June 7th and offer a variety of
management and etiquette.
The Golf Practice teaches fundamentals
The Golf Practice is a golf
teaching academy located in
Highland Park. It offers an
array of junior programs at
its year-round indoor facility
and at outdoor camps in
Highland Park, Kenilworth
and Evanston (Canal
shores). TGP takes what it
knows about hitting a golf
ball, developing skills and
having fun to create learning
aids, training protocols and
facility concepts that transform
the experience of learning
and playing the game.
TGP helps students understand
how to properly
measure their experiences,
cultivate awareness and illuminate
the process of learning.
TGP’s teaching is more
than a couple of quick tips
and more an invitation to develop
skillfulness; to work
toward something and to go
down a path of mastery.
Half Day
Program
Highlights:
Begin the
week of June
7th
8:45am to 12:15pm
Tuesday through Friday
Fee $395 for one week,
$25 off for each subsequent
week
Five FREE rounds of golf
for each participant. ($110
value)
TGP believes a successful
junior program has to be
fast-paced, challenging and
offer recognition. However,
the golf club as a tool is not
easy for many people to understand
right away. TGP
breaks complex skills down
into bite-sized chunks and
creates games that bridge
the gap between other athletic
endeavors. The studentto-teacher
ratio is 4:1 so as
to ensure that every player
feels a connection with the
teacher and the material.
Before children have matured
to the stage of their
mental development where
goals and deliberate selfdiscipline
is possible, they
learn best through deliberate
play in which activities are
designed to maximize their
enjoyment and fit their attention
spans. This deliberate
play for golf/athletic learning
is created through a variety
of stations designed with
purpose and enjoyment. Visit
www.thegolfpractice.com
for more information
For off-season training,
The Golf Practice has
a 7,000 square foot indoor
training and practice center
that provides adult and
junior students of the game
with an inside facility that
replicates an on-course environment.
It has created a
place that is fun and inviting
for golfers and one that enhances
the training and practice
experience. The facility
was rated one of Chicagolands
“BEST” from Chicago
Free time, social interactions
integral at Camp Lookout
Registration is now open for
Camp Lookout, a co-ed, residential
summer camp on the Shores
of Lake Michigan just outside of
Frankfort, Mich. Lookout is a family-run,
family-oriented program
that seeks to improve the world by
helping kids learn to live and work
together in a playful and creative
environment.
“You won’t see a lot of activities
listed on our materials, because
we’re much more about the process
of things” said Director Curtis
McFall. “We work with the kids to
develop activities based on their
ideas. It’s very fluid.”
The self-described “social camp”
(as opposed to sports camp, band
camp, etc.) emphasizes the importance
of free time, co-creation of
programming and a focus on positive
connections.
“Campers are eating family-style
at meals, they’re contributing to the
upkeep of camp, they get to choose
how to spend time with each other,
they’re not limited to spending
time with only a small set of others,”
said Assistant Director Izzy
Cooper. “It feels like a real community.”
The camp is founded on noncompetitive
principles, a philosophy
that goes back well over 50
years — while the camp has been
operating for nearly 100 years.
“What we have seen year after
year is our campers feel comfortable
enough here to really be themselves,”
McFall said. “That means
they take more healthy risks, experience
more growth, and go home
with more self confidence and a
sense of belonging somewhere really
special to them.”
The Calvin and Hobbes-esque
nature of activities makes it challenging
to describe the full breadth
of Lookout’s offerings: both Cooper
and McFall describe oppor-
‘Everyone plays’ at American Youth Soccer Organization camps
The American Youth Soccer
Organization Region 425
is celebrating its 30th anniversary
this spring. AYSO
425 was founded when the
recreational soccer leagues
from Glencoe, Kenilworth,
Northfield and Winnetka
combined their youth soccer
programs and joined AYSO.
Today, with more than 1,400
children between the ages
of 4 and 14 years in the program,
AYSO 425 is one of
the strongest AYSO regions
in the country.
AYSO is celebrating its
52nd year as the largest
youth soccer organization
in the USA. AYSO was established
in the Los Angeles
area in 1964 with nine
teams. It was the dream of
a group of devoted soccer
enthusiasts who started the
organization in a garage. Today,
AYSO has 50,000 teams
and over 500,000 players
nationwide. Its goal is to
provide world-class youth
soccer programs that enrich
children’s lives.
AYSO is supported by
125,000 volunteers. Parents
donate their time as coaches,
referees, team parents, administrators
and sponsors.
Along with being a volunteer-run
organization, AYSO
is a partnership of the area
parks departments, schools
and the community. AYSO
as a youth sports organization
recognizes the importance
of providing a safe
and healthy atmosphere for
children.
Over the years, AYSO has
created many valuable programs
and concepts. Most
notably, AYSO revolutionized
youth sports with its
“Everyone Plays” and “Balanced
Teams” philosophies.
