Duo continuing to
thrill its fans with
music, travel tours
Husband and wife team
Phil and Amy have been
busier than ever celebrating
their entertainment and travel
tour endeavors.
The Mokena Public Library
just finished presenting
this talented couple’s Broadway
and Memory Lane Show
for their patrons. The performance
was an overwhelming
success and offered that there
would be more appearances
with these entertaining vocalists
in store.
It’s the 20th anniversary
of the recording artists’ ever
popular “Opening Night”
compact disc that features
the music of Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s “The Phantom
and of the Opera” and “Les
Miserables” selections. It’s
a fabulous compact disc of
timeless fame that continues
to sell greatly through the
www.philnamymusic.com
website, as well as their performances.
Phil and Amy will be
celebrating this album’s anniversary
with a three-day
performance scheduled
for summer on Aug. 1–3 at
Starved Rock Lodge. Their
musical tribute series will
also feature the vocal duo’s
daughter Lucie, who so well
compliments their variety of
performances.
In addition to their musical
entertainment, Phil and
Amy have been hosting motorcoach
tours for more than
23 years as “The St. Christopher
Travelers,” adopting
the name of the patron saint
of travelers. The travel tours
all began when they took
their choir on a three-day
Route 66 excursion to an
Ozark Valley Lodge. Since
then, the tours have grown
by leaps and bounds as they
host a repertoire of wonderful
destinations in what they
share as “visiting authentic
America.”
Some upcoming travel
venues include a nine-day
visit to Cape Cod/New England
this June, and later in
June, the travelers visit a favorite
getaway to the bikes,
horse carriages and fudge of
peaceful Mackinac Island,
Michigan.
In October, the St. Christopher
Travelers get to experience
more authentic
America with their popular
three-day Halloween/Christmas
journey to Frankenmuth,
Michigan. New on the
horizon of tours is this musical
couple’s long awaited
trip to host the Music City of
Nashville, Tennessee in June
of 2017. One of the highlights
of this trip includes
their stay at the Gaylord Opryland
Resort. The trip also
features a cruise on the General
Jackson Showboat, The
Ryman Auditorium, a tour
along Music Row and more
before continuing on to the
Smoky Mountains. Looking
ahead to 2018 is a nine-day
getaway to Yellowstone and
Tetons National Parks. Oneday
trips feature a Route 66
Illinois tour on April 28, the
Lyric Opera’s “The King &
I,” May 17 and a motorcoach
again departing from Tinley
Park heading to the Aug. 3
Starved Rock “Phantom/Les
Miserables” musical tribute
with Phil, Amy and Lucie.
Clarendale of
Mokena recognized
for its quality care
There are many great reasons to live at
Mokena’s No. 1 senior living community,
and we found one more. Clarendale boasts
of being the newest property in the area offering
rental apartments for independent living,
assisted living and memory care under
one roof, located just south of Route 30 on
Wolf Road. Communities operating under an
assisted living license are surveyed annually
to maintain standards of excellence in senior
care. In fact, Clarendale was just surveyed
by Illinois Department of Public Health and
was successfully 100 percent deficiencyfree.
Components such as cleanliness, quality
care, promoting resident’s dignity and
proper clinical documentation are reviewed.
In a buyer’s market, it is the little things
like the culture, cleanliness, efficiency and
delicious food that make all the difference
for residents.
“I moved in, and it didn’t take me long
to fall in love with the place,” said Marie,
a current resident. “The food is very good.
The people here are wonderful. There’s always
something going on; there are things
for us to do, play cards and so forth. You’re
not lacking anything here. If you are it’s your
fault. I just love it.”
Clarendale is an environment that captures
the essence of a beautiful, brand new,
home-like environment and an invested staff
that cares. The comfort of knowing a professional
staff will take care of everyday chores
and personal needs allows them to focus on
quality of life, active lifestyles and friendships
in the comforts of home and culture of
a community.
“We couldn’t have done better,” residents
Jim and Marilyn said. “Our friends can’t believe
how nice this is. We just recommended
it to someone today! We are very happy.”
Can one really have it all? The residents
at Clarendale certainly think it is as close to
perfect as one can get.
