Downtown Wilmette offers local
shopping options for holidays
Have you been to downtown Wilmette
lately? If your answer is no,
you are in for some surprises—the
Village has experienced a dramatic
renaissance as of late. That’s right
- new restaurants, boutiques and
services have emerged amongst
the longtime family- owned greats
making it easy and fun to shop locally
this holiday season.
There are so many reasons to
skip the mall (besides the parking
lot altercations and the bad music).
In this day and age of online
shopping and mass production, it’s
more important than ever to feel
part of and invested in our community.
Just ask the local business
owners who live, shop and play
here every day.
So here’s how to check things
off your gift list and not even leave
town…How about starting with
one of Wilmette’s new retailers?
Stop at Exhibit for unique gifts and
apparel from vintage cocktail sets
to new leather jackets. Are clothing
and accessories on your list? Head
to Hubba-Hubba for classic, trendsetting
and affordable fashion and
Persimmon for merchandise from
Paris to Istanbul. Pop by Chantilly
Lace to see their fresh new look -
same spot, new owner.
’Tis the season for hostess gifts
so explore the many wonderful
choices at Raven and Dove, grab a
bottle of goodness from The Bottle
Shop or flowers from Morning
Glory Flower Shop. If jewelry is
on your gift list make sure to visit
both Lambrecht and Wilmette Jewelers
for some beautiful baubles.
And of course make sure to stop
in Lad and Lassie, a long-time favorite
with kids and adults alike
for clothing and gifts. Want to see
it all in style? Stop by Craig Scott
Opticians.
What’s also great about downtown
Wilmette is that you can make
a night (or day) out of it. Come enjoy
great dining and entertainment
choices like Depot Nuevo, Nicks,
The Big Tomato and Rock House.
And why not get spruced up at
Rolf’s Salon before heading out on
the town?
Village Toy Shop remains treasured part of Winnetka community
The Village Toy Shop has been
a community landmark and an important
part of Winnetka for over 65
years.
Located in the heart of downtown,
it is a place filled to the roof
with wonderful toys just waiting to
become a child’s beloved treasure.
The cozy and inviting front window
is jam-packed with wonderful
things to choose from. One glance
at the store and you want to come
in and have a look around. You can
find a huge variety of playthings
there, everything from toys invented
last year to the classics which
have been around for decades.
There are new toys that the kids
are all talking about, and toys
which have withstood the test of
time. The store has Legos, puzzles,
dolls, science kits, and stuffed animals.
They even have a section of
classic candy that will remind you
of your childhood.
For the past 30 years, the Berwanger
family has owned and lovingly
run the store. On any day,
you can find the mother-daughter
team of Pat and Liz Berwanger
behind the counter offering their
knowledge and advice to their
extremely loyal customers. The
customers walking out with bags
brimming full of beautifully
wrapped toys seem almost as excited
and enthusiastic about the
store as the staff.
When customers walk in the
door they are cheerfully greeted
as old friends, and they know
that they will find just what they
need. Along with their fantastic
and dedicated staff, Pat and Liz
can help you find the perfect gift
for all the kids on your list. The
Toy Shop team members listen
to find out exactly what the child
likes, and then they help you find
just the appropriate thing for
that child. They especially love
the challenge of trying to find
something for the child who has
everything already. They even offer
free gift wrapping and local
delivery.
One of their signature services
is to put a free little toy on top of
every gift that they wrap. This is
the place that kids run to when they
have allowance money to spend,
and where new grandparents come
because it was where they shopped
when they were kids. Many of
the customers can tell you stories
about how many years they have
been happily shopping at the store.
The Village Toy Shop continues
to be a treasured part of a community
that clearly loves the place.
John Plunkett Interiors: Why high point fashion matters to you
You live here on the North
Shore so it’s likely you have
fashionable taste and care a
great deal about the look and
feel of your home, especially
now as we approach the holidays
and welcome guests
into our homes. Assuming
that, you may enjoy hearing
the latest from a small place
on earth called High Point,
North Carolina. No, this is
not where Santa relaxes after
completing his seasonal
chores, but it does have
significance. It is the world
epicenter of the interior design
and home furnishings
industry, which strongly influences
the interior fashions
we choose for our homes.
