STAFF APPRECIATION 

EXCELLENT NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SURVEY REPORT

he Board of Directors and 

the Administration hosted 

the Annual Year End Staff 

Party, at the Rex Manor. The party 

was a true expression of appreciation 

to the staff who gives of themselves 

to our beloved residents all year 

round. 

The evening’s extravaganza 

included a sumptuous buffet dinner 

consisting of a large selection of 

entrees to please everyone’s palate 

and a night filled with upbeat dancing 

for everyone’s dancing pleasure. 

There were numerous cash raffle 

prizes with the grand prize being 

$500. You could even have your picture 

taken in the “Sephardic Home 

Sled” as a remembrance of the fun 

filled evening. 

Earlier in the day, residents, staff, 

guests and volunteers were on hand 

for the presentation of the prestigious 

Sadock and Pinhas Awards at the 

home. 

In 1975, the Morris and Esther 

Sadock Memorial Fund Awards were 

created. They were established as an 

added incentive to the members of 

the Nursing Staff to maintain the 

Home’s high standards of quality 

care for our residents.

The Pinhas Family Memorial 

Fund Awards were originated in 1976 

by Mr. & Mrs. Irving Pinhas and Mr. 

& Mrs. Max Pinhas, in honor of their 

late parents Anna and Albert and 

their late brother Monroe. These 

awards were established to give 

recognition to worthy employee 

recipients. 

We are proud to report that this 

year’s recipients of the Sadock

THE HASC CENTER

he Sephardic Home is happy 

to announce they we have volunteers 

from the HASC 

Center, Chayeinu program come to 

the Home on a daily basis. HASC is a 

not-for-profit agency that serves people 

with developmental disabilities. 

These high functioning special 

needs women are happy to be volunteering 

at the home in a work-like set- 

RESIDENTS RING IN 2012 

As the Residents started gathering 

for the gala event you 

could feel the excitement 

mounting. It was the talk of the Home 

days before the big event. The 

Residents were dressed in their finest 

attire looking their very best. 

Shlomo Haviv provided the lively 

multi ethnic music that brought our 

Residents, staff and volunteers to the 

dance floor. Exotic dancer Mia 

intrigued the onlookers with her style 

Resident Anita Meyers Feraco with the girls from the HASC Center 

ting. They assist in transporting our 

residents to and from activities and 

assist at meal times. They also are 

instilling Jewish traditions to our 

Russian Speaking Program, L’Chaim. 

The Sephardic Home is pleased to 

be associated with these women who 

help our residents with eagerness and 

a smile everyday. n

Getting Older Not Old

his month I visited my dear 

father at a nursing home. He 

is frail and nearing his 

ninetieth birthday. Presently he is 

weak but very determined to become 

stronger than ever. He was widowed 

and had been living at home for the 

past few years with 24 hour care. At 

this time he is not able to live at his 

home as more care is needed. So, by 

choice, he is a resident at the Sephardic 

Nursing and Rehabilitation Center 

located in Brooklyn, New York. His 

message seems to be that "I am getting 

older, not old. And to prove the point 

he runs his life as always. He stays in 

control. He made the choice and it was 

a wise choice indeed. 

My father is the President of the 

Rabbinical Alliance of America. For 

over sixty five years he has lead the 

Jewish community and rabbinical 

organizations. He still sees hundreds 

of people that come for advice or 

socialization. His room at the nursing 

center is his new office and temporary 

home. 

This month he participated in a 

special program for the Rabbinical 

Alliance of America. The organization 

has over eight hundred Rabbis and 

many came together meeting for inspiration, 

Torah and rabbinical direction. 

If you can't make it to the program 

then bring the program to you! The 

way he pictures his predicament of living 

away from home is that it will prolong 

his life and not, G-d forbid, as 

some think, otherwise. If you want to 

live then take the courage and enter a 

home where they can help you. 

