The Band Be Easy
has experienced a
growth in popularity
over the past three
and a half years that
its members would have been
hard-pressed to imagine. At One
Spark 2015, Jacksonville’s annual
crowdfunding festival, it was
voted #1 for music.
Although Aaron Thomas, one
of the lead vocalists, doesn’t like
Gregory ‘Soulo’ Lyons
Lead Guitar
to stamp the group with any one
genre, he says the band produces
soulful sounds.
“We blend different genres,
and we’re a soulful type of Rock
‘n’ Roll and Blues and Motown
and Reggae; just a blend of all
these different styles that we kind
of created as our own,” he says.
Thomas is joined by Soulo
Lyons, Arthur Jones (A.J.), Will
Montgomery, Rick Benjamin
and Jonathan Johnson. Not all
members are from Jacksonville,
Rick Benjamin
Bass Guitar
but they have come to enjoy the
city’s burgeoning music scene and
their local mates.
“I love the city,” Thomas says.
“We’ve reached out to all different
sides of town [and we’re able] to
be a part of great communities
throughout. We wanna come
in and socialize and meet new
people.
“As a minority – an all-black
band – sometimes you get in a
situation where you get a little
uncomfortable. There’s a lot of

dreads in the building,” he says
of different audiences. But here,
“it’s irrelevant. People are people,
[it] doesn’t matter what color,
and we all just wanna have a
good time. The city has played
a huge part in allowing us to be
ourselves, watching and helping
us grow.”
Though members of The Band
Be Easy played at the Beaches
for the longest time, they’ve
branched out. Regulars in St.
Augustine, they’ll do a show at
Arthur Jones
Lead Keyboard
Downtown’s Art Walk every now
and then. And they play at River
City Brewing Company every
other Sunday.
The group’s self-titled first
album dropped in February.
“We had a lot of time to think
about ... what we wanted to do,
what crowd we wanted to reach,”
Thomas says. It mixes genres and
showcases the talent and variety of
the band.
Already at work on their next
album, the band is focusing on a
more soulful Reggae style.
Despite playing more than 300
shows last year, Thomas says the
band still appears for the love of
the music. “We’ve enjoyed every
minute of it,” he says of the band’s
journey. “We’re up there to make
people forget about the drama and
… negativity in their lives. Be
easy. Enjoy the time with friends
and music. That’s what our vibe is
about.”
He added, “It’s all about
positivity. Let it come easy to you.”
REVIEW
‘The Band Be Easy’
This band has been together for
about three and a half years but has
yet to sign with a record label.
“We’re not against any labels,”
Aaron Thomas explains, but “we’ll
consider our options if the right one
comes through. … Until then, we’re
just kinda pushing on our own.”
The Band Be Easy released
its first album in February. Some
have criticized it for a lack of genre
consistency.
Although the group has been
labeled a cover band, its self-titled
album consists of 10 originals. For
those who have only heard the band
live, it takes a little adjusting to not
see Thomas’ dancing or Lyons with
his dreads stuffed under the massive
hat he sports. But the talent is all
there with the excellent variety fans
experience at the band’s gigs.
“Watch me get it. I just now
feel like I’ve reached my prime.
Took a little while, but it’s about
damn time,” Thomas raps briefly on
the first track, “Free.”
The song could almost be seen as
a defense of the debut album.
“We wanna be free to be
whoever we want,” the song states
in anthem-like style.
The album clings to a quest for
freedom. “Best Ting” is Bob Marleyesque,
letting Lyons shine with his
familiar Rastafarian sound. And
Thomas and Lyons channel their
Reggae style on “Touchdown.”
Group members work heavier
guitar riffs into the Rock-like “Out of
Me,” and they soar with the soft and
romantic “Escape.” They really funk
things up on “You.”
The album incorporates Swing,
old school Rock, Folk and even Doowop,
featuring keyboard influences
(on “Wanna Be Yours”).
For listeners who enjoy variety and
true vocal and musical skills, it’s well
worth $9.90 on iTunes. For those
looking for a single-genre album,
you’ll have to wait for The Band Be
Easy’s second release.
Or just stop being so damn picky.
jack
The 6-foot-7, 266-pound
John Bukovack is hard to miss
at Anytime Fitness where he
works as a personal trainer. His
imposing size is arresting, but it
is the 38-year-old’s chiseled body
that is a testament to years of hard
work. “I have 11 percent body
fat,” a proud Bukovack adds with
a smile.