If you were to visit this
small Southern metropolis
almost any time of the year,
you’d think you stepped into
a time capsule from 50 to 75
years ago. It’s quiet, folksy,
and let’s just say, “quaint,”
but during the third week of
April or October each year,
High Point plays host to the
International Home Furnishings
Market. Overnight
the population bursts by
100,000 attendees from the
city’s regular 108,000 residents.
This is when furniture
retailers and interior design
fashionistas from around the
globe flock to see manufacturers’
newest collections
and design statements. It is
all wonderfully conceived
and orchestrated by some of
the best furniture and interior
design talent in the world.
John Plunkett Interiors,
located in Plaza del Lago in
Wilmette, just returned from
the Market. With millions of
square feet of manufacturer
showroom display space to
cover, you could spend two
weeks and not see it all. In
their briefer than normal
four-day whirlwind tour,
here is what John Plunkett
Interiors saw:
Style Trends – As varied
as tastes are in the general
population – from ornate
traditional to clean contemporary
designs, and from
relaxed and casual to more
formal looks – so, too, are
the variations in furniture
and interior design. Suffice
it to say you see it all.
One of the significant style
trends in recent years is what
you might call the restoration
hardware look. Characterized
by large scale furniture
pieces in rustic gray
tone wood finishes, along
with extra deep (sometimes
too deep to be comfortable)
upholstery, this look has
gained appeal. It definitely
is not your parents’ furniture.
Yet some question how
much life remains in this
style category. Regardless,
many furniture manufacturers
from low-to-higher-end
reflect this look in their new
introductions.
Another trend that continues
strongly from recent
years is the movement away
from traditional and toward
more contemporary and
modern design, including
mid-century modern. This
reflects many of our preferences
for furniture styles other
than those our parents had.
Manufacturers have their
fingers on this pulse. We saw
many tasteful new contemporary
collections. To name
a few, Marge Carson debuted
a gorgeous grouping called
Lake Shore Drive. Precedent
and Thayer Coggin continue
to be prolific with classic
contemporary and modern
upholstery design.
Finally, and probably most
relevant for many North
Shore residents, is furniture
and interior design reflecting
an eclectic blend of contemporary
and cleaned-up classical
traditional forms. Hickory
Chair, Century, and a newer,
trending line called Caracole
have been driving forces in
this direction. It is a curated
blend of styles that is not easy
to create at home, even by
practiced professionals.
These brief reflections
hardly begin to convey the
scope of the High Point Market
or its wealth of interior
design and home furnishing
resources. It is both inspiring
and awesome. And because it
is open only to the trade, we
consider it our professional
responsibility and pleasure
to bring this world back to
you. We at John Plunkett
Interiors know you want a
room and a home that is both
comfortable and attractive.
We have been attending the
Market twice yearly for the
last 40-plus years, and shopping
it extensively on behalf
of our client’s preferences
and needs. So when you are
looking for that perfect piece
or want to create an award
winning room, we can offer
you the nicest of options.
Winnetka Community House to feature Kohl Children’s Museum
This November, Winnetka
Community House welcomes
the Kohl Children’s
Museum’s interactive traveling
exhibit, Chagall for Children.
With 14 multi-sensory
stations, each incorporating
a high-quality reproduction
of Chagall’s most famous
works, the exhibit offers
hands-on exploration of one
of the most beloved artists of
the twentieth century, Marc
Chagall.
“We are extremely excited
to bring such an important
exhibit to the North Shore,”
said Alana Flatley, Winnetka
Community House’s Director
of Institutional Advancement.
“We are honored that
Kohl Children’s Museum
chose Winnetka Community
House to host this worldclass
display of Chagall’s
most recognizable works.”
The series of hands-on
activities encourages visiting
children, ages 2-12, and
their families, to explore and
work with specific art principles
such as color, composition,
light and texture.
The Winnetka Community
House will feature the
Kohl Children’s Museum’s
interactive traveling exhibit,
Chagall for Children, this
winter.
All proceeds from the
Chagall for Children
exhibit support the youth
enrichment programs
and services of Winnetka
Community House.
Photos submitted
Many stations are accompanied
with audio descriptions,
highlighting information
about the artwork upon
which the interactive experience
is based.
Chagall for Children
opens on Tuesday, Nov. 24,
and continues through Friday,
Dec. 31. Hours are from
9 a.m.-3 p.m. every day.
