Brain Injury Association Visits Sunnyhill
Adventures for Second Year
Sunnyhill was proud to welcome friends from the Brain Injury Association of
Missouri back to camp for the second year in a row.
Close to 70 survivors of brain injury attended the week-long camp, 20% of which
were first time attendees.
Although the favorite activity was still zip lining across the lake, Maureen
Cunningham, Executive Director of BIA-MO, noticed that a number of individuals
tried to conquer the Alpine Tower this year. Those that didn't make it
all the way to the top made it a little further than they did last year, she
said.
For survivors of brain injury, attending camp is a step out of
their routine and an opportunity to try new things, spend time
with other individuals who know what they're going through and quite literally, reach new
heights.
"Camp allows survivors of brain injury a fun week of independence," said Cunningham. "It
also gives families and caregivers a week of respite whether it's for a vacation or simply alone
time for parents."
Susan and her husband took on the 24/7 task as caregivers for their son in 2012.
“We have not had any time
alone together since
Michael’s injury,” she
explained. “We are so
grateful that we could have
him go to camp with his
best friend, Marcus, who is
wonderful.”
The week at camp gave the couple
time to do things that they wouldn’t
have been able to do otherwise
such as a getaway to the Ozarks to
visit family and enjoy time on the
lake. Susan even had the chance
to photograph a lot of wildlife
while on the trip.
Sauces at Grand Slam are a Big Hit
Anytime I talk to somebody about Grand Slam Sports Bar in
Fenton, it seems like I always hear the same thing. The first
comment is almost always “They have really good food.”
From the beginning, Grand Slam owner Ed Pupillo has
focused on the quality of the food they serve. Ed knows that to
have a successful sports bar in today’s day and age, you have
to have good food. But this ability to consistently serve great
food that customers rave over didn’t happen overnight.
Ed Pupillo has been in the food business for a long time. He
started working in the family grocery store in the 1960s. He gained vital experience in the produce and meat
departments while working there. In 1979, Ed first gained experience in fine dining when his family opened a
restaurant on the Landing in downtown St. Louis. This was his first experience working with chefs, learning
how to make and prepare seasonings and sauces from scratch.
Then Ed worked for several years with Marriott Corporation, working with fine dining restaurants and food
service at St. Louis Lambert Airport.
In the 1990s, Ed started doing bar-be-que, and in 1995 opened a bar-be-que restaurant in Imperial. This is
where Ed first developed the seasoning that he uses today. This seasoning was originally used as bar-be-que
rub, but over time has evolved to be used on steaks, fish, French fries and vegetables. It was at this time that
Ed developed a lot of the sauces that he uses today.
Then in 2007, the Fenton area was fortunate enough to have the opening of Grand
Slam Sports Bar. Because of Ed’s attention to detail and focus on customer service, the
restaurant has been very successful. Over the years, Ed has kept developing his own
seasoning blends and sauces. Due to customer’s requests to purchase these items the
decision was made to start bottling them for sale.
To show you the success of these sauces and dressings, just ask Ed’s daughter
Patrice. Patrice’s boyfriend Andy has a sister in Chicago that is a chef. She likes these
well enough that she buys them and has them shipped to Chicago.
The most popular item is the Grand Slam Special Seasoning. When I asked what was
in it, he said that if he told me he would have to kill me. It’s hard to get a chef to give
up their recipes. This seasoning is good on steaks and burgers and chicken. It is also
good on potatoes and vegetables. It seems to give a different
taste with different foods. This is available in a 6 ounce bottle.
The salad dressings are all made from scratch. The most
popular is the sweet Italian Vinaigrette, also available in a
light, reduced sugar mix. This is the dressing used on the
world famous Pupillo salad on the menu. They also offer a
Caesar, Honey Mustard and, of course, Ranch. These are all
available in a 16 ounce bottle.
Grand Slam Sports Bar is known for its plump, juicy
wings. But this is in no small part because of their
sauces. All of the wing sauces are also made from
scratch. The wing sauces are offered in Hot, Mild,
Garlic Parmesan and Catalina Gold, which is a mustard
type sauce. These are all offered in a 16 ounce
bottle.
