Southside Boys Basketball Summer
League expands to two leagues
The Southside Boys Basketball Summer
League is a great opportunity for
children to play organized basketball over
the summer without joining a travel team.
A player can register online and be
placed on a team for the summer. Because
of popular demand, the league has
expanded to involve four grade levels
— grades six through nine — with two
leagues. The sixth- and seventh-graders
will play in one league, and the eighthand
ninth-graders will play in another.
In past years, teams have consisted of
players from Tinley Park, Orland Hills,
Oak Forest, Frankfort, Mokena, Lemont
and Orland Park. Former high school and
college basketball players volunteer and
are assigned a team to coach for the duration
of the league. The games are officiated
with two 20-minute halves to ensure
optimal playing time for all players. The
host site for all games will be at Andrew
High School in Tinley Park.
Registration for the league, as well as
any other summer camps hosted at Andrew,
can be completed online at www.
22ND CENTURY MEDIA | MAY 19, 2016 | 5
St. Mary Catholic School in Mokena
offers new tuition transfer grant for students
United States Sen. David Vitter
said, “Catholic schools prepare every
student to meet the challenges
of their future by developing their
mind, yes, but also their body and
their soul and spirit.” The mission
of St. Mary Catholic School in
Mokena is to help each child grow
to their greatest potential, both
spiritually and academically.
For the first time, St. Mary
Catholic School is offering a special
tuition transfer grant for up to
$1,500 per family ($1,000 in year
one, $500 in year two) for firstthrough
seventh-graders who
transfer from any private, public,
charter or home school. Students
transferring from another Catholic
school in the Diocese of Joliet
are not eligible.
St. Mary Catholic School is
a vibrant, warm and welcoming
Catholic school serving students
in prekindergarten through
eighth-grade. Since it opened
in 1949, the school’s size has
grown to now accommodate two
classes per grade and features a
music room, art room, library,
computer lab, science lab, 19
classrooms, cafeteria and a spacious
gymnasium.
“Our ministry is to help students
recognize, foster and exhibit
their role in carrying out
our Catholic values and traditions,”
said Principal Beth Cunningham.
“We do this through
infusing our beliefs throughout
our curriculum and by celebrating
our faith when we come together
at weekly school masses
and faith families. We work hard
to provide a faith-based environment
nurturing children with the
same values at home. St. Mary
School is not just a student’s academic
world. It becomes their
second home — their family.”
As a result of this infusion,
St. Mary’s families believe their
children are receiving an incomparable
education.
“My wife and I believe that
when we bring a child into this
world, we have an obligation to
ensure that they receive the education,
love and support necessary
to be successful in a challenging
world,” said Tim Taylor,
St. Mary’s parent and Mokena
resident. “Since our son was a
kindergartner, the teachers at the
school gave him the individual
attention, the academic challenge
and the faith-based culture
that we believe are critically important
to his development. We
could not be more thrilled with
the wonderful young man our
son has become and our decision
to send him to St. Mary School
in Mokena.”
The faculty of St. Mary Catholic
School provides an exceptional
learning environment that allows
students to achieve their full potential.
St. Mary students continue
to perform above the national average
at all grade levels in all tested
content areas year after year.
The one-to-one technology initiative
provides individual iPads
to sixth- through eighth-graders,
a class set of iPads to fourththrough
fifth-graders and kindergartners
through third-graders
have designated classroom iPads
and SmartBoards for educational
use. Primary students also benefit
from a certified reading specialist
and dedicated teacher aides. St.
Mary School offers a band program,
extracurricular clubs, social
events and an athletic program,
including cheerleading, basketball
and volleyball.
Bus service is available for
those families who reside in the
Mokena Public School District
159 for a fee.
And for those who
Gym-Kinetics leads the way in
recreational, competitive gymnastics
Gym-Kinetics Gymnastic School in
Mokena celebrated its 30-year anniversary
this past October.
The South Side gymnastic school started
in October 1985 and continues to be a
leader in both recreational and competitive
gymnastics.
Gym-Kinetics offers recreational gymnastics
classes starting as young as walkers.
The Mom & Tot classes are coordination-based
with a hint of gymnastics
mixed into the program. When students
are 3 years old, programs are offered
without parents’ involvement. There is
a class offered specifically for 3-yearolds
and separate classes are offered for
4-year-olds.
Once a student turns 5, the Mokena
gym offers beginning gymnastics classes
for both girls and boys. Gym-Kinetics is
one of the few gymnastic schools left in
the state that still offers a separate boys
program.