Nutrient-dense foods vital to healthy nutrition for older adults
Meredith Dobes
Contributing Editor
Eating well is important
for people of any age, but it
can be particularly important
for seniors to help them stay
healthy and maintain their
independence.
The National Institute on
Aging and the National Library
of Medicine — both
parts of the National Institutes
of Health — joined
to create NIHSeniorHealth.
gov, a website that includes
topics related to
senior health that is meant
to be easily accessible for
seniors, their family and
friends, according to the
site’s description.
In the “Eating Well as You
Get Older” section of the
site, tips and guidelines for
nutrition are outlined, along
with some tools seniors can
use to make sure they are
eating a balanced, nutritional
diet daily.
Seniors are encouraged
to eat nutrient-dense foods
in all meals and snacks
throughout the day, including
fruits, vegetables, grains,
low-fat or fat-free dairy,
seafood, lean poultry and
meats, beans, eggs and unsalted
nuts. Saturated and
trans fats, cholesterol, salt
and added sugars are to be
kept to a minimum.
Another tip the NIH provides
is for older adults
to drink plenty of water
throughout the day, which
helps prevent constipation
and dehydration.
NIH references the My-
Plate plan from the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, at
www.ChooseMyPlate.gov,
to help people determine
whether they are eating a
healthy mix of foods.
Calorie intake
A person’s calorie intake
depends on the person’s sex,
height, weight and physical
activity level.
For adults over 50, the
NIH provides guidelines to
calorie intake.
A woman who is moderately
active should consume
1,800 calories a day, and a
man who is moderately active
should consume about
2,200 calories a day, according
to the NIH.
Paying attention to nutrient
contents and serving
sizes on nutrition facts labels
can help a person determine
how much a certain
amount of food is going to
consume, percentage-wise,
of an average 2,000-calorieper-day
diet.
When to talk to your doctor
Some older adults may experience
a loss of appetite or
interest in eating as they age
because of problems with
taste, smell, chewing, digestion
or other factors.
People with certain health
conditions also may have
different nutritional needs
than others.
An older adult’s doctor
can provide him or her with
information about how to
meet nutritional needs and
can even recommend dietary
supplements to fulfill
those needs.
According to the NIH,
avoiding certain foods or not
eating enough can cause a
person to lack certain necessary
vitamins and nutrients
in their diet or could even
mean that a person is not
consuming enough calories.
Benefits of eating well
Eating a healthy, balanced
diet can help to prevent
heart disease, stroke, Type 2
diabetes, bone loss, certain
types of cancer and anemia,
according to the NIH.
It also can provided necessary
nutrients to keep
muscles, bones, organs and
the overall body healthy by
ensuring a person receives
enough vitamins, minerals,
protein, carbohydrates, fats
and water on a daily basis.
For more information
on eating nutritiously, visit
www.NIHSeniorHealth.gov
professional.
New Lenox-based Dryer Vent Wizard educating
its customers on clothes dryer safety
Hidden build-up in
clothes dryer vent
considered hazardous
Most people know they need to
clean out their dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire traps,
as well as completely efficient dryer
performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner of Dryer
Vent Wizard, opened his New
Lenox-based business in 2009.
Lint is the villain — lint that has
been allowed to build up and linger
too long in the dryer’s exhaust
vent.
The U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and the U.S.
Fire Administration estimate that
15,500 fires associated with clothes
dryers occur annually. These fires
account for an average of 20
deaths, 370 injuries and more than
$88 million in property damage.
“Failure to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor cited in U.S.
Fire Administration reports.
“It is something very few people
know about or think about,”
said Enzenberger, whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration and installation.
“It is the leading cause
of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation also can cause
dryers to stop working or to work
inefficiently. A dryer vent clogged
with lint can add as much as $18-
$24 per month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes problems
as well,” Enzenberger said.
“The dryer exhaust duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal or semi-rigid metal and secured
with metal heat-resistant
tape rather than duct tape. I often
find plastic or foil accordion-type
material, which can easily trap lint
and is more susceptible to kinks
and crushing.”
Warning signs include:
•Clothes are taking more than
one cycle to dry, especially
jeans and towels.
•No lint visible on lint screen.