The Grand Slam Bar-Be-Que sauces are a culmination
of 25 years of development. The bar-be-que
sauces are offered in Original flavor, Spicy Hot &
Honey, Tangy Mustard BBQ and Smoked Hickory
Bacon. These all are offered in a 16 ounce bottle.
All of these products are now available for purchase at
Grand Slam Sports Bar. You can call ahead and place your
order, and they will bottle it fresh for you. Take your next
meal to a new level and try one of these sauces or dressings
soon.
Grand Slam Sports Bar is located at 519 Mae Court, at
Second Annual Patriot Day
Defensor Tactical will be hosting their 2nd. Annual Patriot Day on Saturday, June 18th from 11 a.m
to 5 p.m. Patriot Day is a day to celebrate, connect, and come together as a community for disabled veterans.
“There are many veterans groups involved in Patriot Day such as the VFW, AmVets, and the
Disabled American Veterans just to name a few but what it all boils down to is we are all doing the same
mission and that’s why we invited these organizations,” said owner Joel Fields. “We are supporting these
organizations and in the process we are all part of the fight.” On average 22 Veterans commit suicide a
day, over 65,000 homeless veterans walk our streets, and less than 30% of disabled veterans who were
wounded in combat get disability or help. Patriot day will combine service organizations, military, veterans,
and the general public together as a way to bring awareness as well as celebrate and thank our
wounded warriors. There will be activities for all ages, free food, drinks, giveaways, vendors, and displays.
Stop by and show your support for those who gave all! Defensor Tactical is located at 30
Black bear sighted in Franklin Co.,
MDC urges “Don’t feed bears”
This black bear was photographed by a landowner Tuesday morning,
June 7 in Lonedell, Franklin County. MDC urges residents not
to feed bears, and secure any possible food sources like trash cans
and pet food out of their reach.
A black bear has been reported and
photographed the past few days near
Robertsville and Lonedell.
Robertsville, Mo.—The Missouri
Department of Conservation (MDC)
reports that a black bear has been spotted
in Franklin County near the towns of
Robertsville and Lonedell.
According to MDC Wildlife Damage
Biologist Tom Meister, MDC received a
number of phone calls over the past weekend
and Monday from residents in both
towns reporting black bear sightings,
along with some cell phone photos. The
two towns are approximately eight miles
apart with Robertsville along I-44 and
Lonedell on Hwy. 30 to the south.
A photograph submitted by a Lonedell
landowner taken the morning of June 7
shows the bear rooting through a garbage can.
“Bears are a part of the natural history of our state.
They are awesome animals to see and have around,”
Meister said. “We just don’t want them to have interactions
with people.”
Black bears are not typically aggressive and usually
do not pose a threat to humans. However, MDC
urges area residents not to feed bears and recommends
the following actions to help prevent possible
problems:
• Don’t leave pet food sitting outside. Feed pets a
portion they’ll eat at each meal and remove the empty
containers.
• Store garbage, recyclables, and compost inside a
secure building or in a bear-proof container until the
day of trash pick-up.
• Keep grills and smokers clean and store them
inside.
“When people are leaving food out purposely, or
even unintentionally, it draws bears into their property
and they can become habituated to people,” said
Meister. He also said that situation can lead to trouble
and quite possibly the need to euthanize of the bear.
Meister said should a bear become a nuisance, the first course of action would be to use harassment techniques,
such as ……. “Hopefully, that will be enough to get him to be on his way,” he said.
MDC asks residents to report any bear sightings to MDC staff by going online to http://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZZZ.
For more tips on dealing with bears, go to http://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zky.
Fallen Soldiers Honored by Memorial Day
Celebration at Fenton Park
By: Lauren Bishop
Contributing Writer
Veterans, prisoners of war, service
men and women missing in action, and
those currently serving the United
States were all honored at the Memorial
Day ceremony at Fenton Park on May
30.
A Memorial Day celebration has
taken place in Fenton for a little over a
decade, and has occurred in the Heroes
Memorial since it has been dedicated in
2005.
At the Memorial Day celebration, the
Vietnam Veterans of America 1028
posted the colors, the Pledge of
Allegiance was led by Boy Scout Troop
778, and the National Anthem was sung
by Summit alumna Marie Kellerman.
Guest speakers included Tom Ilges, veteran
and director of Focus Marines
Foundation, and Paul Clever, veteran
and director of Maximum Recovery in
Southeast Asia. The event also included
a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action ceremony,
Laying of the Wreaths, three
Volleys and Taps.