School groups are invited to
attend at no charge. There is
a suggested donation of $10
for families who wish to visit
the exhibit.
“I’ve seen the incredible
success of this traveling exhibit
and I have no doubt that
our community will embrace
it as well,” Flatley said. “We
can hardly wait to open our
doors and share the wonderful
gift of Chagall this holiday
season. The collaboration
with Kohl Children’s
Museum has meant a great
deal to us, and we are very
grateful for their willingness
to share the exhibit with the
Community House.”
To celebrate this wonderful
achievement for Winnetka
Community House several
events have been created
and are open to the public,
including a VIP Preview
Londo Mondo
is a one-stop-shop
in Winnetka
In February of 2015, Londo Mondo
made its maiden voyage to the suburbs and
opened our doors in Winnetka. The concept
of this store is much like her downtown
sister, who has been opened for 27 years.
There is an eclectic yet fluid mix of contemporary
women’s clothing, handmade
jewelry, shoes and accessories, as well as
swim and resort-wear carried year-round.
Due to Londo Mondo’s success in the
North Shore, the business is expanding in
to the space next door to add more athletic
clothing (athleisure) that can also be worn
throughout the day.
Londo Mondo can be truly described as
a one-stop-shop; one shopping experience
can take you from the gym, to lunch to date
night. Londo also boasts superior product
knowledge and fantastic customer service
by staffing employees who take time to get
to know customer’s individual needs.
Whether your sunshine bound, headed to
exercise class, lunching with the ladies, or
out for a date night, Londo Mondo has you
covered.
La Relance Salon covers all of your hair needs
Amanda Iqbal, co-owner
of La Relance Salon in
Glencoe, said, “In the beauty
industry, it’s not about the
glitz of the salon, it’s about
the work the staff produces
in it.”
This year, Iqbal celebrates
32 years in the industry. She
and her husband, Matty, celebrate
their fifth year in the
661 Vernon location and 17
years in Glencoe.
“I can only hope to lead
my staff to enjoy their career
as much as I have
mine,” Iqbal said.
She chose a small boutique
setting to encourage
her theory that in a large
salon, maybe 10 of the 30
stylists are worthy of a client’s
trust. In a small setting
of seven stylists, all will be
capable of working with
your hair because no one
gets lost in the salons education
program.
“We do “one-on-one”
hands-on training. With myself
and Michael, the staff
can’t help but move forward
in their career,” Iqbal said.
Michael Apodaca is a
master stylist and colorist
at the salon and is the director
of education. When
asked about color trends he
stressed, ”Trends come and
go, but it looks like gradient
hair is here to stay. Over
the past few seasons, we’ve
transistioned from foil highlights
and solid all-over
colour to softer and more
natural looking colour. Today,
the look is sun-kissed,
grown out and slightly unkempt.
The slow-fade styles
add depth, dimension and
you don’t have to be visiting
the salon every few
weeks for a touch-up.”
Despite the styles popularity,
clients are still tripping
over the names. Ombré?
Sombré? Balayage?
Babylights? What’s the
difference? Tori Cohen, La
Relance’s advanced level 3
stylist explained, “They’re
all highlighting techniques,
but each create subtle differences.
With traditional
foils, the highlights are uniform
and defined. Balayage,
taken from the French
word meaning “to sweep,”
is a freehand technique in
which specific woven hair
is sectioned and hand painted
with a lightening agent.
After painting, each swatch
is covered in cellophane.
Balayage highlights are less
systematically placed, you
“I can only hope to lead my staff
to enjoy their career as much as I
have mine.”
Amanda Iqbal, co-owner of La Relance Salon in
Glencoe.
end up with less symmetrical,
more random highlights,
resulting in a more
casual, beachy finish.”
Raquel Devience, an advanced
level two stylist.
said, “Unlike ombré, which
worked best for brunettes
in the past, balayage works
for everyone. You can
balayage a short pixie crop,
but for best results, we
work it on hair that sits below
the shoulders. Balayage
is a great option if you
like the look of highlights
with more contrast and less
blonde.”
“Ombré can be a stark
dark-to-light fade,” said
Ashley Ilg, an advanced
stylist, “Making sombré
a much more subtle take
on the dip-dye trend. With
sombré, the lighter sections
start up a bit higher and the
lower lengths have ribbons
of dark colour for a more
gradual transition. The
worn-in look is a perfect
choice for low-maintenance
color. There is no need for
constant touch-ups due to
there being no clear demarcation
line or regrowth
– making it an economical
option, too.”