•Dryer repeatedly stops during a
cycle.
•Clothes have moldy smell after
dry cycle.
•Clothes are very hot after a dry
cycle.
•The top of the dryer hot to the
touch while running.
•There’s excess lint left on clothing.
“This has been a consumer education
process, but it’s hard to get
the word out,” Enzenberger said.
“Most don’t call until they have a
serious problem with their dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes
dryers as a household item in need
of regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer performance
and promote safety by cleaning the
lint screen between each use, ensuring
the connection between the
dryer and wall is made of compliant
material and remains unkinked
and having the dryer exhaust duct
cleaned regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection and
cleaning at least annually.
Something to watch for in spring
is that birds will begin to build
nests, and a popular nesting site
for birds is inside dryer vent lines.
Spring is an important time to
have an inspection and cleaning of
clothes dryers and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip — never
let your clothes dryer run when you
are out of the house or asleep.
FAT BURNING AND FAT METABOLISM.
proves important in
the weight loss battle
• NO Hormones
• NO Exercise Required
• NO Packaged foods
• NO Stimulants
• NO Drugs
• NO Surgery
Everyone gains weight for
different reasons, and cookie-cutter
diets do not address
the underlying reasons for a
person’s weight gain. Vitality
utilizes the NutriMost
System, which accounts
for more than 2,800 factors
contributing to weight gain,
specifically fat burning, fat
storage, fat metabolism, detoxification
and hormone
balance.
Because of NutriMost
Resonant Frequency technology,
Vitality can discover
what is out of balance
and work to naturally bring
the body back into balance.
Once balanced, weight loss
is easy, fast and safe.
For example, Rick, pictured
here, has been a type
two diabetic for 15 years.
“I’m taking four shots of
insulin every day,” Rick said
when he came to Vitality.
“My doctor told me on my
last check-up that my body
was becoming resistant to
the insulin. He told me that
if I don’t make a drastic
change, that I would not be
alive for my granddaughter’s
wedding. That was very sobering
for me.
“I got a personal trainer
and began exercising four
times a week. It was discouraging
to only lose 1-2
pounds per week. I lost 20
pounds over the course of
the year and gained it all
back, and then some, over
Christmas. I needed help.
I needed something that
would work for me.”
Rick is just one of thousands
that have benefitted
from the NutriMost program.
He has lost more than
80 pounds, his doctor took
him off his insulin and he
has not had to have another
shot of insulin since.
“I have my life back
again,” he said. “I can bend
over without getting tired, I
have tons of energy throughout
the day, and I know I will
be there when my granddaughter
gets married.”
Vitality is helping people
transform their lives without
drugs, surgery, hormones
and prepackaged foods. This
is all possible because of the
breakthrough technology of
NutriMost.
Dr. Jason Heydinger and
the team at Vitality strive daily
to realize their vision of a
happier, healthier, full-of-life
community with less sickness,
less disease, and less
suffering, where children are
healthier, families are happier,
and marriages and relationships
are enriched.
Walking Book Club keeps participants physically, mentally active
THOMAS CZAJA, Contributing Editor
At 9 a.m. every Wednesday, a group of
approximately 10-20 people can be found
routinely walking the track at The Oaks Recreation
& Fitness Center in Mokena.
The Walking Book Club, organized
through the Mokena Community Public Library
District, spends 30 minutes doing laps.
After the physical exercise is complete, the
book club heads to a quiet area on the second
floor of the fitness center and uses the
next 30 minutes to review its current reading
material.
The group started roughly three years ago
when Michaelene Cervantes, director of collection
development, along with Nancy Baker,
head of circulation, helped bring the idea
to the library after attending a conference.
“Most people [in the club] are retired,”
Baker said. “Some don’t like going out at
night and prefer being out during the day.
It’s mainly retired women. It’s a great opportunity
to make friends and learn something.”
Rita Casarotto, who has been part of the
group for several years, said the club offers a
good balance for its members.
“You get a little physical exercise, and
you get the mental exercise with the book,”
Casarotto said.
Books are selected by the group,
while Cervantes and Baker help provide
copies of the selection from the
library. From there, passionate and respectful
discussion occurs, according to
Cervantes.