In AYSO, each child who
registers is guaranteed to
play at least half of every
game. AYSO recognizes that
games are more fun when the
teams are evenly matched,
so teams are balanced teams
based on each player’s skill
level and the overall ability
of the team.
Over 10 years ago AYSO
425 teamed up with UK International
to provide top
notch soccer instruction for
AYSO’s players and expand
the programs that AYSO 425
offers. Throughout the year,
UK International provides
AYSO 425 with fall and
spring training programs
for all ages, team coaching,
coaches’ clinics, and afterschool
clinics. UKI’s summer
camp programs provide
an age-appropriate curriculum,
which includes “Fun in
the Sun,” “Skills ‘n’ Thrills”
and “Compete with your
Feet” programs, for individual
players between 4-18
years of age. They also offer
specialized programs for
teams and goalkeepers. UK
trainers become part of the
fabric of the community by
living with host families and
working with the children in
the AYSO program.
YMCA summer day camps deliver fun for
kids, flexibility for parents
Camp registration is now
open at the North Suburban
YMCA, which offers a wide
variety of engaging programs
at the Y’s expansive
campus in Northbrook. The
2016 Camp Guide, available
at www.nsymca.org,
includes a host of traditional
camps as well as specialty
programs in dance, sports,
gymnastics and art. In addition,
the Y offers brand
new camp programs for
2016 in computer technology,
cooking, magic and balloon
animals, art, and Lego
creations.
NSYMCA camp programs
combine fun and
discovery for children with
flexibility and peace of mind
for parents. Campers have
access to the Y’s extensive
facility, including an indoor
pool, large gyms, art and
dance studio, and outdoor
play areas. Weekly field trips
take campers to water parks,
amusement parks, zoos, and
other fun venues.
Camp activities are run
by highly trained counselors
under the leadership of the
Y’s professional staff. Camp
Director Carol Sassorossi,
a veteran NSYMCA coach
and sports director, has been
with the Y for over 20 years.
She is assisted by Shannon
Cartier, an early childhood
educator with over ten
years at the Y who will supervise
the early childhood
and special camps; Ashley
Almdale, who brings seven
years of camp experience to
her supervision of the sports
camps; and Kevin Tyner,
another seven-year camp
veteran who will supervise
the traditional camps. All
four are certified teachers
in addition to their experience
with the YMCA camp
programs. NSYMCA Visual
Arts Director Cathie Winnie
and Performing Arts Director
Shannon Mundorf also
work closely with the camps
in their areas of expertise.
Parents appreciate the
unique scheduling features
that make the YMCA’s camp
truly customizable and affordable.
The Y offers half
day and full day camps, before-
and after-camp childcare,
and even transportation
from Northbrook summer
schools to afternoon camps.
Campers can sign up for sessions
by the week, accommodating
family vacations
and enabling kids to sample
different Y programs. Payment
plans are available, and
families in financial need
may apply for scholarships
through the Y’s Strong Kids
Fund.
“Camps are special at
the YMCA because they’re
designed with families in
mind,” notes Carol Sassorossi.
“Parents know that
their children will be in a
fun, safe, supportive environment,
and our scheduling
options make it easy to accommodate
work and travel
schedules.”
Noggin Builders lets kids
explore, build and create
Noggin Builders Marketing
Director Scott Landy recently
sat down with Amy Torf, the
owner and founder of Noggin
Builders in Northbrook, to talk
about the organization.
Scott Landy: Why is
creative problem solving
an important skill to teach
children?
Amy Torf: Creative problem
solving is one of the most
important skills we can teach
kids today so that they can
become tomorrow’s future
leaders. Our world is quickly
changing in ways we can’t
even imagine, so the most important
skill that our children
will need to be successful in
the future is the ability to use
creative and critical thinking
to solve problems.
SL: How does a STEM
curriculum do this?
AT: STEM (science, technology,
engineering and
math) activities are a natural
way to build problem solving
and thinking skills. The
scientific method and engineering
design process encourage
patterns like asking
questions, brainstorming,
planning, building, testing
and improving.
SL: Why is it important
that kids continue to learn
during the summer?
AT: Research has shown
that children show a decreased
level in both knowledge
and skills after summer
vacation. On average, this has
been shown to be about one
month behind where children
left off at the end of the school
year. In many cases, this is
most significantly seen in
math skills (although in low
income areas, reading may be
larger). Keeping kids engaged
in learning activities during
the summer can prevent this
backward slip. Another benefit
to engaging in fun, participatory
learning during the
summer months is that it inspires
children to view educational
activities as something
enjoyable and fun.
SL: How is Camp Noggin
Builders different?
AT: At Camp Noggin
Builders we encourage exploration
through hands-on,
project-based learning. We
believe in asking questions
rather than stating answers,
and in involving the children
in creating the path that
our explorations will take.
