comma. You can end an informal letter with Love (if it’s
a close friend or relative). Remember to follow it with a comma.
Also remember to include a date (i.e; February 28, 2013 / February 28 th , 2013)
TASK
Visiting Canada Regulations
Every year, more than 35 million people travel to Canada to enjoy the many
opportunities the country has to offer, besides 1 visiting family and friends.
If you want to visit Canada, you must first find 2 out if you need a visitor (or a temporary resident) visa.
Many people do not have to apply for 3 a visa 4 to visit Canada. These include most European citizens, for example
Italians, and United States citizens and permanent residents. However, they must carry proper identification for
themselves and all children travelling with them. They mustn’t stay longer than six months. Moreover, if they want to
travel to Canada for reasons different from business or pleasure, for example for study or temporary work, they must
apply for a visa anyway 5 .
Some nationals (China, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan or Philippines) don’t have to apply for a visa if they are on transit 6
to the USA, but they must have a valid USA visa.
If your state is not included in the list of exempted nationals or you are a stateless individual you mustn’t try to enter
Canada without a visa, even if you are in transit to another country. You have to decide which visa is suitable for your
trip: are you going to Canada as a tourist, a visiting relative or a business visitor? In fact, visa application procedures
vary according to the type of visa.
All visitors must have a valid individual travel document, such as 7 a passport; be in good health; convince an
immigration officer that in their country of origin they have ties 8 , such as a job, home, financial assets 9 and a family,
that will take them back; convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit and have
enough money for your stay.
After your arrival in Canada, you mustn’t apply later than 30 days before your status 10 expires if you wish to change
your Canada visitor status: extend your visit or stay; change the type of permit you hold (for example, from a student
to a work permit); change a condition of your permit (for example, if you are studying and you want to change schools,
or if you are working and you want to change your job).
10) In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of studying in another country?
Explain.
In my opinion, studying in another country is both fantastic and terrible. It is fantastic
because you get to know new people, places, food and cultures; on the other hand, it is
terrible because you are away from home and you feel alone, even because you must
speak, read and understand another language. Moreover, you have to take care of
yourself and to be more responsible. I would like to live this experience, but at the
same time, I would be very worried before departure!
Among the native people of Canada are the Crees, Mohawks, Haida,
Iroquois and Sioux. There is also a big population of Inuits in the north
of the country.
The first immigrants from Europe arrived in Canada in
the 15th century. They were mainly from England and
Fra France, so now people speak English and French in Canada.
Canada is a huge country. It is bigger than India, China or the USA, but it has a smaller
population than these countries because forests cover most of it. Not many people live
in the countryside but the Canadians enjoy having their summer holidays there. Some
people have summer houses near lakes and rivers. Other enjoy camping in the National
Parks. There are 39 National Parks in Canada.
Canadian winters are long and very cold so there are lots of winter sports. The
most popular are skating and ice hockey. Many families put water on their
gardens so it freezes and then they have their ice rink!
Canada Day is celebrated on 1st July and marks the anniversary of the
Coming to Canada
By Mary Lynn Bushong
Caption: Saskatchewan sod house, about 1908
The lure to own land is hard to ignore. When Canada
opened up her West, she invited settlers to come. Come
they did from Europe and Asia. They all hoped to get a
piece of the world to call their own.
After the Northwest Rebellion was put down in 1885,
people began to flood into Canada. Ships were subsidized
by the government to bring the people to Canada.
People from all over Europe went to these boats. Most people could not afford private cabins on
the ships. Instead they traveled in steerage. There they were crammed with many others until
the ship docked.
Once the ship docked, they went to immigration. From there they went to trains. The trains
carried the people hundreds of miles. They rode until they reached the stations closest to their
new land.
People came from Britain and the United States. They also came from Russia, Germany,
Hungary, and Poland. Others came from Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Many people came
from China as well.
Many of the people who came were not farmers. They knew little about farming but were
ready to learn. They wanted to own land. They wanted to make a new start in life.
Every ten miles the railway had sidings where small towns grew up. Most of the settlers were
met at the towns by the Northwest Mounted Police. They were there to help the settlers get
ready to go to their land.
Many of the people did not have a clue of where to start. They even needed to be shown how
to set up tents, ride horses, or drive wagons.
Once the people were off the trains, they found where to go. Then they had to get there.
There were many possible ways to get across the land. They could take a train to the nearest
town. If their land was near the Saskatchewan River, they could hire a barge. The barge could
carry what they needed to get started.
If they were to travel by road, they usually used a wagon. Belongings, tools, and supplies
were loaded up. Then they were off to their land. A few were too poor even for that; they
walked.
If the land had trees, they were often cut for lumber. If it did not, a sod house was built into

the ground. Bleached skulls and bones from bison were often gathered for sale. They could earn
a few dollars per ton for the family.
Whole families worked the farms together. If they did not own a horse or an ox, they pulled
the plow themselves.
Rains often did not come at the right time. Sometimes grasshoppers ate all the grain. Even
the wind could be an enemy. It could knock the plants flat. Then the reaping machines could
not harvest it.
Worst of all were prairie fires. They could be started by lightning or by a spark from the
trains. Most farmers plowed firebreaks around their fields to keep fires away.
Working the new farms was back-breaking work. Many new farmers could not make it work.
It did not matter how hard they tried.
More people kept pouring West. They were ready to take up the challenge against the new
land.
Those who succeeded learned to work with the land. As they made progress, they made
profit. Soon wheat and oats grew where once there was only grass and bison. Canada's new
farmers were working to feed the world.
Work Experience
When writing about our work experience in a CV,
it’s important to include all of the important details
while keeping it short and simple.
1. Job Title
What was your position (or job title) in the company? It’s also important to see if your job
title has a “fancy” alternative title. For example: Teacher = Educational Consultant, Shop
Clerk = Sales Assistant, Janitor = Sanitation Worker
2. Company Name
Include the full name of your company.
3. Company Location
You should include the city, province, and country (if it’s international). You don’t have to
include the street name or building name.
4. Years Worked
You should list the month and year you worked there (i.e. January 2007 – March 2009) –
the exact day is not necessary. If you are still working there, you should say when you
began the job and end with “present” (i.e. July 2011 – present)
5. Company Description
You should describe your company and where it is based from in no more than one
sentence. This is because not everybody will know the companies you have worked for in
the past. If you write too much, the employer may not care and get bored. For example:
Nike is an international shoe and sportswear manufacturer based in the United States.
6. Your Job Responsibilities
Now is the time to list no more than three of your most important responsibilities in that job.
Remember to never say “I was responsible for…” and simply just begin your sentence
with “Responsible for…” and using the progressive tense (verbs ending in –ing). For
example, if your job was a teacher: Responsible for preparing lesson plans, evaluating
student performance, and doing informative seminars for large audiences.
Now it’s your turn – write about two of your work experiences. Start with your most recent.
If you have no work experience, create your own!
