WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU<br />

WANTED TO BE A MAKEUP ARTIST?<br />

I knew when I was about 21 working<br />

doing makeup for a retail store. I had<br />

too much fun and found myself loving<br />

being at work more than anything.<br />

WHAT’S WORKING AT NY FASHION<br />

WEEK LIKE?<br />

It’s like a holiday for me. I get really<br />

excited to see not only the designers’<br />

collections, but also the hair and<br />

makeup that debuts on the runway.<br />

Last season I collaborated with<br />

Nicholas K. We thought we were going<br />

to do a bold lip but ended up doing a<br />

flip on a classic look, smoking out the<br />

lower lash line and using lower lashes,<br />

too. Then I met with my team and they<br />

helped execute the look on all the<br />

models. It’s so fun to see imagination<br />

translated and executed.<br />

HOW DO YOU STAY ENERGIZED<br />

DURING A LONG MAKEUP DAY<br />

BACKSTAGE?<br />

I remember that I’m lucky to be doing<br />

what I love. I keep it fun. Water, coffee,<br />

water, coffee repeat.<br />

The best is that no two days are the<br />

same, and the worst is that I don’t<br />

have a consistent schedule.<br />

L A U R E N A N D E R S E N has just<br />

finished up NY Fashion Week, readying<br />

celebrities for talk show interviews,<br />

magazine photo shoots,<br />

and runway fashion shows. What do<br />

all her celebrity clients have in common?<br />

“They all take care of their<br />

skin,” says Andersen, “which makes<br />

a huge difference when I apply<br />

their makeup.”<br />

How can you take care of your skin<br />

so that makeup goes on perfectly and<br />

skin looks flawless? “What you do on<br />

the inside shows on the outside,” says<br />

Andersen. She is a huge advocate<br />

of eating well, exercising, and resting<br />

so that skin gets the nutrients and<br />

oxygen it needs as well as repair time<br />

while you sleep.<br />

And of course it’s crucial to take<br />

care of skin on the outside with<br />

a regimen that works for your skin<br />

type. “You have to know your own<br />

skin to understand what will work<br />

for it,” she says, adding that she has<br />

difficult combination skin and uses<br />

a gel cleanser to keep skin clear<br />

and a lightweight serum instead of<br />

moisturizer.<br />

Andersen says it’s essential to wash<br />

your face in the morning and evening,<br />

as pollution and dirt can clog pores,<br />

and then apply the moisturizer that’s<br />

right for you. Of course always remove<br />

makeup before bed. Night is the time<br />

to restore skin, so that’s when<br />

a treatment product works best.<br />

The texture of skin makes a big<br />

difference, too, Andersen says. To<br />

make sure the surface is even, some<br />

areas may need more moisture than<br />

others. She suggests exfoliating at<br />

least once a week to remove the top<br />

layer of dead skin cells and let your<br />

new skin shine through. This prevents<br />

dullness, as well as dry spots, which<br />

can “grab” makeup and create uneven<br />

foundation application.<br />

Andersen believes that your natural<br />

skin should show as much as<br />

possible, that’s why it’s so important<br />

to dote on it, whether you wear<br />

makeup or not. There are common<br />

mistakes that can lead to unevenness,<br />

brown spots or marks and they can<br />

be avoided. She notes that picking<br />

at a pimple can leave a scar, lack<br />

of sleep and stress may cause dull<br />

skin and dark circles, dehydration<br />

can lead to bumps on the forehead,<br />

and forgetting your sunscreen will<br />

eventually create sun damage, brown<br />

spots and wrinkles.<br />

As a celebrity makeup artist,<br />

Andersen has worked with some<br />

of the world’s most beautiful women.<br />

But “everyone is entitled to radiant<br />

skin,” she says.<br />

BIG & DARING MASCARA?<br />

We knew women loved volumizing mascaras,<br />

but didn’t like working too hard,<br />

using many strokes to get a volumized<br />

look. They also dislike clumping, flaking<br />

and getting their lashes stuck together.<br />

We found Big & Daring avoids these<br />

problems, it glides on smooth, flexible<br />

and wet.<br />

THAN WHAT WAS ALREADY ON<br />

Many mascaras are heavy and thick,<br />

and when applied with the wrong<br />

brush, they won’t create the right look.<br />

We offer a breakthrough formula and<br />

a curved wire brush that matches the<br />

shape of women’s lashes.<br />

WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES<br />

Finding the right brush and formula<br />

combination was challenging.<br />

We created a brush to more easily<br />

release the product onto the lashes.<br />

We needed the mascara to be thick<br />

enough to give volume, but also light<br />

and fluid. We learned of an ingredient<br />

used to give food wetness and fluffiness,<br />

and then found a cosmetic<br />

ingredient that creates the same<br />

effect in mascara. Big & Daring was born.<br />

Big & Daring. The test showed that<br />

consumers could see all of the<br />

It’s very simple: a lot of sleep (ten hours<br />

a day, at least), drink a lot of water<br />

and green tea, stay away from the sun,<br />

moisturizer, and just wake up happy.<br />
