INTRODUCTION
Designed with today’s songwriter/lyricist in mind, the Rhyming
Dictionary is an efficient, concise, and user-friendly resource of some
30,000 words; a contemporary lexicon that encompasses standard vocabulary,
proper names (common, place, literary, mythological), popular
expressions, and for the sake of range and variety, some lesser-known
and esoteric terms. Rather than following the “common spelling” format
found in most rhyming dictionaries, the entries of this book have been
organized alpha-phonetically, to both maximize word choice and minimize
cross-referencing.
The alpha-phonetic structure, in which words are grouped according
to the vowel sound of their final (or only) syllable, allocates all
words that rhyme exactly—as well as those that rhyme closely—to the
same section. (See the “Pronunciation Guide” and “How to Use This
Book” on the following pages.) By segmenting all phonetically compatible
words together, rather than scattering them throughout the book
according to their common spelling, the user will not only be able to
readily locate a desired exact rhyme, but may peruse the consecutive
pages of phonetically attuned options for alternative word choices. And
because the inventive imagination of the present-day lyricist is seldom
devoted to, and often restricted by, the limitations inherent in exact
rhymes, the range of rhyming options provided in this book is sure to
stimulate and facilitate the creative process itself.
Intended to serve the specific needs of modern songwriter/lyricist,
the Rhyming Dictionary is also ideal for the writer, poet, or recreational
rhymester who seeks a convenient and comprehensive source of word
selection and poetic inspiration.