Let me explain with a four-hundred 

year old story attributed to Rabbi 

Zechariah Alshari. A man dreamed 

that he saw an angel standing over 

him with a sword. "Who are you, my 

lord?" he asked in alarm. 

"I am the Angel of Death, and I 

have come for your soul." 

"Have pity on me, I have my little 

sons and daughters. Wait until they 

grow up and then come back." 

The Angel of Death pitied the poor 

man, returned his sword to its sheath, 

and said, "l'll let you off. But the next 

time I come for you, no excuses will 

help." The man thanked him and 

requested that he send a messenger 

before coming again, so that he could 

prepare himself and not have to live in 

constant fear. The Angel of Death 

agreed. 

When the man awoke, he realized 

it was only a dream. Little by little, his 

dream about death was forgotten. In 

the course of time, he married off his 

sons and daughters, grandchildren, 

and even some great grandchildren. 

At last he grew old and fell fatally ill. 

Now the Angel of Death arrived and 

was ready to take him. 

"How could you have come like 

this without a warning? Didn't you 

promise to send me a messenger first?" 

"0 man," said the Angel of Death, 

"I sent you not one messenger, but 

many." 

"Where were they?" asked the 

man. "I didn't see or hear a single one 

of them." 

The Angel of Death said, "Why, 

they're right here, all of them. The first 

was your eyes, which used to be sharp 

and grew dim. Then were your teeth, 

which once could grind stones and 

then fell out of your mouth. Then there 

was your stature, for now you are bent 

like a bow while once you were 

straight as a palm tree. 

The next was your legs on which 

you hobble and last was your appetite 

- how flat everything tastes to you 

now! Those are the messengers I sent 

you. So come along and no excuses." 

My father had a problem with his 

teeth - so he got new ones. He has a 

problem with his eyes - so he got a 

cataract operation and a new pair of 

glasses. Now he has a problem with is 

appetite so he changed to a better tasting 

diet. He can't walk well - that's 

why they make wheel chairs! He 

100 RABBIS ATTEND 

5771 SIYUM HASHAS 

On September 19, 2011, the 

Sephardic Home hosted 

more than 100 local 

Congregational Rabbis who attended 

the 5771 Siyum HaShas Convocation of 

the Rabbinical Alliance of America – 

Igud Horabbonim. This celebration of 

Torah study was dedicated to the memory 

of Rabbi Saul Eisner the Igud’s 

Executive Vice President. Rabbi 

Eisner’s wife was present. 

Rabbi Gershen Tannenbaum, the 

Igud Director welcomed the esteemed 

audience, in particular Rabbi Abraham 

Hecht, President of the Igud for over 40 

years. Rabbi Tannenbaum praised 

Rabbi Hecht’s honorable Rabbinical 

career as a “Kiddish Hashem.” Rabbi 

Hecht delivered a heartfelt Presidential 

address in the presence of his family. 

The evening was highlighted by 

numerous “divrei torah” by well 

known Rabbonim. Chairman of the 

event was Rabbi Yaakov Spivak, Rav 

and Rosh Kollel of Aishyl Avraham in 

Monsey who is a well known radio 

personality. Other speakers included:

Rav of Mount Sinai Congregation, Ivy 

Hill, NJ; Rabbi Hanania Elbaz, Rav of

The Siyum HaShas Dinner was 

dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Meir 

Shapiro zt”l (1910-1998), late Chief 

Rabbi of Buenos Aries and Chairman 

of the Igud Horabbonim, who 

launched the yearly Siyum HaShas by 

members of a national Rabbinic organization. 

Regrettably Rabbi Shapiro did 

not live to share in the joy of the Igud’s 

first Siyum HaShas. Rabbi Shapiro 

passed away on Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, 

1998, the very year of the Siyum’s 

establishment. The Siyum HaShas and 

Dinner dedication is made possible by 

the generous donation of the Shapiro 

family, led by Rebbetzin Pearl Shapiro 

and her son, Pinchas Shapiro.

homes. How they can help nurture 

and preserve life in a quality fashion. 

