SECTIONING TECHNICAL INFORMATION 

Specimen preparation for microstructural examination involves a series of operations, the ease and success of each depends on the 

preceding step. The first cut impacts all subsequent steps and the impact can be quite detrimental if too much damage is induced during 

sectioning. In some cases, very large parts are initially cut with torch or plasma cutters, or band saws and then resectioned with abrasive 

or precision equipment. The proper equipment selection and technique will minimize the deformation. A key component in the sectioning 

technique is firm and stable vising of the part. If the vise is loose or clamped improperly, the cut may be stalled, the abrasive wheel 

damaged, or the part itself may undergo deformation.

SmartCut automatically lowers the cutter’s 

feed rate when the cutting motor reaches its 

maximum load to minimize sample damage. 

SmartPulse activates the pulse action of the 

cutting arm. The arm will move downward for 

a short amount of time and then stop for the 

same amount of time in a cycle. This pause in 

cutting allows more coolant into the cutting area 

to minimize sample damage.

SECTIONING 

Wheel Path 

Chop Cutting 

The traditional form of machine operation. 

Wheel contact arc is governed by sample 

size. Generally a struggle with large/difficult 

parts. 

Sample 

Chop Cutting with Pulsing 

Wheel contact still governed by sample size. 

The pulsing action pauses the feed rate in 

short intervals enabling coolant to wash 

away swarf and dissipate heat. 

Y-Feed Cut 

The abrasive wheel is stationary and the cutting 

table moves forward completing a one 

time cut into the sample. Wheel contact arc 

is governed by sample size. 

Planer Cut 

The abrasive wheel lowers into the sample 

at an incremental rate before the cutting 

table moves in the forward motion. Wheel 

contact arc is determined by cut depth. 

Saw Cut 

The wheel contact arc can be precisely 

controlled via depth increment. The traverse 

stroke must always exceed the part length 

to avoid a change in wheel contact arc area. 

Machine needs to be set for each part. 

Orbital 

Similar in action to Saw Cut but on a curved 

path. Simpler and quicker in operation. 

Part size is irrelevant as the orbital action 

produces a minimum contact arc area during 

cutting. 

Did You Know? 

MACC (Minimal Area of Contact Cutting) offers advantages in comparison to the 

traditional chop cut. Orbital, Saw, and Planer cut types minimize the contact area 

between the abrasive wheel and sample allowing you to obtain a quality surface on 

large and difficult samples. Cooling efficiency is also increased resulting in a sample 

with little to no deformation.

ABRASIVE CUTTERS 

The most commonly used sectioning device in the microstructural analysis laboratory is the abrasive cutter. Selecting the correct wheel 

for a specific application, including abrasive type, size, bond strength and overall wheel thickness is essential to achieving a good cut. 

In addition, abrasive sectioning should be performed wet, with an ample flow of coolant that includes both corrosion protection and 

lubrication. Proper technique will minimize surface damage and provide adequate cutting rates. There are many different abrasive cutters, 

accessories and consumables available. When selecting an abrasive cutter, consider the sample size, volume of sectioning required and 

the variety of parts.

As water in the coolant tank evaporates, the 

remaining water becomes harder, reducing the 

effectiveness of the coolant. This graph shows 

that the hardness of the water will double in 

only ten days. This can be eliminated by using 

distilled or other chemically pure water. 

In this illustration, the elements of the coolant 

(represented by A-L) combine with the minerals 

in hard water (represented by V-Z), resulting in 

reduced coolant effiecency and a sticky residue. 

When mixed with chemically pure water, the 

coolant formula remains intact and performs as 

designed.

PRECISION CUTTERS 

When sectioning small, delicate, or extremely hard materials, precision cutters are a must. These cutters primarily use thin, metal bonded 

diamond wafering blades which allow for more precise cuts, less material (kerf) loss and less induced deformation. Very thin abrasive 

wheels can also be used on larger models. Blade selection is based on the material type. The goal is to find a blade that will create the 

best surface finish while providing a suitable cut time for the operator. In order to have optimum cut times and minimal deformation, it is 

essential to use ample coolant. This will provide adequate coolant to keep the sample and blade cool, remove any debris from the cutting 

area and enable the abrasive to provide the best cutting action.

