the financial implications of that is truly a job all on its own. Those who support our club, individual
teams or grassroots football in general we would like to thank you for doing just that. We hope that
you will continue to follow us and spread the word to your friends and colleagues to encourage them
About Wodson Park FC
In June 2012 the two Wodson Park Football clubs (Senior and Youth) amalgamated to create today’s
club. The joining together of these two much respected clubs means that we can now provide a clear
player pathway within our club.
We aim to provide local children both boys and girls with the opportunity to take part in football that
is fun, progressive and run in a controlled safe environment. Our senior players also follow a player
pathway which means that we able to progress players through the senior system into a very high
standard of football.
We have great facilities at our two sites, Wodson Park Sports and Leisure Centre and Crouchfields.
Our senior section was founded in 1997 by John Murphy, with sides playing out of Wodson Park Sports
and Leisure Centre in Ware. The teams progressed through leagues and divisions and in 2009 the club
agreed a deal for the 1st team to ground share with their neighbours Ware FC on promotion to the
first division of the Spartan South Midland Football League.
For the start of the 2012-2013 season the club undertook wholesale changes with the management
and players of the first and reserve sides. In came Simon Riddle, David Stingemore and Deane Niner to
look after the first team and Neil Kimsey and Tony Robinson for the reserves. With a new very much
hands on chairman Lee Cook the new look senior section of the club now has direction and an air of
calmness that has already filtered down to our new crop of young and talented players.
For the 2013-2014 season we moved back to our roots at Wodson Park Sports and Leisure Centre following
the decision by Ware FC to terminate our ground share agreement to follow other interests! An
enormous amount of work was done to ensure that we continue to play in the SSMFL and at step 6.
The management and trustees of Wodson Park continued to be of great help and support along with
the SSMFL who gave us valuable advice and direction at a difficult time for the club for which we were
most grateful.
Our 2014-2015 season started very sluggishly and in August 2014 Simon Riddle stood down as first
team manager by mutual consent. Kristian Munt returned to the club for his second stint as first team
manager. In his first term Kristian took Wodson Park from the Herts Senior County League into Division
two of the SSMFL and then won promotion to the first division. Kris was instrumental in the merging of
the two Wodson clubs before moving on to our neighbours Ware FC.
The 2014-15 season was one of rebuilding and reshaping in readiness for the 2015-16 term. There was
a lot of tinkering with player positions and availability didn’t always allow us to field our best sides. We
set ourselves a mid-table finish and managed to achieve this by the end of the season. At the same
time, it was disappointing that we had to withdraw our reserve team with just a month to go to the
end of the season. This was a decision that we thought long and hard about before realising it was
what was needed to move forward.
it was what was needed to move forward.
Our 2015-6 season was one in which our hard work begun to show. The training regime head coach
Rob Lloyd introduces paid dividends and we were pleased to finish in 6 th position which was within
our aims for the season. It was pleasing to see young players coming through and breaking into the
first team. During the close season we finally saw the completion of our spectator stand and our
official G Ground Grade.
For the current season we are ready with a squad containing 26 players from last term along with all
our coaching personnel too. We have set targets and now it’s time to achieve them.
Below our senior teams is a thriving youth section that is very much community based with a reputation
for putting players first. We have a development squad for 5 and 6 year olds and then teams
from U8 through to U17 playing in the Mid Herts Rural Minors League. We are working towards integrating
the older youth teams in to the senior setup to give us a natural player pathway to senior
football. Moving away from football the club also has a thriving netball section with over 100 players
playing in local leagues.
Good luck to you all in the season ahead and have a safe journey home.
Playing fortunes have fluctuated since the war and season 1950-51 saw the Blues finish as runnersup
to Bletchley Town in the S.M.L. Premier Division. The following season the 1st XI lifted the championship
crown and the second string were crowned S.M.L. Division Two champions with the Youth
team winning three trophies. The 1952-53 season began North Beds Charity Cup final win over Biggleswade
Town (the match was held over from the previous season), and ended with a second successive
championship win, Arlesey amassing S.M.L. record 52 points.
In February 1954, the developing Arlesey Town Colts, local players, reached the 4th round of the F.A.