Most of all it is up to the families to 

show a strong interest, support, by 

preserving the love and bond between 

those entering nursing homes.

feelings of abandonment are experienced

home away from home providing better 

care, love and nourishment which 

cannot be given in a home setting. You 

can provide a great mitzvah in sharing 

this message with families facing the 

decisions of placing loved ones into 

dignified nursing or retirement 

homes. Meanwhile we pray for the 

health of my father, Rav Avraham Dov 

ben Sara. n

CHANUKAH 2011 

C 

hanukah is often referred to 

as the Festival of Lights, or 

the Time of Miracles and is 

considered one of the most joyous 

times in the Jewish calendar. 

Everyday of the week we had a 

celebration. We had a wonderful visit 

from the students of Yeshiva Flatbush 

who put smiles on our resident’s faces. 

The seventh and eight grade students 

from Barkai Yeshiva visited our residents 

and presented the home with a 

hand made wooden menorah that was 

placed in the auditorium for everyone 

to admire. Everyone enjoyed live 

entertainment, latkes and jelly donuts 

during Chanukah. 

Throughout the eight days of 

Chanukah Rabbi Amar went to all the 

floors to light the menorahs enabling 

all of our residents to partake in the 

joyous holiday. On the last day of 

Chanukah Rabbi Amar had a special 

Bar Mitzvah program for our L’Chaim 

Adult Day Care Participants. Thirteen 

men received certificates, put on teffilen 

received gifts, enjoyed a delicious 

lunch and cake in their honor. 

Many thanks to Rabbi Amar and 

the entire staff for making this years 

Chanukah celebration the huge success 

it was. n

WALK TO END 

ALZHEIMER’S 

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive 

and fatal disease 

growing at an epidemic 

rate. As many as 5.4 million 

Americans are living with 

Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s 

destroys brain cells, causing memory 

loss and problems with thinking and 

behavior. It gets worse overtime and 

it is fatal. Today it is the sixth leading 

cause of death in the United States. 

Recently the Alzheimer’s 

Association sponsored a “Walk to 

End Alzheimer’s” in Coney Island 

and the Sephardic Home was proud 

of their staff and family members 

who participated. The “team” walked 

proudly carrying a banner bearing 

the Home’s logo. Prior to the walk the 

Home sponsored a cake sale raising 

money for this most needed cause. 

The Sephardic Nursing and 

Rehabilitation Center recognizes the 

unique needs of persons with 

Alzheimer’s disease by offering specialized 

programs. Our purpose is to 

assist in areas of impairment while 

encouraging remaining abilities, 

always treating the individual with 

dignity and respect. 

Specially trained and selected 

staff accepts an increased responsibility 

to be sensitive to the resident’s 

needs and to respond with compassionate, 

life-enriching programs. 

Plan on joining the team next 

year, the proceeds from the walk are 

used to underwrite Alzheimer’s 

research, education and support services.

OUR ANNUAL ART SHOW

very Wednesday, you can find our artists creating fine art in the 

auditorium. Some of our residents try their hand in creating their 

own masterpieces; others choose to follow an outline. 

Art therapy helps our residents pursue an interest enabling them to 

continue the life long patterns of growth and learning. All of our recreational 

activities help our residents take advantage of their excess leisure 

time. 

This year at our annual art show the auditorium was converted into an 

art gallery with all of the masterpieces displayed for residents, visitors and 

staff to view and purchase. Each artist received a certificate of recognition 

for their artistic achievement in painting. 

Many thanks to our Recreational Staff under the direction of Judith 

Weiss for providing this wonderful program for our Residents. n

Residents and staff were on hand 

to assist in the competition. Whether 

it was cheering on their teammates or 

keeping score everyone participated 

in this exciting event.

very third Wednesday you could walk into the auditorium and 

think you were at the Culinary Institute, or watching the Food 

Network. 