Mayor Mike Polizzi was the Master
of the Ceremony and introduced each
speaker and aspect of the event. Polizzi
says that the remembrance ceremonies
of veterans and fallen soldiers shows the
patriotism that this country has and
needs to hold on to.
“[This event is] to love this country, to
love its flag, to love its rules and the
Constitution. To be part of America you
have to love your country. People went
and fought and gave their all and gave
Fenton Mayor Mike Polizzi addresses the crowd to introduce various
speakers and traditions of the Memorial Day ceremony.
ceremony by addressing the table set for one and the meanings of
the adornments.
As one of the speakers at the ceremony, Paul Clever spoke of his father, whom had been lost in a crash in
Laos during the Vietnam War, and how Clever and his wife has searched the jungle and recovered and repatriated
his remains. Clever says Fenton goes above and beyond in honor of servicemen and women in the community.
“This area is a nucleus of pro-military people. The rest of the country isn’t generally like this. People really
care here and it’s another step in the culture that is this area. This [event] is perpetuating the good thing that’s
already here,” Clever said.

Memorial Day Mass
St. Patrick’s “Old Rock Church”
Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and Sam Baudo
On Memorial Day May 30, Archbishop, Robert J.
Carlson of St. Louis Archdiocese celebrated mass at
St. Patrick’s “Old Rock Church”. He greeted everyone
on this blessed memorial weekend as a way to
remember and keep alive memories of family and
friends, while our service members receive eternal
life, through their sacrifice by standing in harms way.
Msgr. George Hildner, Assembly Knights of
Columbus Honor Guard presented the colors in dramatic
fashion with their colorful dress uniforms.
Organist and Music Director, Connie Flinn opened
the program with the patriotic song America following
with Now Thank We All Our God and We Are
the Light of the World. The service ended with
America the Beautiful. God Shed His Grace On
Thee, And Crown Thy Good With Brother Hood From Sea
To Shining Sea.
St. Patrick’s in Catawissa, known as the “Old Rock
Church” was built in 1853.The first few feet of stone were
placed by “dry mortar” without the aid of adhesive material.
After the Civil War the second stage was completed with traditional
“wet mortar”. All of the stones consisted of Missouri
limestone or sandstone quarried by hand near the church. On
April 1, 1885 all of the woodwork was damaged by fire leaving
only the rock walls standing. Through perseverance and
with Gods help the farmers survived failure of their wheat
crops, rebuilt the
church and reopened
Easter Sunday, 1886,
with everything paid
for. The first Church in
1844 was a log structure
for the pioneers in the
Meramec Valley area.
Our 10th Annual
Parade to the Park!
A big “THANK YOU” to all who participated in the 10 th Annual Parade to the
Park on Saturday, May 28th! The House Springs American Legion Post #783
posted the Colors, Richard Wiedemann (Veteran of the Korean War) sang the
National Anthem, Cub Pack #553 of House Springs led us in the Pledge of
Allegiance, and the NWAA Middle School & Elementary School Cheer Squads
could be heard all along the parade route!
Veterans of the Vietnam Era were in attendance and honored, and we were proud
to have two WWII. Veterans in attendance – Mel Bloom and Cletus Harness.
The Vietnam Era was a terrible time for our Veterans. Here are two of those
Veterans, in their own words, sharing thoughts that seem to capture the unique and
painful experience of the Vietnam Era:
Navy Machinist Doug Woolford, “The soldiers serving “in country” with boots
on the ground, had it much worse than I did.”
Air Force Technical Sergeant & Corporal Medic, Hank Blamy, “I’m not a
hero. I’m a survivor. I took care of heroes. It was a privilege.”
Chapel Hill would love to hear your suggestions for events that could celebrate
and remember Veterans in our community. Call Kayla at (636) 274-4100.
Wines of Summer Comes to Old Town Eureka
There has been an incredible turnaround of Old Town
Eureka in the last few years. Old Town Eureka has been transformed
from a quiet downtown to a place where people gather
for great dining and entertainment. Two of the old town businesses
have been a key to this turn around.
Michelle’s has brought people to Old Town
Eureka by offering a great dining experience.