“Everyone is very comfortable with speaking
their mind,” Cervantes said. “Everyone
will listen and give you attention, but they
don’t hold opinions against one another.”
As for walking, the chance to take part in
a simple physical workout in a group setting
can be a step to help members on the
path to healthier habits, Cervantes said.
“I think it’s really important,” she said.
“I’m not retired, but I think it is difficult
when you retire. Usually, your work is very
social, so I think for those members of the
group that is important.
“They are connecting again with other
people that have the same interest of reading
New Lenox man beats lung cancer with help from Silver Cross specialists
Chuck Prah smoked most
of his life – right up to the
day when he had the first of
two surgeries to remove the
cancer in his lungs.
It was on Christmas Eve
2014, during a routine treatment
for iron deficiency,
when Dr. Lawrence Schilder,
Medical Director of
Hematology/Oncology with
the University of Chicago
Medicine Comprehensive
Cancer Center at Silver
Cross, recommended a GI
workup. He sent the 70 yearold
to see Dr. Doug Lee who
performed endoscopy at Silver
Cross Hospital but also
thought to order a CT lung
screening since Chuck had a
significant smoking history.
What they found were several
tumors in Chuck’s lungs.
“Chuck had stage 1 lung
cancer, which when treated
appropriately can be cured,”
Dr. Schilder said. “We were
fortunate to discover the lung
nodules at an early stage, before
they would have caused
symptoms.”
Dr. Schilder brought
Chuck’s PET, CT, and biopsy
reports to the Multidisciplinary
Lung Cancer
Conference at Silver Cross.
A diverse group of lung cancer
specialists representing
medical oncology, pulmonology,
radiation oncology,
interventional radiology,
and thoracic surgery,
reviewed the information
and discussed what would be
the best course of action to
eradicate the deadly disease.
That same day they provided
Chuck with a recommended
treatment plan that included
surgical resection.
“I was so impressed that
there was a team of people
making sure I was getting
the best treatment available
as soon as possible,” said the
New Lenox man.
Chuck had masses in both
lungs.
“The right lung tumor was
the larger dominant mass
and required immediate attention
as the first stage in
his treatment,” said Chuck’s
thoracic surgeon, Dr. David
Cziperle. “The left lung mass
was smaller and a repeat surveillance
PET/CT scan was
planned to determine if the
mass enlarged over time.”
Just a few weeks after the
initial diagnosis, Dr. Cziperle
performed a right thoracotomy,
lobectomy, and
excision of lymph nodes to
remove the cancerous cells
from Chuck’s right lung and
to provide definitive staging
of his cancer. Fortunately,
that cancer was contained
and no further treatment was
needed.
Three months later, Chuck
had another PET/CT scan.
“Drs. Schilder and Cziperle
didn’t like the way it
looked,” Chuck said. “The
largest of the three spots on
my left lung had grown, so
Dr. Cziperle took me back
into surgery on July 23,
2015.”
Lab tests confirmed that
the resected tumors represented
two additional cancers
on the left - or three
separate cancers in only 6
months.
After a brief recovery,
Chuck underwent chemotherapy
treatments in the
University of Chicago Medicine
Comprehensive Cancer
Center at Silver Cross to increase
the odds of curing of
all his lung cancers.
“I thought it would be
scary,” said Chuck. “But I
was wrong. They gave me
two different types of medicine
to help with the nausea
and I never lost weight. Everyone
was so good to me.
I got the best care close to
home.”
Today, Chuck is cancerfree
and back serving as a
bailiff at the Will County
Courthouse.
“With the team at Silver
Cross, I knew I could survive
this,” said Chuck, who
just celebrated his 50th wedding
anniversary.
Bickford Senior Living focuses on quality care
Bickford Senior Living was
founded in 1991 and currently
operates 53 communities in 10
states. The Bickford family began
its quest into senior living for their
beloved mother, Mary Bickford,
whose needs became too great for
them to manage.
As they researched senior living
options, they were shocked by
what they found. The options offered
too much or too little — none
met her needs, and nothing felt like
home. Because they couldn’t find
what they wanted, they decided to
create what she needed.