Programs are available for recreational
and competitive gymnastics for both boys
and girls.
The gymnastic school also offers tumbling
classes geared toward cheerleading
and a new program for young boys, Ninja
Zone. Ninja Zone has received great reviews
from its current participants. This
class combines gymnastics, military-style
obstacle courses, ninja-like maneuvers for
a fun, challenging class. The competitive
programs have had great success over the
years with hundreds of state, regional and
national champions.
This year is no exception, with 25
state champions throughout the various
competitive levels. If it is recreational or
competitive gymnastics that residents are
looking for, Gym-Kinetics is the place to
be.
Providence Catholic students
raise the bar of excellence
Providence Catholic High School students
have set the bar for achievement in
academics, athletics and acts of service.
Accomplishments in each of these areas
have kept the entire school community
buzzing with activity and excitement.
Members of the Class of 2016 have
been outstanding role models to the
younger students and committed to excellence
in the classroom. These students
excelled as evidenced by their 24.3 ACT
average. Forty-three members of the seniors
were named Illinois State Scholars.
Colin Brankin, ’16, of Orland Park,
was named a National Merit Finalist and
Patrick Connelly, ’16, of Tinley Park,
was named a Commended Student. These
prestigious honors are bestowed upon the
best and brightest students in the country.
This year, Celtic athletes brought home
three more state trophies to date. The
cheerleading and hockey teams placed
second, and the wrestling team placed
fourth in the state. In addition, the hockey
team won the CCL Kennedy Cup. Collectively,
the Celtics have earned 29 state titles,
which is more than any other private
or parochial school in Illinois. Through it
all, the student-athletes demonstrate good
sportsmanship, fair play and hard work,
which are the true measurements of success
in or out of the athletic arena.
Underlying every academic and athletic
achievement at PCHS is the Catholic faith
— the cornerstone of everything that takes
place at the school. Students live out their
faith in part by serving others and, in the
process, learn that “service is not an obligation,
but a valued choice,” as stated by
a recent graduate. Collectively, students
completed more than 100,000 hours of
service to the school, the church and local
Providing financial assistance to families
continues to be a top priority for the school.
PCHS works diligently with families to help
make a private, Catholic education possible.
Last year, $1.5 million was awarded to families
in need-based scholarships and grants,
work programs and discounts. These grants
and gifts are funded by Providence Catholic,
the Catholic Education Foundation and
many generous benefactors who believe in
funding Catholic education. Because of the
generosity of these benefactors, Providence
Catholic has been able to provide a top quality,
faith-based education to young people
for 97 years.
Providence Catholic will host a variety
of youth summer camps beginning early
June. Participants will have the opportunity
to learn something new, enhance
their knowledge and skills, and practice
the concepts of good sportsmanship and
PET-PALOOZA RULES
• All participating pets should have upto-date
vaccinations.
• Owners are responsible for cleaning
up after their pets.
• All pets must be on leashes of 6 feet
long or less.
• Costumes for pets and their owners
• All animals must wear proper tags.
The Orland Township Board of Trustees
and Supervisor Paul O’Grady are excited
to kick off Orland Township’s fifth
annual Pet-Palooza to benefit the Orland
Township Pet Pantry.
Township residents are invited to attend
with their four-legged friends from noon-
3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Orland
Township administration building, 14807
S. Ravinia Ave. in Orland Park, rain or
shine.
Furry companions from local animal
shelters who are in need of finding their
“furever homes” will be present, as well
as representatives from various animal
rescue groups. Water stations and shading
areas will be available for all animals,
as well as pools where pets can get their
paws wet.
A variety of exhibitors and food vendors
are to provide live entertainment
and treats for both humans and pets at the
extravaganza. The Kids’ Zone is to boast
a variety of games, raffles and prizes, as
well as trackless train rides, face painting,
clowns, a stilt walker and magic shows.
Chicago Blackhawks mascot Tommy
Hawk will be making a special appearance
that day and costumed princesses
and superheroes will be available for pictures,
autographs and more. Children can
also jump around in the “Doc McStuffins”
Moon Bounce or tackle the extreme obstacle
course.
Professional dog trainers will be on
hand to demonstrate ideal dog behavior,
and ribbons will be awarded for various
games and contests.
All proceeds will benefit the pet pantry,
which provides food and supplies for pets
and families in need.Non-pet owners can
still attend Pet-Palooza and experience a
day of wholesome family entertainment
while supporting a great cause.