The Eureka Wine House offers the community a
place to gather and socialize while enjoying
some great wine and beer. Now these two businesses
are ready to take it to a new level.
On Saturday, June 18th at 4 p.m., Michelle’s American Bistro and Eureka
Wine House present the Wines of Summer 2016. This will be a music, art,
food and wine festival. The event will premiere some great artists. Vesna
Delveska will be creating a painting that evening. There will be some great
food choices geared towards the summer. The Eureka Wine House has done
their research and will present some wines picked from Bommarito Wines, Glazers, Terra Firma and Trade Mark Wines.
The highlight of the evening, however, will be the music of world-renowned guitarist Farshid Etniko Soltanshahi.
Michelle’s owner Curt Newsome first met Farshid when he performed at Curt’s former wine bar in the Central West
End.
Farshid Etniko is known for creating “world music”, by bringing together influences from four different continents.
Born in Iran and educated in Paris before coming to St. Louis, that worldly background has provided a variety of experiences
and influences to inspire his music.
His music has been called Latin Jazz with a Persian touch. It is original, intriguing and entertaining. Normally playing
at venues like Sheldon Concert Hall, to bring this quality of musician to Eureka is quite a treat.
Mark your calendar for the Wines of Summer 2016 Festival, brought to you by Michelle’s American Bistro and
Eureka Wine House. The event will be held at the Wine House at 107 South Central in Old Town Eureka on Saturday,
June 18th at 4 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. You can purchase tickets at either business. If you
are an artist wanting information on a booth, please contact Curt Newsome at 314-574-5400 or Lynn Lavelle at 636-
Jefferson College PACE Series Concludes with
Summer Musical “Company”
June 17-19 and June 24-25
As the final event in the Jefferson College 2015-16 PACE (Performing Arts and Cultural Enrichment) series, a
14-member cast of students, community members and staff is rehearsing for the summer musical production of
“Company” directed by Communication and Theatre Professor Dr. Rebecca Ellison.
According to legendary award-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, “Company” is a show that focuses
on “The challenge of maintaining relationships in an increasingly depersonalized society.” It is a show without a
plot, but with a central theme. It is considered by many to be the most wise and insightful examination of marriage
and relationships that has ever been portrayed on stage. Infused with humor and arguably the best collection of songs
ever written for the theatre, “Company” opened in 1970 and changed the face of musical theatre forever.
On the night of his 35th birthday, the central character, Robert, struggles to think of a wish to make as he blows
out his birthday candles. As a bachelor, surrounded by his married friends, he is uncertain whether he should simply
be happy with his life or whether he should wish for his own romantic partner. Over a series of dinner parties, first
dates, and conversations, Robert attempts to understand the pros and cons of marriage from his diverse and frequently
hilarious friends and begins to make sense of his persistent bachelorhood.
Cast members include Dalton Mathis of Cedar Hill as “Robert,” Breanna Meyer of St. Louis as “Sarah,” Chris
Owens of Arnold as “Harry,” Emilie Heitmann of Festus as “Susan,” Brandon Menke of High Ridge as “Peter,”
Whitney Wolcott of Barnhart as “Jenny,” Ben Cotter of Pevely as “David,” Jill Holtzmann of Arnold as “Amy,”
John Wehner of High Ridge as “Paul,” Teresa Schwartz of St. Louis as “JoAnne,” Kirk Jackson of Crystal City as
“Larry,” Jenna Null of Cedar Hill as “Marta,” Ashley Clayton of High Ridge as “Kathy,” and Ellen Robben of St.
Charles as “April.” Jefferson College adjunct music instructors Keith Boyer and Mark Trautwein are leading the
production respectively as choral director and music director.
Performances are scheduled for Friday-Saturday, June 17-18, at 8 p.m., Sunday, June 19, at 2 p.m., and Friday-
Saturday, June 24-25, at 8 p.m., in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Hillsboro campus. The show contains adult language
and situations.
Individual event tickets to the Sunday matinee are $2 for everyone. On Fridays and Saturdays, ticket prices are
$5 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.
Advance tickets may be purchased by calling Dr. Rebecca Ellison at (636) 481-3367 or by emailing rellison@jeffco.edu
with date of performance, type and amount of ticket(s) to reserve. Reserved tickets need to be picked up at
least 15 minutes prior to show time or they will be sold to other patrons. Tickets will also be sold at the door depending
on availability.