Her life and her disease exposed
them to all the other “Marys” out
there — people with amazing stories,
with their own personal history,
homes and family who need
exactly the same thing Mary needed.
From the very beginning, trusted
caregivers were chosen to care
for Mary the way her own family
would. Still today, Bickford caregivers
remain devoted to that desire,
striving to care for residents
just as they would for their own
loved ones because each and every
resident is someone’s cherished
family member.
The Bickford family understands
that selecting a senior living community
for you or your loved one is
one of the toughest decisions that
you will ever face. They will work
with you to ensure that the transition
is as easy and comfortable as
possible. They realize that assistance
is very personal, and when
companied with a desire to enhance
someone’s life, it moves beyond
meeting a need. It creates a
memory. While many receive similar
services and amenities, they
are fulfilled to accommodate each
individual’s personal preferences.
They labor diligently to create a
relationship with each person that
allows them to enrich their experiences
and offer them an opportunity
of genuine happiness.
Bickford Assisted Living and
Memory Care services offer personalized
care, medication and
mobility assistance, memory care,
health care coordination, dining
experiences, socialization, apartment
living and maintenance free.
Additional services include companion
care and short-term stay.
Bickford Senior Living’s newest
branch in Tinley Park is under
construction and set to open
this summer. Once constructed,
it will include a total of 60 apartments
and provide similar services
to Bickford’s existing portfolio.
The Bickford family encourages
anyone to stop by the information
center and make a $500 deposit to
reserve an apartment and save up
to 25 percent off the apartment rate
for six months.
One also can stop by from 4-6
p.m. April 7 for their Cupola Raising
Ceremony and to view fully
completed model apartments. The
Cupola Raising Ceremony symbolizes
the near opening of the branch,
and placing a cupola on top of the
roof reminds the Bickford caregivers
that the branch is an extension
of the residents’ home and the caregivers
are simply the guests.
Epidural steroid injections keep
Chicago woman traveling the world
The statistics are sobering:
eight out of 10 Americans
will suffer serious back pain
at some point in their lives.
Depending on its severity
and duration, it may lead to
time off work, lost sleep and
an inability to take care of
daily activities.
But there’s a silver lining
too. More than 95 percent of
back pain sufferers will be
able to avoid back surgery
through more conservative
measures like physical
therapy, pain medication and
steroid injections.
Eleanor Morrow of Chicago
is one of them. The
72-year-old retired anesthesia
technician, who suffers
from two herniated discs,
made an appointment to see
board-certified physiatrist
George Charuk, D.O., on
staff at the Ingalls Advanced
Orthopedic Institute, when
back pain nearly sidelined
her.
“The pain would start in
my back and go down my
left leg,” she explains. “I felt
pain when I was walking,
bending over or just picking
things up.”
And, bicycling — one of
her favorite activities —
was out of the question. On
a scale of 1 to 10, Morrow
says most days her pain was
a “9.” To her relief, Dr. Charuk
offered a non-surgical
outpatient option to alleviate
the pain: epidural steroid injections.
“Epidural steroid injections
are a minimally invasive
treatment that delivers
potent medication directly,
or very near, the source of
pain generation,” Dr. Charuk
said.
During an ESI procedure,
a solution containing
the steroid cortisone is used
in conjunction with a local
anesthetic such as lidocaine.
Since inflammation
is a common component of
many low back conditions,
the use of the anti-inflammatory
steroid reduces swelling
and the accompanying pain.
With the aid of X-ray guidance,
the drugs are delivered
into the epidural space of the
spine — the area between
the protective covering of
the spinal cord and the bony
vertebrae.
“The goal is to reduce pain
so that patients can resume
normal activities,” he added.
Beyer Chiropractic Center in Frankfort using pain
management treatment for peripheral neuropathy
Beyer Chiropractic Center is improving
peripheral neuropathy patient
care with the addition of the
horizontal microcurrent therapy
care program. The treatment caters
to individuals suffering from
peripheral neuropathy by utilizing
microcurrent pulses to repair and
regenerate damaged nerve endings.
“We are so excited to be expanding
our capabilities,” said Dr. Stephen
Beyer, chiropractic physician.
