More fun and surprises in store
for Hi-Five Sports Camp in 2016
Hi-Five Sports Camp,
now entering its 26th year on
the North Shore of Chicago,
will open its campgrounds
on June 20th, 2016. The
camp’s eight-week program
will run Monday through
Friday until August 12th at
the Christian Heritage Academy
(CHA) in Northfield,
and Owner Danny Tuchman
could not be more excited
for what his campers have in
store this summer.
“I can’t give away specifics
just yet, but lets just say
our campers are in for the
best summer ever once camp
begins,” Tuchman said. “Hi-
Five is where non-stop sports
meets fun, laughter, camaraderie,
new friends and a lot of
big surprises! So big, in fact,
that any new camp families
that call our office and mention
this article will receive
$100 off 2016 rates!”
Tuchman knows that he
and his staff have big shoes
to fill, especially after last
year’s 25th Anniversary
celebration. The marquee
event concluded the camp’s
first 4-week session and included
appearances by Chicago
Blackhawks mascot,
Tommy Hawk, the Chicago
Bulls promotions team and
former Chicago Bears wide
receiver, Brandon Marshall.
“Every summer we strive to
be bigger and better than the
year before, from the games
and activities we offer to the
special events and field trips
we book,” Tuchman said.
“We’ve already begun planning
our 2016 calendar and
awards ceremonies. Campers
and families should definitely
be getting excited for
not only what’s to come, but
also for who may be stopping
by to join in the fun!”
Hi-Five’s success has also
lead to expansion across the
country, lead by the hard
work, vision and dedication
of Danny Tuchman’s older
brother, Ryan. In addition to
its original North Shore location,
Hi-Five Sports Camp
now operates in downtown
Chicago, San Francisco and
Phoenix, with additional
camps opening this summer
in Gurnee, Naperville,
Westchester County, New
York and Tucson, Arizona.
Hi-Five Sports recently
launched its new website,
making it easier than ever
for families to log on and
sign up for Sports Camp.
Best of all, the North Shore’s
premier summer sports experience
offers open enrollment,
so families can register
any time as an individual,
or with a group for additional
savings. Hi-Five Sports
Camp is for boys and girls
pre-kindergarten through
eighth grade and features
a full menu of team sports,
themed weeks and summer
fun. All campers will receive
door-to-door transportation
and the option to purchase
Hi-Five’s catered hot lunch
program. For more information
Noggin Builders lets kids
explore, build and create
Noggin Builders Marketing
Director Scott Landy recently
sat down with Amy Torf, the
owner and founder of Noggin
Builders in Northbrook,
to talk about the organization.
Scott Landy: Why is
creative problem solving
an important skill to teach
children?
Amy Torf: Creative problem
solving is one of the most
important skills we can teach
kids today so that they can
become tomorrow’s future
leaders. Our world is quickly
changing in ways we can’t
even imagine, so the most important
skill that our children
will need to be successful in
the future is the ability to use
creative and critical thinking
to solve problems.
SL: How does a STEM
curriculum do this?
AT: STEM (science, technology,
engineering and
math) activities are a natural
way to build problem solving
and thinking skills. The
scientific method and engineering
design process encourage
patterns like asking
questions, brainstorming,
planning, building, testing
and improving.
SL: Why is it important
that kids continue to learn
during the summer?
AT: Research has shown
that children show a decreased
level in both knowledge
and skills after summer
vacation. On average, this
has been shown to be about
one month behind where
children left off at the end of
the school year. In many cases,
this is most significantly
seen in math skills (although
in low income areas, reading
may be larger). Keeping kids
engaged in learning activities
during the summer can prevent
this backward slip. Another
benefit to engaging in
fun, participatory learning
during the summer months
is that it inspires children to
view educational activities as
something enjoyable and fun.
SL: How is Camp Noggin
Builders different?
AT: At Camp Noggin
Builders we encourage exploration
through hands-on,
project-based learning. We
believe in asking questions
rather than stating answers,
and in involving the children
in creating the path that
our explorations will take.
At Noggin Builders, your
child will build more than
a science project; he or she
builds the life-long skills of
problem solving, creative
and critical thinking, perseverance,
communication and
collaboration.
SL: What types of camps
is Noggin Builders offering
this summer?
AT: A few of this year’s
themes are: “Arctic Expedition”
(grades K-2),
“Crazy Contraptions (grade
3-5)” and “Radical Robots”
(grades 6-8). In “Arctic Expedition”
campers will design
experiments to observe
how ice melts, test how to
stay warm with blubber and
build sleds with low-friction
materials. In “Crazy Contraptions,”
campers will explore
simple machines like
pulleys, levers and ramps by
building and testing variations
to learn about their
functions before create an
amazing Rube Goldberg
type machine. “Radical Robotics”
explores the world
of robotics and campers will
create a teddy bear robot,
experiment with balance,
or design the most efficient
assembly line, while working
with different kinds of
robots such as Edison and
Soaring to New Heights
There’s even more for Camp Chi
campers to look forward to this summer!
A brand new Aerial Adventure
Park will take campers high into
the breezy trees and over the ravine
of Camp Chi.
This adventure park includes a
unique belay system that allows campers
to move across thirteen high elements.