Pacific Celebrates Jensen Point
Pacific River Walk Trail, Ozark Trail Association and
Great Rivers Greenway team up for an information
booth.
And they said it couldn’t be done. On Sunday, May 30th at 2 p.m. the City of Pacific held a Grand Re-Opening and Dedication of
Jensen Point. This was almost exactly 77 years from the original grand opening, held on Monday, May 30th, 1939.
To refresh your memory, here is a brief history of Jensen Point:
Jensen Point was a project of the Henry Shaw Gardenway Association in 1939. It was constructed by Co. 1770 Civilian Conservation
Corps under the supervision of the National Parks Service. It is named after Lars Peter Jensen, the first president of the Gardenway
Association. This landmark has been an important part of Pacific’s Route 66 heritage.
In 1991, Wayne Winchester purchased the property next to his office at 1043 E. Osage. He didn’t want Jensen Point, but the seller told
him he was getting it whether he wanted it or not. He quickly fell in love with it. Over the years he developed a passion for Jensen Point.
Previous to his ownership, Jensen Point had been abused and neglected. Without Wayne’s perseverance, Jensen Point would have surely
disappeared. It is safe to say Wayne Winchester saved Jensen Point.
In 2015, after months of asking by Pacific Alderman Steve Myers, Wayne agreed to sell Jensen Point
to the City of Pacific. Through Steve’s tireless efforts and the help
of Great Rivers Greenway, Pacific received a grant from St. Louis
County Municipal Parks Grant Commission for the purchase and
restoration of Jensen Point. Now a Pacific city park, this landmark
will now be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
The ceremony started with the presentation of colors by Boy
Scout Troop 329. Then came a moving rendition of our National
Anthem by Jerry Holloway, soon to open a bar-b-que restaurant
in Pacific. Then came an opening prayer by Pastor Joe Sullivan of
the New Beginnings Lutheran Church. He gave us biblical exam-
Steve Flannery did the
introductions.
Jerry Holloway performs the
National Anthem.
Boy Scout Troop 329 served hot dogs and
Jensen Point
Pastor Joe Sullivan
offers a prayer.
Pacific Alderman Steve
Myers challenges the
crowd.
Missouri State Rep.
Kirk Matthews
reminded us what the
day was about.
Wayne Winchester,
former owner of
Jensen Point.
After the walk up, many needed a break.
ples of how communities come together for the
good of all.
The introductions of
speakers was offered by
Pacific Park Board President
Steve Flannery.
Missouri State
Jim Brasfield of St.
Louis Co. Municipal
Park Grand Comm.
Representative Kirk
Matthews reminded us what
Memorial Day is all about.
Pacific Alderman Steve
Myers gave a challenge to
everyone not to just give
your opinion of what should
happen at Jensen Point, but
to get involved.
Then Jim Brasfield of the
St. Louis County Municipal
Park Grant Commission
told how the grant came
about and what they do, and the importance of parks.
Former Jensen Point owner for 25 years, Wayne
Winchester, gave a speech on what it means to him.
He also told a couple humorous stories about Jensen
Point. He was contacted by a man wanting to do a
photo shoot at Jensen Point for a Route 66 calendar.
He didn’t see a problem with it until he was told the
women would be nude! He also had a lady tell him her
first child was conceived on Jensen Point. Wayne has
a passion for Jensen Point, and you could tell he is
very excited about this landmark being preserved for
future generations.
After the ceremony, everyone gathered at the top of
Jensen Point for photos and the ribbon cutting. The
gazebo was beautiful with the flowers
donated by Harry Engelhart of Engelhart
Farm.
Congratulations to the City of
Pacific on their new park. Thank
you to everyone that gave money,
materials, hundreds of hours of
volunteer labor and support to
make the acquisition and restoration
of Jensen Point possible.