“This technology will allow us to
help patients find relief while increasing
mobility and control of
their nervous systems. It will also
reduce the need for harmful narcotics
with serious side effects.”
Peripheral neuropathy is a common
disease that describes damage
to the peripheral nervous system,
which transmits information from
the brain and spinal cord to every
other part of the body. It is estimated
that upwards of 20 million
Americans suffer from this illness.
Common symptoms of this condition
include temporary numbness,
tingling and pricking sensations,
sensitivity to touch or muscle
weakness. Others may suffer more
extreme symptoms, including
burning pain — especially at night,
muscle wasting, paralysis, or organ
or gland dysfunction.
The horizontal therapy device is
distinctly unique, unlike anodyne
or any other therapy used for peripheral
neuropathy.
“There are hundreds of medical
electro-pulse machines in use in
the medical field, but no other device
can stimulate both electrically
and biochemically,” Beyer said.
“Dying peripheral nerves need to
be revived and then treated to regenerate
for patients to see true
results.”
In addition to reviving the
nerves, other benefits include reduced
pain and inflammation without
additional drugs or medication,
increased blood flow, allowing the
nerves to receive more nutrients,
and improved metabolism and
healing.
The treatment plan consists of
a series of horizontal therapy sessions
that last approximately 45
minutes each. The actual number
of sessions will be dependent upon
progressiveness of the patient’s
condition.
“We are healing nerves — sick
dying nerves that have stopped firing
electrically,” Beyer said. “We
aren’t treating symptoms. We are
fixing the problems causing the
symptoms. There is a life-changing
difference in that, and it is one we
are excited to bring to the community.”
The center, in addition to chiropractic
care, is known for its success
in treating chronic conditions,
including thyroid issues, irritable
bowel syndrome and peripheral
neuropathy.
“It’s terrific,” O’Gallagher
said. “I walk regularly anyway,
but it’s nice to be able
to combine the walking with
a reading assignment.”
Ultimately, the Walking
to keep marching on with its
core members, with anyone
from the community or area
welcome to give their unique
format a try.
“[The club] loves the social
aspect of reading the
books, and they get some
“Especially during the wintertime
where you’re feeling
a little claustrophobic
South Suburban Hearing
Health center working
to reduce risk of diabetes
There has been a link between
diabetes and hearing
loss since the 1960s, but no
real pinpoint to a possible
cause was found until just a
few years ago.
In 2008, the National Institutes
of Health conducted
a study that showed hearing
loss is about twice as common
in adults with diabetes
than with those who do not
have the disease. After testing
more than 4,700 participants’
ability to hear a range
of frequencies in both ears,
there was a strong correlation
found between diabetes
and hearing loss across all
frequencies, especially in the
high-frequency range. Of the
participants with diabetes,
54 percent reported a hearing
loss for high-frequency
sounds. Of the participants
without diabetes 32 percent
reported a hearing loss for
high-frequency sounds.
So why is it that diabetes
affects hearing loss risk?
Some researchers suggest
that hearing loss in diabetics
is due to poor circulation.
Elevated blood sugar levels
can damage blood vessels
thereby reducing blood flow
to certain areas and subsequently
cause damages to
the structures of the inner
EPIDURAL
From Page 12
tion, that’s precisely what Morrow did.
“My first injection lasted two years,” she
said. “I had absolutely no pain at all.”
She has had three epidural injections in
the last five years, and all have provided the
relief she needs to enjoy biking, walking —
and traveling the world.
“That’s why I need to keep my back in
shape,” she adds. “I do a lot of sightseeing
and stair climbing. In fact, she successfully
climbed more than 100 stairs to walk on the
ear which are highly vascularized
and do not have a
backup supply of blood flow.
Thus, hearing loss could be
the result of permanent damages
to the blood vessels in
the inner ear. The American
Diabetes Association
theorizes that a person with
a higher percentage of glycated
hemoglobin, or A1c,
possesses a greater risk of
developing hearing loss in
the future. A recent Japanese
study presents evidence that
hearing loss may be related
to A1c levels.