The self-described “monstrous
teddy bear” turned his life around
six years ago when he began to
focus on making himself a better
person.
While growing up John was
diagnosed with a neurological
disorder. He calls them “tics,” or
uncontrollable muscular twitches
that are caused by a chemical
imbalance within the central
nervous system, which makes
them fire on different cylinders.
While most people can easily
shrug their shoulders, John’s
shrugs come sporadically, and
whenever his body wants.
“Growing up it was rough. It
was hard for me to find my place.
When I was young I was insecure,
and as I got older I did a lot just
to fit in. I drank a lot, put on a lot
of weight and became sluggish.
I developed a habit with alcohol
and it was slowly ruining my
life.”
He knew he needed to make a
change.
“I just realized that the way
I was living wasn’t for me. So I
changed everything. I looked in
the mirror and remembered who
I was and who I was raised to
be. [I] got in the shower, shaved
my head and started a total
transformation.
“I went outside and I ran and
ran and ran,” Bukovack said.
He then emptied his cupboard
and walked 105 blocks to a gym
to sign up.
“I started studying nutrition;
researched and got the required
qualifications,” he said.
Nowadays, Bukovack is an
open book. He loves to tell about
his triumph over adversity and
how he no longer hides from who
he really is.
“There are certain medications
that I can take to help slow down
the tics. I choose to accept the fact
that I have what I have and I don’t
hide behind it. I believe it makes
me a better person for it. I don’t
care if people look at me silly, or
snicker behind my back. It’s fine.
I see it all the time. To me, I love
it because they’re talking about
me, and I love being the center of
attention,” he says with a hearty
laugh.
After working at several
gyms around the First Coast,
Bukovack joined Anytime Fitness
in Downtown Jacksonville about a
year and a half ago. He finally felt
at home.
“I’m not saying that the other
gyms are bad gyms; they’re good
in their own right. But none of
them compare to the way I feel
here.”
Instead, he says they just
weren’t the right fit for him.
“My fit is more of a family,
more of a welcoming type of
atmosphere. And that is what I
have found at Anytime Fitness,”
he says.
He describes the atmosphere
at Anytime Fitness as a unique
culture.
“We see our members here
as people. Not a figure, not a
number, not a dollar sign. We
want to cater to our members as
people. I don’t even like the term
personal trainer, I like personal
coaches. We help motivate you
and inspire you. We’re by your
side. We are available 24/7;
hence the name. Our trainers are
available anytime,” Bukovack
says, donning his assistant
manager persona for a moment.
MORE THAN A TICKET TO RIDE:
THE RIVERSIDE
AVONDALE
NIGHT TROLLEY
MATT PITTMAN
jack
All aboard!
The Riverside Avondale Night Trolley takes you to some of the most
popular restaurants and bars in the Cultural Core. This clean, convenient,
reliable and low cost form of public transportation is a great alternative to
cars cluttering our neighborhoods.
Besides, picking up a DUI is not a very good way to kick off a
weekend.
Every Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 2am, passengers can jump on
the trolley and for $4 the ride is unlimited. Catching a ride is easy with
the MyJTA mobile app. Download the app, pay your fare, and show the
operator your mobile ticket for your unlimited rides that evening.
There’s also the peace of mind knowing that you won’t have to circle
Five Points for 20 minutes to find a parking place.
Even better, there are several businesses in the Cultural Core that offer
special deals just for riding the trolley.
Show your MyJTA mobile app trolley pass or STAR card at the
following businesses to get your special discounts.
SHERWOOD’S BAR the destination for competitors in San Marco.
There’s even that Photo Hunt game with nude people.
Adding to the good times are plenty of TVs to keep up with
Seriously, Sherwood’s just feels like a place where you’d hear Hank
Williams.
There is no need for a Happy Hour when prices already are low at
Jacksonville’s restaurant culture is an ever-evolving affair.
As older spots plateau and fade, new places come on strong,
meaning there’s never a shortage of exciting places to explore.
Here is one our favorite spots.
« FUJI SUSHI
Did someone say “All you can eat sushi?”
Starting at $15.99, you get all the sushi rolls your stomach can
handle, Kobayashi style at FUJI SUSHI.
Of course there’s the obligatory Spicy Tempura Shrimp Roll and the
Dynamite, but you’ll also find a Jaguar Roll and a Baymeadows Roll.
Or try the Ultimate Lunch Express for $10.99. Along with unlimited
hand-rolled sushi, why not order Soup and Salad, Rice and Noodles, or
something off the sizzling Hibachi Grill?