Under the direction of our Food Service Director, Carmen Stelmark, our 

Residents prepare different foods from every corner of the culinary world. 

Carmen goes over cooking techniques adding a flavor of fun. n

osh Hashanah services 

were held in our beautiful 

synagogue with record 

attendance, over 150 Residents and 

family members. After the Shofar 

was sounded in the synagogue, 

Rabbi Amar went around sounding 

the Shofar for Residents who were 

unable to attend the service. 

Residents visited our waterfall 

in the garden for Tashlich service, 

throwing breadcrumbs and pebbles 

in the water as a symbol of casting 

away their sins. 

Days before Yom Kippur the 

Medical and Nursing Departments 

reviewed Residents charts to determine 

who was able to fast. Yizkor 

prayers were said for all deceased 

family members individually.

A delicious break fast dinner was 

prepared by our Food Service 

Department that was enjoyed by 

our Residents, their family members 

and guests. 

A beautiful Sukkah was built in 

the garden, adorned with bright 

colored streamers, and pictures 

depicting Jewish life. During the 

days of the holiday Residents were 

brought to the Sukkah for kiddish 

and to enjoy their meals. 

The High Holidays were culminated 

with a joyous Simchat Torah 

celebration, with music and dancing.

The Sephardic Home is nationally known and rec- 

ognized as one of the finest nursing and rehabilitation centers 

in the country. We have been asked by the New York State 

Department of Health to share our knowledge and programs 

with other long term health care facilities. The Sephardic Home 

consistently provides superlative care to our residents from 

both the Sephardic and Ashkenasi communities. 

The Sephardic Home was established in 1948, under non- 

profit auspices, to provide the highest caliber of care for the 

elderly. The Board of Directors and the staff are committed to 

meeting the challenges of today's ever-increasing demands to 

care for people who are living longer. We provide skilled med- 

ical, nursing and rehabilitation services in a pleasant atmos- 

phere where the total personal needs of each resident is our 

main concern. All contributions are deductible to the full extent 

of the law. 



Dear Michael, 

I'm writing this letter to commend Ms. Yenold Goddard, C.N.A for the care and 

treatment she provides for my husband, Max Packman. Ms. Goddard is currently the 

assigned caretaker for my husband for the 7 AM - 3 PM shift. Ms. Goddard shows true 

compassion for my husband as well as other residents I have seen her care for in the 

Sephardic Home. 

As difficult as it is having a loved one reside outside of the home and in a care facility, 

I feel tremendous peace of mind on the days when I know Ms. Goddard is assigned 

to care for my husband. I know my husband will be treated with dignity, gentleness and 

sensitivity throughout his time in her care. 

My husband and the Sephardic Home are very fortunate to have Ms. Goddard as an 

employee and care provider. I can only hope that you will continue to hire and retain 

exceptional individuals such as Ms. Goddard.

I think about the Sephardic Home very often. Mother and Allan were so well cared 

for. I often think that if I ever need a nursing, I’d want to come back to Brooklyn to the 

Home.

I recently was a patient at the Sephardic Home and am writing to express my 

thanks to all of the staff of your facility for the care I received there. 

I had a severely broken ankle and was on the eighth floor for rehabilitation. All 

of the staff were wonderful. In the beginning I was somewhat helpless. The aides 

were very kind in helping me and very pleasant about it, also the nurses who bandaged 

a sore on my leg. 

My physical therapist, Glenn was excellent, very knowledgeable in knowing'when 

to push me in exercising and helping me to begin walking and walking 

steps which I needed to do to get up to my home. I owe a great deal of my recovery 

to him and also to my occupational therapist, Pharah, for helping me gain the 

upper body strength I would need to use the walker. Both therapists stayed with me 

for my entire time there which was very important. 

The room was always clean, and linen changed daily. Your garden was a great 

pleasure.
