Visited with Bud Wentz down at the 

Fay Ranch sale last month. You know 

Bud is the one that figured out why 

Brahmans have humps ... it is to keep 

them from laying flat on their backs so 

they won't get their udders and scrotums 

sunburnt. 

Bud and I have something in common 

now that he is writing a column for the 

Simmental Shield called "Bud's Brahmantal 

Bull. " His writing is always humorous 

and he generally pokes a little fun at 

someone. 

Anyway, he told me that he didn't 

realize that "us editors" had so much 

fun ... we can take a jab at anyone we 

want in our columns and don't have to 

worry too much about getting whipped. 

What I am leading up to is a couple 

of months back, I took a little jab at 

my friend, Warren Budd, over in Georgia 

and you all can quit worrying ... he is a 

good sport and we got us an understanding. 

By the way, don't underestimate the 

power of The Brahman Journal ... got 

me a letter from some Australian wanting 

one of those Zebu Journals. He said he 

read my comments about the photographer 

who took the cover photo and 

he wanted to get him some of those 

Mexican Zebus. I don't know how he 

figures to get them in the country. 

Had a friend at Dallas talk to me 

about the lack of uniformity in our 

Brahman show cattle. (He will probably 

want equal time next month). It 

seemed like he made sense, but then I got 

to thinking that maybe that "lack of 

uniformity " was the reason our cattle 

are so popular. We got big ones, little 

ones, all colors and any size of ear you 

could want. I don't know about you, 

but I like a little variety... the most 

boring thing in the world would be to 

be in the Angus business and know 

that every calf born was going to be 

black, that would take all the fun out 

of checking pastures.

1977 SALES Figures from Brahman sales at auction f or the f irst eight months 

SET STRONG of 1977 show a 9% increase in the average price over that of 1976. 

TREND THRU The number of head sold is also up for 1977 over the number sold 

FIRST 8 MOS during the same time span, January-August, for 1976. Last year 

ended with 2,596 Brahmans being sold at auction for a $1,408 average . Thus 

far in 1977 we have sold 2,109 Brahmans for a $1,528 average.

in the 1977 West Texas Fair Brahman 

show in Abilene on September 

17. The bull is owned by the Gulf+ 

Western_Americas Corporation of La 

Romana, Dominican Republic and 

competed along with 84 other Brahman 

cattle in the first ABBA approved 

show for the 1977-78 show 

season. 

Judge Charles Richardson went 

to Miss BBB 375, owned by the 

BBB Ranch of Chandler, Texas, for 

his grand champion and senior champion 

female. Richardson is from 

St. Gabriel, Louisiana. 

A partnership entry, Cherokee 

Prince 2/144, was named reserve 

champion and reserve senior champion 

bull, while SBR Esto Imper 

Ristan 402/4, owned by .. Sartwelle 

Brahman Ranch of Sealy, Texas, 

won reserve champion and reserve 

senior champion female honors. The 

bull is owned by Jorge Cordero of 

Guatemala and Cherokee Ranch of 

Cherokee, Texas.

Texas, was the junior champion bull 

and USSC's Philorex 16, owned by

This month's featured custom fitter is John Watson of Devine, Texas. 

An Interview with 

of Watson's 

"Our business is Brahmans", says 

John Watson. "We at Watson's Cattle 

Service are involved with all 

phases of the Brahman industry 

through breeding, through sales and 

through shows." 

John Watson gew up in Devine, 

Texas. He became interested in the 

cattle industry through working for 

his grandfather, who maintained 

several , head of registered cows. 

These cows later became the foundation 

for his own cow herd. In 

1958, upon graduating from Texas 

A & M University with a degree in 

Agricultural Education, Watson began 

teaching' a course in vocation 

agriculture at Devine High School. 

Later, he ventured into the retail 

store business. For two to three 

years during this time, Watson tried 

his hand at exhibiting his own cattle. 

In 1971, the Watson's sold their 

retail store business and began showing 

cattle for other people. Watson 

exhibited cattle for J. Carter Thomas, 

Glenn Keeney, a close friend; 

plus his own cattle wearing the L6 

brand. 

Since that time, the cattle numbers 

have increased, the fitting business 

has steadily grown and the 

Watson's schedule gets busier and 

busier. Watson spends a great deal 

of time visiting with breeders, selecting 

show and sale cattle and, as 

he puts it, "just promoting the 

Brahman business". He has served

on the American Brahman Breeders 

'Association Board of Directors for 

nine years and is presently serving 

as president of the Texas Brahman 

Breeders Association. 