The current global prevalence
of diabetes is estimated
to be 9 percent among
adults and is estimated to
affect nearly one third of the
world’s population by the
year 2050. Diabetes is becoming
an extremely common
disease, making it a
larger contributor to hearing
loss. Because of the relationship
between hearing loss
risk and diabetes, it is a good
idea for people with diabetes
to get their hearing tested annually
to watch for drops in
hearing ability.
One can lower the risk of
developing diabetes by exercising
regularly and maintaining
a balanced nutritional
diet. Doing so will keep
one’s A1c levels lower and
within the recommended
ranges. Also, avoid tobacco
use, as smoking increases
the risk of cardiovascular
disease, which can further
compound your risk for
hearing damage. If diabetes
is already present, moderate
blood glucose levels with
insulin or oral medication,
whichever is required based
on the type of diabetes.
Reducing diabetic-related
health complications can
minimize the risk of developing
other health problems,
including hearing loss.
Surviving a stroke: the Jack Sheehan story
Peg Sheehan was out to
lunch with the girls when her
husband called complaining
of a horrible headache and
blurry vision. She offered
to come home, but Jack said
he was alright. He wasn’t.
Shortly after they hung up,
Jack called back asking Peg
to dial 911. On March 26,
2014, Manhattan paramedics
transported him to Silver
Cross Hospital’s Emergency
Department where a Code
Stroke Team was waiting.
To rule out an aneurysm,
emergency medicine physician
Dr. Anthony Murino
ordered a CT Scan on the
64-year-old. The test showed
Jack had blood within the ventricular
system of his brain.
Within minutes, Dr. Kamran
Khan, neurosurgeon, had inserted
a drain to relieve the
pressure. Once Jack’s headache
and high blood pressure
Vivek Iyengar MD
Trina Brucato PA-C
were under control, Dr. Richard
Burgess performed an angiogram,
which showed some
irregularities on the right side
of Jack’s brain.
“It was not an aneurysm
but a fistula or tear,” recalls
Dr. Burgess, interventional
neurosurgeon/stroke neurologist
with the Silver Cross
Neuroscience Institute, “It
needed to be repaired or Jack
could have been severely
disabled or worse.”
A MRI uncovered that
Jack had an arterial venous
malformation of the brain
stem that was the cause of
the bleeding and pressure.
After consulting with his
partner, Harish Shownkeen
M.D., Dr. Burgess developed
a detailed treatment
plan that offered Jack the
best chance to regain his
abilities. This included Dr.
Khan immediately inserting
a second drain to relieve
the fluid and blood that was
building up on the left side
of Jack’s brain.
Surgery was scheduled
for the next day later to stop
the bleeding. Because of
Jack’s history of heart disease,
his cardiologist, Dr. Joseph
Stella, evaluated him to
make sure he could survive
the procedure. On March
28, Dr. Burgess took Jack
to Silver Cross Hospital’s
endovascular suite where
using a type of “super glue”
he closed off several fistulas
between the artery and vein
near Jack’s brain stem.
“All the doctors and
nurses were amazing,” exclaimed
Peg. “Dr. Burgess
quite a while.”
Healing Takes Time
and Talent
Jack spent several weeks
in the ICU where Peg and
the nurses played music to
help with Jack’s healing.
He was struggling with high
blood pressure and an abnormal
heart rate and there
was concern that Jack may
have pneumonia. The doctors
decided to keep Jack
sedated until his vitals were
under control. This lasted
until March 31. A couple
days later, Jack was ready
to start therapy with The Rehabilitation
Institute of Chicago
(RIC) at Silver Cross
Hospital. His team consisted
of physical and occupational
therapists and speechlanguage
pathologists and
physical and rehabilitation
medicine physicians under
the direction of Dr. Andrew
Hendrix.
“The therapists worked
hard to get Jack ready to
move from the ICU to RIC’s
rehabilitation unit on the
5th floor,” said Peg. “They
taught me what I could do
to help which included exercises
for getting him up and
for swallowing. This was
very difficult for Jack. He
had a feeding tube for a long
time. Seeing the therapists
was always the favorite part
of Jack’s day.”
As Jack’s progress improved,
he regained his sense
of humor and even knew
who the golfers were competing
in the Master’s tournament.
