Five Seasons Family Sports Club focuses on greater health 

Since its inception 15 years 

ago, Five Seasons Family 

Sports Club in Northbrook 

has evolved— and that is 

reflected in something as 

fundamental as its name. 

Named Five Seasons 

Country Club when it first 

opened, the club, located 

at 1300 Techny Road, later 

replaced “Country” with 

“Sports” while investing in 

an overhaul of the facility 

toward a greater health and 

wellness focus. 

That transformation in 

2007 included an extensive 

investment in the club’s fitness 

area, and a renewed 

emphasis on growing one of 

the region’s strongest junior 

tennis programs. Shortly 

thereafter, the club added 

“Family” to its name in reference 

to Five Seasons’ passion 

for serving people in 

all phases of life. 

And now, with a new 

one-rate membership format, 

the club is applying 

an exclamation point to its 

long-term commitment to 

the community this holiday 

season. 

At the “new” Five Seasons, 

you can join for as 

low as $99 for an individual 

and a family will save 

more than $1,500 annually 

compared with the club’s 

prior rate structure. In some 

cases, members will be able 

to upgrade to a family membership

Amanda Iqbal, co-owner 

of La Relance Salon in 

Glencoe, said, “In the beauty 

industry, it’s not about the 

glitz of the salon, it’s about 

the work the staff produces 

in it.” 

This year, Iqbal celebrates 

32 years in the industry. She 

and her husband, Matty, celebrate 

their fifth year in the 

661 Vernon location and 17 

years in Glencoe. 

“I can only hope to lead 

my staff to enjoy their career 

as much as I have mine,” 

Iqbal said. 

She chose a small boutique 

setting to encourage 

her theory that in a large salon, 

maybe 10 of the 30 stylists 

are worthy of a client’s 

trust. In a small setting of 

seven stylists, all will be capable 

of working with your 

hair because no one gets lost 

in the salon’s education program. 

“We do ‘one-on-one’ 

hands-on training. With myself 

and Michael, the staff 

can’t help but move forward 

in their career,” Iqbal said. 

Michael Apodaca is a 

master stylist and colorist 

at the salon and is the director 

of education. When 

asked about color trends he 

stressed, “Trends come and 

go, but it looks like gradient 

hair is here to stay. Over 

the past few seasons, we’ve 

transistioned from foil highlights 

and solid all-over 

colour to softer and more 

natural looking colour. Today, 

the look is sun-kissed, 

grown out and slightly unkempt. 

The slow-fade styles 

add depth, dimension and 

you don’t have to be visiting 

the salon every few weeks 

for a touch-up.” 

Iqbal is thankful for the 

clients that have supported 

her through her career. 

“My clients have seen me 

through many changes over 

the years and they have chosen 

to support my talents 

and my dreams. You can’t 

even imagine how that feels. 

You have to learn that it is 

not about you, but that it is 

all about your staff, the community, 

and your service,” 

Iqbal said. 

“I grow, get involved, educate, 

and keep the passion. 

Mostly, I have created a 

space that I would go to as a 

client, the ‘Cheers’ of salons. 

You will get a hello from all 

of us when you walk in the 

door.”

YMCA prepares for annual 

Christmas tree fundraiser 

With the holiday season 

rapidly approaching, the 

North Suburban YMCA will 

once again offer beautiful 

Christmas trees for sale to 

benefit local families. Beginning 

Nov. 27, top-quality 

trees in a range of sizes and 

prices will be available on 

the YMCA’s lawn, located at 

2705 Techny Road in Northbrook. 

The sale is expected 

to run until Dec. 21, or while 

supplies last. Proceeds will 

benefit the Y’s Annual Family 

Appeal, providing financial 

assistance for families in 

need to participate in YMCA 

programs. 

The Annual Family Appeal 

supports financial assistance 

programs that help 

more than 2,500 individuals 

each year, reducing or 

eliminating costs of classes, 

camps, afterschool care and 

other Y benefits for families 

in financial difficulties. 

One out of five Y participants 

receive some level of 

assistance from the Y. 

“The YMCA Christmas 

Tree Sale is a great new 

tradition that makes a tangible 

difference in the lives