Castable mounting systems require neither pressure nor external heat and are recommended for mounting specimens that are sensitive

Support clips are for use in supporting specimens during mounting. The weight and hardness of the clips should be considered when 

choosing a clip. The stainless steel SamplKlip is the heaviest clip, but may be too hard for use when preparing a soft material. The 

UniClip is the next heaviest clip and is softer, making it more compatible with soft materials. For metallic specimens that are to be 

etched after preparation, one of the polymer clips (SamplKlip I, Specimen Support Clip, or UniClip) is best to prevent interference with 

etching due to a stainless steel clip in contact with the specimen.

GRINDING & POLISHING

GRINDER-POLISHERS 

The grinding and polishing steps in a metallographic preparation method can be accomplished in many ways and combinations. Most 

steps are performed on a table-top unit that can be used for both grinding and polishing. There are also systems that are strictly for 

grinding. 

The goal of any method is to prepare a final polished specimen free of deformation and suitable for analysis. The initial abrasive size 

should be as small as possible, yet be able to create a flat surface and remove any sectioning deformation. Each subsequent step should 

induce as little deformation as possible while removing any damage from the previous step. Using adequate lubrication, most commonly 

water, throughout the process will aid in minimizing deformation.

GRINDING CONSUMABLES 

When selecting a grinding surface there are several factors to consider: amount of material to remove, durability of the grinding surface 

and the material type. 

SiC paper provides rapid material removal for most metal and alloys with minimal sample deformation. However the majority of the 

material removal occurs within the first minute. For optimum material removal on harder materials, such as sintered carbides and 

ceramics, sintered metal bonded and resin bonded diamond discs should be used. An additional advantage of diamond discs is their 

longevity. 

Diamond lapping films have been designed for various material applications including microelectronic devices, wafers ceramics, and 

optical fibers. Fixed abrasives such as UltraPrep Diamond Films offer excellent finishing capabilities, less abrasive embedding and more 

uniform material removal.

Apex Quick Change Magnetic System 

A magnetic-based system used in conjunction with either abrasive surfaces or polishing cloths. Apex consists of four components, 

requiring two components to form a system. The first component, Apex M, is long-life magnetic disc with a pressure sensitive adhesive 

(PSA) backing on one side and can be used on any conventional platen. Select from Apex B or the magnetic backed Apex S to complete 

your system. Apex B bimetallic plate can be used between Apex M and any PSA backed abrasive, polishing cloth or other consumable 

of choice. Apex S magnetic backed carrier film can be used between Apex M and any consumable with the compatible high friction 

backing, like CarbiMet S. 

The MagnoSystem is an alternative offering, also comprised of two components. Apex MagnoDisc or MagnoFix is a direct subsitute 

for Apex M, while the MagnoMet or MagnoPad are similar but single layers plates like Apex B.

Using Apex CGD or DGD, you can significantly reduce your grinding times while acheiving excellent flatness and edge retention. 

These versatile, long wear discs are suitable for most material applications and reduce change over time. Using just water, they 

produce far less mess during preparation, especially when used to replace a more traditional diamond and polishing cloth step. 

While not required for continued performance, they can be periodically dressed to refresh grinding rates, particularly when used on

Tips, Tricks & Techniques 

• When laying a cloth on a bimetallic plate or platen, start at an edge or use a roller to 

prevent air bubbles from being trapped under a cloth. 

• A dry cloth will scratch specimens and can cause tearing. Wet a new cloth with an abrasive 

suspension, extender or water. 

• Use each cloth with abrasive of a single particle size only. Doing otherwise will cause 

undesirable scratches on specimen. 

• Rinse cloth briefly under water after each polishing cycle to maintain their integrity.

DIAMOND POLISHING SUSPENSIONS & PASTES 

Diamond is routinely used for the preparation of metals, ceramics and minerals due to the high removal rates. The cutting rate is 

even further enhanced when selecting polycrystalline diamond rather than monocrystalline. The increased number of facets on the 

polycrystalline structure enables efficient cutting and minimal deformation. 

When working with water sensitive or soft materials that have a tendency to embed abrasive particles, paste is your best choice.

• Diamond paste products are best suited to materials prone to diamond embedding. 

• Pastes are typically applied to a clean cloth by rotating the platen at approximately 50rpm and by 

placing the syringe tip about 2in [5cm] out from the center of the platen. Start dispensing the paste 

onto the cloth, resulting in a spiral pattern, if the bead is raised, too much product has been dispensed.

FINAL POLISHING SUSPENSIONS 

Final polish solutions remove the final layer of surface deformation often invisible to the naked eye. Yet the removal of this deformation 

is essential when evaluating with high magnifications, polarized light, differential interference contrast as well as using EBSD techniques. 

A variety of application specific suspensions are available to provide superior performance. 