Destination America And Usa Today Announce Grand Prize Winner
Of The Fourth Annual “Red, White And You” Contest
– Eureka, Mo., Wins National Competition to Receive Memorable Fourth of July Celebration –
(Silver Spring, Md.) – USA TODAY and Destination America today announce the winner of the fourth annual RED, WHITE AND YOU contest, which awards a deserving community a
spectacular Fourth of July celebration. And the winner is… Eureka, Mo., a town outside St. Louis still recovering from historic flooding that submerged the downtown business district on December
29, 2015. Residents banded together to help their neighbors and local small businesses bounce back, and over Fourth of July weekend will celebrate the resilient community that still stands “Eureka
Strong!” The nationwide contest, which launched in February, gathered submissions from Americans across the country nominating their hometowns and telling us why they deserve an over-thetop
patriotic party.
“Reading Eureka’s moving contest submission was truly a eureka moment for us when we learned how residents came to each other’s aid like one big family to rebuild their beloved town,” said
Jane Latman, general manager of Destination America. “RED, WHITE AND YOU is all about timeless American tradition, celebrating the qualities that make each hometown unique, and creating
life-long memories with family and neighbors – all things that Eureka embraces now more than ever, making it truly deserving of the grand prize celebration.”
“We’ve been inspired by the commitment of this community to persevere and honored to celebrate Eureka Strong!”
said Susan Motiff, VP, General Manager of USA TODAY.
Mayor Kevin Coffey shared, “Recent challenges have brought to the forefront the strength and character of our wonderful
community and families. Eureka truly represents the pride and principles of the American Spirit. We are honored
to be chosen as this year’s winner.”
The RED, WHITE AND YOU contest received a record-breaking 6,400 entries from Americans nationwide sharing
moving stories of why their towns deserve an all-American celebration. The grand prize-winning entry comes from
Tony Colona, who nominated his town of Eureka, Mo., in the wake of historic flooding that swept the city as a result
of heavy rainfall four days after Christmas 2015. With thousands of residents and small businesses displaced, plans
for the town’s New Year’s Eve celebration were put on hold so that the community could immediately begin the arduous
process of cleaning, rebuilding, and getting business owners back on their feet. As Eureka’s website put it, “They
took a chance on their dream and opened a pub, an art studio, a clothing boutique in our
town… and we recommitted our support to them. This was a defining moment for Eureka
and we will come back even better and stronger.”
Below is the actual submission for the grand prize winning town:
Nominated by Tony Colona
In December, 2015, our small suburban town of Eureka, Missouri suffered historic flooding.
Most of our downtown area, along with some subdivisions had close to 6 feet or more of
standing water. Our town rallied together to weather the storm, with many pitching in to
sandbag or move people in danger, but much of our historic downtown area is still closed
for repairs. A Fourth of July celebration, along with some media attention showing Eureka
residents' resolve and optimism would do much to lift the spirits of many who have had a
very difficult start to 2016. Our motto is "Eureka Strong", and you can see these signs on
many of the businesses downtown that still are closed. Thank you for your consideration.
Past RED, WHITE AND YOU contests delivered Fourth of July celebrations to:
• Waveland, Miss., the community considered ground zero of Hurricane Katrina celebrated
10 years of recovery efforts with the town’s first July 4 fireworks in a decade
• Oroville, Calif., a Gold Rush town recently impacted by drought and economic challenges
that restored its tradition of fireworks at the nearby Oroville Dam, the leading
water source for the entire state of California
• Prescott, Ariz., a town recovering from the devastating wildfires that tragically claimed
the lives of 19 brave firefighters
• Hamtramck, Mich., a city that has been hit by hard times but, in true American spirit, is
working to make a comeback
• Union Beach, N.J., a coastal town recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy
• Fayetteville, N.C., a community that enthusiastically supports its military partners at Fort
Bragg.
TIPS
By: Chuck Maher
Realty Executives Premiere
Not Just For 1st Time Home Buyer’s
United States Department Of Agriculture (USDA) offer loans for home purchases. Financing the purchase
of a home is as hard as it has ever been. Banks continue to tighten their lending standards and increase
down payment requirements. However the United States Department of Agriculture is still lending money to
buyers in rural areas.
A guaranteed USDA home loan is designed for home buyers
“ Not Just First Time Buyers” who lack the down payment and credit standards to qualify for a traditional
conventional mortgage. This type of financing allows the buyer to receive a 100% of the appraised value of
the home, allowing the buyer to include the cost of the home, along with all applicable closing costs and any
inspection fees. A buyer can truly buy the home for no money out of their pocket.
Qualification for this loan is much more relaxed than what you see in other mortgage products. The home
must be in the designated USDA area.