What makes Watson's Cattle Service 

a successful and enterprising 

operation? According to John 

Watson, their success can be attributed 

to an enthusiastic, hard 

working, close knit family. John' 

and Lucille Watson have four sons,' 

Herbert, Warren, Wesley and Clint. 

Watson will also tell you that family 

involvement has been the most 

important ingredient in getting to 

the level of achievement that Watson's 

Cattle Service has now reached. 

1. Do you derive all your income 

from custom fitting? 

We feel that custom fitting by itself 

is not a very profitable way to 

make a living. It is certainly hard 

work with long hours. There is a 

pretty good investment involved in 

getting set up in a custom fitting 

operation. Custom fitting has helped 

us become known in the Brahman 

business. Fitting has helped us 

sell our own cattle and sell cattle on 

a commission basis. We are also involved 

in the sale management business. 

It takes a little bit of a lot of 

things to make it in this world today. 

We feel that we have provided 

a service that has benefited the 

breeders we have worked for. 

2. What has been the largest number 

of cattle you have handled? 

I guess the largest number of cattle 

we have handled was in 1975. 

In that year, we had 95 head in 

Houston. A highlight of the year 

was being selected to handle the 

special exhibit of cattle sent by the 

Mexico Association. 

3. What is the biggest problem in 

the custom fitting business, other 

than economic problems you are 

faced with? 

The biggest problem for a custom 

fitter, once he becomes established 

is that of labor. We have tried td 

use inexperienced labor and have 

found that idea just does not work. 

This labor pro blem can be attributed 

to the fact that you are gone from 

home most of the time during September, 

October, February and March. 

Being on the road a great deal 

makes it hard to keep good men, 

even at good salaries. Also, trying 

to find added, extra help needed 

during the show season, poses 

another problem. 

4. In the time you ,have been involved 

with Brahman cattl~ , what 

changes have you witnessed in the 

type and style of the Brahman? 

In the time I have been involved 

in custom fitting, Brahman cattle 

have been in constant demand. The 

interest in Brahmans has risen a

great deal. Brahman cattle have 

gone through some very noticeable 

changes, particularly in type. 

People today desire longer, trimmer 

cattle. Breeders are putting more 

height on their animals. These 

changes are good, as long as we do 

not forget reproduction, beef conformation 

and breed character. 

5. Are Brahman cattle more 

acceptable to cattlemen in your 

area than a few years ago? 

Brahman cattle have always been 

popular in my own area. I cannot 

say that I have seen much change in 

that. However, I can see where 

they have spread into new areas. 

6. You mentioned the spreading of 

the Brahman influence into new 

areas. What is the reason for this 

spread? 

Brahman blood has spread because 

of cross breeding programs. I 

think the commercial cow of the 

future is a 1/2 Brahman and a 1/2 

popular beef breed combination. 

Also, if it were not for fitters, 

many less Brahmans would have 

been shown. At cattle shows over 

the past five years, more Brahmans 

have been shown than any other 

breed. This increase in Brahman 

numbers is largely due to five or 

six custom fitters. The exhibiting 

of Brahman cattle along with the 

promotional work of the custom 

fitter, has played a very important 

role in making Brahmans as popular 

as they are now. 

7. · Why do so many breeders send 

cattle to custom fitters rather than 

handling the cattle themselves? 

Breeders just do not have the 

time, personnel or equipment to 

show their own cattle. It has to be 

number one in your daily schedule. 

Those show cattle have to be taken 

care of every day. Breeders simply 

cannot devote enough time to their 

show cattle, plus the time needed to 

look after and manage a cattle operation 

as well. 

8. To what do you attribute the 

popularity of the Brahman breed 

among cattlemen? 

Certainly I know if it were not 

for custom fitters many less Brahmans 

would have been shown. At 

almost all of the shows over the 

past five years there have been more 

Brahmans shown than any other 

breed. This fact is directly due to 

five or six custom fitters. I think 

the exhibition of Brahmans plus 

these fitters have played a very important 

role in making the Brahman 

breed as popular as it is today. 

9. What are your feelings concerning 

the future of the Brahman 

industry? 

The Brahman industry has more 

to offer the cattle industry than 

any other breed. We have not 

started to promote it to its fullest. 

In my opinion the possibilities for 

advancement are almost unlimited, 

if we will do the best job possible 

in breeding our cattle. The next 

step toward future growth is to get 

out and promote Brahman cattle. 

The sky is the limit if we are willing 

to work for it.

female. The Belton, Texas ranch

Texas for $620. Runnells-Pierce 

Ranch of Bay City, Texas took the 

high selling female, Lady Beauty, 

consigned by Maxwell Ranch, with 

a high bid of $860. 