Youth Cup and were drawn away to Portsmouth. The 1950's had seen the Blues compete in the
Season 1968-69 saw one of Arlesey's favourite sons in charge of team affairs; Roland Legate, (who
played football professionally for Luton Town) took the helm as player-manager and during his fouryear
spell, he took the Blues to a league runners-up spot. The start of the 1975-76 season saw Legate
return as manager and the trophies came with him, 3 Hinchingbrooke Cup successes, one Beds Senior
Cup, the Biggleswade K.O Cup twice and the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy once. Supporting
the Executive Committee's wish to cross the pyramid to the United Counties League. With
two indifferent terms in the U.C.L., Arlesey lifted the Premier Division crown in season 1984-85.
During the late 1980’s the Blues won the United Counties League, Premier Division Cup and a Beds
Premier Cup final appearance against Luton Town. During the 1991 centenary year in the blues lifted
the South Midlands Floodlight Cup with a fine victory over fellow U.C.L. side Irthlingborough Diamonds,
who went on to become Rushden & Diamonds in the football league.
With the rising cost of UCL travel and the attraction of more 'local derbies' in 1991-92 it was decided
to resign from the United Counties League and cross to the familiar surroundings of the South Midlands
League. A successful first year campaign saw the Blues finish in third place and in their second
season finished sixth in the league and lifted the Premier Division Cup. The club also gained national
recognition following a marvellous run in the FA Vase to the quarterfinals, with victories Flackwell
Heath 2-0, Ware 1-0, Haverhill Rovers 2-1, Eastwood Hanley 2-1, Falmouth Town 5-3, and Oadby
Town 2-1. In the quarterfinal the blues faced old U.C.L. foes Boston in a thrilling game and lost out to
an injury time winner.
With changes to support and playing staff for 1994/5 the results exceeded expectations. The South
Midlands League championship was won with a record 107 points, but even this memorable feat was
eclipsed when Arlesey Town defeated Oxford City at Wembley Stadium in front of over 13,000 spectators
to lift the F.A. Carlsberg Challenge Vase on May 13, 1995.
About Arlesey Town FC
SSMFL Division 1 Clubs Badges
Arlesey Town Reserves have only been reformed in their present incarnation since 2010 although the
main clubs long and illustrious history dates all the way back to 1891.
Although records for the reserves over the years are a little sketchy the present set up was put together
with the demise of Arlesey Athletic FC to give a second tier of football in Arlesey.
The team competed in the Beds Premier League as they were formed and gained promotion to the
Spartan South Midlands League in 2013 following the path of the 1st team many years ago, moving
straight into Div 1.
Although this is seen as a consolidation year the club are very keen for the team to compete at this
level which is always difficult for a clubs reserve team to compete on an even level with other clubs 1st
teams.
Last season saw the restructure of the side with a new management team of Kieran Dempsey and
Duncan Field and it fulfilled its promise of producing players with 5 players progressing to the 1st team
in the Southern League.
This season has seen a fresh influx of players and the signs look good that this can continue and also
this conveyer belt of talent can also produce results in the South midlands League as well. A change in
management at the end of last season saw James Tizard take over the helm and he has looked to revamp
and strengthen the side for this season.
Arlesey Town Football Club celebrated their centenary in 1991, having been formed by a group of local
people before the turn of the last century. Before the Second World War, Soccer was played on a localised
basis, and in common with many clubs in the area, Arlesey competed in the flourishing Biggleswade
& District League and entered the Biggleswade Knock-out Cup.
During the 1920's, the club joined the Bedfordshire County League - which was later to become the
South Midlands League. Arlesey originally played at 'The Bury' before moving to their former home,
'Lamb Meadow.' The ground took its name from 'The Lamb,' a former Public House situated near the
site which, for many years acted as the club's headquarters and changing rooms. The birth of the modern
era is owed to the foresight of officials of the late 1940's and early 1950's. They purchased the
premises and became landlords for the princely sum of just £500 in 1948. Four years later, in 1952, an
adjoining area was bought and this is where the clubhouse used to stand. The story goes that two
Committee members missed their train to Kings Cross and with time to kill, saw a notice in a local Estate
Agent's window for a forthcoming auction of the land. They returned the following week and purchased
the said land for the clubhouse. The area lay unused for a number of years until the arrival of
'Biggs Wall' who negotiated with the club to build temporary offices and canteen facilities - which the
Football Club then bought back, turning them into what was then, the clubhouse.