In Jefferson County this means if you are traveling West on Highway 44 the property needs to be West of
Highway OO. If you are on Highway 30 the property needs to be West of Gravois Rd, and out Highway 21
the home needs to Southwest of Four Ridge Rd.
For the buyer their maximum household income for a family of four cannot exceed $78,550 and $103,700
for a family of five or more people. The credit score requirements are significantly lower than other types of
financing.
Missouri ranked 6 th in the Nation on the number of guaranteed loans, and 7 th in the Nation in amount of
dollars loaned in the Fiscal year of 2010. For more information go to USDA Loans.com or contact Nick
Maddock at Cornerstone Mortgage at 314-303-4622
Give Your Children the
Gift of (Financial) Knowledge
Submitted by Matt Thomason, Edward Jones Financial Advisor
It’s almost Father’s Day. If you’re a dad with young children, you can expect some nice homemade
cards and maybe even a baseball cap. But, of course, your greatest reward is spending time
with your kids and watching them grow. In return, you can give them a gift – the gift of knowledge.
Specifically, in the months and years ahead, teach them the financial skills that can help make their
lives easier and more rewarding. For starters, encourage your children to become savers. You can
do this in a couple of different ways. First, set a good example. You might explain to your kids that
you want to buy a certain item, but you are waiting for it to go on sale. Or, if it’s a particularly bigticket
item, like an ultra high-definition television, tell your children that you simply can’t afford
it now, but that you are putting away some money each week until you can. You might even make a chart showing
your progress. Another way to help your children become better savers is to provide them with a monetary incentive.
To illustrate: For every dollar they put into a “piggy bank” or an actual savings account, tell them you’ll put in, say,
50 cents. They are likely to be pleased and excited by how much faster their money grows with your contribution, and
they may well become more motivated to save. Furthermore, you’ll be giving them a valuable lesson for later on in
life, when they work for a business that offers to match their contributions to a 401(k) or other retirement plan.
Unfortunately, many young people, upon taking on their first “career” jobs, either under-contribute to their retirement
plans or ignore them completely – thereby making it more likely that, later on in their working lives, they will have
to come up with much bigger sums each year to accumulate enough resources for a comfortable retirement. Learning
to save is certainly important – but children should also learn about investing. To help get your children interested in
becoming investors, point out that they can actually own shares of companies with which they are already familiar –
the companies that make the games they play, the movies they watch and the food they eat. In fact, you could even
simulate the investment process by letting them choose a stock and then follow it. To make the results more tangible,
use “play” money to represent an initial investment, and add or subtract to the pile to track the ups and downs of the
real stock. You might even explain some of the reasons for the stock’s movements; for example, if you and your child
are following the stock of an entertainment company, and that company produces a blockbuster movie that leads to
sequels, spinoffs and merchandise tie-ins, you can point out how these developments have pushed up the company’s
stock price. You might also explain that while these short-term price movements are interesting – and maybe even fun
– to follow, investing is actually a long-term endeavor, and the best investors often hold stocks for many years before
selling them. By following these suggestions, you can help your children acquire good financial habits – and seeing
them put these skills to good use can provide you with many happy Father’s Days in the future.
offer a facilitator, Dianne Lowerre, whose
role is that of a helper, offering suggestions
and encouragement.
Friendship: Grieving individuals
establish a bond with others who have
experienced the same kind of loss. A
lively fellowship of kindred spirits will be
formed. Consider this experience from a
man whose 17-year old son died in an
accident. “After our son died, several of
our friends found it uncomfortable to be
with us. Somehow, our son’s death
altered our friendships. In our support
group, we were able to make new friends
who understood us and our loss. They
weren’t afraid to be with us.”
Community: Grief is a lonely, isolating
experience. Most folks feel distanced
from the real world and set apart from
others by labels such as “widow and widower.”
In a group, people feel connected
to others, accepted and understood.
Leadership: As people participate in a
group, they may recognize a need to provide
help, support and advice to others.
Assisting new members gives them confidence,
strength and purpose.
If you have questions about our groups,
grief materials or need to talk to someone,
call (636) 274-4100. We invite you
to come to our groups. Just come as you
are. Come and share, or just sit and listen
if you prefer. When do you stop coming?
Whenever you want.