La Relance offers the
iconic smoothing and repairing
brand recognized
by it’s name, Brazilian
Blowout. It is the most imitated
smoothing brand on
the market, so be aware of
the imitators. If you book
an appointment anywhere
other than La Relance Salon
there are a few things
to consider ensuring you’re
receiving the one and only
original Brazilian Blowout.
Only certified stylists
should perform the professional
smoothing treatment.
Ask for this certification
and to see the original product
in its iconic bronze bottle
clearly marked with the
Brazilian Blowout logo.
La Relance Salon requires
all of their stylists to
be certified in order to perform
the Brazilian Blowout
Smoothing and Repairing
Treatments properly and
to manufacturers requirements.
The Brazilian Blowout
professional Split End and
Damaged Hair Corrector is
a therapeutic and preventative
treatment and cutting
lotion all in one. Utilizing
a proprietary Thermo-Marine
Bonding System, this
treatment fills in and binds
broken hair fibers together,
instantly mending split
ends and compromised
hair while a Brazilian Super
Nutrient Complex prevents
future breakage by
surrounding each strand
with a protective coating,
defending against daily
styling and environmental
stressors.
“It’s the only in-salon
service that instantly mends
and prevents split ends
while also preventing future
splits to occur,” said
Jamie Kaley, salon stylist.
“It lasts up to four weeks. It
is perfect for prolonging the
shape of your precision cut.
The end result is instantly
repaired, stronger, healthier
ends protected against future
breakage.”
Iqbal is thankful for the
clients that have supported
her through her career.
“My clients have seen
me through many changes
over the years and they
have chosen to support my
talents and my dreams. You
can’t even imagine how that
feels. The service industry
is tough, and I listen to people
all day judging other local
businesses. You have to
learn that it is not about you,
but that it is all about your
staff, the community, and
your service,” Iqbal said. “I
grow, get involved, educate,
and keep the passion. Mostly,
I have created a space
that I would go to as a client,
the “Cheers” of salons.
You will get a hello from all
of us when you walk in the
door.”
Five Seasons Family Sports Club focuses on greater health
Since its inception 15 years ago,
Five Seasons Family Sports Club
in Northbrook has evolved— and
that is reflected in something as
fundamental as its name.
Named Five Seasons Country
Club when it first opened, the club,
located at 1300 Techny Road, later
replaced “Country” with “Sports”
while investing in an overhaul of
the facility toward a greater health
and wellness focus.
That transformation in 2007 included
an extensive investment in
the club’s fitness area, and a renewed
emphasis on growing one of
the region’s strongest junior tennis
programs. Shortly thereafter, the
club added “Family” to its name in
reference to Five Seasons’ passion
for serving people in all phases of
life.
And now, with a new one-rate
membership format, the club is applying
an exclamation point to its
long-term commitment to the community
this holiday season.
At the “new” Five Seasons, you
can join for as low as $99 for an
individual and a family will save
more than $1,500 annually compared
with the club’s prior rate
structure. In some cases, members
will be able to upgrade to a family
membership for less than the cost
of what has been the couple rate.
“It has been a wonderful first 15
years, and we look forward to our
next 15 in the community,” said
Lina Lubbat, chief club officer.
Among other initiatives, the club
is investing $150,000 into new fitness
equipment. Also, with the new
one-rate membership, members
will enjoy full access to the club’s
premier tennis program.
Five Seasons has helped produce
a steady stream of high school
state tennis champions, nationally
ranked players and athletes who
have gone on to play collegiate
tennis. Nearly three years ago, it
became one of the only USTA Certified
Regional Training Centers in
the Midwest.
And its offerings in that arena go
well beyond junior instruction and
development.
“Tennis is a fantastic way to
get and stay in shape, meet new
people, spend time with family
and friends, or get those competitive
juices flowing,” said Thomas
Deere, Five Seasons chief operating
officer. “This lifetime sport is
for everyone and our new membership
program provides more opportunity
for members than ever
before.”
Five Seasons Family Sports
Club is the premier year-round
high-energy, high-touch sports
club focused on family leisure and
entertainment, improving sports
performance and maintaining overall
health.
