the most popular mobile game in the U.S.,
blowing past Clash Royale, Draw Something
and Candy Crush.
But not everyone is thrilled with this
seemingly innocent little app.
CEO James Steyer of Common Sense
Media, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that
promotes safe technology and media for
children, recently wrote to John Hanke, CEO
of Niantic, Inc., the company that unleashed
Pokémon Go upon an unsuspecting public.
Steyer’s letter addressed concerns about
players’ welfare with their GPS directing them
to unsafe locations, such as the homes of sex
offenders and locations with a “large number
of drug addicts.”
Drawn by the vast powers of the game, and
now aware of these safety concerns, I knew
I had to do something to protect the Cultural
Core. I can’t let any of my friends walk into a
crack house trying to catch a Spearow.
So, for you, I’ve taken the liberty of
seeking out some Core locations for rare
Pokémon, PokéStops and Gyms. Along the
way, I found some cool businesses and met
people I otherwise wouldn’t have happened
upon without being under the influence of
Pokémon Go.
I called it “research,” but it’s also a lot of
fun.
Follow these Pro Tips to become the very best
Pokémon Go Trainer in the Cultural Core.
1
Pikachu, I Choose You
You will be offered a choice of Charmander,
Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starter Pokémon.
If you want Pikachu instead, walk away from them
four times and they’ll come back a fifth time with
Pikachu in tow.
2Catch ‘Em All
Even if you’ve already caught a lot of Rattatas
and Pidgeys, keep catching them. Catching
and evolving Pokémon gives you Experience Points
to help you level-up, become a better trainer and
catch higher-level Pokémon.
3
It’s
Evolution, Baby
Speaking of evolution, for faster leveling wait
to evolve Pokémon until you can use a Lucky
Egg. Lucky Eggs give you double the Experience
Points for 30 minutes. You can evolve dozens of
Pokémon in that time (if you have the candy) and
rocket through levels. Lucky Eggs can be purchased,
or earned as a reward for leveling up your Trainer.
Team
Walk-It
To hatch eggs, you’ll need to walk with
Pokémon Go open on your phone and screen
on. However, Pokémon Go uses time and location
- not steps - so instead of walking in circles in your
back yard, try walking in long, straight lines for more
accurate distance tracking and faster hatching.
You’re
No. 1
Most importantly, take care of your Trainer. Yes,
that’s you. Wear good shoes, stay hydrated,
wear a hat (especially in this hot Florida sun), apply
sunscreen. Above all, be courteous to those around
you and to all the places Pokémon Go takes you.