Grades
SUMMER 2016 CAMPS
Grades
2-9
At Noggin Builders, your
child will build more than
a science project; he or she
builds the life-long skills of
problem solving, creative
and critical thinking, perseverance,
communication and
collaboration.
SL: What types of camps
is Noggin Builders offering
this summer?
AT: A few of this year’s
themes are: “Arctic Expedition”
(grades K-2), “Crazy
Contraptions (grade 3-5)” and
“Radical Robots” (grades 6-8).
In “Arctic Expedition” campers
will design experiments
to observe how ice melts, test
how to stay warm with blubber
and build sleds with lowfriction
materials. In “Crazy
Contraptions,” campers will
explore simple machines like
pulleys, levers and ramps by
building and testing variations
to learn about their functions
before create an amazing
Rube Goldberg type machine.
“Radical Robotics” explores
the world of robotics and
campers will create a teddy
bear robot, experiment with
balance, or design the most
efficient assembly line, while
working with different kinds
of robots such as Edison and
on June 20th, 2016.
The camp’s 8-Week program
will run Monday through
Friday until August 12th at
the Christian Heritage Academy
(CHA) in Northfield,
and Owner Danny Tuchman
could not be more excited
for what his campers have in
store this summer.
“I can’t give away specifics
just yet, but lets just say
our campers are in for the
best summer ever once camp
begins,” Tuchman said. “Hi-
Five is where non-stop sports
meets fun, laughter, camaraderie,
new friends and a lot of
big surprises! So big, in fact,
that any new camp families
that call our office and mention
this article will receive
$100 off 2016 rates!”.
Tuchman knows that he
and his staff have big shoes
to fill, especially after last
year’s 25th Anniversary
celebration. The marquee
event concluded the camp’s
Nation’s #1 Sports Broadcasting Camp
THE AWARD-WINNING
first 4-week session and included
appearances by Chicago
Blackhawks mascot,
Tommy Hawk, the Chicago
Bulls promotions team and
former Chicago Bears wide
receiver, Brandon Marshall.
“Every summer we strive to
be bigger and better than the
year before, from the games
and activities we offer to the
special events and field trips
we book,” Tuchman said.
“We’ve already begun planning
our 2016 calendar and
awards ceremonies. Campers
and families should definitely
be getting excited for
not only what’s to come, but
also for who may be stopping
by to join in the fun!”
Hi-Five’s success has also
lead to expansion across the
country, lead by the hard
work, vision and dedication
of Danny Tuchman’s older
brother, Ryan. In addition to
its original North Shore location,
Hi-Five Sports Camp
now operates in downtown
Chicago, San Francisco and
Phoenix, with additional
camps opening this summer
in Gurnee, Naperville,
Westchester County, New
York and Tucson, Arizona.
Hi-Five Sports recently
launched its new website,
making it easier than ever
for families to log on and
sign up for Sports Camp.
Best of all, the North Shore’s
premier summer sports experience
offers open enrollment,
so families can register
any time as an individual,
or with a group for additional
savings. Hi-Five Sports
Camp is for boys and girls
pre-kindergarten through
eighth grade and features
a full menu of team sports,
themed weeks and summer
fun. All campers will receive
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
offers creative camp for kids
This summer, nurture
your child’s creativity at the
School of the Art Institute of
Chicago (SAIC). Our camp
sessions offer kids of all
ages an exciting opportunity
to discover and imagine with
a variety of art materials and
methods. SAIC is the leader
in educating the world’s
most influential artists, designers,
and scholars, and we
offer world-class resources
for your budding artist, including
the Art Institute of
Chicago’s renowned museum
collection, as well as
an inspirational environment
that encourages innovation,
experimentation, and fun.
The Multi-Arts Camps
are tailored for elementary
school students and are
grouped by ages 4–5, 6–7,
and 8–9. Campers work together
on a variety of interactive
projects and experience
the joys of making art
and making new friends.
Projects include painting,
drawing, mixed-media,
sculpture, printmaking, performance,
digital art, and
more. Campers ages 4–5
meet in the mornings, while
older campers can enroll for
morning, afternoon, or allday
sessions. Each one- and
two-week camp will have a
new and exciting theme, so
students can enroll in multiple
sessions. SAIC also has
1-week family camp options
where parents and siblings
can work together to create
collaborative art projects.
For older students, SAIC’s
Middle School Program
camps focus on mediaspecific
and interdisciplinary
approaches to art and
design with an emphasis on
expanding critical thinking
skills. These one- and twoweek
sessions meet Monday
through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and focus
on a discipline such as animation,
architecture, video
game design, and comics.
Each session dives into a
specific medium, so campers
can enroll in several sessions
and try out a different practice
each time.
Sessions run June 13–August
19, 2016. Financial aid
and discounts are available to
qualifying students. SAIC’s
Summer Camps foster and
support lifelong learning and
the development of creative
thought and practice in students
of all ages through the
Continuing Studies program.