On April 17, Jack
was transferred to RIC’s inpatient
rehab unit at Silver
Cross where he adjusted to a
rigorous schedule to further
improve his mobility, speech
and memory.
On April 25, Jack was finally
able to eat real food,
climb stairs and do crossword
puzzles. His brain was
healing. Just one week later,
Jack was able to ascend a full
flight of stairs, walk without
assistance, and even won a
game of bean bag toss.
On May 9, after spending
nearly 7 weeks in the
Hospital, Jack went home.
His double vision was finally
gone. He continued
his therapy as an outpatient
with RIC at Silver Cross
for a month. An angiogram
on June 24 revealed Jack’s
brain had healed. There were
no signs of fistulas.
Ready to hit the links
A Eucharistic minister
who volunteers on Wednesdays
at Hospital, Peg attributed
Jack’s recovery to the
power of prayer and the entire
team at Silver Cross.
“They were supportive
and never gave up always
thinking out of the box to
help Jack; especially Dr.
Burgess who would always
calm me down and listen to
my concerns,” said Peg. “He
is a very caring physician
and sensitive both the patient
and family’s needs.”
Peg adds, “When something
like this happens, you
don’t always get to choose
your doctors and nurses.
Anyone who gets Dr. Burgess
and the rest of the Silver
Cross staff is very fortunate.”
The Sheehans recently
moved to Orland Park to be
closer to their children and
grandchildren. Jack is back
golfing, although he admits
the game will never be the
same. He also helps Peg
out around the house – even
cooking and cleaning. Peg’s
Tinley Park doctor is first in the area to use clinically proven therapy for peripheral or diabetic neuropathy
Staff Report
Peripheral neuropathy is one
of the most common chronic diseases
in the United States with
more than 20 million Americans
having it. Peripheral neuropathy
or “nerve damage” disrupts the
body’s ability to communicate with
its muscles, skin, joints or internal
organs. It is like the body’s electrical
wiring system breaking down,
causing numbness, pain, weakness
and poor coordination. There is a
problem with the nerves that carry
information to and from the brain
and spinal nerves. This can produce
pain, loss of sensation and inability
to control muscles.
The seven signs of peripheral
neuropathy are: numbness, burning
feet, cramping, sharp electric pain,
pain when walking, diffticulty
sleeping from leg discomfort and
prickling/tingling feelings.
The Symptoms depend on which
type of nerve is affected. The three
main types of nerves are: those that
carry sensations (sensory); those
that control muscles (motor) and
those that carry information to organs
and glands (autonomic).
Damage to sensory fibers results
in changes in sensation, burning
sensations, nerve pain, tingling or
numbness, or an inability to determine
joint position, which causes
in-coordination. For many neuropathies,
sensation changes often
begin in the feet and progress toward
the center of the body with
involvement of other areas as the
condition worsens. Diabetes is a
common cause for sensory neuropathy.
Damage to the motor fibers
interferes with muscle control and
can cause weakness, loss of muscle
bulk and loss of dexterity. Sometimes
cramps are a sign of motor
nerve involvement.
Other muscle related symptoms
include the following: difficulty
breathing or swallowing, falling
(from legs buckling or tripping
over toes), lack of dexterity (such
as being unable to button a shirt),
lack of muscle control, lack of
muscle tissue (muscle atrophy) and
muscle twitching or cramping.
The autonomic nerves control
involuntary or semi-voluntary
functions, such as control of internal
organs and blood pressure.
What can be done?
Dr. Ed Beyer has seen patients
who have suffered with symptoms
for far too long. Some may suffer
only minor symptoms, while
others feel the debilitating affects
of Peripheral Neuropathy and are
kept from participating in their life,
making even simple daily activities
almost impossible.
Beyer believes in education people
about their chronic conditions
so they know what choices they
have in treatment.
“At my workshop participants
learn about revolutionary breakthrough
protocols in the treatment
of Peripheral neuropathy…
one of the therapies I offer is
Horizontal Therapy which is the
latest, breakthrough in the science
of electro-medicine and the
most advanced and effective form
of bioelectric treatment available
to date,” Beyer said.
Beyer said he is proud to be the
first in the area to offer this to his
patients …pain management without
drugs or surgery to get lasting
results.