Volume buyer for the sale was 

Roy A. Herrington of Palestine, 

Texas, who purchased 12 head for 

$3,840 to average $320.The average 

age of the female lots offered was 

10 years. 

Auctioneer Keith Babb sold the 

offering to buyers from Arkansas 

and Texas.

Averages $1,970 

The A Bar T Ranch Dispersal at 

La Vernia, Texas, on August 21 

saw 66 Red Brahmans sell for a 

$1,970 average and a $130,025 

gross. 

Red Man RJP 300 topped the 

sale at $23,500. He was purchased 

by Billa Real Brahman Ranch of 

Batesville, Texas. 

The sale ended with four herd 

bulls averaging $6,981; 10 yearling 

bulls averaging $540; 20 pair averaging 

$1,138; 17 bred females averaging 

$2,280; and 15 heifers averaging 

$2,343. 

These figures were released by 

the sale managers, Reyes Acutioneering 

and Sales Management Service 

of San Antonio, Texas. •

Arauto 31/5. He topped the 

bulls at $1,700 and was purchased 

by Lloyd Moreau of Pineville, Louisiana. 

Moreau also ended the day 

as volume buyer, purchasing 23 lots 

for a total $43,350.

test. It is expensive to get a 

cow in good breeding condition. 

Using an infertile bull on such a 

cow wastes calves, the cash crop of 

the cattle business. 

It is no secret that Brahman 

breeders would prefer a higher fertility 

rate in their cattle. Available 

data indicate that with sizable herds 

an 85 percent weaning rate is near 

the top. Comparative tests at various 

Experiment Stations have borne 

out this assertion. Brahmans have a 

reputation for being excellent mothers 

and putting a lot of their 

energy into milk production. It is 

known that many first calf heifers 

and some older animals will not 

cycle as long as they are nursing a 

calf. Often when her calf is weaned, 

the cow will be in heat within six 

days. Brahman cattle are more com-

petitive in conception rate during 

the prime of their breeding life but 

tend to become alternate year breeders 

in older age. 

As was brought out at a recent 

Brahman clinic, a high percentage of 

Brahman cattle in the United States 

trace back to a very few bulls from 

India. It is possible that the tendency 

for more difficult breeding 

traces to these animals. Crossbred 

Brahman cattle compare favorably 

to more fertile breeds. 

Zebu cattle in South America of 

the Nellore strain attain better than 

a 90 percent conception rate. This 

tends to enhance the theory that 

the trouble with Brahmans in the 

United States may be genetic. 

Some experiments in Florida and 

Louisiana that attempted to eliminate 

relative infertility by culling all 

open cows did not raise the weaning 

rate very much. In one experiment 

at the University of Florida 

conducted by Dr. Marvin Koger 

the weaning rate at the start was 

60 percent. By good nutrition and 

culling open cows he was able to 

raise it to only 70 to 75 percent. 

This is certainly a worthy improvement 

and may indicate that heredity 

is involved to some degree in 

infertility. 

Wiltbank and Spitzer at the Beeville, 

Texas, Experiment Station 

have shown that it is necessary to 

provide adequate energy in order to 

have cattle in good enough physical 

condition to come into heat. Further, 

they observed that weaning 

a calf from a nursing cow will aid in 

stimulating the onset of estrus. They 

also demonstrated that virgin heifers 

can be induced to cycle at the 

desired time if they are fed to l'.!.ttain 

the proper weight for age. In the 

case of Brahmans between 13 and 

16 months of age, 50 percent will 

come in heat at 700 pounds, 70 

percent at 750 pounds and 90+ 

percent at 800 pounds. 

It is very wise of Brahman breeders 

to face up to the fertility improvement 

problem and take steps 

to resolve it. Other breed associations 

have faced similar serious problems 

and improved or overcome 

them in due time.

National Sale 

Nominations for the 1978 National 

Brahman Sale will be accepted 

until November 15, 1977. 

The sale will be held in Tampa, 

Florida on February 4 at 2:00 

p.m. and is in conjunction with the 

1978 National Brahman Show and 

Annual Membership meeting. 

A $100 nominating fee must accompany 

nominations and a 10% 

sales commission (less the $100 

nominating fee) will be charged. The 

nomination fee for animals not accepted 

to sell will be returned. 

To be nominated animals should 

be of high quality and halter broken. 

Bulls should be between the 

ages of 20 and 36 months by sale 

date and must be fertility tested. 

Females should be between 12 and 

36 months of age at sale date and 

those over 28 months of age must 

be certified safe in calf or have a 

calf at side.

the chairman of the sifting committee.