“Orland Township’s Pet Pantry relies
solely on donations from the community,”
O’Grady said. “Pet-Palooza is a great
way to raise awareness about the pet pantry
and encourage community members
to contribute to keep its shelves full year
round.”
Attendees may not come with a pet,
but they could leave with a pal of their
own. Just ask Laurie Callahan, who adopted
Bella at the inaugural Pet-Palooza
and now can’t imagine a day without her.
General admission to the event is free,
but a donation of one 5-pound bag of pet
food or a cash donation to the Orland
Township Pet Pantry is strongly encouraged.
Saunoris’ serves gardening needs
Saunoris’ Garden Center
has been serving the community’s
growing needs
for more than 60 years.
Jim and Sophie Saunoris
opened a small flower
shop in 1941 that was located
in Chicago Ridge on
the corner of 111th Street
and Austin Avenue. The
two worked the business
with the help of their three
sons: Jim, Lester and Ron
Saunoris.
Originally, the business
was dedicated to serving
visitors to the large local
cemeteries with flowers
and other grave decorations.
This small flower
shop became successful
and soon evolved into a
full-service garden center.
In 1961, it expanded its
product selection to include
all aspects of lawn
and garden care.
At this point, the business
also added more
greenhouse area to control
the quality of their plants.
Because of the success of
the first location, a larger
facility was constructed in
1971 at 196th Street and
Harlem Avenue, which is
now considered Frankfort.
This expansion allowed
the center to serve a broader
range of customers’
gardening needs by the addition
of a stone yard and
nursery.
Saunoris’ Garden Center
is a family-owned and
operated business, which
is currently in the family’s
fourth generation, including
grandsons and great-grandsons
working between the
two establishments.
Saunoris’ is committed
to bringing quality and
excellent service to its customers
as it has for the past
60 years.
Since opening more than a year and a
half ago, Just Shrimp has added multiple
items to its menu. Its newest addition to
its sandwich selection includes a gator po’
boy. The alligator is lightly breaded and
deep fried to perfection. Just like other
po’ boys on the menu, the gator po’ boy
is served on toasted french bread and
dressed with lettuce, tomato, and po’ boy
sauce. The sandwich is served as a meal
with french fries and homemade coleslaw
for $12.99.
Customers can enjoy a wide variety
of seafood that is wild-caught and made
to order. The restaurant aims to provide
fresh, high-quality food at a reasonable
price point. Just Shrimp serves only the
freshest seafood — shrimp, catfish and
other wild-caught products arrive daily —
coated in a light, crispy batter and served
with a generous amount of fries and coleslaw.
Although most menu items are fried,
Just Shrimp also offers a few non-fried
options for those looking for something
different. The customer favorites, lobster
roll and shrimp roll sandwiches are among
the non-fried menu items. The lobster roll
is made the traditional New England way,
with whole Maine boiled lobster, mayonnaise,
chopped celery, lemon juice and
house seasoning. It is served cold on a
lightly toasted and buttered New England
roll. The shrimp roll is made by boiling
shrimp and then mixing it with a homemade
lime tarragon mayonnaise sauce,
also served on a lightly toasted, buttered
New England roll.
While whole lobsters are boiled daily to
prepare the customer favorite lobster roll,
a perfect base for soup also is created. By
simply adding a touch of heavy cream
and light tomato, an unforgettable bisque
is created that perfectly complements any
meal.
Just Shrimp has found a unique niche,
which has allowed the business to expand
rapidly. With the opening of its third location
in Ford City Mall’s food court, Just
Shrimp has become a seafood enthusiast’s
nirvana.
With a variety of dipping sauces, customers
have the ability to customize their
order by adding their personal sauce preference.
Among the seven mouth-watering
sauces offered, the customer favorite is
Just Shrimp’s signature homemade spicy
sauce. Other sauces include traditional
cocktail, buffalo, mild, tartar, barbecue
and hot.
Shrimp packs, as well as other meals,
are served with a generous side of fries
and fresh coleslaw. Customers who wish
to skip the fries have the option of upgrading
to another side for an additional
$1.20. These substitutions include fried
zucchini, mushrooms, onion rings, mozzarella
sticks and okra. Most meals on the
menu also can be purchased as a sandwich,
served on a toasted french roll, with
lettuce, tomato and a perfectly paired
sauce.
Whether looking for a quick bite to eat,
or an entire seafood dining experience,
Just Shrimp is there to accommodate.
With quick service, reasonable prices and
a small dining area, Just Shrimp fills the
void of the forgotten local shrimp house.