There are bridges, zip lines and
rope vines, plus a six-element beginner’s
course and three ground level
challenges. The Aerial Adventure Park
is one-of-a-kind, designed especially
for Chi’s terrain and will be another
spectacular part of the magical Camp
Chi experience.
The adventure park allows campers
to challenge themselves, try something
new and experience the wooded beauty
of camp from a completely different vantage
point. The course is a self-esteem
at JCC’s Camp Chi
builder, a place to build trust and focus
on teamwork. This new addition to the
camp facility was all made possible by
Camp Chi alumni who raised funds for
the new Aerial Adventure Park.
“We’re so excited about the Aerial
Adventure Park and grateful to our
Chi alums who made this a reality,”
said Ron Levin, Director of Camp Chi.
“This course was built exclusively for
our kids and our camp and we can’t
wait to see the campers—and staff—
experience the fun and adventure
this summer.”
the joys of making art
and making new friends.
Projects include painting,
drawing, mixed-media,
sculpture, printmaking, performance,
digital art, and
more. Campers ages 4–5
meet in the mornings, while
older campers can enroll for
morning, afternoon, or allday
sessions. Each one- and
two-week camp will have a
new and exciting theme, so
students can enroll in multiple
sessions. SAIC also has
1-week family camp options
where parents and siblings
can work together to create
collaborative art projects.
For older students, SAIC’s
Middle School Program
camps focus on mediaspecific
and interdisciplinary
approaches to art and
design with an emphasis on
expanding critical thinking
skills. These one- and twoweek
sessions meet Monday
through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and focus
on a discipline such as animation,
architecture, video
game design, and comics.
Each session dives into a
specific medium, so campers
can enroll in several sessions
and try out a different practice
each time.
Sessions run June 13–August
19, 2016. Financial aid
and discounts are available to
qualifying students. SAIC’s
Summer Camps foster and
support lifelong learning and
The Golf Practice breaks
down golf for juniors
The Golf Practice is a golf
teaching academy located in
Highland Park. It offers an
array of junior programs at
its year-round indoor facility
and at outdoor camps in
Highland Park, Kenilworth
and Evanston (Canal
shores). TGP takes what it
knows about hitting a golf
ball, developing skills and
having fun to create learning
aids, training protocols and
facility concepts that transform
the experience of learning
and playing the game.
TGP helps students understand
how to properly
measure their experiences,
cultivate awareness and illuminate
the process of learning.
TGP’s teaching is more
than a couple of quick tips
and more an invitation to develop
skillfulness; to work
toward something and to go
down a path of mastery.
TGP believes a successful
junior program has to be
fast-paced, challenging and
offer recognition. However,
the golf club as a tool is not
easy for many people to understand
right away. TGP
breaks complex skills down
into bite-sized chunks and
creates games that bridge
the gap between other athletic
endeavors. The studentto-teacher
ratio is 4:1 so as
to ensure that every player
feels a connection with the
teacher and the material.
Before children have matured
to the stage of their
mental development where
goals and deliberate selfdiscipline
is possible, they
learn best through deliberate
play in which activities
are designed to maximize
their enjoyment and fit their
attention spans. This deliberate
play for golf/athletic
learning is created through a
variety of stations designed
with purpose and enjoyment.
For off-season training, The
Golf Practice has a 7,000
square foot indoor training
and practice center The facility
was rated one of Chicagolands
“BEST” from
‘Everyone plays’ at American
Youth Soccer Organization camps
The American Youth Soccer
Organization Region 425
is celebrating its 30th anniversary
this spring. AYSO
425 was founded when the
recreational soccer leagues
from Glencoe, Kenilworth,
Northfield and Winnetka
combined their youth soccer
programs and joined AYSO.
Today, with more than 1,400
children between the ages
of 4 and 14 years in the program,
AYSO 425 is one of
the strongest AYSO regions
in the country.
AYSO is celebrating its
52nd year as the largest
youth soccer organization
in the USA. AYSO was established
in the Los Angeles
area in 1964 with nine
teams. It was the dream of
a group of devoted soccer
enthusiasts who started the
organization in a garage. Today,
AYSO has 50,000 teams
and over 500,000 players
nationwide. Its goal is to
provide world-class youth
soccer programs that enrich
children’s lives.
AYSO is supported by
125,000 volunteers. Parents
donate their time as coaches,
referees, team parents, administrators
and sponsors.
Along with being a volunteer-run
organization, AYSO
is a partnership of the area
parks departments, schools
and the community.
Over the years, AYSO has
created many valuable programs
and concepts. Most
notably, AYSO revolutionized
youth sports with its
“Everyone Plays” and “Balanced
Teams” philosophies.
In AYSO, each child who
registers is guaranteed to
play at least half of every
game. AYSO recognizes that
games are more fun when the
teams are evenly matched,
so teams are balanced teams
based on each player’s skill
level and the overall ability
of the team.
Over 10 years ago, AYSO
425 teamed up with UK International
to provide top
notch soccer instruction for
AYSO’s players and expand
the programs that AYSO 425
offers.
Throughout the year,
UK International provides
AYSO 425 with fall and
spring training programs
for all ages, team coaching,
coaches’ clinics, and afterschool
clinics.