But don’t go too crazy, folks. You’ll be charged 50 cents for each
item you don’t eat. Then again, 50 cents for a sushi roll isn’t a bad deal.
A jack FAVORITE EATERY
#jackeats
PUT LUNCH AT
OLIO MARKET ON
YOUR GO-TO LIST
ANTHONY NEWKIRK JR.
jack
If you’re anywhere near
Downtown around lunchtime, do
your taste buds a favor and head
on over to Olio Market. The staff
strives to provide their customers
with quick service and great food,
so that your lunch break will be
delightful and stress free.
This popular lunch spot has
been a long time favorite of mine.
It sits pretty much at the top of
my list as one of the best places to
leave the cares of the workplace
behind for an hour or so. Olio has
a great staff led by Greg Desanto,
the executive chef and owner,
and Francesca Spiaggi, who is the
general manager. They provide
every customer who walks through
their doors with great comfort food
and rapid customer service. You’ll
rarely be waiting very long for your
food prepared in an open kitchen.
The menu has an abundance
of items from which to choose.
Whether you want to indulge or
just grab something light, Olio will
easily have you covered.
Especially popular is the
Duck Grilled Cheese. This lovely
sandwich has been featured on
Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich
In America for good reason. The
mix of duck confit, green tomato,
gruyere & white American cheese,
all nestled between thick sourdough
bread, makes for a sandwich full of
amazing flavors.
If you still have room left in
your tummy, ask for Poutine or
Bacon Cheese Fries. You really
can’t go wrong with either choice,
but those cheese fries are just so
damn good.
How about a little lighter fare?
The Orange Chicken Bowl
packs a lot of flavor with sesame
Orange Glazed Chicken, vegetables
and local Congaree & Penn Jupiter
Rice. Choose either because you
can’t go wrong. Also make sure
to check out for their specials and
quiche of the day.
With a menu filled with other
sandwiches, salads & entrees
ranging from $5 to $15, you
certainly won’t leave hungry.
Oh, and if you can’t catch Olio
on your lunch hour, the eatery
is open every first Wednesday
evening during Jacksonville’s
Downtown Art Walk and from 5 to
10 p.m. every Friday.
Great food. Great service. Olio
Market needs to be on your go-to
list.
What are you waiting for?
IS A VERY LUCKY NUMBER
— IF IT’S LOLA’S ‘RITAS
Pablo-Cucumbian
Blue Grass Walkin’
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
“13 Outrageous Margaritas” await thirsty customers at Lola’s Burrito
& Burger Joint.
For just $6.47, there are concoctions loaded with everything from Blue
Grass Kentucky Bourbon, Southern Comfort, tropical-punch vodka and, of
course, the smoothest tequilas in Riverside.
During Happy Hour these great margaritas are at half-price. And if
you’re feeling frisky, you can “Get it Loaded” — that means an extra shot
— for an additional $2.
Let me break down some favorites for you.
Pablo-Cucumbian
Muddled cucumber, fresh lime juice,
tequila, sweet simple syrup, sour and
a dash of Tabasco. Fresh, spicy, salty,
sour, sweet.
Unpredictable like a Colombian drug
lord.
Blue Grass Walkin’
Bourbon, ya’ Blue Grass Kentucky
Bourbon, all the Margarita stuff and the
bourbon, coat that rim with sweet sugar.
Slam this baby.
Key Lime Cuddle
Tequila, lime juice, splash of sour,
coconut juice, Key Lime vodka with a
sugar coated glass. It’s a real dessert.
Lickin’ the glass. Priceless.
So So Co
Lemon lime juice, touch of sour, and
double shot of that Southern Comfort
goodness.
Just far enough south to still speak English.
5 Peso Por Una Bolsa
Tequila, sour, lemon lime juice, a little
Triple Sec, a splash of orange juice
topped with orange vodka, sugar the rim.
Like the roadside guys selling oranges.
Chupa Me Chupa
Tequila, pomegranate vodka, little sour,
sweet guava juice, a salty rim and some
lime.
Time to pucker up big boy!
Jalapeno-Ville
Tequila, lemon lime juice, touch of
sour, a splash of jalapeno vodka, and
garnished with pickled jalapenos. Spicy,
hot, burnin!
Big girls double-fist these.
Otto’s Wobo in Cobo
Some tequila, a little rum, lemon and
lime juice, a splash of guava.
Salt the rim and hold onto your ass.
Lola’s is sure to put a bit ol’
smile on your face. I guess that’s
why they call it Happy Hour.