MasterMet , chemo-mechanical colloidal silica (SiO 2 

), is especially suited for ferrous and nonferrous materials, titanium, semiconductors 

and hard materials such as ceramics. 

Water sensitive materials can be handled with MasterPolish which contains little water. The solution provides high material removal 

rate due to a combination of the high pH and blending of alumina and colloidal silica abrasives. 

Alumina solutions are best for soft materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, precious metals and electronics. In addition, MasterPrep 

is well suited for automated dispensing.

MICROSCOPY 

Microscopy, analysis of features or microstructures, and other analytical testing is usually performed on specimens once they have been 

sectioned, mounted, and prepared with suitable grinding and polishing steps to reveal the features of interest. In general, the type of

Rockwell ® Hardness Testers 

The Rockwell test is based on the difference in indentation depth between a smaller preliminary force (minor) and larger total force 

(major). Rockwell hardness values are expressed as a combination of a hardness number and a scale symbol representing the indenter

VICKERS/KNOOP HARDNESS TESTERS 

Knoop and Vickers tests are performed by pressing an indenter of a specific geometry into the test surface at a known test force for a 

specified time. After removing this force, the size of the resulting impression left in the material is measured optically. The size of the 

indent is used to calculate hardness. The Vickers indenter is a square based pyramid, and is best for comparability of hardness across a 

wide range of materials and loads. The Knoop indenter is an elongated rhomboid and is usually used when very shallow or closely spaced 

indents are required. This form of test machine is often split into two categories: Macro- and Micro-Hardness. 

Macro Hardness testing (using loads greater than 1kg) produces larger indents and is suited to testing general materials properties. This 

is usually only done with Vickers type indenters. 

Micro Hardness testing uses loads less than 1kg and is used to test small areas, when multiple indents need to be made close to each 

other (e.g. to assess changing hardness), for testing close to edges or interfaces, or for thin samples. Both Vickers and Knoop indenters 

can be used in this test range.

BRINELL HARDNESS TESTERS 

The Brinell test consists of applying a constant load or force, usually between 62.5 and 3000Kgf, for a specified time (from 10 - 30 

seconds) using a 2.5, 5 or 10mm diameter tungsten carbide ball. The load time period is required to ensure that plastic flow of the test 

material has ceased. Lower forces and smaller diameter balls are sometimes used in specific applications. After removal of the load, the 

diameter of the recovered impression is measured using a low power microscope or automatic measuring device. 

The actual Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) is calculated by factoring the indent size and the test force however it is not necessary to make 

the actual calculation for each test. The BH3000 tester can calculate Brinell hardness directly by simply typing in the indent size measured 

using the external measuring microscope. Alternatively, we also offer an automatic PC based measurement system.

will not perform beyond this time period, nor does it mean that the product will be usable continuously for this time frame. The shelf life 

is independent of the warranty* period as defined below. The shelf life depends on proper storage - i.e. Abrasive Cut-Off Wheels must 

be stored lying flat and in a dry location. Stored standing up or in a humid area breaks down the wheel composition.

2017 Buehler Microstructure Calendar 

Call for Entries 

The Buehler Microstructure Calendar is a recognized forum for excellence in this unique area of technical expertise. Publication in the 

calendar is open to anyone who has achieved a level of excellence in materials preparation. If you would like to submit an entry for 

the 2017 edition, please do so according to the following guidelines. 

GUIDELINES 

SUBJECT OF PHOTO MICROGRAPH: 

• Microstructural details or hardness indents of any metallic, non-metallic, geological or bio-related materials 

• Image must be obtained through the use of a light optical microscope (no SEM or TEM) 

• Image must not be digitally pseudo colored or enhanced 

REQUIRED INFORMATION: 

• Completed entry form 

• Brief title statement that details the material depicted in the image 

• The original magnification used to acquire the image 

• The illumination mode used, such as brightfield, darkfield, polarized light, reflected or transmitted, differential interference 

contrast (DIC), phase contrast, or any other relevant information concerning the illumination and observation methods 

• Details of any etchants used to reveal the microstructure, including the chemical formulation where applicable 

IMAGE REQUIREMENTS (Images not meeting the requirements will not be accepted) 

• The entry must be uniformly illuminated and have sharp, crisp, in-focus details. 

• The image cannot have a scale-bar . 

• Digital files MUST be TIF, JPG or BMP and 120dpi (printed size will be 13in x 9in) 

• 8in x 10in [200 x 250mm] up to 11in x 14in [275 x 350mm] color photo prints will also be accepted.
